Technology and innovation are increasingly being applied to manage the growing threat of wildfires. Pete Miller, CEO of The Institutes, welcomes Bill Clerico, founder of Convective Capital, to discuss how early-stage firetech companies are making a difference in improving community resilience, mitigating risk and enabling a safer and faster response to fires. Bill shares his personal experience with wildfires and how it led him to start Convective Capital, a venture capital fund that invests in early-stage wildfire technology companies. Bill highlights the three main problems these startups are solving: building resilient landscapes, creating fire-adapted communities, and ensuring safe and effective response. He provides examples of companies in each category, such as BurnBot for resilient landscapes, Fire Aside for fire-adapted communities, and Pano for safe and effective response. Clerico also emphasizes the need for greater collaboration among stakeholders, including utilities, insurers, and regulators, to address the challenges of wildfire prevention and mitigation. Finally he shares some ideas on how insurers can fund pilots to capture data that could save billions down the road by reducing wildfire risk.Resources:Convective Capital: https://www.convectivecapital.com/BurnBot: https://burnbot.com/ Fire Aside: https://www.fireaside.com/ Pano: https://www.pano.ai/ OnSight Technology: https://onsightops.com/ Red Sky Summit: https://redskysummit.com/ Insurance Institute for Business & Home Safety (IBHS): https://ibhs.org/Predict & Prevent website: www.predictandprevent.orgSign up for our weekly Predict & Prevent newsletter: www.predictandprevent.org/newsletter

When the crackle of a firefighter's radio signals another mission, Captain Jeremy Norton of the Minneapolis Fire Department knows the dance with unpredictability begins anew. Our latest episode welcomes Jeremy, offering nearly 24 years of stories that reveal the courage and vulnerability behind the uniform. His journey—shifting from the strategic role of a battalion chief to the fiery intensity of frontline service—sheds light on the adaptability needed in emergency response. Jeremy's candid musings on retirement illustrate a philosophy that many in-service grapple with finding the right moment to step back with health and vitality still on their side.Facing the aftermath of incidents involving George Floyd, Jeremy discusses the emotional and systemic strains that bear down on first responders. This episode peels back the protective layers to discuss the unrecognized battles with PTSD, the fight against toxic masculinity within their ranks, and the pressing need for cultural change. We dissect the embedded bias and inequality that still courses through the veins of fire departments, recognizing the historical barriers that have shaped the current professional landscape. It's an honest look at the legacy of a profession and the ongoing struggle for a more inclusive and supportive brotherhood and sisterhood of firefighters.Leadership in the fire service isn't just about barking orders; it's a nuanced art that Jeremy Norton has refined through years of experience and introspection, as shared in his enlightening book "Trauma Sponges." This episode traverses the spectrum of human behavior in crises, the systemic failures that exacerbate them, and the toll they take on those who serve. Jeremy's commitment to compassionate leadership and mental health awareness stands as a beacon for current and future generations of firefighters as they navigate the high-stakes, life-or-death realities of their calling. Today's episode is truly special: "Pathways to Purpose: Lessons, Legacy & Power of Kindness." It's an honour to have Jane Tewson and Jane Rowe join me, two remarkable individuals I respect deeply and who inspire me to try to be a better person and whose lives serve as a profound reminder of the impact we can all make. This episode is profound in its simplicity and powerful in its message. It encourages us to step back and consider humanity as a whole, our individual contributions, and the realisation that it's often the small, simple acts, rather than grand gestures, that have the power to create change. Jane Tewson's journey is a remarkable tale of resilience and commitment to global change. Overcoming challenges with dyslexia and leaving school without formal qualifications, she blazed a trail in philanthropy, beginning with her work on homelessness in London. Her dramatic experience of surviving cerebral malaria in a Sudanese refugee camp became the impetus for founding Comic Relief and the globally recognized Red Nose Day, collectively raising close to $2 billion for vital causes. After moving to Australia and facing a personal battle with further health challenges, Jane continued to drive change, founding Igniting Change and persisting in changing lives. Jane Rowe's story is equally compelling and inspiring. Growing up in England from a privileged background, then immersing herself deep into the punk era and battling personal heroin addiction, she married and moved to Melbourne, Australia. Becoming a single mother, the need to find work led her to drug counselling, where she witnessed first-hand the devastating effects of substance abuse on families. This inspired her to establish the Mirabel Foundation in 1998, focusing on supporting children impacted or orphaned by their parent's drug addiction and death. Her leadership has changed the lives of thousands of children, altering their life trajectories and breaking cycles of addiction. Jane has been recognized with an Order of Australia. In this episode, we dive deep into the experiences that shaped Jane Tewson and Jane Rowe's philosophies