In collaboration with the University of Auckland, Catherine and Jesse bring us an exciting programme which comprises four-hand piano works and solo performances, ranging from the mid-eighteenth century to the twentieth century. As a duet, they present Mozart's Sonata in D major K.381. Composed in the Galant style, it features elegant melodies, simplicity, and clarity. They will also play Mendelssohn's Andante and Allegro Brillante, salon music graced with polished elegance and craftsmanship. This duet is almost never played in the piano four-hands repertoire - a hidden gem for sure! The concert will also explore solo performances, including Ravel's Ondine, Prokofiev's Piano Sonata No. 7... and more! Catherine and Jesse are both students from the University of Auckland. Jesse is currently under the tutelage of Sarah Watkins and Bryan Sayer, and Catherine is studying under Richard Liu. At the University, Jesse is a recipient of the Kathleen Mary Reardon Memorial Music Scholarship and the Carl and Alberta Rosenfeldt Prize in Chamber Music. Other awards include Llewelyn Jones Prize in Music for Piano (1st Prize) and First at the Sixth Virtuoso International Competition in Korea. Additionally, he is a member of the APO's Aspiring Musicians Program. Aside from piano playing, Jesse is also a passionate violinist and violist. Catherine was awarded Runner-up and Peoples' Choice at the National Young Performer of the Year Award and also 'Best Performance of a NZ work' at the National Piano Competition in 2022. Catherine gave her debut solo recital last year as part of the Lewis Eady Charitable Trust Emerging Artists' Series, and is a current APO Haydn Staples Piano Scholar.

We start Part 2 of the Musikfest Exordium podcasts with the all important weather forecast with Bobby Martrich, chief meteorologist at EPAWA. Over the 10 days of August, the fest can often be hit with a heat wave, thunderstorms, hail, etc, so it's important to be prepared. Last year we lucked out with near perfect weather, so lets see if Bobby, can work his magic again this year! Then we'll spend time with Igor from the Red Elvises to hear about his amazing story growing up in the Ukraine, winning Star Search with Limpopo in the 90s, and coming to the US. He'll even perform an acoustic song live! We'll then hear from Richard Liu, the chair of the Performing Arts board at ArtsQuest. We'll learn more about how the board works all year long to play a role in bringing arts and culture to the Lehigh Valley. He'll also share how effective and helpful the Musikfest app is for navigating the schedule and getting to see as many of the artists you logistically can.Ever wonder what it takes to set everything up and respond to the various emergencies and incidents throughout? We'll be joined by "Sheriff of the Northside" Gerard Longo, who you'll remember was on our show back in May to share his story and how he founded Underground Music Collective in Nashville, but comes back every year to play a vital role in getting Musikfest up and running smooth all week long. We'll also have an exciting announcement to share! Then we'll wrap things up (obvi) with music. We'l be joined by Billy Bauer and Bobby Siegfried, who both have sets during the fest for their own projects, and then join forces on the last day for a DMB tribute set. They'll play a few songs and get us ready for Musikfest!!As always, our hope is to bring you "your next favorite band". For the MAEKAN and DSPTCH family, we've watched each other grow with great interest. Both of us share a similar perspective on creating and putting things out into the world. So when we first decided to explore creating product, DSPTCH was a natural first partner. Their flexible in-house manufacturing meant lower minimums and utilitarian design philosophy vibed with our perspective on what we wished to put out into an already crowded world. The timeline for putting this tote out into the world took longer than anticipated, yet the conversation that supported this project and the underlying premise behind how we collectively run our companies remains unchanged. We're excited to both share this thoughtful conversation and the release of our MAEKAN x DSPTCH “Done Slow, Done Right” Tote Bag. Director Richard Lui’s SKY BLOSSOM is a raw, uplifting window into 24.5 million children and millennials stepping forward as frontline heroes. Caring for family with tough medical conditions, they stay at home doing things often seen only in hospitals. They are cheerleaders, work part time, and go to college - but also live double lives - quietly growing up as America's next greatest generation. The filmmaker, veteran journalist and award-winning CNN/MSNBC news anchor Richard Lui says the interviews were so honest they genuinely surprised him, as they revealed insights into the lives of young people across America. Troops used to look up and say, "Here come the Sky Blossoms"-paratroopers rushing to their aid. Today, there is a new generation answering that call. These are their stories. First-time director and MSNBC news anchor Richard Liu joins us for a conversation on the reason he began the project, the exploration of these families courage and determination and the historic and spiritual meaning behind the film’s title. How many hours a week do you work? The outspoken Chinese billionaire, co-founder of the online giant Alibaba supports a 9am to 9pm working day, six days a week. While European countries moves towards shorter working hours – I’m not sure they can get much shorter in France - and more time off, Jack Ma calls