Tom Luddy was a quiet titan of cinema. He presided over the Pacific Film Archive in Berkeley for some 10 years, co-founded and directed The Telluride Film Festival for nearly 50 years, produced some 14 movies, match-made dozens of international love affairs, and foraged for the most beautiful, political, important, risky films and made sure there was a place for them to be seen in the world. And that the people making this powerful work were known and knew each other. Tom Luddy with his photographic memory, his infinite rolodex, his encyclopedic knowledge of global cinema and his catalytic ability to connect people, caused the most unusual of collaborations to come to be. Tom championed the French New Wave, the Czech New Wave, Brazilian cinema novo, dissident Soviet cinema, directors Francis Coppola, Jean-Luc Godard, Werner Herzog, Agnes Varda, Les Blank, Paul Schrader, Agnieszka Holland, Barry Jenkins, Laurie Anderson and countless others.Tom passed away on February 13, 2023. There's a giant hole in the screen without him here. But his DNA is in the hundreds of filmmakers, musicians, writers and activists he nurtured and inspired. The Tom Luddy Connection: The Man, The Movies, The Rolodex was produced by Evan Jacoby and The Kitchen Sisters (Davia Nelson & Nikki Silva) in collaboration with Brandi Howell and Nathan Dalton. Mixed by Jim McKee.
We're celebrating the Melbourne Cinémathèque's 40th anniversary this week, with two of the pre-eminent film society's co-curators in the studio. Primal Screen favourite Cerise Howard and Associate Professor Adrian Danks (making his PS debut!) join Flick Ford to reflect on Melbourne Cinémathèque's vital contribution to cinema and to talk about their upcoming program on Australian documentary filmmaker Tom Zubrycki. A hugely important filmmaker in his own right, but also a key mentor and producer for many other Australian filmmakers that have followed. They also review Polish filmmaker Agnieszka Holland's latest film Green Border, a brutalising drama rooted in deep research that is so urgently of the moment, its potency is manifold. It tells the story of refugees from the Middle East and Africa trying to reach the European Union court in a geopolitical crisis triggered by the Belarusian dictator Lukashenko.Listen back for more on this discussion of how Zubrycki's and Holland's films remain committed to social justice, human rights and the ethics of filmmaking.

In the Fall 2024 issue of Liberties Quarterly, managing editor Celeste Marcus writes about the great Polish movie director Agnieszka Holland. Marcus argues that the 75 year-old Holland - best known for her 1990 movie Europa Europa - remains as relevant as ever because of her focus on what she calls the “terrifying contingency” of social breakdown. Linking Holland's latest film, Green Border, a movie about the the plight of east European migrants with Donald Trump's dehumanization of American migrants, Marcus argues that “no human hates like the human.” And the very worst humans, Marcus reminds us, with a barely concealed reference to Trump and Putin, “do not live under beds or in our imaginations; they sit in paneled offices behind mahogany desks, signing bills into law, raising and razing cities with the same hand.”Celeste Marcus is the managing editor of Liberties Journal of Culture and Politics and the co-host of “The DC Salon” podcast. She is at work on a biography of the artist Chaim Soutine.Named as one of the "100 most connected men" by GQ magazine, Andrew Keen is amongst the world's best known broadcasters and commentators. Wiz RECOMMENDS The Secret Garden I know what you are thinking: what an odd film to suddenly decide to watch. The Secret Garden, Agnieszka Holland's 1993 adaptation of the novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett, is honestly a movie that has been forgotten despite that it's considered a great adaptation of a beloved novel and is shot by one of the best cinematographers of all-time: Roger Deakins. And by no surprise whatsoever, The Secret Garden is gorgeous. Everything in the movie has a magical feel to it, despite it being more grounded than whimsical. But a lot of the scenes, whether it's inside the manor or in the garden, it has an absolutely stunning look that elevates the story three-fold. But the film is not only just a looker, but it's also a thoughtfully artistic film. The film has balanced perfectly the sadder elements of the film with the more fantastical, which helps in not only being something that the audience it was meant for enjoying it, but adults as well. It's honestly very well done: even when the film gets dark dealing with death, illness and neglect, it has this feel that makes it seem more fairy tale than tragic drama. But I'll say this: if you are an adult just wanting to watch a movie, this isn't as in-depth as you'd like it. Again, the main audience is likely pre-teen and female who also likes nature (and melancholy, honestly), but there is just enough in the film for parents to get something out of it. It's actually quite surprising this movie doesn't get talked about more as a film that has aged so well: it's gorgeous with a smartly done story. Warner Bros. should release a Limited 4K UHD of this film: I'd snatch it in a second.
