Gabriel Bravo is one of the founders of the company Semillas Plantae and farms with Mima Picado at El Tablazo Farm in Costa Rica. In this episode, Gabriel talks about how Semillas Plantae is structured with 4 partners who operate the seed company and how they distribute their seeds. Gabriel explains how they source seeds from outside of Costa Rica and trial them to see what can grow in their bioregion and how he is always on the hunt for Costa Rican heirloom varieties and the stories that come with them. We also discuss what it is like growing seed in the tropics where there is a very humid season that is a nightmare for growing dry seeded crops and a dry season that is much better suited for seed production. We then have a more technical seed growing conversation about growing cilantro for seed and producing seed for biennials such as carrots in a climate with no cold winter to help with vernalisation. Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Invertebrate Sentience Table, published by Daniela R. Waldhorn on the AI Alignment Forum. Write a Review Table Introduction While invertebrates make up the majority of animal species, our knowledge about their capacity for valenced experience is overlooked compared to existing evidence about vertebrates. In particular, whether invertebrates have the capacity to have valenced experience is uncertain, and hence, it remains unclear whether these organisms have a welfare of their own we should care about. Rethink Priorities has been systematically exploring this issue during the past months. First, we examined the philosophical difficulties inherent in the detection of instances of morally significant pain and pleasure in nonhumans. Second, given the current epistemic state about invertebrate consciousness, we have been compiling and analyzing relevant scientific evidence regarding this issue. In particular, we investigated the degree to which different features potentially indicative of phenomenal consciousness are found throughout different taxa. In a second post, we described our approach, the rationale of this project, and its limitations. The features we believe to be most relevant for assessing invertebrate sentience are explained in detail in a third, fourth, and fifth post. In this sixth post, we present our summary of findings, both in narrative form and as a database. Overview The database is available here. It is an interactive table, where we summarize scientific data about 53 features potentially indicative of the capacity for valenced experience and examine the degree to which these features are found throughout 18 representative biological taxa. 12 invertebrate taxa are included: honey bees (genus Apis), cockroaches (genus Periplaneta), fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster), ants (family Formicidae), spiders (order Araneae), the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans, sea hares (genus Aplysia), moon jellyfish (genus Aurelia), crabs (infraorder Brachyura), crayfish (family Cambaridae), and octopuses (family Octopodidae). For comparative purposes, we included three kinds of non-animal organisms –prokaryotes, protists and plants (kingdom Plantae)– and three vertebrate species –chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus), cows (Bos taurus), and humans (Homo Sapiens). For each taxon and feature, we reviewed the existing literature and determined whether there was sufficient scientific data to make a call as to whether that taxon possesses the feature in question. Then, we evaluated the likelihood that the taxon possesses that feature. For those cases where we found direct evidence, we established four different responses corresponding to four rough probability ranges: “Likely No”: representing credences of 0% - 25% “Lean No”: 25% - 50% “Lean Yes”: 50% - 75% “Likely Yes”: 75% - 100% As mentioned in a previous post, these four “credence buckets” represent our position regarding whether an animal possesses a feature; they do not necessarily represent the extent to which the animal possesses that feature. Given that current evidence about invertebrate consciousness is limited and unequal –i.e. some taxa have been much more studied than others, or specific features, unlike others, are well-studied phenomena– our credences are not necessarily well-calibrated in all cases. Further research is likely to contribute to revising and improving our confidence and reliability in our assessment of features potentially indicative of consciousness in different invertebrate taxa. On top of that, there are several cases where no direct evidence of a specific feature for a given taxon was found. For those cases in which there have been only indirect studies and a specific feature was expected to be observed but, finally, no evidence arises, we used the category “not observed”. When no direct or ...

Elas possuem raiz, caule, folha, flores, semente e fruto. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bgscast/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/bgscast/support

What happens when you drink a can of CBD water and try to do podcast? Everything becomes interesting, and everything that's already interesting becomes amazing. Check out our interview with Thomas's entrepreneurial journey, starting from his teens and leading to his current endeavor with The Plantae.
Jessica Henderson (Upright Citizen’s Brigade) came by with her green thumb to talk about something that gets her all hot and bothered: queer ladies kissing. BUT ALSO PLANTS. From sexy orchids to emo peace lilies, we talk about the importance of self care, natural healing, and queerness all in relation to the kingdom Plantae. This episode is sprouting with gayness because we spend the first half-hour talking about things like our favorite TV kisses and what punishments we’ll subject straight people to once we’ve taken over the world (any and all straight listeners will be spared!). Also, if you’re headed to Clexacon this April, be sure to stop in on Jessica’s panel about queer voices in comedy. -Keep the podcast a-lez and gay by donating to our Patreon, where you can get some sapphic swag. -For related content, follow us on Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and Leave Us a Review if you like what you hear! -Like our theme song? In which we discuss dumb influencers, accidentally stealing plants, and Uma Thurman.
In this episode, we discuss a relatively recent paper from Jeff’s lab that illustrates the pros and cons of planning authorship lists in advance. We have an honest discussion about publishing in “high impact” journals (please note the ironic air quotes) as a pre-tenure professor and how his lab members made deliberate trade-offs in work-life balance to get experiments done quickly. Today’s paper is Hufford et al. “Comparative population genomics of maize domestication and improvement”, published in Nature Genetics in 2012. In this episode, Ivan and Liz talk with José Dinneny, a staff member at the Carnegie Institute for Sciences in Palo Alto, CA. We discuss a recent paper that describes a novel system for imaging root growth that balances the need for visualization with the need for more physiological growth conditions. The paper is Rellan-Alvarez et al., “GLO-roots: an imaging platform enabling multidimensional characterization of soil-grown root systems”, published in 2015. In this episode Ivan and Liz talk with Siobhan Braybrook, Career Development Fellow at The Sainsbury Laboratory, University of Cambridge and soon-to-be Assistant Professor of Molecular, Cell and Developmental Biology at UCLA. We discuss two of her papers and discuss how to handle the grey areas of science and of scientific careers. And, maybe, we talk a bit about scientific impact). The papers are Peaucelle et al., 2011 and Braybrook & Peaucelle, 2013. In this episode, Ivan and Liz talk with Luca Comai, a Professor of Plant Biology at the Genome Center at University of California, Davis. We discuss a paper he published as part of his transition from industry to academia that he feels illustrates a mistake he made in choosing a research direction. We have a fascinating conversation about the power and the peril of striking out in new research directions and Luca gives his advice on grant-writing. The paper is “Developmental expression of tomato heat shock cognate protein 80" by Koenig & Comai, Plant Phys 1992.