for a "996 system", which he describes as an opportunity and a “blessing”. Mr Ma recently wrote that without this formula, China's economy was "very likely to lose vitality and impetus". Fellow superrich tech entrepreneur Richard Liu, the boss of ecommerce giant JD.com, supports Ma’s 12-hour-a-day system. Mr Liu said decades of unprecedented economic growth in China had created more "slackers". The two entrepreneurs do not appear to care much about their employees having a life outside of work, especially when you add up to two hours uncomfortable commuting time to his “996” formula, which probably ends up closer to 7-11-6. The communist state has seen economic growth averaging 10% for more than 25 years, from the 1970s into the mid-2000s, which has since levelled out at around 6%, a rate that the U.S. and Europe would die for. In 1998, Liu founded his company that became JD.com. His work ethic is well documented, saying he would set his alarm to wake him up every two hours to offer his customers a 24-hour, service. He wrote: "JD in the last four, five years has not made any eliminations, so the number of staff has expanded rapidly, the number of people giving orders has grown and grown, while the those who are working have fallen. "Instead, the number of slackers has rapidly grown! If this carries on, JD will have no hope! And the company will only be heartlessly kicked out of the market! Slackers are not my brothers!" Following earlier business successes, including a website building company, Ma co-founded Alibaba, often referred to as “China's eBay”, in 1999 and has developed it into one of the world's biggest internet companies. In my new book, I write about Jack Ma’s story of how he went from teacher to billionaire using other people’s money (OPM) and investment to grow his business. Alibaba's market value is now approximately $490bn (£374bn), and Mr Ma's personal wealth is estimated at around $40bn. Last year, Ma said he will step down as executive chairman in the near future. Most driven business owners do not just work a 9 to 5 day, unlike their employees who do not have the same skin in the game. However, there is an argument that working long hours can be counter-productive beyond a certain point. An U.S. Department of Health and Human Services study, Overtime and Extended Work Shifts: Recent Findings on Illnesses, Injuries, and Health Behaviors, found that working beyond eight hours a day posed health risks and offered little productivity. When I was running a company with staff, the owners worked long hours, but we found that working into the night was unproductive, caused fatigue which led to more errors. Our best employees arrived on time, worked efficiently throughout the day getting their work done and left on time leaving a clear desk. Some corporations may regard employees as expendable pawns in the game of business, or dismiss burnout as an occupational hazard. The most profitable companies invariably look after their staff with good pay and conditions which bring out the best in people. Who says 8 hours is the standard working day anyway? Some people can comfortably put in a 10 or 12 hour day, especially when they are doing something they love. Many professionals, such as doctors and lawyers regularly pull 50 to 60 hour weeks. Not everyone has the same desire or stamina. Do whatever is right for you and look after your health and body, as without this you cannot work or enjoy life to the full.

Welcome to the 93rd installment of the Caixin-Sinica Business Brief, a weekly podcast that brings you the most important business stories of the week from China's top source for business and financial news. Produced by Kaiser Kuo of our Sinica Podcast, it features a business news roundup, plus conversations with Caixin reporters and editors. This week: We note that Li Jinxing 李金星, a Chinese rights lawyer who made his name fighting against wrongful convictions, is now contesting an official decision to revoke his license for “improper remarks on the internet.” We discuss a recent investigation into FedEx conducted by the Chinese government, which disputed the American courier's explanation for “misdirected” Huawei parcels, saying that it also discovered other clues that the company had violated laws and regulations. We report that Hong Kong picked the next head of its de facto central bank last week, amid social unrest that has shaken the financial hub recently. We hear that Chinese telecom giant Huawei's 5G-ready smartphone, the Mate 20 X, will formally go on sale on Aug. 16, marking the second launch of a handset supporting fifth-generation wireless technology produced by a Chinese company. We find out that Nur Bekri, the former head of China's National Energy Administration, pleaded guilty to accepting millions of dollars' worth of bribes during a court trial that makes him the latest high-profile former official to fall foul of an ongoing government crackdown on corruption. We analyze Interstellar Glory Space Technology, which has become the first private Chinese space company to successfully launch a rocket into orbit, marking an important milestone in the development of the country's commercial space industry. We chat about new materials released by the Minnesota police regarding JD.com founder and chairman Richard Liu, who was accused of rape by a Chinese student at the University of Minnesota. In addition, we talk with Tianyu Fang, reporter for Caixin Global, about Justin Sun, a cryptocurrency entrepreneur who raised eyebrows by cancelling a $4.6 million lunch with Warren Buffet.
