Martin Doyle's new book “Dirty Linen: The Troubles in my Homeplace” details the events of the troubles in his local area and the wide reaching effects that the conflict had on everyone's lives. In my personal opinion the book is one of the very finest works on the subject of troubles-era Northern Ireland and is a masterfully crafted collections of human stories in a non-partisan fashion. We speak about how Martin's area was terrorized by the infamous "Glennane Gang” and loyalist mass murderer Robin Jackson during the height of their carnage. Martin told me about the anti-catholic discrimination that he dealt in school and how everyday life would be altered by living in such tumultuous times.Martin also spoke about the multi century history of religious clash in Ireland especially in the north where many planters had been settled and how this sewed the seed for future conflict and violence.PLEASE SUBSCRIBE & LEAVE A 5 STAR RATING TO HELP THE SHOW CONTINUE TO GROW***TIMESTAMPS*** 00:00 Background & “Dirty Linen” metaphor07:25 “Being aware of history but not weaponizing it”, The RUC father& son 14:10 Ways that life was disrupted by the conflict 22:10 Miami Showband Massacre & Stephen Travers 25:00 Religion as a proxy for other divisions + History of catholic/protestant relations in the north 32:25 Anti-catholic discrimination in Martin's school42:05 ROBIN JACKSON & THE GLENANNE GANG terrorizing Martin's area 49:10 1982 in Bainbridge town (b*mbed delivered by “Killing Rage” author Eamon Collins)1:01:20 FREEDOM FIGHTER/TERRORIST distinction 1:08:30 Filling in contextual holes in memory about his childhood

In 1980, underdog English table tennis player John Hilton stunned audiences with his style of play, effortlessly confounding talented European opponents. In this episode of Sideways, Matthew puts his tactics under the microscope to discover how Hilton used deception to fool his opponents, and use their strengths against them. Deception in sport, Matthew argues, is not underhand, so long as it's within the rules - and it's everywhere. With the help of sports psychologist Dr Robin Jackson and goalkeeper Chloe Morgan, Matthew examines the high velocities and ultra-fast reaction times of elite sport which make deception so prevalent, and effective. And he charts the rise of data analysis in British sport, from its strange origins on the football terraces to today's high tech data collection and teams of analysts. Swathes of data mean today's athletes can set out more informed than ever about their opponents. But as Matthew discovers, this doesn't necessarily make them immune to deception. In fact, it could make them more vulnerable. With former European table tennis champion John Hilton; Dr Robin Jackson, reader in Sport Psychology at Loughborough University; Crystal Palace Women's Goalkeeper Chloe Morgan; Statistician Richard Pollard; and Maria Konnikova, journalist and author of The Confidence Game. He has released two albums, Dark Stars (2017) and Dust Diaries (2012), has 10+ years experience touring the world with bands, and hosts the Soiree Retreat, a four-day event open to anyone interested in art, the craft of songwriting, learning music, or enjoying community and connection.Robin talks about life on the road, life after the road, his passion for creating community through hosting music events, and how those events have changed his life.Welcome to Episode 9.MUSIC CREDITSOPHELIA- (INTRO/OUTRO) - LES HAYDENROSES AND GOLD - ROBIN JACKSONDYNOMITE - MARCH 4TH MARCHING BANDOCTOBER RAIN - ROBIN JACKSONPORTLAND TRAFFIC - ROBIN JACKSONHOSTED & RECORDED BY MICHELLE MCAFEEWWW.SONGBONES.COM© 2018-2020 SONGBONES MAGAZINE AND PODCAST

Have you or has someone you know been in a job that you or they are really good at, but it just doesn’t feel like you or they are making the biggest possible impact? Most people will answer yes to this question. The difference between a career of passion and impact and a career of being good at something comes down to taking the time to discover what that passion or zone of genius really is.  Today’s guest took the time to discover what she really wanted to do and what she felt passionate about. Dr. Robin Jackson felt called to teach and started out as a high school teacher, she then became a middle school administrator, and then put in her resignation instead of accepting a promotion as principal. Even though, it would be a great promotion, she knew she was called to do something else.  Dr. Robin Jackson is the founder of Mindsteps Inc. an educational consulting firm that helps educators turn their schools into success stories using the resources they already have. She is also the author of 10 books including the best-selling Never Work Harder Than Your Students and Other Principles of Great Teaching and Never Underestimate Your Teachers: Instructional Leadership for Excellence in Every Classroom.  