and actions. We explore the transformative moments in their lives, the motivations behind their incredible work, and how their stories can help us frame our own lives, helping us see the people, not the labels, in society. This episode is profound in its simplicity and powerful in its message. It encourages us to step back and consider humanity as a whole, our individual contributions, and the realisation that it's often the small, simple acts, rather than grand gestures, that have the power to create change. This conversation is a journey into the heart of kindness and its ability to ripple through the world, reminding us of our place in it and the impact we can make. 175 - Igniting Change in Your Life I delve into the concept of achieving our goals and creating our best life, drawing inspiration from the book "A Whole New You, Six Steps to Ignite Change for Your Best Life" by Bret Blumenthal. I discuss the importance of creating a mission statement, to guide our life's goals. These mission statements can be about work, health, or other aspects of life and should reflect the qualities and characteristics we want to live by and the legacy we want to leave in the world. I then discuss the concept of a vision statement, a visual representation of our goals, like a vision board. The next step in the process is to identify what we want to achieve and map the gap between where we are and where we want to be. This involves assessing our emotional and physical state and imagining what our ideal self would look like and feel like and how it would impact those around us and our activities. Having a flexible mindset during this stage is essential, as it allows us to adapt and find ways to make our goals happen. We should focus on our strengths and accomplishments and bury our past failures, only taking away the lessons we learned from them. Throughout this process, it's important to visualize our goals and recognize that we are the ones in control of our lives. We should create a vision statement or vision board representing our end goal, which could be something as simple as a collage of pictures from the internet. Sharing our goals with others can also be beneficial as they can provide support and encouragement. It's also crucial to break down our goals into small, achievable tasks and to set specific start dates for each task. This way, we can keep track of our progress and stay accountable. Finally, it's crucial to acknowledge and reward ourselves when we progress towards our goals and to hold ourselves accountable. Accountability can be built through various means, such as having a workout partner, hiring a life coach, or even using a habit tracker like Streaks. Understanding how accountability works best for us can greatly increase our chances of achieving our goals. The challenge for you, the listener, is to come up with one small goal, write out a mission statement for it, and create a vision board or vision statement. https://startwithsmallsteps.com/?p=3839 https://www.brettblumenthalstudio.com/brett-blumenthal-books-and-publications Jill's Links https://affiliate.notion.so/NorthwoodsJill https://affiliate.notion.so/NorthwoodsAI https://www.buymeacoffee.com/smallstepspod https://twitter.com/SmallStepsPod Email the podcast at jill@startwithsmallsteps.com

Revolutionary EV1: Igniting Change November 15As the late 1990s saw a surge in concerns over environmental sustainability and the impact of traditional automobiles, General Motors boldly embarked on a revolutionary journey with the introduction of the EV1—an electric vehicle marking a significant milestone in automotive history. Launched November 14, 1996, the EV1 was far more than just a car; it was a daring statement about the future of transportation. In an era when electric vehicles were mere fledglings, GM seized the reins, crafting a car that challenged the status quo and carved a path toward a greener automotive future. The EV1's design and technology were undeniably ahead of their time. Its sleek aerodynamic body resembled a futuristic two-seater coupe, while its lightweight aluminum frame bolstered efficiency. Equipped with advanced features such as regenerative braking, which transformed kinetic energy back into electricity to extend its range, the EV1's electric motor delivered impressive acceleration and boasted an admirable range on a single charge—especially considering the era's technological limitations.Although innovative in design and well-received by those fortunate enough to drive it, the EV1 faced challenges and controversies. Limited range, concerns over battery technology, and high production costs led GM to restrict EV1 production. Furthermore, the decision to lease rather than sell outright contributed to exclusivity and uncertainty among customers. Ultimately, in 2003, GM made the contentious decision to recall and crush most leased EV1s, sparking criticism from both EV enthusiasts and environmentalists. The reasons cited for the EV1's demise included high maintenance costs, challenges in servicing limited production vehicles, and a belief that advancements in hybrid technology would eclipse all-electric vehicles. Yet its legacy endures. The trailblazing EV1 reshaped perceptions about electric vehicles, showcasing their potential for sleekness, efficiency, and mainstream use. In doing so, it inspired other automakers to invest in electric technology. In retrospect, the GM EV1 set the stage for the electric vehicle revolution now sweeping the automotive industry. Lessons learned from the EV1 experience, both technologically and in terms of society's shift toward sustainable transportation, continue to influence modern electric cars. Today, electric vehicles are no longer a niche concept but a growing segment of the automotive market, and the EV1 played an indispensable role in igniting this transformation.www.nodrivinggloves.com#cars #car #collectorcars #oldcars #cartalk #electriccars #ev #hotrod #carhistory #automotivehistory #automobile #thisdayinautomotivehistory #thisdayinhistory #classiccars #onthisday #NaPodPoMo #ev1 #ithappenedtoday #tesla

