Dave Hill - Feral Men with Guitars: Why Dave Will Never Get a "Real Job"

Dave Hill seamlessly blends virtuosic guitar playing with razor-sharp comedy, creating an entirely unique performance experience that defies categorization. In this captivating conversation with Greg Koch, Dave reveals the unexpected path that led him from his Cleveland roots as a rock musician to becoming a multifaceted comedian, author, and performer in New York City. The heart of Dave's artistic evolution came when he discovered audiences found genuine humor in his guitar prowess. "When I realized that people were laughing at guitar solos—not in a mocking way—I started doing things like tapping," Dave explains. This revelation transformed his approach, allowing him to stretch 10 minutes of material into 20 while "getting laughs in different ways" and developing his signature style of berating his backing musicians between impressive solos. What makes Dave's performances particularly fascinating is his "Chuck Berry style" approach to working with local musicians. Often meeting his backing band just hours (or sometimes minutes) before showtime, he transforms this unpredictability into comedic gold. Whether performing with legendary musicians like Benmont Tench from Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers or with drummers who "own drums at best," Dave embraces the chaos as part of his art form. The conversation drifts through numerous fascinating detours, from their shared Catholic upbringings to the unpredictable nature of social media virality. Dave shares stories about opening for Tenacious D in arenas, writing four books, and crafting the theme song for Last Week Tonight with John Oliver with his band Valley Lodge. Through it all, his creative philosophy remains refreshingly simple: "You really can only entertain yourself... anytime you're thinking 'what do people want,' that's not part of the equation."Follow Dave on social media for his hilarious "fake commercials" and check out his band Valley Lodge for a taste of his musical side. As Dave puts it: "I'm feral, this is what I do... now I just have to ride it out until I die, because that's the only option really."

ED NOTE: Here's my recent episode with Benmont Tench, keyboardist for Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Mike Campbell doesn't have songwriting rules. He doesn't need any because he's always creating. "I'm probably writing as I'm talking to you," Campbell told me. In fact, Campbell's problem is that he can't stop coming up with ideas and sometimes wishes he could dial it back a bit. But that's what happens when you keep a guitar next to every chair in your house. Not just in every room, but next to every chair. Besides his work as Tom Petty's guitarist and collaborator/co-writer in The Heartbreakers, Mike Campbell has worked with countless others. He co-wrote "The Boys of Summer" and "The Heart of the Matter" by Don Henley, and he's worked with Bob Dylan, Stevie Nicks, George Harrison, Aretha Franklin, to name a few. After Tom Petty's passing, Campbell formed The Dirty Knobs. Their latest album Vagabonds, Virgins, & Misfits is out now. Campbell has a terrific new memoir out, Heartbreaker, co-written with Ari Surdoval (their editor, Ben Schafer, was also my editor at Hachette Books for my book Desolation: A Heavy Metal Memoir by Mark Morton with Ben Opipari.)