She has been sending out a newsletter since 2006, but she wanted to have more intimacy with her audience. She started her School Leadership Reimagined Podcast in 2018, and discovered she not only had that intimacy and better connection with her audience, but the podcast helped her explain complex topics better and helped better prepare clients for her Builder’s Lab workshop. Robyn is so smart. Her podcast not only offers methods and tips to create better school leaders but better leaders overall. I found this conversation insightful, motivating, and inspiring, and I think you will too. Show Notes: [03:42] Robyn started out as a high school English teacher. She then became a middle school administrator. [04:08] She began to feel that she was called to do something else. She was about to be promoted as principal when she realized she wanted to quit her job and write a book. [05:15] She didn't know how everything would work, but she started a newsletter, Mindsteps Inc. and consulting. She had everything set up by the time she quit her job.  [06:07] Robyn had learned a lot working in schools about what to do and what not to do.  [06:20] Her work has crystallized with the idea that you can transform your school with the resources and people that you have. [06:37] She created a model for organizational transformation focused on schools. You can transform your teachers. The underlying principles were based on business principles. [08:51] If a school is struggling, it usually starts at the leadership or principal level. Mindsteps needed to help leadership, so that they could truly transform their schools.  [09:28] They worked their way backwards from the results they wanted to see with the kids. [10:57] In high school, Robyn realized it was her calling to be a teacher. That's what she was meant to be. [11:31] Different teachers come into your life at different times when you need them. [11:53] In college, an English teacher gave Robyn a copy of Toni Morrison's Beloved, and it was the first time Robyn had read a book by an African American Author.  [12:29] She has been blessed to have teachers who show up throughout her academic career and business.  [13:35] Robyn has been doing a newsletter since 2006. She felt intimacy was missing.  [14:38] She began podcasting to provide intimacy and a deeper experience. [15:41] Podcasting also allowed Robyn to fill a void that she saw in the education space. She wanted her podcast to be educational and transformational. [16:10] The podcast has helped Robyn to develop a deeper relationship with her clients. She can connect more with her audience, because they've been having a conversation every week. It also allows people to understand the work that she is doing in a way that enables them to buy in. [17:10] Listening to the podcast creates primed and ready to work clients. [17:33] The podcast also enables Robyn to reach a wider audience and people who may not necessarily read things like newsletters. [18:28] Robyn shares a story of a Builder's Lab member who came from the podcast and had a huge breakthrough because of the podcast.  [20:10] When people listen to your podcast, they become transformed by what you are saying.  [21:13] She started thinking about a podcast in 2017, but she didn't have the team. She decided to commit for a year. She then found the PPS team to help kick things off and help with production. [23:29] Robyn defines success on impact and the difference the show makes in people's lives not download numbers. Her focus is to help schools turn into success stories.  [25:12] She travels a lot, so needs to take breaks or have seasons. It also helps her focus on a small amount of episodes at a time and then take a break and travel. Educators also have seasons.  [26:19] They do a fall season and spring season which corresponds with the educators seasons.  [29:06] Your zone of genius is what serves others and truly serves you. Robyn took time to think about what she wanted to do, and she started doing the morning pages. She discovered her dream and was brave enough to follow it. [32:58] She is safer and happier in her zone of genius.  [33:48] Mindset is a family business, and their big goal is to have a wider impact and not have everything revolve around Robyn.  [36:06] Darrell's takeaways: Get The Big Leap. Listen to your calling and pay attention. Find your zone of genius. Podcast about what brings you joy. Pause and evaluate what you are doing. Journal and think about your zone of genius. Podcasting provides a level of intimacy and professional development that was missing from the written word. It also helps create better prepared clients.  Links and Resources: Pro Podcast Solutions Mindsteps Inc. Builder’s Lab School Leadership Reimagined Podcast Robyn R. Hello there. Another Coffeeshop Conversation coming to you from OMN via World Cup Coffee and Tea at NW 18th and Glisan. In the coffeeshop today is Robin Jackson who you may know from March Fourth, Vagabond Opera, the Joy Now Arts Program (a musical circus for kids) and/or his Songwriter Soiree from which his new album, Dark Stars is most connected. It is dropping on Saturday, November 11 with a release show at Secret Society. And it’s coming out at the perfect time. It matches the drippy darkness of Autumn in Portland. “Alchemizes Rainy Day Doldrums” is what he says it does. Let’s find out what’s behind it, and if a revival of Vagabond Opera is possible. He’s been at the center of some of our most memorable music.

