And a snapshot of the final five Grow A Small Business Questions: What do you think is the hardest thing in growing a small business? Laura Hindson believes the hardest thing in growing a small business is that "every problem is my problem." This encapsulates the challenge of being a business owner, where the responsibility for solving all issues ultimately falls on the owner's shoulders. What's your favourite business book that has helped you the most? Laura Hindson's favorite business book that has helped her the most is "How to Build a Billion Dollar Business" by Radek Sali. Episode 31 of The Blank Canvas Podcast with Radek Sali. It takes sheer guts and determination to succeed on a grand scale and there is usually some point where the person puts everything they have on the line. This week’s guest is no exception and fortunately for him, the gamble paid off. Radek Sali - started out working the candy bar in his local suburban Village cinema and worked his way up to Operations Manager of Village Roadshow. Radek joined the Swisse Wellness group as Operations Manager in 2005, a couple years later he’d become CEO, he steered the company from it’s annual turnover of $14 million to it’s sale 10 years on - for 1.7 Billion dollars. Incredibly, just nine months before that deal went ahead, the shareholders of Swisse nearly accepted an offer of just $30 million, which would have left Radek bankrupt due to $15 million in personal debt. I directed many TV commercials for Swisse leading up to the sale of the company - in particular their campaign for the Rio Olympics. The staff culture was something to behold at Swisse and played a huge role in the success of brand, and this was clearly driven by their inspirational leader. Radek’s latest role is Chairman of Light Warrior - an investment organisation with a mission to help fund and support an array of other businesses and entrepreneurs, particularly those with a positive societal impact.https://lightwarrior.com/ W: https://theblankcanvaspodcast.com.au/ W: https://leerogers.com.au/ SOCIALS Insta: @theblankcanvaspodcast FB - The Blank Canvas Podcast Twitter: @blankcanvaspod THE BLANK CANVAS TEAM Produced by Lee Rogers & Rien MacDonald. Radek Sali always wanted to be an entrepreneur, and he personifies this crazy journey. In the mould of Sir Richard Branson, he has put himself "out there", been the spokesman and front-man of his company, gone high-profile, surrounded himself with brilliant and famous people, and taken all the spoils and falls that come with the name "entrepreneur". Radek Sali has tasted the sweet success of building a global brand and selling it at a great price as fierce tail-winds blew. He was original in his thinking about marketing, original in his thinking about brand, original in his thinking about ambassadors and had the guts and dare to try new things. It worked. But, past success is not always an indicator of smooth sailing ahead. As an investor, he made some of the moves he never took as a business owner. His backing of high profile celebrity chef George Calombaris has not ended well, and whilst the ink is still drying on this company decline, Radek is honest enough to share his thought on the matter. Enjoy our discussion.

Radek Sali is best known for his work at Swisse Vitamins, he was key to the company’s early growth and he would later go on to become the CEO. A few years ago he and his colleagues sold their final stake in the company they had built, and Radek went out on his own, to build a family office that invests in all sorts of ventures, that are all focussed on wellness. And, one of his key investments was to seed an impact investment fund, called, wait for it, The Impact Fund. Radek is a big picture thinker, and he knows how to manage a dynamic organisation, but as I did research for this chat, and after speaking to people who work with him, it became clear that at the core of Radek’s power is his ability to nurture the people around him, and to promote culture, above all else. And there’s ample proof in the fact that so many of Radek’s colleagues from his previous role have moved over to help him build his next venture. MyDNA is potentially a very complicated business. It is after all, dealing with my (and yours) DNA! That;'s why founder Dr. Lior Rauchberger is working hard at simplifying a complicated business. Although officially a medical doctor, Dr. Lior Rauchberger is equally passionate about technology and innovation. In fact, if the truth be known, he's a bit of a gadgets freak! After practising medicine for 9-years, he jumped ship and started Urban Intelligence, a business installing high tech into homes and offices. With that humming along beautifully, he then sought out his next venture which turned out to be MyDNA … a business that enables you to use your DNA to make the right health choices