On September 16, we gathered at the stunning Ukrainian Institute of America in New York City for a very special evening. It was a celebration of the release of In the Shadow of Stalin, the powerful graphic novel adaptation of the film Mr. Jones, directed by the brilliant Agnieszka Holland. The night was filled with creativity, conversation, and community. Andrea had the honor of being joined by journalist Terrell Starr, who shared insights and moving stories from Ukraine. His firsthand account brought into sharp focus the ongoing struggle for freedom and the resilience of the Ukrainian people. It was also an incredible opportunity to connect with so many passionate and engaged individuals who share a deep commitment to truth and justice.
Convicted felon Donald Trump relies on a well-worn GOP playbook to scare their voters to the polls: stir up moral panic over LGBTQ people. Moms for Liberty—well-funded by shadowy right-wing interests—are out there banning books and promoting anti-trans, anti-gay laws straight from Viktor Orban's Hungary and Putin's Russia. We might inadvertently feed into their culture war hysteria if we don't step back and see how their disinformation machine works. As Erin Reed points out in her essential guide to our times “Erin in the Morning,” trans care is under attack in half of the country. Meanwhile, the far right stirs up fear, demonizing trans people, especially trans children and their families, just like Karl Rove did with gay marriage in 2004, to secure a second term for war criminal George W. Bush. But trans people have always existed. They're part of human history, brutally erased by colonial powers, according to a must-read report from ABC News in our show notes below. So, what's the antidote to the far-right's moral panic? Call it out for what it is. Protect trans kids. Push back against oligarchs. Remember, this is about basic human rights. As highlighted in Abi Maxwell's poignant memoir One Day I'll Grow Up and Be a Beautiful Woman: A Mother's Story, love and dignity for trans children are crucial to building safer, more compassionate communities for everyone. Maxwell's story focuses on her daughter, Greta, a courageous little girl who, from a very young age, understood she was a girl, even though she was born a boy. The confusion wasn't Greta's—it was the adults around her, including teachers and parents in their small New Hampshire town, who struggled to accept her identity. Maxwell recounts their family's painful journey through relentless bullying and institutional barriers, a journey that mirrors the challenges faced by countless other trans families in America today. Maxwell's memoir isn't just a heart-wrenching tale of a mother fighting for her child; it's also a stark reminder of how disinformation and fearmongering, often driven by far-right extremists, are weaponized to divide us. As we've seen with the rise of groups like Moms for Liberty, the attacks on LGBTQ+ rights—particularly against trans children—are often orchestrated by powerful interests looking to distract and manipulate voters. In our interview with Maxwell, she sheds light on the far-right's disinformation playbook and shares insights on how we can rise above it. It's time to move beyond the hate and fear and build a society that values love, acceptance, and the dignity of all people, no matter their gender identity. Let's start by protecting some of the most vulnerable among us: our trans kids. The song you heard in this week's show is “Doors Are Opening” by The Society of Rockets. Check out their brilliant work here! http://societyofrockets.org/ * Ready to engage in meaningful discussions and connect with like-minded individuals? Guess who finally decided to do their job! The Department of Justice dropped indictments on a sweeping Russian disinformation criminal ring, funding MAGA social media-stormtroops calling for the violent overthrow of our democracy to establish a Russian-style dictatorship and abandoning Ukraine to Russia, where it would be genocided. As Gaslit Nation has long warned: If it sounds like a Kremlin shill, it's a Kremlin shill. Fortunately for the DOJ, Russian-backed MAGA traitors in Congress confessed to being unregistered foreign agents by deliberately