In March 2022, the St. Peter's Peacocks became just the third team in NCAA tournament history to defeat a 2-seed when they upset Kentucky. After then defeating Murray State to advance to the Sweet 16, the notoriety grew exponentially. Suddenly, news reports talked about the amazing story of St. Peters and all the benefits of them winning on a national stage. This episode asks the question of how all this exposure can be quantified. Will more students enroll? Do they get more money to fund other school programs? Is student morale something that can be measured? Scott Rosner, Academic Director of Sports Management and Professor at Columbia University, joins the show to discuss the empirical data and all the factors that can impact St. Peters both positively and negatively. The final podcast of the month (and the quarter of 2022) sets up a huge sports week with lots of intriguing storylines abound as Episode #244 delivers on all that's happening and then some. On deck: (5:27) The Final Four is set! You couldn't have predicted a better Semifinal Saturday as Duke will go up against hated rival in North Carolina. While Kansas will try to slay some demons as they have another date with Villanova with a national championship on the line. I'll cover how these teams got here, sprinkle in some disappointment with Gonzaga, Arizona and the Cinderella St. Peter's Peacocks in Jersey City and look ahead to both matchups, the big takes from each game and the history of each school as it'll culminate in a national title. (33:10) There were two big transactions that transpired in the NFL last week with Matt Ryan going to Indianapolis. Does he have anything left? Then the Kansas City Chiefs send Tyreek Hill in a package for a plethora of draft picks to Miami. Are the Chiefs not as invincible with this move? What does this mean for Dolphins QB Tua Tagovailoa? Will he able to produce with the pieces now put in place for him to succeed? And with the loss of another wide receiver in Green Bay, how does this affect Aaron Rodgers as the Pack try to make another run at a Super Bowl? (41:40) Break up the Boston Celtics. They've been on a tremendous run since January. Are they a threat to come out of the East? Kyrie Irving can finally play in home games as the vaccine mandate has been lifted in New York City. Will he be able to build enough continuity to close out the regular season on a high note? What about Ben Simmons? Is he close to returning in the lineup? As for the Lakers, they're holding onto dear life to make the postseason. And the Suns continue to rise high and shine bright as they look to get back to the Finals. (53:13) The NHL still has a bit more than a month to go to conclude their schedule. I'll provide an update throughout the league, including the Wild Card chase in each conference as we'll see if there'll be any drama as we approach the homestretch on this marathon of a season. I'll also share my thoughts and experience on the new UBS Arena, home of the NY Islanders, as I had a chance to take in a game there recently. (59:54) Baseball will be in our consciousness soon enough as the new year begins in ten days. The big question of the moment in the sport. Are the Yankees going to offer a lucrative contract to pending free agent outfielder, Aaron Judge, before Opening Day? (1:02:32) With the Masters a week and a half away, Phil Mickelson has bowed out of the tournament for the first time in almost 30 years. Will this do him some good? (1:04:22) And in closing, a different installment of my Hero and Zero of the Week! On today's episode, the guys recap day 2 of the Sweet 16 which featured another absolute stunner from the St. Peter's Peacocks. How did Shaheen Holloway's squad take down the heavily favored Boilermakers? And it was another disappointing end for Matt Painter's Purdue team. Is it time to be concerned if you're a Boilermakers fan? In the battle of the Blue Bloods, UNC took down UCLA continuing the Tar Heels late season run. Is it destiny that we get a Duke-UNC Final Four matchup? How does Marty feel about that? And a year after making the Final Four, Mick Cronin's Bruins exit in the Sweet 16. Was this season a failure out in Hollywood? In the Midwest Region, the only remaining 1-seed. Kansas, took care of business against Ed Cooley's Friars. And they'll take on Miami on Sunday after the Hurricanes beat Iowa State. The ACC has 3 teams in the Elite Eight, more than any other conference. Did we underrate the conference all year? The Sweet 16 round of the Men's NCAA Tournament is here and the experts on the Locked On Podcast Network preview the biggest stories happening throughout March Madness. They discuss the possibility of the Michigan Wolverines, St. Peter's Peacocks, Miami Hurricanes, and the Iowa State Cyclones continuing their Cinderella run into the Elite 8. Duke Blue Devils will be under the microscope due to it being Coach K's last run. Will the Arkansas Razorbacks suffer the same fate as the rest of their SEC counterparts? We discuss it all on this Sweet 16 Preview.
