He shares his experience of separating his identity from the company he co-founded, Junkie Media, and the personal challenges he faced during that time. Tim also talks about his research process, including conducting interviews with experts and using music as a creative ritual. He acknowledges the presence of self-doubt throughout his writing journey and emphasizes the importance of constantly improving and pushing oneself. The conversation explores the themes of luck and timing, being in tune with trends, and the importance of starting with oneself. It delves into the problems with the current approach to work, such as overwork, disengagement, and apprehensiveness, and the need to fix the broken system. The conversation also discusses the healthier approach to work-life balance among Gen Z and the need for employers to create systems that support work-life balance. It concludes with practical advice for individuals who are dissatisfied with their current work situation and the importance of rebalancing life and work. The creative process involves solving a problem for oneself and then realizing it can also benefit others. Research and interviews with experts can provide valuable insights and inspiration for writing. Music can be used as a creative ritual to set the mood and enhance focus. Self-doubt is a common experience for writers, but it can be channeled into improving the work. Separating one's identity from a company or project can be challenging but also an opportunity for personal growth. Luck and timing play a role in success, but being in tune with trends is also important. Starting with oneself and finding a topic or idea that one genuinely cares about is crucial for long-term success. The current approach to work is broken, with issues such as overwork, disengagement, and apprehensiveness. Gen Z has a healthier approach to work-life balance, prioritizing life outside of work. Employers need to create systems that support work-life balance and prioritize employee well-being. Individuals who are dissatisfied with their work situation can start by rebalancing their life and work, focusing on work less, and improving their mind, body, and relationships.   For more on Tim: https://timduggan.com.au/ For more on Dan: www.brophy.world  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The world “hates ads”, reckons Avid Collective boss Luke Spano. But high dwell times and engagement rates suggest they like native content. Marketers know this, but native content has been fragmented and highly manual, akin to insertion orders pre-programmatic. With little standardisation and patchy reporting metrics it couldn't scale. While the likes of Taboola and Outbrain have hooked major publishers, they have “dirtied” native content's reputation, per Spano. He suggests they are largely just repurposed ads. Avid Collective is bidding to fix all that. Locally, the firm has landed deals with the likes of Destination Gold Coast and ANZ-owned Cashrewards working with publishers from The Guardian and The Daily Mail through to Urban List and The Betoota Advocate as part of a 140-strong publisher network and platform that Spano claims reaches 18 million Australians, from students to boomers. It's moving the needle for brands, says Spano, because those publishers along with Avid's strategists create bespoke content they know will land with their audiences, not filler. Digital Publishers Alliance chair Tim Duggan spent years explaining native to marketers after founding Junkee. Avid's platform would have cut dead time. But some of the 55 publishers in his alliance are piling in – eyeing major upside from native content over the next decade as marketers seek cost-efficient growth and greater media diversity as part of ESG mandates. Agencies are buying-in, per Spano, driving 70 per cent of spend on the platform. He's aiming for 80-90 per cent by next year. After that Avid Collective aims to go global.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Today's guest is Paul Dunn, a 4-time TEDx speaker, master storyteller and one of the most well-read people I know!   He is a Senior Fellow in one of the World's Leading Think Tanks and consults to and mentors leading-edge businesses around the world.   He was honoured as a Social Innovation Fellow in his new home of Singapore; something he shares with film-star and philanthropist Jet Li and Walmart Chairman, Rob Walton.   He was one of the first 10 people in Hewlett Packard in Australia. He then created one of Australia's first computer companies and then The Results Corporation where he helped develop and grow 23,000 small and medium scale business enterprises.    His programs are used by an estimated 226,000 companies around the world and he continues to push the boundaries. He featured in Forbes Magazine alongside Sir Richard Branson in a global piece on ‘disrupters' in business.   He is the co-founder of B1G1: Business for Good, the history-making Global Giving Initiative that's already enabled businesses to create over 281 Million giving impacts globally.   Paul shares an incredible story about something that happened involving him after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. It precipitated his meeting with Masami Sato that led to them co-founding B1G1, but it profoundly shifted his thinking on what he believed was the secret to success in business. He then tells the story of Masami Sato, who he was mentoring, sharing the idea that directly led to B1G1 starting, which has now led to a global movement that has created over 281 million impacts (as at May 2022). We talk about the idea of “possibilities” and Paul shares an insight from the book, Teeming, by Dr Woolley-Barker.  One of the major learning points is that we need to understand that nature does not solve problems. Nature always looks for potential. An idea that perhaps humans can learn from. He shares his thinking on the two types of companies that exist: standard companies and standout companies, through the lens of legacy Another book he references is Cult Status by Tim Duggan and the idea that of seven things leaders can work on to gain cult status, number 1 is to define the impact you want to have. And define it in terms of the number of lives that you will touch. Paul shares a rousing quote from Steve Jobs about how powerful the storyteller is. It's a quote that makes you really think about the potency of storytelling for generations to come. For those who don't know B1G1, Paul explains how it works and the profound impact it creates for everyone involved.   Get in touch with Paul... https://www.linkedin.com/in/paulb1g1/ https://b1g1.com

