How do we make life easier for teachers? By streamlining. What is streamlining in education? Streamlining is ensuring that decision making and processes are optimal, that there is no time wasting, that all decisions are evidenced in their efficiency. It can be done with a democratised decision-making, problem-defining and an overhaul effort to focus on learning first.

For this week's Keoni Chats, I reconnect with my former high school classmate Natalie Isaacson. I met Natalie during our junior year as she was fresh off a move from Washington down to Oregon. Prior to coming to Oregon, she made a promise to herself that she would pursue singing and when I first met her, she was excelling in the choir group living up to that promise. Natalie was always easy to talk with and made connecting easier. We talked about the transition she experienced moving from Washington to Oregon then the transition she experienced afterwards that led her to Arizona. Natalie is in Arizona pursuing a career in Teaching and adapting to being in the learning environment with students younger than her. Follow Natalie here: https://bit.ly/3hYQJKx
In 2009, after almost 40 years of being a sport at Kutztown University, the AD met with head coach Tim Flannery to bluntly tell him the men's program was being cut, effective immediately. The "reason" was based on "[the] current economic situation" and as the result of an outside "funding study" on the intercollegiate athletic program, the then-director of athletics and the then-VP of Student Services and Campus Life recommended to the university president discontinuing the sports of men's swimming and men's soccer because cutting those sports presented "the right combination of financial savings, Title IX proportionality, and impact on the overall athletic program." No one should overlook the mention of "Title IX proportionality". It's ALL about Title IX, and "finances" and other cited reasons are just convenient and useful camouflage. A change in school administration that saw the exit of all three university positions mentioned above in 2020, 2011, and 2014, respectively, saw the arrival of a new president (Dr. Kenneth Hawkinson) that fully supported athletics and an AD (Renee Hellert) that did her own number and data-crunching to examine the impact of dropping/restoring men's swimming. To that we say, HOORAY! Listen to Coach Flannery as he shares the inside story! The essence of an entrepreneur is to recognize a problem, realize you're the best person to solve it, then get to work solving it. With the amazing work he has done over the last decade with Classroom Champions, Steve Mesler is a great example of one such entrepreneur. Despite bringing home a gold medal for the USA in the 2012 Winter Olympics, former Olympic bobsledder Stever Mesler jokes that his job consisted of "running hard for a few seconds then sitting for a minute". He tells us how he went from an injury-filled track career in college to making the US Olympic Bobsled team. So how did he translate that Olympic experience into building an international non-profit, serving thousands of schools and tens of thousands of K-8 students? The Game Plan co-host Jay Kapoor dives into all aspects of building Classroom Champions with Steve Mesler and uncovers why sports is such an important construct to teach life-long lessons to young students. With August approaching, the guys started talking about getting ready for deer season. Yeah, it's time to start planning...but there may be a little bit of dreaming about what lies beyond the misery of what is traditionally the hottest, nastiest, stormiest month of the year. Anyway, there was a lot of fishing talk, too, as you would expect. And food and music (RIP to ZZ Top's Dusty Hill). Here's your L.V. Hiers gear tip of the week! Kevin's Dad's new book, Echoes of Time: Memories of Learning and Teaching Life's Lessons (The Palm Valley Series), is available now on Amazon! Order it here Here's your Ring Power CAT tip of the week: When the mosquitoes are out… bite back with Ben's! You can find it at Strike-Zone Fishing Jacksonville. Here's your Kirbyco Builders Inc. cooking tip of the week from Chef Gordon: Linguini & Clams Get water boiling for pasta, linguine or spaghetti. Cook 3/4 done. Little olive oil in the pan, couple of spoons of minced garlic. Sauteed on med/low heat for a few minutes. Don't put garlic in hot pan. Pour in some dry white wine. Sauvignon Blanc is best. Throw clams in. Turn heat on high. Cover and steam till clams open. 3 minutes or so. Drain pasta, save a cup of water. Add chopped parsley. Throw pasta in with 2-3 Tbsp of butter and cover stirring frequently. The whole deal takes about 20 minutes. If you cook the clams whole be sure to purge them or it will be gritty from the sand.

