Conoscete i vitigni autoctoni?
New York-based wine historian Ron Merlino joins Hannah once again to explore some of the music and wines associated with 18th-century Venice during Carnevale season, with a particular focus on the operas of Vivaldi - himself something of a wine connoisseur. Hannah will be tasting three red wine varieties - a Marzemino, a Refosco and an Amarone.
Pause for a second and reflect upon what it must take to be David Byrne's musical director. No pressure. For percussionist Mauro Refosco, it's a gig. A great one, for sure. And he takes it, like he does everything else, in steady rhythm. A Brazilian-born, classically trained drummer, Refosco has been working with Byrne off and on for nearly 30 years. And as “American Utopia” enters the final stage of its Broadway run, we discuss the intricacies of putting on such a dynamic show—wirelessly. We get into his background and his work with Byrne. And we talk a little about Brazilian music and politics. Just a little. We also discuss his beautiful hair. Lidl brings us an interesting and wide variety of wine styles. At times the selection available might be seasonal or themed. To help us through the eclectic nature of wine specials, grape types and areas of origin Lidl employs the services of a Master of Wine, Richard Bampfield to help us. To help us even further Lidl has a (flattering) photo of Richard beside each of its wine sections. In this podcast we chat with Richard about Lidl, his 100 point Scores and the current selection of summer wine styles available at Lidl. We begin with the Gavi at €9.99 mention the Sparkling Ribolla Gialla €16.99 and along the way find time for Refosco, Rias Baixas, Rueda, Toro and many, many others. I concentrate in this podcast (mainly!) on Iberian and Italian styles but you will also find over the course of summer 2020 a selection available from both New Zealand and South America. As with most of my chat podcasts we manage here to drift across Champagne, Cava, South Africa, Portugal - and beyond. As we said at the beginning Lidl brings us an interesting and wide variety of wine styles. Enjoy. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- While all restaurants in Ireland are closed right now they WILL open again. We all hope that this is soon. We should remember that many of these, including the wonderful Monty's of Kathmandu, are family businesses. They are often small and brilliant and when they do reopen they will need our support more than ever. Keep Safe and Keep well. Kevin Ecock's WinePod is brought to us with the assistance of the Santa Rita Wine Room at Monty's of Kathmandu - an excellent place to host your next event or celebration. Contact Shiva at 01 -6704911 or HERE at the Santa Rita Wine Room web page.

Jodi Refosco has built her Taylor-Made Deep Creek Vacations into a veritable empire in Deep Creek Maryland, but it wasn’t an easy start. She grew up with vacation rentals as the family business, but restarted in the depths of the financial crisis with a single property. From paying cleaning staff by taking on late night snow-plow work to dealing with competitors, owners, and guests - Jodi has invaluable knowledge to share about every facet of the vacation rental business. More recently, she has begun to do this through her work with VRMA, and now at the 2019 VRMA event, I got a chance to sit down with her and capture her story for this podcast.

Giampaolo Venica works with his family at the Venica winery, in the Friuli region of Italy. Giampaolo Venica describes the Friuli as a region that has changed significantly in recent decades, and which is still in flux today. Ivan Rapuzzi works at the winery of his family, Ronchi di Cialla, in the Friuli region of Italy. Also in this episode, Erin Scala recounts the history of the Friuli zone.
Sandi Skerk produces about 24,000 bottles annually, about 420 cases of each wine. All of his vineyards are farmed organically. Many of them are located directly in front of his house though he has a few that are a bit further away. His main plantings are of Vitovska, Malvasia and Terrano with smaller quantities of Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon and others. The Terrano grape gets its name from Terra Rossa after the iron-rich, red soil that is found in the area. Terrano, compared to its only slightly better known sibling, Refosco, has a firmer structure and crisper profile along with a stony, ferrous and mineral quality. This program has been sponsored by Fairway Market. Today’s music provided by Space Ghost. “Today I am no longer an engineer, I am a winemaker. But the way of thinking and the appreciation have stayed with me.” [24:40] Sandi Skerk on In The Drink