The good news is that anyone can learn to master the art of creativity to turn good ideas into brilliant ones. That's what this book is about: those killer ideas that have a positive impact on many people, with near-infinite winners. The type you hear about and think, ‘Damn, I wish I'd thought of that!' Tim Duggan, the co-founder of Junkee Media, will show you how to identify and generate your own ideas with big potential, and then how to refine and bring them to life. Learn from the creative minds behind some of the most innovative ideas out there, like Canva, KeepCup, Movember, Linktree, B Corps, Zero Co and more. Source: https://timduggan.com.au/book/killer-thinking/ About the author Tim Duggan is an author, advisor and optimist who firmly believes in the power of business to do good. He has co-founded several digital media ventures, most notably Junkee Media, the leading digital publisher for young Australians, which was acquired by ASX-listed oOh!media His first book, ‘Cult Status: How To Build A Business People Adore', was named the Best Entrepreneurship and Small Business Book at the 2021 Australian Business Book Awards. His second book on creativity in the workplace, Killer Thinking, is out now. He's also currently the Chairman of the Digital Publishers Alliance, a group representing over 100 titles from the leading independent publishers in the country, as well as working with a range of businesses that he's passionate about. Source: https://timduggan.com.au/about/ Big idea #1 — The best ideas are killer Tim's model for what makes an idea better than good and better than great is the acronym KILLER, which stands for; Kind — having a net-good effect on the world Impactful — impacting a large number of people Loved — people love you Lasting — not just a trend, has longevity Easy — people understand what you do Repeatable — create their own momentum These are about the idea, being killer, but it's also about the execution; the idea alone is not enough, the execution has to be killer as well.  Ideas that go beyond good and great and become killer ideas have an infinite amount of upsides, and none or very, few downsides. Tim talks about putting a winners and losers lens over your ideas and using the losers, or the potential losers, as a result of your idea as a trigger to stretch your idea further and design downsides out of it. Nobody should lose as a result of your idea coming to life. It's important to note that the creative thinking for a create for a killer idea exists within everyone. You might just not have had a chance to show it just yet, but by using some of the techniques in the book and your own creativity, you can absolutely come up with your own killer ideas yourself. Big idea #2 — The eight steps to a killer idea Now that we know a killer idea is and what it looks like, you might want to know how to come up with one or refine your ideas into one yourself. There's eight steps to this, which Tim has put into a model that looks like a little key hole, and you start the bottom with step number one and work your way up. Be your problem's therapist: take in information, absorbing it, and starting to think about what is the real problem, looking at it from different perspectives, and really understand the problem. Fit your own mask first: look after yourself and your own creativity, by making sure you've created the space to be creative by doing your own individual ideation. Plus each other's ideas: now you get to bring other people into the process, and make this into a generative and iterative approach where you add to each other's ideas, rather than shooting them down. Sit with it: let the ideas breathe, give them a bit of space to let them come to life and ferment in the way that they need to. Apply the right filter: come up with the design principles or the elements that you need to make sure your idea is feasible, and making sure it meets the criteria that is required in order for the idea to be killer and to work. Stretch it out: take your idea and then stretch it even further to design out any downsides. Launch into a rising tide: know what else is happening in the zeitgeists in the world, what trends exist that you might be able to leverage and where you can benefit from other momentum. Listen with open ears: your ideas won't exist in a vacuum once they're out in the world, so how do you take the feedback and experiences of your end users to build your idea even further. Big idea #3 — Space, inputs, time Killer ideas don't appear fully formed. As Tim says in the book, we need to get better at nurturing them into existence and make sure that we have the space, the inputs, and the time in order to make our idea even better. Giving an idea space might look like physical space for it to float around and ferment. You might plan to go on a boring long drive, do some chores, or go out on a hike and immerse your idea in the physical space of nature to grow. Some ideas need fertilisation along with the fermentation of space. You can fertilise your ideas through inputs such as conversations, reading about adjacent or abstract ideas, listening to music, or even peeling a piece of