In this episode of The Journey of my Mother's Son podcast, I sit down and talk with another one of my former players, Stephen Sauer. Stephen was part of the pioneering Berkshire Red Sox teams. He joined the organization in its second year of existence, just after he graduated high school and while he was attending Kutztown University. He now resides in Winston-Salem, North Carolina and is the head baseball coach and guidance counselor at North Stokes High School in Danbury, NC. As I was mapping out our return trip to Florida, I realized that the Lord had the stars align for us to see Stephen coach a road game against one of theie big rivals, Mt. Airy. One of the things that my mom used to love to do on her travels was surprise people by showing up on their door step, place of employment, or anywhere else that she could track them down at. Honestly, at the time, I thought that it was always kind of goofy. However, as I age, I also seem to now get a certain sense of satisfaction with the element of surprise as well. So, on Tuesday, May 11, 2021, we started the day early in Christiansburg, VA and drove down the Blue Ridge Parkway to have breakfast at Mabry Mill. From there went into Mt. Airy, North Carolina (aka Mayberry) and spent the day checking out the Andy Griffith Museum and all of the Andy Griffith Show attractions around the town. A little after 4:00 PM, we headed over to Mt. Airy High School, ate dinner in the RV, and waited for the bus from North Stokes to arrive. Once the team unloaded and got settled in, I made my way over to the visitors' dugout to surprise someone who I hadn't seen, other than through Facebook, for about 25 years. The look on Stephen's face when he had to give me a double-take was priceless! We talked for a while before the game and he introduced me to some of his assistant coaches. After the game, we made arrangements for me to swing by North Stokes to do this podcast the next day. During the podcast, we reminisce about a ton of memories, from playing against the Colorado Silver Bullets to playing against a team of convicts at Graterford Prison, a maximum-security prison in Pennsylvania. Stephen reflects on his old American Legion coach, Dick Gochnauer and the influence that he had on his life. As a coach now, he still recalls many of the lessons that Dick taught him both on and off the field and passing those lessons on to his players now.

Children are FASCINATED by the life cycles of other creatures. When does something become alive? What about something living that isn't living now... what is it? These probing thoughts enter the child’s mind as they transition from the period of the unconscious absorbent mind to a consciously absorbent mind around age 3. In this week's episode, we'll talk about how to guide our little ones through this sensitive period. You can find the show notes at ChildoftheRedwoods.com. Love,Aubrey

Today we are revisiting David's teaching from our Wednesday of Worship event on March 10. The title is "Life and Death". It is one of the greatest lies from Hell and the world that says that true life is found throwing off rules and parents and teachers and living for yourself and the moment. David also includes his own personal experiences as a teen struggling through this lie. As members of The College English Association prepared for annual conference last spring, the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic led organizers to a now all too familiar decision: the conference had to be cancelled. CEA Critic Editor Jeraldine Kraver was not only gutted about missing this annual event, but now had another challenge: the journals' third issue each year was normally a proceedings of the annual meeting. Along with everything else going on, she was now without a journal issue. But Jeri did what all talented educators know how to do well: change the plan and pivot accordingly. Within a few short weeks, The CEA Critic put out a call for papers for reflections of educators' and students' experiences teaching and learning during the early days of the pandemic. Join us in a candid and congenial conversation to find out how this special issue, "Living the Teaching Life in a Time of COVID-19" came together. I've known Jeff Potter for over 12 years now. We first met when he published his first book, "Whatever Happened to Baseball." We share the same philosophy of teaching life lessons through the game of baseball. I was in the midst of writing my first book, "The Beauty of a Diamond, through the eyes of a Coach." when Jeff and I met. He was a big reason as to why I got it to the finish line and published, I had been working on it for years and no one other than my wife and mom knew that I was writing it, he challenged me to start telling everyone that I was writing a book. When I asked him why, he simply said that those who I tell would hold me accountable to get it finished because they'd ask me about the progress. I followed his advise and he was right. I published in 2012. Jeff now runs the Potter Baseball Tour, in which he takes a group of young people on a 30 day field trip across the Mid-Atlantic region playing barnstorming baseball games and giving back to the communities in which they visit. He has written two additional books since we met, "Saving Baseball" and "Far from being Done."
Welcome back to Bold Perceptions. On today's episode, Jake and George welcome Gino Giovannelli, who runs his own digital marketing business and is a professor at the University of St. Thomas. On top of that, he is a father of three boys and plays drums in a rock band. As one of the most captivating speakers we have hosted, Gino touches on life lessons from teaching college students and what he has learned from many different career paths. We hit on engaging topics such as the current online landscape and why anybody can make money on a self-created site, what it takes and some of his own experiences from building the Super Bowl 52 website from scratch. He sheds light on staying young, being prepared, and trusting your gut. A bio cannot be long enough to cover all the wisdom he gives our listeners from his time on the podcast. This one is so good that he just may be back on. Enjoy.

