You may recognize W. Kamau Bell from his multi-Emmy award-winning docuseries United Shades of America, or from his Substack Who's With Me, or from his commercials for the ACLU. If you're a long-time ACLU supporter, you'll know Bell has worked with us for more than a decade as our Artist Ambassador for Racial Justice. We're excited to have him as our interim host for our At Liberty podcast, where he will host conversations with leaders, legal experts, artists, and storytellers dedicated to the fight for civil rights and civil liberties. In this episode, Emmy-nominated producer, television host, food expert, New York Times best-selling author and ACLU Artist Ambassador for Immigrants' Rights and Women's Rights PADMA LAKSHMI joins us with her good friend, comedian and former Saturday Night Live castmember PUNKIE JOHNSON, to discuss the intersection of identity, comedy...and voting. Known for her critically-acclaimed and Emmy-nominated Hulu series “Taste the Nation”, and as host and executive producer for 19 seasons of Bravo's two-time Emmy-winning series “Top Chef,” Padma tells us how she is exploring stand-up comedy as a storyteller, her meet-cute with Punkie over tacos at Questlove's house, and why reproductive freedom and immigrants' rights can also be fought for on the comedy stage. For her part, Punkie talks about what it was like to be on SNL, why she needed to leave, and her text thread with friends asking all the questions about politics she didn't understand. Through it all, they also talk about joy, which we are looking to bring you on this day before the election.

That Show Hasn't Been Funny In Years: an SNL podcast on Radio Misfits
Cast member Punkie Johnson has announced her departure from "Saturday Night Live" after four seasons. In this episode, Nick reflects on her time on the show, highlighting some of her most memorable moments and discussing her comedy career—past, present, and future. The episode features hilarious segments, mostly from Weekend Update, where Punkie did some of her best work. Nick plays back some of her funniest moments, including her impression of a convict who jumped over a barrier to attack a judge during a trial, her real-life story about dealing with family as a lesbian during Christmas, and an uproarious bit where Mikey Day reveals her tendency to not know any celebrities' correct names. Nick also discusses her wonderful role in last year's brilliant movie "Bottoms" and shares a great Seth Meyers interview about her career and time on SNL. As we say goodbye to Punkie Johnson, Nick celebrates her talent and wishes her the best in her continuing comedy career. [Ep85]

We had an amazing conversation about the early days in Punkie's career that ended with her sharing a story about a big comedy breakthrough she just had in Indiana. What does a musical-turned-film cultural phenomenon about the US founding father Alexander Hamilton performed by a majority POC cast have to do with roller skating? Nothing but for the fact that many skaters are huge HAM fans. (Not to mention there's also a decent-sized Venn diagram overlap between musical theater nerds and derby peeps.) So listen to Coco, Punkie, Scarbs, and PEGGY--err, Magic--dissect why HAMILTON is so special, important and, at times, problematic. And yet we'll never be able to say no to this (musical)!