fruit. The important thing here is to think about where are those inputs coming from, and how might they help your idea. Finally, time; boredom, sleep, and purposeful thinking time are the key ingredients to giving yourself the time to think about the idea in a deeper way. Schedule boredom into your days and weeks, and definitely make sure all of your ideas get slept on. Let's connect LinkedIn Instagram  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Kia ora koutou,In this week's podcast I am speaking with journalist, entrepreneur and author Tim Duggan. Today just happens to be the day he is launching his new book, Killer Thinking.I won't summarise the book's thesis, but I will let you know that I enjoyed reading it, and that it is full of information to challenge you and help take your idea (which he defines as a solution to some problem) from ok to awesome. Or in Tim's parlance, KILLER.As an experiment, I am cutting and pasting below the questions that I planned out for Tim before the interview. I always make a list of questions, both for myself and to give the interviewee time to prepare themselves, and I never stick to it. It's there for when I need to get the conversation back on track, or to remind myself of something I really wanted to know.Showing your handInterestingly, when I wrote daily news years ago I rarely prepared questions, and certainly never shared them with interviewees beforehand. To do so would have forewarned and forearmed the subjects, a breach of news protocol. Like showing your copy to people before publishing, god forbid.I have greater distance from that news culture now, and I recognise that treating people as “sacks of information” to be plundered is a limited and damaging worldview. Naturally, there are situations where you cannot show your hand. But a lot of times you can. You just have to remember that almost no one likes hearing their voice on tape, or seeing their spoken words as text. I think that's because truth makes people vulnerable. I empathise now. I always feel like I am walking a tightrope when I am interviewed by someone else.Apologies for the delay between postings, I've been doing some fascinating work for a number of organisations. I'll ask you to take that on trust for now!HalQuestions for Tim* Tim - could you say your name and introduce yourself?* You started with Cult Status, and now you've written Killer Thinking - how do the books differ? Are you advancing ideas?* Was this book easier to write or was it like your second album?* The book is about KILLER ideas - which means Kind, impactful, loved (the cult status part), lasting, easy, and repeatable.* I was particularly taken by the easy bit - you stress a couple of times that ideas should be simple and able to be explained to a kid. Why is it that good solutions are simple solutions?* I'd like to apply your eight-step framework to some of the problems that news faces globally and in Australia and NZ.* Say we are talking about the inability of commercial markets to meet the needs of public interest journalism in regional areas.* Your first step is to be your problem's therapist. I think my problem might be the worst client ever .... someone I don't want to treat ... where should I start?* Do you think "launching into a rising tide" might be the hardest thing with news? The tide seems to have been out for a long time. Is it every coming back in?* You're a very positive person - the book is energetic and useful. You've made it as useful as possible. There is one bit where you take down an idea - the idea of using brainstorm sessions at work. I came across the HIPPO idea - can you explain that?* Have you been a HIPPO? (I know I have)* I have noticed that ideas are thick on the ground, but well-executed ideas working in real life less so. Why is this?* What is is the number 1 mistake people make in trying to bring their ideas to life?* You recommend becoming bored. Tell me more about that.* Your background is as an entrepreneur, you co-founded, built up and then sold Junkee, and you started as a music journalist writing for Rolling Stone. In the book you mention that you had to write very short music reviews - what did that teach you?* You wrote the book in a campervan with Ben travelling around Australia - during COVID? (And made a beautiful 42 second video!)* So where are you heading? What's next for you? More ideas about ideas? Are you building a new business? This is a public episode. How can you turn the impact you hope to have into an actionable strategy that truly influences your customers in a valuable way?  Tim Duggan is a Sydney based author and new media entrepreneur, as well as a firm believer in using the power of business for good. Tim Duggan is a new media entrepreneur who has co-founded several digital media ventures, most notably Junkee Media, the leading digital publisher for young Australians. Tim has created many award-winning media titles including Junkee, Punkee, Same Same and AWOL and is currently Editor-at-Large after selling the company to oOh!media in 2016.Tim has recently returned to his writing roots with the release of a highly-acclaimed book. Cult Status is an investigation into how to build businesses people adore, filled with insight from years spent at the coalface of his own companies and experience of working closely with leading global brands like Netflix, American Express and Qantas. A follow up, Killer Thinking, is set for release in 2022.  