I hope you've been enjoying the last few weeks of the Talkhouse feed as we've been throwing some new shows your way. If you haven't checked out Summer Album/Winter Album yet, please do, and look out for new episodes of Nobody's Ever Asked Me That, featuring my esteemed colleague Nick Dawson, in the coming months, too. Today's episode of the Talkhouse Podcast features a pair of incredible songwriters in a lovely chat about the thing they love to do the most: make music. We've got Benmont Tench and Taylor Goldsmith. Tench, in case you don't recognize the name, is a founding member of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, and a guy who helped shape rock music for decades with the distinctive sound and feel of his piano, organ, and much more. Tench made music with Petty from the time they were 11 years old until Petty's death in 2017, but he's also contributed to songs and albums by a dizzying array of other artists, too, from Roy Orbison to Fiona Apple to U2. As you'll hear in this conversation, Tench is always playing music because he loves it so damn much. He recently released his second-ever solo album, The Melancholy Season, and it includes some playing from his friend Taylor Goldsmith. Check out the title track from The Melancholy Season right here. Goldsmith is best known as the singer of the band Dawes, whose Laurel Canyon-inspired folk-rock has been caressing our ears for the past 15 years or so. Dawes has gone through some personnel changes in the past couple of years, paring back to Goldsmith and his brother Griffin and releasing a new album, the fittingly titled Oh Brother just last year. Both Goldsmith brothers were hit hard by the Los Angeles fires, losing their homes and the majority of their beloved instruments. But Goldsmith, as you'll hear, is taking it in stride. In this conversation, Tench and Goldsmith talk about, again, their love of music: Tench even recalls telling his daughter that he loves her more than he loves music—the highest compliment he can pay. Both of these guys are pretty recent fathers, too, which comes up. And of course they can't get around talking about the genius of Tom Petty—and the accidental genius of Heartbreakers' guitarist Mike Campbell's shirt. Listen and you'll understand. Enjoy. Chapters: 0:00 – Intro 2:24 – Start of the chat Thanks for listening to the Talkhouse Podcast and thanks to Benmont Tench and Taylor Goldsmith for chatting. Benmont Tench is the keyboardist and a founding member of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. That's reason enough to listen to this podcast. I've interviewed other icons—Duff McKagan, Johnny Marr, and Jerry Harrison, to name a few—and they all have one common thread: a voracious appetite for art in all its forms. They consume books, movies, paintings, poetry, sculptures, you name it. Artists with longevity know that to create art, you have to constantly consume it.Tench is no exception. “The more I read, the more chance I have to get inspired because I'm opening myself up to language. But I'm inspired by all art; I'm even inspired by looking out the window. It all comes in, and it all shows up in my writing,” he says.  When I asked Tench if he favors any certain medium, his response was simple: “From Milton to Milton Bradley.” He's also the first songwriter I've interviewed to cite both Manet and the Steve Martin movie Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid as inspiration.Tench's solo album The Melancholy Season is out now. Send us a text

The Tom Petty Project

Airport is a tight little bundle of keyboard virtuosity from Benmont Tench with a lazy, groove-soaked accompaniment from Howie Epstein and Chris Trujillo in the rhythm section. This piece is hugely interesting in two different, very interesting ways. First of all, I'm pretty sure (given the credits in the album liner notes) that Tom didn't play on it. Second, given that the melodic contributions would almost certainly have come spontaneously from the mind and fingers of Benmont Tench, it's really curious to me that he isn't at least co-credited on this one!If you want to check out the song ahead of the episode, you can find the official video here: https://youtu.be/P5RbW82PVqsIf you want to check out Benmont Tench's fantastic new album, The Melancholy Season, you can find that here : https://music.youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_kRJEygrs-WJ4ZzS39uwMLTJSUGArR8qDoDon't forget to follow me on social media, like, subscribe, and please, leave a rating if you like the show.Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/thetompettyprojectBluesky: https://bsky.app/profile/tompettyproject.bsky.socialInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thetompettyprojectYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@thetompettyprojectThreads: https://www.threads.net/@thetompettyprojectAll music, including the theme song, provided by my very best friend Randy Woods. In celebration of the new Deluxe Edtion of Long After Dark, the fifth studio album by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, we take a detailed look at how it was made. After Tom Petty connected with Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench to form Mudcrutch in Gainesville, Florida in 1970, they ended up relocating to Los Angeles. There they were able to sign a deal with Shelter Records, but Mudcrutch broke up soon after, leaving Petty under contract as a solo artist. Campbell and Tench began playing in a band with fellow Floridians, Ron Blair and Stan Lynch and they reconnected with Petty to form Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. Their self-titled debut album was released in 1976 with You're Gonna Get It following in 1978, and they built up a following in the UK especially. For their third album, they teamed up with producer Jimmy Iovine and spent many months recording what became Damn the Torpedoes. The album ended up being a breakthrough for the band, giving them mainstream success for the first time. They continued working with Iovine for their fourth album, Hard Promises. At this point, Ron Blair left the band so they brought in Howie Epstein on bass. They began working on their fifth album, which was produced by Iovine again. Long After Dark was eventually released in 1982. In this episode, drummer Stan Lynch describes where the band was at in this period when they had achieved their dream of success and were trying to figure out where to go next musically. Lead guitarist Mike Campbell explains his collaboration process with Petty for several songs where he would present a fleshed out demo for Petty to write lyrics to. Adria Petty describes being 8 years old when this record came out and shares her memories of this time when her father was writing from darker and more personal place than before. Producer and archivist Ryan Ulyate talks about the country leaning outtakes from these sessions and how Petty left high quality material off the record as he focused on structuring a cohesive album. With Long After Dark (Deluxe Edition), we get a chance to hear an alternative direction for the album that presages the more acoustic songs that Petty would embrace in his later career. From a dark and edgy sound to the record to Petty viewing songwriting as a job to experimenting musically with drum loops and synthesizers to engineer Shelly Yakus being an unsung hero to the band coming to the end of their work with Jimmy Iovine to welcoming the new format of MTV with the “You Got Lucky” video, we'll hear the stories of how the record came together.