blocking Ukraine aid for six months, giving Russia the advantage in a dangerous invasion threatening all of Europe. Follow the money! Lock the traitors up! In this week's bonus show, exclusive to subscribers at the Truth-teller level ($5/month) and higher on Patreon, Russian mafia expert Olga Lautman of the Kremlin File podcast joins Gaslit Nation to break down the sweeping charges by the Feds, exposing Russian active measures trying to steal the election for Trump like they did in 2016, with help from MAGA/Russia shills like Dave Rubin, Tim Pool, Benny Johnson, Lauren Chen, and Lauren Southern, among others. Longtime Trump/Russia connector, Kremlin propagandist, and Senator Rand Paul advisor Dimitri Simes was also indicted, along with his Russian-born wife. Move over, first class passengers on the Titanic! America has a new class of doomed elites! Extreme income inequality threatens our democracy and the security of the world, but unions are fighting back, showing our path forward for the safety of everyone. C.E.O.s and billionaires celebrate record-breaking profits, but for everyday workers, wages have remained stagnant, not keeping pace with the rising cost of living. The result? The American Dream is increasingly resembling a Neoliberal Ponzi Scheme, where the promise of prosperity seems to be reserved for nepo-babies. Beyond the obvious moral implications, income inequality has profound consequences for our society. It undermines trust in institutions, worsens political instability, and contributes to declining life expectancy—a stark reality in America today. When the rich get richer and the rest of us get left behind, it doesn't just create social rifts; it destabilizes the United States, and therefore the world. How do we overcome this crisis? The renaissance of unions will strengthen our economy for all and protect our democracy. This week's guest Michael Podhorzer has been on the frontlines of this fight for decades, as the former longtime political director of the AFL-CIO – the largest federation of unions in the United States. Podhorzer is a senior fellow at the Center for American Progress, the chair of the Analyst Institute, the Research Collaborative and the Defend Democracy Project, and writes the Substack Weekend Reading. A 2021 TIME article described Podhorzer as the architect of a broad movement that helped protect the integrity of our vote in the 2020 election. This week's bonus show, available to subscribers at the Truth-teller level ($5/month) and higher, includes Podhorzer's insights on how to protect the 2024 election, in an excerpt available to all. Exclusive to our Patreon supporters, this week's bonus show also includes a deep-dive examination of the recent arrest of Telegram's C.E.O. Remember when Trump was impeached for holding up Ukraine aid to pressure Zelensky into fabricating a scandal about Biden? That's how Trump famously operates—pushing for a quid pro quo. That brings us to Egypt, a dictatorship with a track record of bribing Americans, including disgraced Democratic Senator Bob Menendez, who was found guilty on all counts of being a paid foreign agent of Egypt. In 2016, Trump met with Egyptian dictator Abdel Fattah el-Sisi behind closed doors at the U.N. General Assembly weeks before the election, likely breaking the Logan Act at a time when President Obama's foreign policy shunned el-Sisi for his human rights abuses and overthrowing Egypt's first democratically elected leader. But it gets worse. Trump's relationship with Egypt isn't just about money; it's about power—nuclear power. El-Sisi's regime is closely aligned with the Kremlin. Experts raised alarms about Russia's nuclear ambitions in the Middle East, where earlier this year Russia began building a nuclear power station in Egypt. In the polls, convicted felon Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris are essentially tied. Jill Stein, Cornel West, and RFK, Jr. are third-party candidates, supported by far-right dark money groups aiming to "Ralph Nader" the election in Trump's favor. Meanwhile, mainstream media—especially the New York Times—continues to normalize MAGA fascism. Amidst growing election anxiety, it might be difficult to hear the pleas from the Uncommitted movement