In this episode of The Remarkable Project Tim talks about the importance of identifying impact that, although likely born of the boardroom, can consistently unlock real benefit for customers. He goes on to explain why getting the intent of that impact just right, and working hard to stay accountable to it, are both great ways to build strong, connected communities in and around a brand or business.Takeaway points: Well-crafted impact statements which put consumer ahead of company can provide motivation, clarity, fulfilment and direction across all levels of an organisation. However, unless you have people at the top who recognise the positive value their actions can have on real people's lives, the potential for true change may go unrealised. In a society that values success by how much you sell a company for or how big your salary is, it's clear we need a mindset shift – the end goal should be to maximise the number of people we can positively impact. Really purposeful companies who are also increasingly profitable and powerful, such as Airbnb, Who Gives a Crap and Allbirds, prove the days of thinking it's either profit OR purpose are clearly over – it can be both. Businesses and individuals all have a set of values that when shared have the capacity to start and sustain communities. There are many mediums, online and off, that can act as tools to help nurture these connected groups, including Slack channels, Instagram comment threads, Zoom groups, email comms and real-world events. However, the key is understanding that their role is to amplify the energy of a community's core reason for being, not to offer an alternative alter.  One of the ultimate ways to mobilise a strong community is to provide them with the opportunity to invest in the business. By putting their own hard-earned money, time or expertise into actively supporting ongoing success, they are confirming exceptional belief in what's being done and why. Identifying hyper-engaged advocates through this process can make it easier to move forward with the confidence that comes from knowing where your ongoing interactions, incentives and inspiration will be most deserved, and yield the most business benefit to boot. Resources Mentioned:Cult Status  by Tim Duggan: www.cultstatus.com  Get connected with Tim:Learn about his books and read his blog at: https://cultstatus.com Check out The Impact Statement Masterclass: https://impactstatementmasterclass.thinkific.comFollow him on Twitter: https://twitter.com/timduggan

In our chat, we cover:  The simple email that started his first business (and how we can all learn from what he did) The finance disaster that had him and his team talking to administrators… and how they saved the business His smart AF strategy for staying ahead of the curve, so that it seemed like his business “came from the future” The critical question he and his leadership team asked every 12 months of his time at Junkee to help them disrupt their own business How to give team members autonomy, but still stay in control  His crazy experience of taking himself to a deserted island, armed with just a notebook, pen and medical reference book - and what the experience taught him How he managed to write Cult Status while also running Junkee  The simple reframe that helped him keep moving forward with the book, even when creative flow felt in short supply Why he's amazed that any businesses get sold His advice for anyone thinking about selling their business The three areas that great entrepreneurs should NOT be spending their time on in their businesses Why leaving his ego at the door has been behind many of his most successful business moves I loved this conversation with Tim - he's so honest and grounded, and also generous with sharing his fuck-ups as well as his wins. You can find Tim and buy Cult Status on his website (cultstatus.com) and Instagram (@tim_duggan).   Check out my Instagram (@lorraineremarks) this week for details on how to win one of two signed copies of Tim's book! The second boot from season 1 Tim Duggan was a great character and perhaps one of the most underrated characters Australian Survivor has ever produced and he remains sadly one of only two Australian Survivor players to have passed away. In this special tribute episode to Tim, we chat with his wife Jennie about just how amazing of a person he was and why he was perfectly suited for Survivor. We also learn just how he went about getting on the show and how it was done in a unique way, as well as learn why he felt slightly hard done by after being voted out and why his time on Survivor stayed with him for a while after the show had finished. We are also joined by a very special guest during the interview which adds a whole extra dynamic to a potential future legacy for the Duggan name in the Australian Survivor history books.

Appeasement: Chamberlain, Hitler, Churchill and the Road to War(Tim Duggan Books, 2019) is a groundbreaking history of the disastrous years of indecision, failed diplomacy and parliamentary infighting that help to make Hitler's domination of Europe possible. Drawing on the available archival research, Oxford graduate, professional writer and one-time Channel 4 news journalist, Tim Bouverie has created a highly interesting portrait of the ministers, aristocrats, and amateur diplomats who, through their actions and inaction, shaped their country's policy and determined the fate of Europe. Among other historical figures who appear in this tale are Hitler, Churchill, Chamberlain, Eden and Baldwin. Beginning with the advent of Hitler in 1933, we embark on a fascinating journey from the early days of the Third Reich to the beaches of Dunkirk and the downfall of Chamberlain's premiership. Bouverie takes us not only into the backrooms of Parliament and 10 Downing Street but also into the drawing rooms and dining clubs of imperial Britain, where Hitler enjoyed support among the ruling class and even some members of the royal family. Both sweeping and detail laden, Tim Bouverie provides both the first-time reader of this historical tale and the more experienced one, with a highly interesting and involved narrative of one of the most important periods in world history. Charles Coutinho has a doctorate in history from New York University. Where he studied with Tony Judt, Stewart Stehlin and McGeorge Bundy. His Ph.