Karl Marx's biggest meme was a labor innovation (2:42), but also an investor problem (4:48), but someone should tell South Korea (6:42) because the tech model has labor problems (11:00) and Jack Ma and Richard Liu poked the bear (13:11), all on the record.
Welcome to the 84th installment of the Caixin-Sinica Business Brief, a weekly podcast that brings you the most important business stories of the week from China's top source for business and financial news. Produced by Kaiser Kuo of our Sinica Podcast, it features a business news roundup, plus conversations with Caixin reporters and editors. This week: We discuss new data that shows China's economic growth stabilized in the first quarter of 2019, as market confidence recovered on the back of policy support and progress in Sino-U.S. trade war negotiations. We analyze a recent report that says China's stimulus measures may increase corporate debt and reverse progress made in deleveraging the economy. We hear that despite a stimulus cooling, China is still considering new subsidies to encourage household purchases of home appliances as part of a policy package designed to expand domestic consumption. We report that China's pension system is expected to run dry well before that generation retires in 2035. We note that more details have emerged in the new civil lawsuit brought against Chinese billionaire Richard Liu by the woman who accused him of rape last year. We learn that Lei Jun 雷军, the CEO of phone and home-electronics maker Xiaomi, may have received compensation worth over 330 times of that handed to Tencent's head last year. In addition, we talk with Jing Xuan Teng, reporter for Caixin Global, about the child modeling industry in China. We also chat with Doug Young, managing editor of Caixin Global, about the ecommerce titan Amazon, one of the world's biggest companies, and what's going on with it in China.
JD.Com is a value investor favorite and the 'hip' China play. Except that it had a terrible 2018, selling off more than 50% amidst China-U.S. trade negotiations and an accusation of rape against CEO and founder Richard Liu (charges not pursued). Seeking Alpha author Long Hill Road Capital argues that the company has hidden value and that the headline noise will fade. We take a closer look to see if there is value in JD's shares at this point. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
On December 12, 2018 Caroline and Andreas tried to have a normal morning. You know, do all the normal things like pack up a day bag, take a change of clothes, and hold your husband's hand uncomfortably tightly as you find your way to the hospital admissions desk. There's nothing much normal about implant surgery day. To celebrate implant surgery day, Caroline listens to something she's never heard before: audio from the pre-operative meeting with surgeon, Dr. Richard Liu. Before implant surgery, you have the opportunity to meet with the surgeon and ask questions. Caroline struggled to hear in the doctor's office with noisy ventilation (which is everywhere). For the first time since the consultation, she hears Dr. Liu and Andreas talk about the doctor's experience, the procedure, risks, and expected outcome from the cochlear implant surgery. Caroline has revelations - and questions - because, even though she was in the meeting, she didn't hear it. That's hearing loss. Join Caroline and Andreas as they celebrate one year of Caroline officially becoming My Beautiful Cyborg. And FTR, there are 9 years left on the implant warranty.

