1991.It was the first palindromic year since 1881, and to be honest I'm not really up on the hits of that particular Victorian number. (Newsflash: Bruckner's 6th Symphony was pretty hot that year)Fast forward to the 2nd year of the ‘nineties' as we called it, and there are plenty of other newsflashes abound. War in the Gulf dominated the spring (news and charts, but more of that later), Eastern Europe was reshaping, and on TV it was either Springfield or a cup of damn fine coffee. So what was taking up the prime positions on the nation's favourite compilation series in March 1991?Well, you actually may have been wondering what year it actually was. 1982? 1987? 1965? 1970? They were all here (you know which songs were which, don't you? Of course you do.)Yes pop fans, TV, film, and TV films amongst other factors (chewing gum, jeans, Patrick Swayze) were all leaving quite a mark on the topper most region of the charts. However fear not! The story of NOW, That's What I Call Music 19 is much, much more - resplendent in it's purple and yellow (ahem!) gatefold cover. The biggest number of tracks to date (34!), encompassing the blossoming decade's many exciting genres (and Stevie B).And so we throw open the doors and welcome (amongst others) The KLF broadcasting loud and proud on Radio Freedom, Massive (yes, no Attack during this war period) providing a bona fide Unfinished classic, Kylie being totally imperial, Seal being totally everything and Chris Rea being like a pub (we believe) and providing youngsters up and down the country with the perfect CD for Dad this Christmas.Elsewhere there were big ballads (Oleta and long haired ‘serious' Rick), big dance (The Source and Nomad) big pop (Belinda, her wonderful hair and INXS) and a majestic (if not entirely singable) ending from Steve Howe (and Queen). And yes, alright, seeing as you ask the totally amazing Banderas. One hit wonder or not? You decide. And indeed our guest does! Into the PopVoid blogger (he says it's coming BACK, possibly) and all round Scots pop super fan Niall McMurray steers us expertly and enthusiastically across the hits, headlines (and Stevie B) from volume 1991. He also provides some great stories about growing up and branching out as a student in Glasgow (I was there too!), suggests some amazing (and they are AMAZING) missing tracks and we both, quite frankly, gush justifiably about ABBA Voyage. All of this and much more (it says in my notes) - and find out why EMF, Hale and Pace and probably several others won't be returning our calls anytime soon. 1991 - Awesome! (As a few other similar looking compilations told us.) Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Being successful is the goal of most people. We are influenced very early in life to aim for success and to never fail if possible. We can make the goal to be successful most important and allow it to control our lives in a negative way. We can attach to being successful and begin to define ourselves and our self worth by how successful we are. It isn't a healthy happy way to live. It can cause us to feel unworthy of self love and the love and acceptance of others unless we are looked at as successful and if we fail we define ourselves as failures and not good enough. It is said that there are no failures, only outcome. We are meant to find out by taking actions and learn and grow from them with no identification and attachment. Learn how to be free from the success/failure paradigm with Coach Kathleen and Dr. Monica and how to use helpful and effective life coaching practices and techniques to create the ability to completely love and accept yourself just as you are. www.kathleenmartincoaching.com www.monicabennett.biz www.lifecoachradio.net www.facebook.com/lifecoachpodcast

In the early '90s, there was no hotter Australian pop music label than Westside Records, who pounced on Radio Freedom, a project fronted by Paul Snashall. Fresh off an appearance on talent show Star Search, the singer otherwise known as Pehl put together a track called "I Can Feel It", an infectious mix of dance, Latin and hip-hop that stormed the ARIA top 10. In our interview with Paul, he reveals all the behind-the-scenes details of what inspired that tune, how the song and his profile exploded (sometimes with disastrous consequences), and his lucrative deal with Westside. Paul talks us through the follow-ups to "I Can Feel It", including soul track "Proove", Bob Marley cover "Is This Love" and the band's final single "Edge Of The World (Love Storm)", detailing the reasons behind Radio Freedom's evolving sound and the record company politics at play. Label issues would also have a huge impact on what could've been the band's big international break, with their support slot for Elton John cut short — a turn of events that, together with constant delays on their debut album, hastened Paul's disillusion with Radio Freedom.