In this episode of the Igniting Change, Finding Your Fire podcast, Meena Puri explores the transformative journey of emotional healing. She delves into the significance of addressing emotions such as regret, resentment, and forgiveness in this process. Emotions are not just emotions, they are everything that is nonphysical in our being. Made up of emotions, thoughts, beliefs, trauma, experiences past and present – the sum total makes up this field of energy. When this energy is sick, body gets sick. When we don't consciously learn how to navigate and manage our emotional world, our emotions then run our life subconsciously. Emotions are how we navigate our inner and outer world, they are the inner compass guiding us. When we get triggered, feel off, it is nothing to ignore rather to take guidance from. Upcoming emotional healing retreat: Oct. 4th, 5th, 6th. 12-1pm EST on Zoom, free to attend. In episode 78 of "Igniting Change, Finding Your Fire," Meena Puri explores the idea of living from the inside out. Meena encourages listeners to realize that the answers we seek are found within us, and we can only stray from ourselves for so long before we return home. We all must come to the realization that the answers we seek are only found inside. We can only stray from ourselves for so long. Sooner or later, we must return home to ourselves. I can say this with conviction. Being born and raised in a family in India - a place of rituals and norms and the only guide seemed to be what others would say. Keeping quiet was applauded, being a martyr was admired. My journey was to shed all of it. It wasn't easy, but it was so worth it. I often wondered who these other people were only to realize that it was nothing but a mere reflection of our own lack of courage - others were a mere crutch. The joy and success we seek is born out of freeing our soul from the conditioning and programming so we can live a life that is internally driven and not externally imposed. Humanity is at cross roads where the old ways are at odds with the new vision. Our soul will choose light. A new day is dawning! Can you sense that? I had no idea when I created Inner Compass Club, that my vision would expand so much more than what I began with. I started with emotional healing, but it's going to go way beyond that. It's a movement, an affirmation, and a commitment to oneself to live from the inside out. The true compass is within each one of us. Inside the Inner Compass Club Membership, you will find the teachings, meditations and community. New content will be continuously added - whether it is nutrition, lifestyle, relationships, spirituality, evolution and ascension. My vision is to free all of us from the bondage of programming in all areas of our lives. We can either chase or we can find. End the chase! Turn Inward! In episode 77 of the Igniting Change, Finding Your Fire podcast, titled "Trauma and Love," host Meena Puri explores the profound connection between trauma and love. Meena emphasizes that trauma and love are two sides of the same coin. When we have unresolved experiences that we haven't fully processed or metabolized, our longing for love often becomes a chase. We tend to seek love externally, disconnected from the love that resides within ourselves. The unprocessed experiences occupy our subconscious mind and drain our energy, similar to undigested food. However, Meena suggests that by metabolizing our experiences, we can transform them into their highest expression, which is love. Metabolizing involves fully processing and integrating our past experiences, allowing us to release their hold on us and tap into the highest energy of love. Join Meena Puri on this enlightening episode as she explores the intricate relationship between trauma and love, providing valuable insights and guidance on how to reconnect with love within ourselves. In episode 76 of the Igniting Change, Finding Your Fire podcast, titled "FREE Will - is not FREE," host Meena Puri explores the concept of free will and the factors that often hinder us from exercising it fully. Meena highlights the fact that we often forget our inherent ability to make choices and take action in our lives. We can leave a painful relationship, quit a job that no longer serves us, or disengage from conflicts. While this may seem straightforward, many of us find ourselves unable to take these steps. Meena poses the question of why this is the case, suggesting that it may be due to fear of the unknown, lack of courage, or a combination of various factors unique to each individual. Although we possess the freedom to pursue our desires, there is always a price to be paid. Meena emphasizes the importance of understanding what price we are willing to pay and encourages listeners to embark on an exploration of their motivations and reasons behind their choices. It is not about judgment, but rather about gaining insight into our decision-making processes. Meena asserts that what truly matters is not necessarily the choice we make, but the underlying why behind it. Join Meena Puri on this thought-provoking episode as she delves into the complexities of free will and encourages listeners to delve deep into their motivations and desires. In episode 75 of the Igniting Change, Finding Your Fire podcast, titled "Mind Body Connection - It's Not Just