and their Democratic allies, who are advocating for a permanent ceasefire and hostage deal to end the war in Gaza. To help us understand the Uncommitted movement and its significance in this election, this week's guest is Palestinian-American and Georgia state representative Ruwa Romman. She was on a short list of Palestinian-Americans who submitted a two-minute speech for the DNC, which was ultimately rejected, despite the invitation to Democratic leadership to collaborate on the text. Though not an Uncommitted delegate herself, Rep. Romman will explain how to bridge our differences and move forward with a unified front. Holding our elected officials accountable isn't just a civic duty—it's essential for enacting real change and enforcing laws effectively, especially those to hold war criminals like Netanyahu and Hamas accountable. Despite the challenges ahead, there's a glimmer of hope. This week's bonus show, exclusive to our Patreon supporters at the Truth-teller ($5/month) level and higher, delves into how Trump broke the law (yet again!) to come to power in the 2016 election by accepting an illegal campaign donation from Egypt's dictatorship. This week's show kicks off with United States Senator for Georgia Raphael Warnock at the Democratic National Convention, essentially reassuring white men no one is coming for their jobs–except the union-busting oligarch-backed Republicans they tend to vote for. With recent polling trends and the resurgence of unions, could the "dying of whiteness" era finally be on its way out? CNN reports that white working-class voters without a college degree in the Midwest are shifting their support from Donald Trump to Kamala Harris. Even in Nebraska's swing 2nd District—in a heavily Republican state—Harris beats Trump. To dig deeper, we're joined by expert white man Ross Morales-Rocketto, the lead organizer of White Dudes for Harris. Through one Zoom call, Ross and his team raised $4.5 million for the Harris-Walz Campaign, engaging 200,000 participants across all 50 states. But this isn't just a fleeting moment; it's a movement. Ross is on a mission to challenge the toxic masculinity perpetuated by figures like Jordan Peterson and Andrew Tate, promoting a new masculinity defined by empathy and community. He's also the co-founder and co-executive director of Run for Something, which helped elect over 1,000 young people, ushering in a new generation of progressive leaders. We'll also hear from Terrell Starr of the Black Diplomats Podcast and Substack, who will provide crucial insights on dismantling toxic masculinity from a Black queer perspective. For our Patreon subscribers at the Truth-teller level ($5/month) and above, our bonus show, available on August 24th—Ukraine's Independence Day—celebrates the role of art in Ukraine's resistance to Russian fascism and explores how we can address both personal and collective trauma. Dave is under the weather this week (feel better soon, Dave!), so Megan and Evan cover the week's movies together. First, Megan reviews Agnieszka Holland's vital, yet harrowing drama GREEN BORDER (3:33), which follows a family of refugees from Syria, a border guard, and a group of activists providing aid to refugees, who converge on the Polish-Belarusian border during a humanitarian crisis. Then Evan and Megan dig into Shawn Levy's much-anticipated superhero film DEADPOOL & WOLVERINE (26:26), which features Ryan Reynolds/Deadpool teaming up with Hugh Jackman as Wolverine! Plus, in this week's Patreon exclusive audio, we discuss the winner of our summer heatwave poll, Sidney Lumet's 1957 legal drama 12 ANGRY MEN!

"Green Border" had its world premiere at the 2023 Venice International Film Festival, where it received critical acclaim for Director/Co-Writer Agnieszka Holland's harrowing depiction of the refugee crisis sweeping its way through the Belarus–European Union border. With stark black and white photography, intense performances and a vast but intimate scope that looks at how the crisis has impacted the lives of so many, the film stands out as one of the most controversial but important films of the year. Holland was kind enough to spend some time talking with us about her work on the film, which you can listen to below.