Born in New York City and raised in the Caribbean as Richard Gerstein - Richard T. Bear boasts a career that spans more than 40 years, one that led to a string of acclaimed solo albums and collaborations with a number of influential icons, including Al Kooper, Stephen Stills, former Rascals Gene Cornish and Dino Danelli, Kiss, Pat Benatar and many more. He has shared stages with artists such as Dave Mason, Mick Fleetwood, the Doobie Brothers, Richie Havens and Odetta. T. Bear penned "Love and Pain," a track found on Take Me Home, one of Cher's most successful albums and also tallied several hits on his own, including the single "Sunshine Hotel" from his debut album Red, Hot and Blue. He has appeared on a number of recordings including CSN's Southern Cross, Billy Squier's Tale of the Tape and The Blues Brothers Soundtrack album. After taking some time to focus on his own sobriety, T. Bear became an early activist helping others with addiction. His self-imposed hiatus lasted nearly three decades, and now T Bear is back with two striking new releases, Fresh Bear Tracks and The Way of the World, his first studio albums in 25+ years. Richard is a distinctive singer and talented keyboard player. His latest albums feature a host of special guests. From Stephen Stills, Robby Krieger, Edgar Winter, Walter Trout, to former Paul McCartney & Wings members Laurence Juber and Denny Seiwell and The Heartbreakers' Benmont Tench. His latest album, The Way of The World, was written and recorded as the world emerged from the pandemic. It boasts a stunning set of 13 original songs. Musically, it's a stirring melodic mix of blues, rock n roll, Americana, and roots. T. Bear's first album spawned the single “Sunshine Hotel.” A remix of the song climbed to #4 on the world dance charts before becoming the dance staple that it remains today. Richard has appeared on numerous recordings by iconic artists including Crosby, Stills and Nash's Southern Cross, The Blues Brothers Soundtrack, Richie Havens Mixed Bag II, Kiss members Gene Simmons and Peter Criss' solo ventures, as well as Toby Beau's hit single My Angel Baby. As a soloist T Bear found his initial inspiration in the sounds of the British Invasion. At age 13 he was writing his own songs.  An early break came when he was working at Manny's Music in New York City when Hot Tuna's Jorma Kaukonen and Jack Casady stopped in and hear him improvising on piano. They were impressed enough to ask him to sit in with them during a Hot Tuna show at the famed Fillmore East. He worked for a time as Carly Simon's road manager and opened shows for the likes of Jeff Beck and Richie Havens before moving to Los Angeles.  In 1983, he took a lengthy hiatus from making music to get his personal life in order before returning to action in 2017. Fast forward to the present and T Bear is so excited about the new album.  As he puts it, “Making The Way of the World was like getting a new pair of glasses. I see everything more clearly and in focus around me. These are songs that made me think and dream. It's an oasis for the mind.” Meet Richard T Bear this week as he unravels his incredible story of survival and comeback against all odds. I hope you really enjoy this episode.

