We are excited to host Richard Grossman on this episode of the mangu.tv podcast series. In part caused by an early childhood trauma, Dr. Richard Grossman has been dedicated to healing since an early age. His spiritual search also started early. By age 15, he had concluded that his only reason to be alive was to help others out of their suffering. To aid this goal, he became a Doctor of Oriental Medicine in 1983. During this time, he was introduced to the world of plant medicines, especially Ayahuasca. Now, his work is a unique combination of traditional Amazonian shamanism, deep energetic healing, and sound healing. His soon-to-be-published book, The Medicine of Your Life, explores this journey in depth. He is also exploring the healing power of visual images with the use of AI. Richard speaks about his upbringing and his fascination with plant medicine. He shares the impact of losing his uncle at a young age, his struggles to comprehend death, and the conclusion to spend his life helping people to heal. He speaks about his first experiences with plant medicines such as mushrooms and peyote, and how plants accelerated his growth and led to his interest and life's work with acupuncture and Ayahuasca. Giancarlo and Richard discuss consciousness, the mind, plant medicine, technology and mystical experiences, as well as the power of plant medicine to support communities. Richard shares his intention to continue working with medicine to heal religious and social divides.
Skadden partners Richard Grossman and Demetrius Warrick discuss expanded board settlements, M&A activism, short seller attacks and spinoff, startup activists.
Dr. Richard Grossman, a recently retired OBGYN, discusses abortion and community on this episode of the Western Friend Podcast. Engel & Cabrera Present Boroughs & 'Burbs, the Real Estate Review
Welcome back to New York for episode #66 of Boroughs & Burbs. This week is a very special show. We have the NYC-based Presidents of two real estate brokerages that are in some ways similar, and yet couldn't be more different. We have Richard Ferrari, the President of Douglas Elliman, which has been in existence since 1911 and has over 7,000 agents in 113 offices across the country. The most significant recent change for Elliman is that this famous New York firm went public with a mandate to expand from its New York roots into luxury markets across the U.S. After spending 15 years at Elliman earlier in his career Richard Ferrari is back at the firm in charge of New York and New England with the mandate to grow, grow, grow. We have Richard Grossman, the President of Avenue 8. I met Richard Grossman when he was President of Halstead, Manhattan and he appeared on Boroughs & Burbs on Episode 11, "High Style" where we talked design. But, Richard knows the business of big brokerage in the Big Apple. In his new role, as President of Brokerage for a California-based, technology-savvy, venture-backed new brokerage called Avenue 8, Richard is also charged with growing the business, but with a different emphasis and for a firm with different skills and assets. Inman writes, "Avenue 8 is the rising star among modern brokerages. Their easy-to-use, mobile-first technology platform for agents is designed to help agents focus on what they really need to focus on — their clients." We want to hear more about this approach to the business. But, its not enough to grow a brokerage. I want to know how to grow my personal business and so do most of us out there. We have much to learn from the experience of these two men. This business is changing, consolidating and evolving. Every day we are told that if we don't change with it we'll be left behind. How does it make you feel that Forbes is still asking "In the Future of Real Estate, Will Agents Still Play a Role?" And yet Zillow Offers blew up last year. Redfin shut down iBuying. And more recently Opendoor lost much more money than Zillow Offers ever did. Is this redemption? Is relationship-selling and trust making a comeback. Or, are we marching inevitably to a future where the agent plays a diminishing role? I want to ask these men to share their experiences and their wisdom about where the business is going and how to succeed in it.

