“We are here to connect people to nature and beautiful places in an effort to help build an army of guests and followers that want to preserve them. And so doing it right from the beginning was very important to me. Focusing on how to create guest room structures that have little to no impact on the land. Focusing on how to actually design physical and experiential aspects that connect the guests to nature.” We're in great company with Peter Mack, Founder and CEO of Collective Retreats, the first and largest B-Corp certified experiential travel company redefining traditional hotels through a collection of unique luxury retreats in unexpected places.  From Vail, Colorado to Governors Island, New York to Hill Country, Texas, travelers can find inspiration in every direction across Collective Retreats, experiencing considered exploration, fostering a deeper connection with the land, community and themselves.  And with a new vision from Collective Retreats, The Conservatory Collective is a new cultivation of people and places, a curated portfolio of nature stays and experiences around the world where extraordinary accommodations are paired with exclusive benefits and perks.  In this episode, as Collective Retreats celebrates 10 years of offering luxury outdoor hospitality, a decade of creating unforgettable experiences in breathtaking locations, Peter speaks to the excitement and exploration yet to come.  Top Takeaways [2:00] Peter Mack has worn many hats throughout his hospitality childhood turned career, with dishwashing being his favorite.  [3:10] “The hotel industry has evolved a lot, especially in the last several generations to be more about providing comforts that remove guests from the place and in ways, disconnect them.” Peter explains what went awry that caused him to create Collective Retreats.  [5:15] Peter learned early on how to turn potential problems into joyous moments because  “there's no such thing as a complaint when you've established trust.” [9:50] Making a difference has been ingrained in Collective Retreats since the beginning -  from little-to-no-impact architecture to sustainable amenities, from immersive nature experiences to communal local cuisine. [12:09] Collective Retreats as a name is like an onion. It has a lot of layers that can be peeled back to explain the entirety of the experience.  [14:25] Experience Collective Retreats by land, water or fireside - start the morning making coffee with a view, enjoy a boat ride around the harbor in New York City, wake for fly fishing at sunrise in Vail, sit around a campfire sipping bubbly in Hill Country.  [25:20] Dine In Good Company with the Hearth & Harvest Open Fire Dinner Series where the local culinary talent knows a trick or two about how to bring out the flavor of the local ingredients.  [31:00] “Travel For The Collective Good” starts with transparency, and Collective Retreats is proud to share their impact with the world.  [36:15] Soon, travelers will be welcomed to retreat to Sonoma, California or Trojena, Saudi Arabia with more signature stays in serene settings to come.  Notable Mentions Chef Ali Loukzada Chef Noberto Piattoni Hamburger America by Chef George Motz New School American Cheese by Chef Eric Greenspan Members of The Conservatory Collective: El Cosmico in Marfa, Texas Tumbling River Ranch in Grant, Colorado Pacuare Lodge in Costa Rica White Desert in Antarctica Visit For Yourself Collective Retreats Website @collectiveretreats The Conservatory Collective Website @theconservatorycollective Stay In Good Company Website

An Amazing Odyssey: A Congressman's Solo Flight Around the World - Paul Glenshaw The Not Old Better Show, Smithsonian Associates Series Welcome to The Not Old Better Show.  I'm Paul Vogelzang.  As part of our Smithsonian Associates Art of Living Series, our guest today, Paul Glenshaw has an unlikely story. Paul Glenshaw will be presenting at the Smithsonian Associates, June 15, 2021, and the title of his presentation is An Amazing Odyssey: A Congressman's Solo Flight Around the World You can find out more in our show notes. But Paul Glenshaw is our guest today and see if you can imagine this: a congressman risks his life for a self-funded world peace mission. The Smithsonian loans an airplane from its collection for a solo round-the-world flight. A pilot makes that flight and does nothing to exploit his achievement. Yet, as Glenshaw tells us, all these things happened, in 1951, to one Peter Mack. In 1951, Peter F. Mack Jr., a 34-year-old U.S. congressman from rural Illinois, made an extraordinary journey for peace. He borrowed a single-engine airplane from the Smithsonian, rechristened it the Friendship Flame, and flew it around the world alone on a self-funded, self-directed goodwill mission. Along the way, without aides or security, he met ordinary citizens and dignitaries and extended his hand in friendship, and became the first person to fly across the Pacific Ocean alone. As his constituent's five and ten-dollar donations came in, Congressman Mack contributed $1500 of his own money, planned his route, and re-christened the plane Friendship Flame. On October 7, 1951, he took off from Springfield, Illinois on what he called the Abraham Lincoln Goodwill Tour. After crossing the Atlantic, Congressman Mack toured Western Europe, Scandinavia, and the British Isles. He tried in vain to enter the Soviet Union. He flew through the Middle East, Iran, Pakistan, into South Asia, then Vietnam and Korea (where the war was in full swing), and finally Japan.  He handed out what he called “friendship scrolls.” He met with dignitaries and ordinary citizens, assuring everyone he met that the people of the United States were interested only in peace. Aviation historian Paul Glenshaw offers a fascinating snapshot of a troubled globe in the aftermath of World War II and the start of the Cold War as he uses original images, film, news reports, and audio recordings made during Mack's epic odyssey to tell this inspiring story. My thanks to Paul Glenshaw.  Paul Glenshaw will be presenting at the Smithsonian Associates, June 15, 2021, and the title of his presentation is An Amazing Odyssey: A Congressman's Solo Flight Around the World You can find out more in our show notes.   My thanks as well to the Smithsonian Associates team for all they do to support the show.  Of course, my thanks to you, my wonderful Not Old Better Show audience.  Please be well, stay healthy and vaccinated, and remember, let's Talk About Better.  The Not Old Better Show.  Thanks, everybody.   For more information, please click HERE> https://smithsonianassociates.org/ticketing/tickets/amazing-odyssey-congressmans-solo-flight-around-world

A sample from Peter Mack’s book, AYANA CHERRY & THE TABERNACLE GLORIOUS Includes Rev. Mathias Lovejoy's sermon, "Satan's Whisper" An Excerpt: Ayana Cherry's education in the power of seduction will be put to the test when she is taken in by Rev. Mathias Lovejoy and given a place to live and work at The Tabernacle Glorious. Her stride of seduction is on full display as she navigates the inner sanctum of a church that is rife with blackmail, sex, secrets and lies, all pitted against a reverend who has plans to build a grand cathedral to rival the biggest in the nation. When Rev. Mathias Lovejoy calls on Ayana's help, she has a perfect opportunity to get her friend, Peaches, released from jail in the process. After seducing the reverend, satisfying a judge's request to be sexually dominated, and exposing a thieving, adulterous, blackmailing deacon, Ayana Cherry is a half-a-million dollars richer and on her way to California to find love. Peter Mack is the highly acclaimed author of A Neighborly Affair. His follow- up novel, The Seduction of Ayana Cherry, was also met with high praise. Peter Mack was born in Los Angeles, California.
