This summer has been hot. We're seeing some of the hottest days on record, and the extreme heat is without borders impacting not just the United States, but countries across the globe. So welcome back to episode number three of our four-part series in support of FEMA's Summer Ready campaign, where we're exploring the effects of extreme heat and how collaboration among local, state, tribal, and federal partners can lead to more educated communities. Heat and extreme heat continues to impact communities across the globe. We've seen more frequent events and cascading disasters over the past few years. Staying ahead of them requires we review our response plans regularly and adjust as needed, but also think in both short and long terms to ensure a whole community approach to keeping people safe. With that in mind, and as individuals are experiencing more frequent and extreme heat waves, which we've seen throughout this summer. On this episode, we will discuss one state's innovative effort to keep residents safe from extreme temperatures. California recently launched one of the nation's first statewide multi-ethnic awareness and education campaigns designed to keep Californians safe during extreme heat. So in this episode, we'll learn all about what it means to be heat ready in California.

With that in mind, this episode is the second of a four-part series. In support of FEMA's Summer Ready campaign, we're exploring the effects of extreme heat and how collaboration amongst state, local, tribal, and federal partners can lead to more educated communities. Specifically on this episode, we talk through how emergency managers can identify impacts, gaps, and challenges that extreme heat has on our critical infrastructure like roads, bridges, and railways, and how we can all collectively increase awareness, provide resources, and make our communities more resilient.

Did you know there's a good chance you're unknowingly sharing your body with parasites? Sorry to break it to you, but most people play host to those nasty little critters. Parasites can cause a range of symptoms beyond gastrointestinal distress. The two main types of intestinal parasites are helminths, which are multi-cell parasitic worms, and protozoa, which are microscopic, single-cell parasites. Protozoa are harder to detect because they are invisible to the naked eye and may not cause immediate symptoms. Parasite infection can occur through a variety of means, including swimming in contaminated water, consuming unwashed produce or undercooked seafood, caring for others, outdoor activities, and drinking contaminated water. Symptoms of a parasite can vary depending on the type of parasite but often include gastrointestinal distress, weight loss, chronic fatigue, anemia, joint pain, bruxism, and fevers. Intestinal parasites can also be a trigger for inflammatory and autoimmune diseases. So they're a pretty serious problem, difficult to detect and even more difficult to eradicate. Hurricane Season in the United States spans from June 1 to November 30, and in an effort to promote readiness for this potentially perilous time, experts from all over the world have traditionally joined together at the National Hurricane Conference, and this week's guest, Greg Padgett is one of the people responsible for that.Greg is an award-winning meteorologist who serves as one of the main organizers of the conference. The 2022 edition recently happened in April and in this episode, Greg and John recap its many highlights.Greg also talks about the future of hurricane readiness in the United States.