This is the FINAL WEEK in our summer series on Romans. After explaining our justification (chapters 1-4), and our the initial natural reactions of our flesh to that justification (chapters 5-7), the Apostle Paul is now going to teach us about how to lead a “Life by the Spirit” (Rom. 8:5-17). This involves a radical redefining of WHO you are and WHAT you do in life.

The teaching profession has taken its hits lately, in Florida and across the nation, with morale sagging as lawmakers impose rules that many educators say make the job more of a chore than a craft. Many are heading for the exits, seeking employment where they feel more valued and respected. Yet many more can't see themselves doing anything other than helping prepare children for the world. Count Holly Mickler among them. Mickler, Pasco County's 2018-19 Teacher of the Year, says she often ignores the din of politics and policy so she can focus on her life's calling. It's not always easy, but to her, it's worth it. Hear Mickler talk with reporter Jeff Solochek about how and why she has become, and remains, a successful classroom teacher. In this episode I discuss my work around schools and look at some issues that have to be dealt with during the course of a working week. I also look at the whole area of the centenary of the Armistice in 1918 and the consequences of the harshness of the surrender terms. This has lessons for the work we do with children around the whole area of behaviour contracts and 'punishments' that have the potential to be counterproductive. I also look at Outreach work and how some schools feel that it appropriate to place Outreach teachers' in inadequate and sometimes unsafe work areas. In this my latest episode I discuss my Outreach Support work with children and schools. I look at the parameters we need to work within in order to achieve long term gains for these children as there are no 'quick fixes'. This keeps them from accessing materials they do not need to be seeing at school or on the device. It protects students from outside sources being able to reach them while at school.Cons: When sites are blocked for students, that also means they are blocked from teachers as well. Sam Uhl of The Cheerful Word Sam shares her ups, downs, and sideways on growing (and then scaling back) her life story business. Once the proprietor of a brick-and-mortar life story studio in Hendersonville, North Carolina, Sam now teaches life story classes, coaches writing clients, and publishes books from her new base in Germany. Listen as we discuss: how Sam learned to listen to older adults from a young age all you have to do is show sincere curiosity and ask the first question, and that gets the ball rolling how writing small stories as a home health care professional tipped her off to her true passion (“Some day, I'm going to have a business and tell these stories!”) the story of Sam's Life Story Studio in Hendersonville and being a hub in the community growing, then scaling back her business some thoughts on the obstacles we all face as life story professionals How teaching free life story classes led to a shift in direction Sam taught free classes for a local genealogical society; once they grew in popularity, she started offering paid courses. A favorite class: “How to teach a skeleton to dance” (about talking about the skeletons in the closet) Sam became a Guided Autobiography Instructor from the Birren Institute in California she rented space at an inn to host her classes she charged $295 per six-week class she unwittingly becoming a publisher she became a memoir writing coach she wanted to write bespoke memoir, but that's not what the community wanted; they wanted Sam to be their guide the importance of adapting to what the market wants customers are mostly women 55-75; they want to work with her in partnership mode Despite lots of success, Sam was nearly homeless during this period. All of her money went into the business and supporting the costs of the studio. But she was also happy because she was finally doing what she wanted. [Lesson: We have to tend to the business side of our business, but we also have to believe in what we're doing.] Other topics we cover: some perils of having a partner working virtually over Skype and Facebook Video (in this case, from Germany) the payoff of working virtually making sure you run your business in a way that gives you satisfaction, not just an income the need to cut back on products and services Sam's new focus: writers retreats online workshops coaching writers If you want to teach, look into the Guided Autobiography training. You don't need to reinvent the wheel! Sam took the “Train the Trainer” class with Cheryl Svensson, Ph.D., an experienced GAB instructor who has taught in the Autobiographical Studies Program at the University of Southern California's (USC) School of Gerontology. Want to know more about James Birren, the father of Guided Autobiography? I believe in voice typing! Also called dictation, it's when you speak and your device converts it to text. It's SO much faster than typing with your fingers (or thumbs). Imagine what you could do if you got through your emails or other work just a little faster ...
This month on the Solutions Desk we're taking a suggestion from a listener and exploring housing. In Nikolai, a small village on the Kuskokwim River, a lack of housing was leading to a lack of teachers. The school solved the problem by giving a group of students lots of life lessons.