This week we're excited to present a conversation from the 61st New York Film Festival with Green Border director Agnieszka Holland, cinematographer Tomasz Naumiuk, and cast members Behi Djanati Atai and Joely Mbundu. This conversation was moderated by FLC Assistant Programmer Madeline Whittle. Green Border was a Main Slate selection of NYFF61 and will open in select theaters on June 19th. A Syrian family leaves the violence of their country behind, hoping to cross from Belarus into Poland and then onto the safe haven of Sweden. But, like so many lost souls, they end up caught in a political maelstrom, demonized by the Polish government and press and used as pawns in an inhumane, deadly border game. This harrowing, urgent drama from the veteran Polish director Agnieszka Holland constructs an intricate account of the contemporary global humanitarian crisis, expanding out to encompass the interconnected lives of security patrol officers, activist lawyers, and civilians who put themselves on the line for strangers. With the sobering and sometimes shocking Green Border, Holland reaffirms both her unyielding commitment to political filmmaking and the ability of immersive storytelling to illuminate the darkest corners of the world.

Today Jen's guest is journalist, filmmaker, author, and activist Andrea Chalupa. You know Andrea from her award-winning podcast Gaslit Nation that she founded with Sarah Kendzior. Fake populism. Demonizing the press. Scapegoating. Propaganda. Personal militia. All ingredients for a successful dictatorship and topics of their conversation. Andrea and Sarah collaborated on the book we are discussing today called DICTATORSHIP: IT'S EASIER THAN YOU THINK. They describe DICTATORSHIP as “a wild ride showing the perks and pitfalls of becoming a dictator, and how to overthrow one.” Part of the book focuses on Soviet leader Joseph Stalin's genocidal famine in Ukraine in 1933. Andrea is also the writer and producer of the award-winning journalistic thriller that was produced by MGM called Mr. Jones that came out in 2019. Mr. Jones was directed by three-time Academy Award-nominee Agnieszka Holland (known for her work on Europa Europa; The Secret Garden; House of Cards; The Wire) and starring James Norton, Vanessa Kirby, and Peter Sarsgaard. Ep. 208: Amy Taubin on the New York Film Festival 2023 Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw. I'm your host, Nicolas Rapold. This year, the 61st New York Film Festival curated a notably strong selection of films drawn from other festivals as well as a few premieres of its own. To discuss her critical highlights, I was delighted to welcome back the one and only Amy Taubin (whose report on this edition appears in Artforum). Among the films discussed are Agnieszka Holland's Green Border, May December (Todd Haynes), Jean-Luc Godard's final film, Poor Things (Yorgos Lanthimos), Janet Planet (Annie Baker), Going to Mars: The Nikki Giovanni Project (Joe Brewster and Michèle Stephenson), Menus-Plaisirs: Les Troisgros (Frederick Wiseman), and The Sweet East (Sean Price Williams). Agnieszka Holland is perhaps best known for her films Europa Europa, Angry Harvest and In Darkness, as well as adaptations of The Secret Garden and Washington Square. Her latest film, Green Border, about the Syrian refugee crisis along Poland's border with Belarus, is having its North American premiere at TIFF. In 2013, she spoke to Eleanor Wachtel about her three-part series, Burning Bush, set during the Prague Spring. *This episode originally aired Dec. 17, 2013.
Ep. 202: Venice 2023 with Jessica Kiang: Priscilla, Green Border, Hit Man, Coup de Chance Welcome to The Last Thing I Saw. I'm your host, Nicolas Rapold. This week I'm reporting from the 80th Venice Film Festival. This time I'm talking with Jessica Kiang, who is writing about the festival for Variety, Sight & Sound, and The New York Times. We discuss premieres from the festival's second week: Sofia Coppola's Priscilla, Agnieszka Holland's Green Border, Richard Linklater's Hit Man, and Woody Allen's Coup de Chance. Please note: the audio may sound different about halfway through because of recording conditions—but don't miss out on Kiang's essential commentary!