Engel & Cabrera Present Boroughs & 'Burbs, the Real Estate Review
The Value of High Style The Value of High Style is where we talk to a top designer and a top art collector, two men who make their living knowing the difference between good and great, as we try and understand the relationship of great design with real estate. John Barman has been honored as one of the AD100 by Architectural Digest, one of “The City's Best 100 Architects and Designers” by New York Magazine, and his work has been featured in the New York Times, Esquire, Interior Design, Traditional Home, and W, among other publications. His renowned clientele includes Wynton Marsalis, George Stephanopoulos and Alexandra Wentworth, Leonard and Allison Stern, Bryant Gumbel, Stone Phillips, Neil Simon, and Larry Silverstein. Barman was born and raised in New York City, and graduated from the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania before turning to interior design and founding his eponymous firm. Our second guest, Richard Grossman, is best known as the President of Brown Harris Stevens where he manages all of the regional offices. What most people don't know about Richard is that he is a collector and expert in the subjects of midcentury modern architecture, contemporary and midcentury modern furniture and contemporary art at the very highest levels. We've all heard of the mythical Ferrari in the barn stories. Richard lives that myth. He and his husband Adam discovered a long- abandoned and crumbling apartment in the famed midcentury-modern Butterfield House, purchased it and undertook an extensive 2-year restoration. He has promised to give us a glimpse of the apartment during the show. What I want to know from Richard is where is the line between doing it for the passion versus making a wise investment? What is the value of a name brand architect or a name-brand designer? How has that changed? We want to understand Richard's process of choosing architects and designers, what went right, and what can we learn from his experience. Lastly, I want to point out a recent story in the Wall Street Journal that quotes Richard entitled, Custom Art is Helping High-End Homeowners Paint a Clearer Picture where he is quoted as saying, “Art by a well-known artist can also lend a cachet to the property, which is particularly important in higher-end listings . . . Walking into a home with high ceilings and a 9-foot high Christopher Wool painting in the foyer is very dramatic—and it certainly says someone successful lives here. That statement resonates with high-end buyers,” said Mr. Grossman.

We’re headed back down under this week with Australian group Hoodoo Gurus and their third album, Blow Your Cool! The Gurus formed Sydney in 1981 under songwriter, guitarist, and lead singer Dave Faulkner. The group was fleshed out by Richard Grossman on bass, Mark Kingmill on drums, and Brad Shepherd on guitar, harmonica, and vocals. Hoodoo Gurus were most popular on college radio, and this album was released at the peak of their popularity. The Gurus were influenced by B movies and pop culture of the 60's, and the similarity to the B-52's is clear.Friend of the show Joel Nabors brings us this album, which he heard at Auburn on WETL. Enjoy this trip back to “college in the 80's!” Party Machine This upbeat song features Brad Shepherd on harmonica, and is a song about getting paid, having no obligations for the weekend, and headed out to party. "Dig my words, it's a happening scene! Hitch a ride on the Party Machine."The Middle of the LandThis track is a little more hard rock oriented, with heavy percussion. It is about evangelical preachers and hypocrisy. What's My SceneA catchy guitar riff starts this song which was the most popular one off the album. It's about looking at life and love, and wondering when you're time will come. "Now the stage is set, where's my Juliet, baby?" Good TimesThis is a fun song which features The Bangles on background vocals. There was a planned tour co-headlined between the Hoodoo Gurus and The Bangles, but the skyrocketing popularity of The Bangles at the time resulted in the Gurus being the opening act. ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:The theme from the television series “The Twilight Zone” In May 1987, "The Twilight Zone" motion picture director John Landis was found not guilty of involuntary manslaughter in the death of actor Vic Morrow and two child actors, killed in a helicopter accident. STAFF PICKS:“Holy War” by John Butcher AxisWayne's staff pick features a rocking song with an easter feel from New England songwriter John Butcher. This song describes people who use religion to fight a holy war. Butcher identified with Jimi Hendrix, and the name Axis comes from the Hendrix album "Axis: Bold as Love." “Midnight Blue” by Lou GrammBrian brings us the lead single from Foreigner frontman Lou Gramm's solo debut. "Life is simple. It's either cherry red, or midnight blue." Cherry red is everything going well, midnight blue is dark and mysterious. They lyrics describe a couple who are broken up, but the boy vows to come back again.“Weapons of Love” by The TruthRob's staff pick digs deep from a group formed in 1982. This is The Truth's best selling single, and the title track from their album of the same name. Weapons of Love peaked at number 7 on the rock charts. “Just Like Heaven” by The CureJoel rounds us out this week with a well-known song from another college rock favorite. It sounds surprisingly upbeat, though still somehow melancholy, from ordinarily dark goth group The Cure. "Spinning on that dizzy edge. I kissed her face, I kissed her head." INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:"Initiation" by HelloweenThis instrumental track opens German heavy metal Helloween's album "The Keeper of the Seven Keys: Part I."
