This interview is with an awesome Appalachian from Prestonsburg, Kentucky by the name of James Stiltner. In Eastern Kentucky, lots of folks have trail horses, show horses, and the occasional draft horse or mule however, James is a professional driver/trainer in harness racing! The Red Mile is a harness track in Lexington, but there is now a track in Corbin, Kentucky, making it easier for South East Ky, Tennessee, and Virginia to enjoy a day at the track and offer another attraction to our part of the world. James was raised in a good home, he was a well behaved child, but always had a need for speed. When he was 12 years old he competed against grown men in speed classes at the World horse shows, rode motocross, and now drives Standard bred horses in the harness races. There is a lot you can learn about harness racing in this episode and you will also hear several cool things Mr. Stiltner has got to experience. We Thank God for all his kindness and mercy! Lexington..is the second largest city in Kentucky...and the 60th largest city in the United States. Known as the "Horse Capital of the World", it is the heart of the state's Bluegrass region with many notable locations.. Like the Kentucky Horse park, The Red Mile, the University of Kentucky, and Transylvania University, with its Monroe Moosnick Museum, which was featured in episode two of Southern Oddities. But while the blue bloods of Kentucky want you to associate their state with thoroughbred race horses, bourbon, or even Abraham Lincoln, one rather famous taxidermized bear has become a state icon. Housed at the brick and mortar store, the Kentucky for Kentucky Fun Mall, as the locals call him...Cocaine Bear...aka Pablo Escobear. The story behind this stuffed bear is quite interesting and fantastical, and I'm sure your asking yourself why is this stuffed black bear named Cocaine Bear? As you are about to find out, the story of Cocaine Bear is so exciting it could of easily stepped off the pages of a Hollywood script, but in order to tell it we will have to go back to the 1970s and 80s, during the height of cocaine.[FOLLOW ON SOCIAL MEDIA & MORE]TWITTER: www.twitter.com/SouthernOddPodINSTAGRAM: www.instagram.com/SouthernOddPodJARED'S TWITTER: www.twitter.com/jared_ordisJARED'S INSTAGRAM: www.instagram.com/jared.ordisORDIS STUDIOS PODCAST NETWORK & WEBSITE: www.ordisstudios.com[ADDITONAL INFORMATION]Questions or Business Inquiry, Email Us @ ordisstudios@gmail.comResearched was used for this episode of Southern Oddities, and we couldn't have made it possible without the journalism and dedication from these awesome sources of information: Roadside America "Story 50220" KY Forky "Cocaine Bear" Outdoor Hub "Pablo Escobear Bizarre Story of Kentuckys Cocaine Bear" NY Times "Cocaine and Dead Bear" Kentucky "Local News Article 91223657" The Vintage News "Cocaine Bear" Today I Found Out "Amazing Tale Kentucky Folk Hero Pablo Escobear Cocaine Bear" Grunge "The Incredible Story of Kentucky's Cocaine Bear" Atlas Obscura "Gather Round for the Ballad of Cocaine Bear" Wikipedia "Lexington Kentucky""Southern Oddities" is created & produced by Jared Ordis, an Ordis Studios production. In this week's episode, we recap the Red Mile and catch up with my long-time friend, Danny Eslick. I've had the pleasure of watching this guy race since he was four years old. We talked through his first days of racing, his Daytona 200 wins, his 2018 racing seasons across road racing and flat track, and much more.
While most of us were sipping a cocktail preparing to watch the fastest two minutes in sports, Mike Maloney was holding a ticket, which in two minutes could be worth well over $200,000. The year was 2007 and Mike was gathered with close friends and relatives in a private room within Keeneland, 75 miles down the road from Churchill Downs. The bell rang, the gates swung open and Street Sense broke on the inside taking home the first leg of the famous Triple Crown at 9/2. You’ll have to read the book to learn how that day played out for Mike, which is the opening chapter of his incredible page turner, Betting with an Edge, available through the DRF store HERE. While the book spends many chapters knee deep in the science and art behind handicapping, there are countless stories that had me on the edge of my seat and making this one of my truly ‘must reads’ for 2018. Mike is a born and raised Kentucky boy with roots going back many generations. His first experience within the horse playing world came through his father, who Mike describes as being a ‘fantastic handicapper’ but to his detriment an ‘overly aggressive bettor.’ Having been a professional horse player for the last 18 years, Mike clearly has been able to strike a balance between the two tenants, which has resulted in not only a professional career but a private office within the confines of Red Mile in Lexington, complete with a semi-private bet taker. Mike Maloney is regarded as one of the world’s elite horse players and has the stories to back this up. Whether it was a busted day with his father, sitting in a pickup truck, stuck in a parking snafu outside of Churchill on Derby day or nailing his first big ticket as the single holder of a $75,000 pick 6 in the early 80’s, this podcast is a must listen and the book is a must read. Enjoy!