On today's Sweet 16 preview, the guys break down each of Thursday and Friday's 8 games. Off the top, Marty and Rico address the weekend's drama involg Ohio's Tate. Then we move onto Thursday's first game - Gonzaga and Arkansas. Do the Razorbacks have a shot against the top team in the nation? And is Gonzaga still the favorite to win it all? Then we go down the region to the Duke-Texas Tech matchup. Will Coach K's final dance come to an end in the Sweet 16? Will elite defense win out over great offense? Then we move to the South Region where Arizona-Houston and Michigan-Villanova fight for spots in the Elite 8. Can the Wolverines March run continue against a red-hot Wildcats team? And after escaping disaster against TCU, can Arizona bounce back and take down an under-the-radar Cougars squad? We then welcome on the Big Dog, Providence head coach Ed Cooley. Coach Cooley's Friars are heading to the Sweet 16 in a matchup against 1-seed Kansas. Coach talks about the vibe in his locker room heading into the Sweet 16 and what it will take to beat a top ranked Jayhawks team. Plus - Coach Cooley talks about how he's preparing his team for the biggest stage of their basketball lives. Next we move onto the Cinderella story of the tournament, the St. Peter's Peacocks, who take on the Purdue Boilermakers. Does Shaheen Holloway's Peacocks have enough magic to take down another giant? Are the Boilermakers too big and too talented to lose? The winner of that will take on a blue-blood, either UNC or UCLA. Can the Tar Heels late-season run continue? How hurt is Jaime Jaquez and can that derail the Bruins? And finally we head to the Midwest region where 1-seeded Kansas takes on the Big Dog's Providence Friars. Can the magical season for Providence continue to the Elite 8? Are we most confident in the Jayhawks to make the Final Four? Either the Jayhawks or Friars will play a double-digit seed in the Elite 8. 10-seeded Miami takes on 11-seed Iowa State to round out the round of 16. We end things touching on the coaching carousel including Kevin Willard's move to Maryland and Sean Miller's return to Xavier. Make sure you subscribe, rate, and review Barstool Bench Mob. Eight games down on Saturday and eight more to go on Sunday and host T.J. Rives with guests are back to go over it all for the 2022 NCAA Tourney on the nation's college basketball show "College Basketball Coast to Coast" First, T.J. and Jason Powers of the "Powers on Sports" podcast go over the thrilling final game of Saturday as top overall seed Gonzaaga, the favorite to win the title, was pushed to the limit by T.J.'s alma matter, the Memphis Tigers late Saturday night. Gonzaga rallied from a 10 point half time deficit behind future NBA stars Drew Timme and Andrew Nemhard to secure the win and move into the Sweet 16. Jason has thoughts on the game and the Zags now battling Arkansas next. Plus, the new darlings in 2022 are the St. Peter's Peacocks out of New Jersey, who became just the second #15 seed to win a second round game Saturday night. This as they upset #7 seed Murray State to move on to the round of 16. How have they done it? We discuss. Jason also goes over a couple of Sunday games in the preview mode, including Purdue and their chances to move on to the Sweet 16, along with Arizona and Illinois. Plus, the guys talk Duke-Michigan State and Coach K against Izzo one more time on Sunday. Next T.J. welcomes Tyler Jones live of Chatsports.com and the "Jones Report" show/podcast. Tyler was in the Dickies Arena in Ft. Worth, TX, as North Carolina shocked #1 seed Baylor in OT. Plus, later in the afternoon top seed Kansas withstood a tough Creighton team to move on to the Sweet 16 to play Providence next. Tyler gives insight on all of it from being courtside.