a Cliche," podcast host Meena Puri examines the powerful correlation between the mind and body. It's widely accepted that a single thought can create an arousal or physiological response, but what effect do the countless thoughts we have throughout the day have on our physical symptoms and ailments? By exploring the relationship between thoughts and physical sensations, Meena sheds light on the insightful question of what thoughts may have created these physical experiences. As challenging as it may be to navigate our non-physical inner world, Meena emphasizes that this is a meaningful process that her membership program focuses on. In episode 74 of the Igniting Change, Finding Your Fire podcast, titled "Uniting Head and Heart: The Heart is a Smarter Brain," host Meena Puri delves into the internal struggles stemming from the constant battle between the mind and heart. Our minds, egos or mental flow, are wired to operate solely from thinking, analyzing, and seeking external answers. However, the heart represents a deeper knowing, integrating the subtle parts of us that contain wisdom and pivoting from a place of love rather than fear. Meena suggests that the ego is not wrong but needs direction, similar to a toddler. Its role is to keep us moving forward, but the goal is to align our mind with the heart or what she calls "Heart Based Ego." The heart has the capacity to integrate all parts of our being, shifting from living solely through the ego to thriving in a state of whole-being engagement. Meena encourages listeners who are struggling to ask themselves how much of their difficulties come from this internal head-heart battle. She asserts that all our struggles are internal but acknowledges that navigating the inner world is challenging without proper guidance. Engaging experts can serve as a catalyst to facilitate this journey and lead individuals to deeper knowing, from which they can learn to live. Join Meena Puri on this episode to realize the significance of unifying the head and heart in achieving a life of authentic and holistic living. In episode 73 of the Igniting Change, Finding Your Fire podcast, titled "6 Differences in Healing and Talk Therapy," Meena Puri dives into the distinction between deeper healing work and traditional talk therapy. This episode was inspired by a concerned mother who feared her daughter might be retraumatized through therapy, based on past experiences. Meena reassures the mother by explaining her approach to healing. Meena highlights the following differences between healing work and talk therapy: Understanding the Bigger Picture: When discussing the past, the focus is on gaining a deeper understanding, asking significant questions, and recognizing our energetic contributions to our experiences. This shift in perspective directs attention to personal experiences rather than dwelling on external factors. Healing Beliefs, not Just Behaviors: The goal of healing work is not to merely change external behaviors but to address the underlying beliefs that drive those behaviors. By focusing on internal transformation, individuals experience genuine change from within. An Organic Healing Process: Healing does not adhere to a fixed schedule. When we commit to healing ourselves, what needs attention and what we are ready to address naturally emerges. Therapist Consciousness: The level of consciousness of the therapist significantly influences the healing process. Meena emphasizes that her work is not merely a career but a calling, rooted in her own deep inner healing journey. Oneness of the Body and Mind: Healing work recognizes the inseparable connection between the body and the mind. Physical symptoms can be manifestations of unhealed traumas, urging us to pay attention for true healing to take place. Moving Beyond Behavior Management: Healing work goes beyond managing behaviors; it involves deep healing that ultimately removes the need for constant management. This allows individuals to flow with ease and align with their truest nature. Join Meena Puri on this eye-opening episode as she uncovers the distinct features of healing work and its powerful impact in transforming lives. My guest today, Danica Roem, went from fronting a Death Metal band by night while building a career as an accomplished journalist by day, to being the first person to be elected and serve in any U.S. state legislature while openly transgender. When you hear that story, you might think, “wow, that's amazing, but I don't really relate.” Not so fast. When you zoom the lens out, Danica's story is really about the quest to live as the truest expression of yourself, to not stifle or deny who you are, and to find a sense of home for all parts of you within a community. Which is something nearly all of us often struggle with. I know I do. This is why I was so excited to be in conversation with Danica Roem. My chat with Danica takes us back to her teenage years, where she first found her community in (what may sound surprising now, but won't later) metal music. We talk about the struggles of masking the authentic parts of yourself in order to fit in, and how she's been able to use her experiences to relate with people from all different backgrounds on a human level. Danica's new memoir-meets-manifesto, Burn the Page: A True Story of Torching Doubts, Blazing Trails, and Igniting Change, deconstructs the many, sometimes outrageous and deeply isolating and offensive stories her doubters and opponents have thrown at her and shows through brutal honesty how she's turned her identity, values and experiences into her greatest strengths. She brings that same honesty and authenticity to our conversation today, so know that you're in for a real treat.