around things like diet and medication. I was introduced to Lior by past guest Radek Sali from Swisse Multivitamins, so I knew he'd be good. Truth is, Lior was exceptional. His passion for business, technology and marketing is addictive, as we cover plenty of ground including: Why he left the relative safety of the medical profession His love of the entrepreneur's life How he chooses his business ventures How he markets MyDNA - a service that most don't know exists, and for those that do many think it's hokus pokus! And so much more   But the marketing gold doesn't stop there, in this episode you'll also discover: I'll show you how to create an insanely helpful email series And we go back into the vault, revisiting a chat I had with high performance expert Mark McKeon   Here's what caught my attention from chatting with MyDNA's Dr Lior Rauchberger: Simplicity - Lior is making the complicated simple. And not just simple to understand, but simple to buy. For example, on the Diet Report page of the My DNA website, it simple reads “Are you on the best diet for your body? Our DNA test can reveal how your body will respond to what you eat and drink, and how you exercise.” Order Now. $99. Marketing challenge - Lior and his team aren't kidding themselves about the marketing challenge that lies ahead, knowing they have quite some work to do to break through the cynicism and lack of understanding around the whole DNA thing. Distribution - Lior's clearly identified the three groups My DNA needs to get onside - Health professionals, consumers and pharmacists - and has three distinct marketing strategies for them. Sometimes I see business owners stuck trying to influence just one group of influencers, when the reality is, most business have a number of groups. If that's you, then maybe it's time to cast your net wider.   Links & Resources mentioned: MyDNA's website Dr. Lior Rauchberger on Twitter Interview with high performance coach Mark McKeon Mark McKeon's Go Zone book 3 steps to create an insanely helpful email series   Please support these businesses who make this show possible: Dale Beaumont's 52 Ways – An amazing free 1-day live event for business owners where you'll discover 52 ways to boost your business profits. Radek Sali knows a thing or two about celebrity endorsement - as the 40 year old, retired CEO Radek Sali of Swisse Multivitamins - a wellness business that sells supplements, skincare and superfoods, he's used celebrity endorsement as a way to build one of Australia's biggest brands. I sat next to Radek recently at a Hawthorn Football Club function, and I was pretty damn excited, as the Swisse brand is one that I've admired from a distance for many years. From it's high quality packaging, to it's brand consistency, to it's relentless celebrity endorsement efforts (think Nicole Kidman, Ellen Degeneres, Ricky Ponting to name a few) and high frequency TV and print advertising schedule, Swisse would have to be one of the most well-known and respected brands in Australia. Radek started there in 2005 as the Operations Manager, he left there last year as a part owner having sold the business for $1.7 billion! He attributes celebrity endorsement strategy and an honest and meaningful business culture to the brand's success Awards won by Radek and his team include BRW's Most Successful Business of the Year (2012); GQ Businessman of the Year; and in 2016 Ernst & Young's Young Entrepreneur of the Year (for Pharmaceuticals). Plus in episode 371 of Australia's best marketing podcast: Resident techspert Dale Beaumont from 52 Ways brings back the GIPH … not the GIMP, the GIPH! I share another low cost marketing idea that'll increase your average dollar amount per sale And we go back into The Small Business Big Marketing Show's vault, revisiting a past interview with the creator of the world's most viral marketing video Here's what caught my attention from chatting with Radek Sali of Swisse Multivitamins: I love the idea that as brand builders we're part of a Ferrari Formula One crew, and that whatever we're working on we should be at full throttle, ready for it to all disintegrate once we get to the finish line. “The sky is just the beginning.” - talk about glass half full! Radek is one of the more optimistic people I've ever met. I love how he's always looking for a way to make something work. I loved how he visited his retailers when he first stepped into the business all those years ago. If he hadn't done that, he wouldn't have uncovered the celebrity endorsement strategy that Centrim were using so well. I loved his modesty. I mean the guy is responsible or building one of Australia's most successful brands, he's made $255M in doing so … but his ego was very in check. I loved the the 3 pillars of premium, proven and aspirational, through which all business decisions were evaluated.