On this episode of History of the '90s, host Kathy Kenzora is looking at some aspects of the anti-apartheid struggle that you might not know; pirate radio and protest songs. Pirate radio was a weapon used by the African National Congress to inspire black South Africans and counter propaganda and misinformation by the apartheid government.  While protest songs performed by western musicians played a pivotal role in raising awareness in the rest of the world about the injustices in South Africa. Pirate radio and protest songs inside and outside South Africa helped put pressure on the South African government and help end apartheid. This led to the release of Nelson Mandela from a prison in Cape Town, South Africa is one of the most memorable events of the 1990s.  We all remember the day he walked arm and arm with his wife and then raised a fist in victory after surviving 27 years behind bars. Following Mandela’s release, apartheid was dismantled, and he became the first democratically elected President in a free South Africa. It had been a long walk to freedom for Mandela and a long fight by all South Africans to end apartheid. It was difficult sourcing audio from South Asia back in 1983. Tape recordings of radio stations were rare and phone lines to just about anywhere were crackly. We started with some frequency changes to our English transmissions. The shortwave equipment news is about the Sony ICF7600D. The new receiver has keypad tuning. Pete Myers has new RF-799 from Panasonic. There a clandestine station in Kabul. Gaither Stewart has news about Radio Free Afghanistan. Radio Nepal has two new transmitters, a gift from Japan. Mohini Shephard has been visiting the station. Pete Myers reports on the National Youth Association in Bhutan using recordings from Adrian Peterson in Poona. ORF Vienna has a Master Morse course. We also talked to Finn Krone, producer of AWR World DX News on 9670. Radio Freedom, the Voice of The Sri Lankan people. Finn thinks it comes from Germany. There is news from Cambodia and Thailand as well. The final report is about the radio battles going on in Andorra. Robbert Bosschart reports from Madrid.

We were in the studio with Andrew Shearer, owner of Royal Broadcasting, parent company to The River 95.3 & Sports Radio AM 1450 to talk about the Local Radio Freedom Act and it's impact on community radio stations such as ours. The bipartisan resolution opposes "any new performance fee, tax, royalty, or other charge" on local broadcast radio stations. You can view the House version on their website: https://www.congress.gov/bill/115th-congress/house-concurrent-resolution/13/text , or click here to download the pdf version: BILLS-115hconres13ih As of the airing of this show, Congressman Goodlatte has not shown support for this bill. To voice your support to Congressman Goodlatte, please visit his website: https://goodlatte.house.gov/ In the second segment of the show, we introduced you to the newest members of our staff: Meg Clowser and Jimmy Bowman. We're excited to have them on our sales team and know they're excited to work with our local businesses to increase their traffic through on-air, digital & social media marketing options.

More time travel, this time 32 years!. Welshman Tony Jones, who lived in South America at the time of this recording, later went on to help with editing Passport to World Band Radio. He made a series of talks about broadcasting in several countries in Latin America. We didn't have much in the way of recordings to illustrate the piece. You can see the restrictions 12 years before the we had access to the Internets. This programme also includes the voice of John Campbell explaining the Radio Beauvais hoax. He also talks about the tradition of Sunday morning pirates and the Radio Freedom broadcasts towards apartheid South Africa.

This week most of the programme focussed on a profile of the new South African external service, Channel Africa. Lebona Mosia was its first director and he visited Hilversum in April 1996 to discuss possible cooperation. He had worked as a broadcaster on the anti-apartheid clandestine station Radio Freedom which beamed programmes into the country from neighbouring Zambia and Madagascar. Following the change of government, Radio RSA was renamed Channel Africa and went through a major period of change, having much less money than before. The programme also includes an interview with the then boss of Sentech, Neil Smuts, who explained that the Meyerton shortwave centre was being prepared for jamming operations when the regime collapsed.