Sahra V. Nguyen: Public Policy as a Creative Spark (Ep. 163) Sahra Nguyen joined Joe Miller to chat about her new Brooklyn-based coffee venture—Nguyen Coffee Supply. Bi0 Sahra Nguyen is an award-winning filmmaker, entrepreneur, and founder/CEO of Nguyen Coffee Supply. Currently based in Brooklyn, NY, Nguyen is also the co-founder of podcast agency Listening Party and a member of the 2018 Google Next Gen Tech Policy Leaders. In 2018, Nguyen launched Nguyen Coffee Supply—the first-ever Vietnamese-American owned importer, supplier, and roaster of green coffee beans from Vietnam—as a way to showcase the diversity of single-origin arabica and robusta. She works directly with a fourth-generation Vietnamese coffee farmer from Da Lat in the Central Highlands, whose beans are certified clean and organic in Vietnam. As the daughter of Vietnamese refugees in Boston, MA, the company’s name is a nod to Nguyen’s Vietnamese heritage. Nguyen graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) with a double major in Asian American Studies and World Arts & Cultures, served as the Director of the Writing Success Program at UCLA, and published an e-book of poetry exploring themes of identity, race in America, and the Vietnamese-American experience. Building on her love of storytelling, in 2015 Nguyen started her own production company, One Ounce Gold. Her first self-produced documentary web series, “Maker's Lane," evolved into a brand new series for NBC News entitled "Self-Starters,” a show about Asian American entrepreneurs around the country. Helping launch the video channel for NBC Asian America, "Self-Starters" was nominated for the EPPY Awards and LA Press Club Awards. In mid-2016, Nguyen sold her second documentary series to NBC News, "Deported," which follows the grassroots fight to end deportation of Cambodian-Americans from the U.S. to Cambodia. "Deported" was nominated alongside CNN's Lisa Ling's "This is Life" and won the 2018 NAMIC Vision Award for Best Digital Media, Long Form. With a passion to constantly take on new challenges, Nguyen, along with three friends (all under the age of 30), opened up their first storefront business Lucy's Vietnamese Kitchen, in Bushwick, NY, in March of 2015. Within the first 9 months, Lucy's Vietnamese Kitchen won "Best Vietnamese Restaurant" by popular vote and has been featured in The New York Times, Time Out New York, Zagat, VICE, and more. Nguyen Nguyen Coffee Supply ‘Deported’ on NBC News Roundup Bombshell New York Times report reveals Facebook’s political machinations A bombshell New York Times report last week cast new light on the extent to which Facebook sought to contain accusations that it was enabling Russian meddling in the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Apparently, the company sought to promote the image that the company knew nothing about Russia’s interference while, at the same time, Mark Zuckerberg was kept in the dark. But internally, while Joel Kaplan and Cheryl Sandberg were doing their magic on the Hill working their Harvard connections, Facebook kept uncovering new evidence that Russians continued to use the platform to protect president Trump and spread propaganda in advance of the election and beyond. The New York Times also reports that the company apparently also hired lobbyists, such as Definers Public Affairs, to help the company oppose its critics. In a video-conferenced all-hands meeting on Friday, Zuckerberg defended the company saying the New York Times report was unfair and untrue, even as Cheryl Sandberg accepted responsibility for hiring Definers Public Affairs. And another report by the Wall Street Journal found that Zuckerberg himself pointed fingers at Sandberg, blaming her for the Cambridge Analytica fallout. Reuters: Russians impersonating State Department officials Reuters reports that Russian hackers have been impersonating at least one State Department official, Heather Nauert, over email trying to get other officials to download malicious code. Security firms CrowdStrike and FireEye uncovered the effort. But Russia denies involvement. Julian Assange back in spotlight Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, who played a key role releasing hacked emails during the 2016 presidential election, is back in the spotlight. George Washington University Program on Extremism researcher Seamus Hughes uncovered a court filing which found that the Department of Justice appears to be pressing sealed charges against Assange. The Hill also reports that Ecuadorian officials have grown weary of granting Assange asylum at their embassy in London since 2012. If they evict Assange, Assange could be extradited back to the U.S. The American Civil Liberties Union opposes prosecuting Assange, claiming that doing so would be a First Amendment violation. Nation’s only African American network chief to step down ABC Entertainment President Channing Dungey, who is African American, is stepping down from the company as Disney seeks to restructure the company in advance of closing on its acquisition of 21st Century Fox’s entertainment assets next year. Dungey is the only African American network head in the country, and she’s been with the company for 14 years. She’s been responsible for launching ‘Scandal’, “black-ish” and the “The Good Doctor”. But ABC has seen overall ratings decline 10%, with an 18% decline among adults 18-49 according to The Wall Street Journal. JD.com’s chief shifting focus China-based ecommerce giant JD.com’s chief has announced that he will delegate more responsibilities. It’s seen as a long-term move to groom his replacement. Richard Liu was arrested in Minnesota in September for alleged “criminal sexual misconduct” with a Chinese student at the University of Minnesota. The company’s share price has also dropped 55% since January amidst the U.S.-China trade war. Snap subpoenaed on IPO disclosures Reuters reports that the Justice Department and Securities and Exchange Commission have subpoenaed Snap to uncover whether the company downplayed competition from Instagram during its initial public offering (IPO) in March of 2017. Snap’s share price has tumbled down to $6.71 per share from its offering price of $17 per share. TV station groups settle with DOJ over ad sales collusion allegations Six tv station groups the Department of Justice alleges colluded to fix ad sales prices have settled. Sinclair, Raycom, Tribune, Meredith, Griffin, and Dreamcatcher all settled. The settlement simply requires the station groups not to share nonpublic pricing data with each other for 7 years. There are no penalties, according to Meredith. A private class action by advertisers against the station groups is still in progress.