PORTLAND, OR - Oregonian's Steve Woodward has hopped aboard today with multi-media coverage of the WNBR. He's reporting 800 riders. VIDEO STORY LINK Riding cheek to cheek Not for naught nor for naughtiness do 800 cyclists pedal naked, but rather to do the globe some good Tuesday, June 12, 2007 STEVE WOODWARD Naked was the fashion Saturday night, and bikes were the luxury vehicle of choice. About midnight, with only the glow of streetlights draping them, an estimated 800 men and women pedaled madly across the Hawthorne Bridge into downtown Portland, up Northwest 23rd Avenue, down West Burnside and back into Southeast Portland in what has become an annual Portland tradition: the World Naked Bike Ride. Whooping and honking bicycle horns, the riders drew waves, cheers, laughter, camera flashes and favorable comparisons to Portland's "other" parade that very morning. Gawkers abandoned drinks and poured out of bars. Teenagers leaned out of a white stretch limousine to offer riders high-fives. According to reports from bikers, some spectators even joined the ragtag parade, shedding clothes and hopping on their own bikes. What's the occasion? The bare facts: Since 2004, Portland-area bicyclists have participated in a global event in which riders showing more skin than not ride in public to protest oil dependency. Their nakedness demonstrates bicyclists' vulnerability to cars. Last year, the Portland event drew about 500 "naked" bikers, the largest such ride in North America, according to organizers. "Portland is just a very great place," Erin Downs, a 17-year-old Northeast Portland high-school student, said at the warehouse party after the ride. "I want to be part of Portland," she said, dressed in blue hair, a blue kerchief and two studded leather belts slung low. "This is the life, blood and veins of Portland. If I didn't show up, how could I be a Portlander?" "I expected more naked people," said Mick Arrell, a 19-year-old Southeast Portland man with red, blue and green paint smeared randomly across his chest and arms. It's true. Many people stripped only as far as their skivvies. "I didn't strip down at the request of my roommate," explained Jimmy Schmierbach, 25, of Northeast Portland. "She said she didn't want to look at my junk." His roommate returned the favor, riding in her bra and panties. Although she was wearing frilly orange underwear with blue trim when interviewed, April ("like the month") Wiza said she was less modest during the ride. "All the good parts were showing," said the 27-year-old Southeast Portland resident. Wiza also displayed a poetic message for anyone behind her: "LESS GAS MORE (rhymes with 'gas')." The hand-painted message included an arrow pointing readers to her (rhymes with "gas"). On the blocked-off street outside the Organics To You warehouse party after the ride, several men had added ties to their birthday suits. One woman wore nothing on her chest but a red Superman logo. "Green power," declared a man's back. One woman dressed provocatively in cheap black lingerie -- cheap because it was painted on. Unlike many riders, friends Eric Miller, Kyle Kelley and Robin Jackson were fully dressed in something other than facial hair: Miller in natty beret; Kelley in full-on pink-and-maroon ensemble, complete with pink, feathered skateboarder's helmet; and Jackson in black fedora, dark pinstripes and red-and-white checkered vest. Miller launched his ride with a figurative fig leaf or two to preserve his modesty. "I started out not all the way," Miller said, "but I was feeling it." And, apparently, if one is feeling it, there's naught to do but shed the remains of one's modesty -- even in the middle of the Hawthorne Bridge. "It's nice to let go," said Jackson, an erstwhile Naked Bike Rider and a member, with Miller, of Portland's Marchfourth Marching Band. Actually, Jackson was dressed during the ride, too. "I was hanging out with my parents," he said sheepishly. Steve Woodward: 503-294-5134; stevewoodward@ news.oregonian.com
