My name is Rainetta Jones, I was born in Port of Spain Trinidad and Tobago. I came to theUnited States at the age of 14 with my family. I attended Martin Luther King Jr. HS in Manhattan NYC. I would like to note that I do not have any memories of High School Lunch Break for three years. I graduated at 17 years of age and attended University of Buffalo. My tenure at UB was short lived due to serious neurological anomalies which I later learned was “Brain Scrambling Technologies. While at UB I wanted to pursue a degree in Micro and Molecular Biology; however, that didn't pan out. After Buffalo, I attended Sheffield University in England as a study abroad student. Upon returning to the US, I took time off to Invent, Model, and Dance. In 2000 I had a meeting with a “friend” about my two inventions, the iPod and Kindle and also a novel conceptual hosiery design. All of which were stolen. Later on I learned he had connections to Steve Jobs and was invited by him to the launch of iTunes in Cupertino California. After that meeting I was followed by a Russian Jew who befriended me. He invited me to go to England a couple of days after September 11th, 2001. It wasn't until 2016, I was told that both David and Yuri were Mossad agents and that they had to get me out of the US for the launch of the iPod. I later became a Certified Administrative Professional and worked at the United Nations andseveral other Government agencies in NYC. In 2019 I graduated from Empire State College inBusiness Administration. I have no memories of a Secret Space Program however, I do knowthat my life has been filled with extraterrestrial experiences. After graduation I created the Micro- Business Model using business concepts on a micro-scale for those who would like to start a business with very little money. Today I do spiritual consultations and teach online classes oncea month.

Ellen Langer, a prominent psychologist known for her work in the areas of mindfulness and the illusion of control, has conducted various studies that explore the impact of mental states, attitudes, and the surrounding environment on physical health and well-being. While Langer has engaged in a broad range of research topics over her career, one of her notable areas of focus involves examining how positive changes in one's environment or perceptions can lead to measurable improvements in health outcomes. One of Langer's relevant studies in this context is her work on the effects of mental outlook on aging, which, while not directly about surrounding environments with positive pictures, aligns closely with the idea of how environmental cues can influence physiological and psychological states. In a landmark study known as the "counterclockwise" study, Langer and her colleagues found that when elderly participants were placed in an environment that mirrored the settings of their youth—thereby encouraging them to perceive themselves as younger—the participants showed measurable improvements in physical strength, flexibility, and even eyesight. This study underscored the powerful link between mindset, environmental cues, and physical health. Langer's extensive research has consistently highlighted the importance of perception, mindfulness, and the environment in health and well-being, suggesting that even subtle shifts in our surroundings or how we engage with them can have profound effects on our physical health. This body of work encourages a broader understanding of health that encompasses not just biological factors but also the psychological and environmental contexts in which individuals live.

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Guide to rationalist interior decorating, published by mingyuan on June 19, 2023 on LessWrong. Recently someone asked me to write a guide to rationalist interior decorating, since there's a set of products and best practices (originating with CFAR and Lightcone) that have gotten wide adoption. I'm perhaps not the very most qualified person to write this post, but I've been into interior decorating since before the Lightcone team got into it, and I basically know what they do, plus they're all very busy whereas I wasn't doing anything else with my time anyway. So here's this post, which I have written all by myself like a loose cannon; blame me for everything. I should point out that this post is anthropological, not normative. That is to say, this isn't a description of what I believe to be ‘optimal' interior decorating; instead it's a guide to how to make your space more like what's come to be standard for rationalist coworking spaces and group houses in Berkeley (and to a lesser extent elsewhere — I've seen a Lightcone-style coworking space in New York and lumenators in Oxford!). That said, I do think the reason a lot of the products have gotten adoption is that they're pretty good! Lighting Lighting is so important. The wrong light can give you a migraine or make you depressed. The right light can make you marvel in wonder at its beauty (like sunshine through a forest canopy, or incandescent fairy lights). I love lighting. All hail lighting. Lighting basics I'm going to cover mostly what you should be looking for when buying (mainly LED) lights, but if you're interested in the topic of interior lighting more broadly, I recommend this article, which goes into more depth and technical details. You should always be able to find the CRI, color temperature, and lumens of a product listed on the box or the online product page. I don't think these should be different in different countries. CRI (color rendering index) CRI, or color rendering index, “is the measurement of how light affects how you see color”. You ideally want lights with CRI >95 but this is hard to find; 90+ is a more realistic goal and will be nearly as good, while 80+ is cheaper but noticeably worse. CRI only applies to buying LEDs — incandescent lights all have a CRI of 100 because they, like the sun, produce light via blackbody radiation. Color temperature Color temperature matters a lot when choosing lights! 2700K (‘warm white') will be noticeably yellow, 5000K (‘daylight') will be noticeably blue, and 4000K (‘soft white') is approximately white. The K stands for Kelvin, by analogy to blackbody radiators. Color temperature is largely a matter of personal preference, but that doesn't mean it isn't important. The original lumenators used a mix of 2700K and 5000K bulbs (to imitate sunlight?), but personally I find the bluer bulbs depressing, so I use all 2700K. Lumens Lumens are a measure of brightness. As a reference point, the most common type of incandescent bulb (60 Watts) was about 800 lumens. Brighter bulbs draw more power (though this is mostly negligible for LEDs) and are generally more expensive. Lumens specifically measure how much light something emits; note that the placement of lights and the characteristics of the room will affect how much light you actually receive. I like this article on the difference between lux and lumens (mainly because of the cool graphic). Diffusion This one isn't a technical term, but everyone knows that looking directly at a bright light is painful / unpleasant / maybe bad for your vision. If you're using really bright lights, you'll probably want something that diffuses the light without absorbing too much of it. This is the purpose of lampshades, light fixtures, and the paper lanterns used on lumenators. Bright lighting Rationalists first got into really bright...