Produced by Kaiser Kuo of our Sinica Podcast, it features a business news roundup, plus conversations with Caixin reporters and editors. This week: We discuss how China said it will control the total number of online games and new titles in operation, explore establishing an age-reminder system, and take measures to restrict the amount of time that minors spend on the games. We note that top plastic surgery app, SoYoung, has emerged as the country's latest billion-dollar startup. We hear that the number of crimes committed in Chinese schools has officially seen a two-year decline, but experts say the problem continues to be serious. We find out that Japanese automaker Suzuki announced that it is bowing out of the race for the Chinese market as its more-compact car models are increasing being left in the dust by hulking domestic rivals. We analyze the controversy caused by a mandatory-to-watch educational show produced by the Ministry of Education and state broadcaster CCTV. We chat about the most bizarre thing to possibly ever happen at a kindergarten: the principal pole-dancing in a midriff-baring outfit. In addition, we talk with Fran Wang, Economics Reporter with Caixin Global, about Chinese stocks' downward trend. We also chat with Doug Young, managing editor of Caixin Global, about the sexual misconduct allegations against Richard Liu, and the impact of those accusations on his company, JD.com. Over the weekend Richard Liu, the billionaire CEO of JD.com, was arrested in Minneapolis and later released. As shares of JD.com hit an 18-month low Matt Argersinger analyzes what we know so far and shares how big a factor Liu is in the bull case for the company. Plus we discuss Amazon hitting the $1 trillion market cap mark, Nike shares falling in the wake of its latest ad campaign, and Dunkin’ Donuts pouring salt in the wounds of football fans in Massachusetts.
Richard Liu is the Chair of the Ontario Craft Cider Association and owner of Ironwood Cider and Sunnybrook Winery. This chat was recorded while I was on tour with Ryan Monkman of Fieldbird Cider (Prince Edward County) who sponsored my cider tour of Ontario's craft cidermakers. Richard's Background Richard was born in Taiwan and his family moved to Canada when he was ten. Before buying Sunnybrook/Ironwood he worked in Asia in what he described as the corporate world. He and his wife decided to move back to Canada and start a business to provide their children with a countryside setting. Richard took over the fruit winery Sunnybrook in 2013 and began making cider under the brand Ironwood, which was also part of the original winery. The current facility at Sunnybrook/Ironwood is around 1600 square feet. During the summer of 2018 they are building a 10,000 square foot building for both the winery and cidermaking operations. Behind the tasting room is an orchard of peach trees. The plan is to replant the orchard with pears. Richard and 5 other "guys" started the Ontario Craft Cider Association in 2012. The first chairman of this association was Nick Sutcliffe of Pommies Cider Company in Caledon, Ontario. The Association current membership is around 40 makers. Enjoy!

January 29, 2018: Caroline's activation day. Caroline and Andreas talk about the experience of activation day. Caroline explains what it's like to sift through a sea of new sound she can't understand. Caroline is also aware that she is a rare case of being able to hear not just speech, but discriminate between speakers, hear lyrics in music. The pair are experiencing firsts they haven't had in decades and it leaves them laughing and near tears trying to figure what it all means. Gratitude, confusion, astonishment. After 30 years of being deaf, Caroline says this is her golden ticket moment, but better. If it doesn't make sense don't worry. It's day one. Andreas and Caroline will revisit things when they're not living on adrenaline. Hello World. Caroline can hear you now.
It's December 12: surgery day. After a lifetime of declining hearing, Caroline is going to receive a CI532 cochlear implant. We have a talk in car on the way to the hospital, and then simply let Caroline's surgeon, Dr. Richard Liu, describe the cochlear implant procedure, the risks, techniques, and what he loves about doing the procedure. Today is the day Caroline becomes My Beautiful Cyborg. http://mybeautifulcyborg.com