In this session, local futures talk about what Durango will look like and be in 2040. Storytellers include: Sarah Lemcke is a certified early childhood educator, advocate for children and passionate champion for progressive education. She is employed at Riverview Elementary School as a preschool teacher for children ages 3-5. Having always been passionate and fascinated by alternative forms of education, she spent the summer training at a forest kindergarten in Zurich, Switzerland. Her experiences as a forest teacher altered her paradigm around education for the better. Sarah is committed to bringing best practices into public education and is proud to work in a district where this mindset is encouraged and supported. Dr. Richard Grossman practiced obstetrics and gynecology in Durango for 40 years. For most of that time he was the volunteer medical director of the health department. He has written the column Population Matters for The Durango Herald since 1995. In high school he read an advertisement in Scientific American titled “A Statement of Conviction about Overpopulation” which said, “We believe that widespread, effective and voluntary use of medically sound and individually acceptable birth control is an essential factor in any humane design to raise world living standards and achieve international peace.” He was hooked and since that time has done what he can to help every child born in Durango be planned, healthy and loved. In addition, he has learned about the limits to growth, and learned that humans have gone far beyond those limits. Greg Hoch worked for the City of Durango’s Community Development Department for 35 years. He retired in 2016 when he was the department director, a job he describes as administering the public decision-making processes related to the physical forms and associated change within the city.

Download During this episode of Psychedelics Today, Kyle Buller interviews Dr. Richard Grossman, an ayahuasca ceremony facilitator and expert with a background in healing and acupuncture. Episode Quotes I find mystical poetry to be an amazing aid in ceremony work. Is it the vision or the emotion that you feel and then the vision comes? In my work, the psychedelic experience is about going beyond the visionary state. The core of all creation is in the heart and breath. Show Notes About Dr. Richard Grossman Has a long background in healing. He used to be a macrobiotic chef. Primeval meditations and licensed acupuncturist. Works with ayahuasca and San Pedro. How did Richard get involved in ayahuasca? A friend brought some up from Peru and his life changed in one night. It took him years as an acupuncturist learning more about healing. He’s been doing this for about thirty years. Do you integrate your acupuncture practice into ceremony? Not so much with ayahuasca - that’s done traditionally. He had a lot of experience with the Shipibo Tradition. With the San Pedro method, the body change happens in one day. Opinions on psychedelic visions. Many people want them and they’re a distraction. The real thing is that the source of everything is within. If a person can experience that for an instant, their life changes. There are a lot of things happening on subtle levels. The psychonaut and healing processes are quite different. What are some examples of ideas you’ve seen in the psychedelic community? People trying to draw in gods and goddesses. You need to see how deep a human being can go, it’s an infinite journey. What is it like to go deeper and deeper? If you can imagine a series of curtains parting over and over and over again. You begin to see places of illusion. During one of his trips, he visualized himself in a Nazi concentration camp. A voice told him to trust and forgive. He began to question what forgiveness and trust mean. Some people are seeking spirituality and not really healing within. Ayahuasca tourism is a fairly good thing, rather than people coming and ruining the jungle. How would you define a healing process? It’s a complex subject, he likes the idea of a series of concentric circles. Do you work with a person’s energy? People get very relaxed. If there is someone who can’t get relax he calms them with acupuncture. Do you think intoxicants affects the chi? San Pedro or ayahuasca are not considered intoxicants. He sees that ayahuasca is only good for the body. Psilocybin has a rough effect on the liver. The tannins in ayahuasca are valuable and bind toxins in the body. Do you have to worry about any cardiovascular problems? It is a stimulant so he screens people before doing the ceremony. Beauty is a healing process, beauty heals. Is there anything you’re excited about in the psychedelic world? When the community comes together to heal it’s powerful. We’re all going to a place of more love, peace, joy, and healing. What’s the outcome of thousands of people experiencing love and joy? What’s the ayahuasca ceremony structure? Constant music, keeping things from going totally wonky. There’s a point in the ceremony that it could go in either direction: Total group insanity or total group healing. Iowaska ceremonies can be dangerous. It’s something to be respected with its own spirit. You must hold close to the traditions of generations. There’s always a point during the ceremony where he feels it’s the most important and beautiful place he’s ever been. Drama’s not necessary, our culture wants the drama. We need to outgrow externalizing the blame. Life in our heart is meant to be enjoyed. Suffering