He's a master at mixing vintage and new, and when I need some home inspiration, he's the first person I go to. Nate and his partner Jeremiah have just started their second season of their HGTV show, The Nate and Jeremiah Home Project, and Nate has also just launched his own line of home goods, Nate Home. Being that he's a vintage guy, I knew he had to be a collector of sorts. Nate's got an amazing collection of vintage furniture and home goods, some of which you can buy directly from him, but a lot that he's keeping in his personal collection and homes as well. We talk about how his nights usually end with him scouring auctions on his phone and how he's hunting while on vacation. There's a lot of exciting projects he's got going on, some of which are still under wraps, but one thing remains the same, and that's that he's still hunting and sourcing at all times. But those two brands can't be mentioned without naming Todd Snyder, who is truly at the helm of American Menswear as we know it today. An Alumni of both brands previously mentioned, Todd decided to start an eponymous menswear company at the age 40 and has taken everything he has learned from his previous endeavors, and combined it with his personal taste to create a brand that everyone should be aware of today. GQ did after all once describe him as the guy who guys trust to do what they themselves can't: make them look and feel like better versions of themselves. But Todd's not one to shy away from letting the brands he loves do what they're best at, and he's found a way to do collaborations with quite a few of them, like Champion. Todd has an ongoing collaboration with them which has become some of his best sellers, but what most might not know about Todd is that his love for Champion came early on in his career. He's got a collection of Champion that exceeds the number 2000 and is ever growing. From hunting basements in Japan to getting a separate warehouse to store them all, its safe to say he's a collector at heart. He actually called our chat a “therapy session” so I think we hit some heartstrings. Visit one of his many stores and you'll see he's a collector of many things, from Champion, to furniture, watches, you name it. Until then, please enjoy, Todd Snyder, for Collectors Gene Radio.Todd Snyder - https://www.toddsnyder.com/Hidden Pond Main - https://www.hiddenpondmaine.com/

Are you a generalist interior designer who takes on anyone and everyone as a client? Do you get distracted by the latest interior design trends you tend to bounce around a lot? Is it always a matter of taking any job opportunity you can get, even if it isn't sustainable? I get it. I fell for those traps too when I started. And the problem with being a generalist is you don't honor what you're good at. You often get distracted instead of focusing on what you do best. It's okay to an extent to serve everybody only if you want to experience certain clients or certain projects to find out if it's something you really want to get into or not. But after you weed them out, what do you do next? Join me in this week's episode as I discuss with Liz Toombs how she got into a unique niche based on her college experience, and share how she uses her niche to market and connect with people all over the country. Recorded March 6, 2021Guest notes: Dara Segbefia, Interior Decorator (but we call her a House Whisperer)Questions/Topics:How did you get started in the decorating? What's the difference Interior Design and Interior Decorating? What's the process for engaging with you? How do you take a client from a magazine clipping  to a reality in their real space? How do you deal with difficult clients? Have you ever had to fire a client?Tell us about the pretty rocks (crystals) in many of your reveal pictures. What if I don't have a big budget? If I only have $500 can you still help me?How is cost determined? Guest Quotes:I ask a lot of personal questions [of the clients] because every room has energy in it. I ask, "How do you want to feel in this space"?I ask questions to dig into who you really are then I find the core pieces that an speak your love language.Every time I put a crystal in someone's home, they love the feeling. It's my way of reminding them that there is peace within their home.I love to put at least one DYI item within every client's home to give it that personal touch. I'm really big on it. That's what I believe really set me apart from other interior decorators.Patience has to be one of the main things with getting your space together. You don't want to rush buying furniture and then not be completely invested in it by the end. That's a common mistake. Don't rush! When I bought my current house I hired an interior decorator to help me.... It was the best money I'd spent. When I tell you I never ever regretted any of the money I spent on my decorator at all... I didn't. - Rhumel Mentions:GuestInstagram: @mixxykreationInstagram: @TheMixxyExperiencePlease support our podcast:Please rate/review, subscribe and share!!Cashapp:$GirrrlPodcastDonate: PatreonHave a question or topic you want us to talk about? In this episode, we bring back a familiar voice from season 2 of the podcast, Steve Ryan! Steve is not only a designer, stager, and POP alumni, but he is also a vocal contributor in our designer meet-up community on Facebook, jumping in to provide feedback and helping other designers in our community which just warms my heart! About Steve Ryan Steve Ryan of Steve Ryan Designs.  I'm a Toronto-based Home Stager and Designer working in the GTA since 2016. I frequently collaborate on staging projects with Details Staging & Design. I'm a graduate of the Interior Decorating program at George Brown College and an OG member of Rebecca Hays' Power of Process. In this episode, Steve and I dive into the differences that we both have seen between men and women in the design industry. We focus on entrepreneurs and how from our experiences there is such a difference of mindset between men and women. Steve shares his observations about the difference between how men and women respond to situations. During the second part of our chat, we talk about money mindset, and how that really affects your business. I share my personal mindset journey when it comes to money, where I am right now, and the exercises that have gotten me there.   You are the trade. The client is the client. They are NOT entitled to your trade discounts. You shouldn't share them, you shouldn't pass it on to them. The trade discount is for you. You are the trade! It is basically a commission that the vendor is giving you because you acted as an unpaid salesperson for their company. So stop thinking of it as a discount, and start thinking of it as a commission, because a commission is earned. You earned it, and you're entitled to every penny.