to heal just doesn’t work. Culture seems to dwell on suffering, is that conditioning? The worst thing a human can possibly do is feeling guilty. "Guilt can’t fly and God wants you to fly." The nature of reality is joy and love. You need to be willing to let go of the things that don’t work. Psychedelics can be used as a guiding light. Any final advice, events? Find him on his website or on Facebook. Hoodoo Gurus: Hoodoo Gurus (who are often referred to as the Gurus by fans) are a 4-piece Australian band who are deemed as legends of their time. Reaching iconic status in 2007 when inducted into the ARIA Hall Of Fame, the Gurus were acknowledged as being one of the most inventive, lyrically smart and exciting bands of their time. The style is an eclectic fusion of 60s power pop, wild garage punk, hard rock and psychedelic kitsch, and this crazy combo is what helps to cement their iconic, unique style. Hailing from Sydney, they formed in 1981, fronted by legend Dave Faulkner, (songwriter, lead singer and guitarist) and have since seen many changes to their lineup, however have never travelled far from their roots. Current members include Brad Shepherd, Nik Reith and Richard Grossman. The Gurus have a stash of critically acclaimed singles under their belt, such as My Girl, Come Anytime, and Miss Freelove 69, but their biggest hit single, What’s My Scene, which was later modified to be ‘What’s My Team’ , which became the NRL’s year 2000 theme song. A lengthy hiatus followed their early success, and the band reformed following the success of ‘What’s My Team’ , with the publicity rejuvenating their career, opening them up to opportunities such as playing at the 2006 NRL Grand Final, 2007 SXSW, Splendour In The Grass and the Meredith Music Festival. The Hoodoo Gurus have still got it, and will forever remain as classic Aussie icons. Back when 4ZZZ started in 1976, a group of volunteers at the station led by John Stanwell started curating shows around Brisbane called the ‘Joint Effort’. Hoodoo Gurus played one of the Joint Effort’s back in the mid-80’s and when plans were underway for organising a Joint Effort show to celebrate 4ZZZ’s 40th Birthday, the Gurus were at the top of the list to invite back to headline the show. Recorded at the Hamilton Hotel as part of the Return Of The Joint Effort show in Brisbane on the 29th of August, 2015. Recorded and mixed by Branko Cosic. Airing details: Originally via Zed Digital, 7-8pm, Sunday 19th of March 2017. Show production and engineering: Branko Cosic.

Richard is a acupuncturist and an Oriental medical doctor, who works extensively with a variety of healing modalities which include herbal medicine, sound healing and ayahuasca. Richard began his search for meaning at an early age, when he developed a strong interest in the nature of healing.Shortly after beginning his medical practice, his lifelong interest in healing and spirit merged again, joined, this time, by the power and profound beauty of entheogens with sound and music, and went on to study extensively with indigenous healers in Ecuador and Peru.
Imagine if decisions in Washington, or at any level of government for that matter, were really made on the basis of policy. If careful analysis could win out over politics. Certainly the current health care debate would be very different. But so would our discussions about economic policy. If our discussion of the 2008 financial meltdown had been about analysis of what happened, as opposed to who's to blame, perhaps we’ve have learned a lot more from it. Wesleyan Professor of Economics, Richard Grossman takes a long view of several economic crises and what we got WRONG: Nine Economic Policy Disasters and What We Can Learn from Them.My conversation with Richard Grossman:

Richard Grossman The Tao of Ralph Waldo Emerson Richard Grossman is a Commonweal friend of 25 years. As a respected medical educator in “the other medicines,” (the title of another of his books), Grossman participated as a guest staff member in one of the early Commonweal Cancer Help Programs in the 1980s. He then started his own Cancer Help Program at Wainwright House in Rye, New York. He now teaches in the Smith Farm Cancer Help Program outside Washington, D.C. Grossman is a preternaturally youthful 88-year-old, married to the novelist Ann Arenberg. They live in Salisbury, Connecticut. Join Michael Lerner in this conversation about Richard’s studies and thoughts about Ralph Waldo Emerson—philosopher, essayist, poet, lecturer, and journal-keeper. Richard Grossman Richard is an essayist, psychotherapist, medical educator, and former book publisher. The six books he has written include The Tao of Emerson and A Year with Emerson, which won the Umhoefer Prize for achievement in the humanities, awarded by the Arts and Humanities Foundation. He has read Emerson daily for over 50 years. Richard’s website has Emerson’s complete journals and the bulk of his other writings on-line. Grossman considers Emerson a precursor of contemporary humanistic and transpersonal psychology. In 1970 Michael Murphy of Esalen Institute told Grossman about Roberto Assagioli, the Italian psychologist and founder of the transpersonal psychology called Psychosynthesis. Grossman published Assagioli’s books Psychosynthesis and The Act of Will in America. Grossman also discovered fundamental resonances between Emerson and Lao Tse, the mysterious Chinese Taoist and author of the Tao Te Ching. Find out more about The New School at tns.commonweal.org.