I always consider this one of Tom's great ambiguous lyrics. Jaan Uhelzski writes that “Petty seems to be nervously taking stock, weighing options, reminiscing, trying to keep his incipient anxiety at bay and trying to hold on to a few last remnants of his former life.” and Benmont Tench says “It's another song that sounds like it's all about whoever, but these songs were about him." and whatever meaning you layer on afterwards, I do love that Mike Campbell makes the following observation on this song; “You reflect on it after the fact, and maybe you can read things into it, but in the moment you're just putting your nose to the grindstone."Today's guest conversation sees the return of the uniquely brilliant and inventive musician and Youtuber, Ivan Anderson. I have an Ivan Anderson Returns bonus episode coming out this Friday for you too, as we had a massively free-ranging conversation about his recent collaboration and upcoming new album, as well as touching on Guns n Roses, Van Halen, Queen, and all kinds of other bands and topics. In this episode of The Bandwich Tapes, I am thrilled and honored to sit down with the incredible Luke Bulla, one of my all-time favorite instrumentalists and vocalists. Our conversation is a deep dive into his remarkable musical journey and the experiences that have shaped his illustrious career.Luke's life has been steeped in music from an early age. At age four, he began touring and singing with his family band and took up the fiddle at seven. His prodigious talent quickly became evident as he went on to win the National Fiddle Contest in Weiser, Idaho, six times in his respective age categories. At sixteen, he made history by becoming the youngest winner of the Grand Champion division. By age ten, Luke had already made a mark at Nashville's Grand Master Fiddle Championship as the youngest top-ten finalist. In the spring of 1999, Luke moved to Nashville, diving headfirst into a full-time music career. His early years in Tennessee were marked by his stint with Ricky Skaggs' band, Kentucky Thunder, where his exceptional fiddle playing earned him his first Grammy Award. Following this, he joined the John Cowan Band. He performed and recorded with a host of renowned artists including Brandi Carlile, Jim Lauderdale, Darrell Scott, Alison Krauss, Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, Edgar Meyer, Bela Fleck, and many more. His collaborations read like a who's who of the music industry, featuring names such as Bryan Sutton, Kevin Costner & Modern West, Shawn Colvin, Tony Rice, Chris Thile, Peter Rowan, Patty Griffin, Glen Phillips, Rodney Crowell, and Earl Scruggs.Luke was a perennial instructor at Mark O'Connor's fiddle camps during his early years in Nashville. Alongside his long-time friend Casey Driessen, Luke founded the band Wisechild, which toured briefly with John Mayer and Counting Crows. He also played a pivotal role in the band W.P.A. (Works Progress Administration), a collaboration that included notable members like Sean Watkins, Glen Phillips, Sara Watkins, Benmont Tench, Pete Thomas, Greg Leisz, and Davey Faragher. In 2009, Luke released a solo EP featuring a stellar lineup of musicians, including Jerry Douglas, Sam Bush, Bela Fleck, and Aoife O'Donovan. That same year, he joined Lyle Lovett's Large Band and toured full-time with them until 2023.In 2015, Luke co-founded the Bluegrass/Americana record label, Pure Music | Nashville, with music and business executive John L. Heithaus. The label released his LP, Who Loves You Better, in May 2016. Recorded at Zac Brown's Southern Ground Nashville studio and produced by Grammy winner Bryan Sutton, the LP showcases Luke's extraordinary musical talent.Join us for an enriching discussion as we explore Luke's diverse musical influences, his approach to songwriting, and the incredible journey that has led him to where he is today. This episode is a celebration of his enduring contribution to music and his unwavering passion for his craft.Music from the Episode:Luke Bulla - Temperance Reel (Luke Bulla/Guy Clark/J.R.Stuart)Luke Bulla - Who Loves You Better (Feat: Sarah Jarosz) (Lyle Lovett)Luke Bulla - On the Turning Away (David Gilmour and Anthony Moore)Luke Bulla - Tie Me Down and Set Me Free (Luke Bulla/J.R.Stuart)Thank you for listening! Toad the Wet Sprocket is an American alternative rock band formed in Santa Barbara, California, in 1986. The band at the time consisted of vocalist/guitarist Glen Phillips, guitarist Todd Nichols, bassist Dean Dinning, and drummer Randy Guss, who stopped touring in 2017 and left the band in 2020. Guss was replaced by drummer Josh Daubin, who had been supporting them as their drummer on recent tours. They had chart success in the 1990s with singles that included "Walk on the Ocean," "All I Want," "Something's Always Wrong," "Fall Down," and "Good Intentions."  The band broke up in 1998 to pursue other projects. Although re-united periodically for short tours. In December 2010, the band announced their official reunion as a full-time working band and started writing songs for their first studio album of new material. That album would become New Constellation, followed by The Architect of the Ruin.   Toad the Wet Sprocket's most recent full-length album, Starting Now, was released on August 27, 2021. As a solo artist, Glen Phillips released Abulum in 2000.  In 2004, he released a long-awaited collaboration with Nickel Creek under the Mutual Admiration Society. The self-titled album was recorded in 2000 and featured songs written by Phillips alone and collaborative efforts with Sean and Sara Watkins, released on Sugar Hill Records. In 2005, Phillips released the critically acclaimed Winter Pays For Summer. The album included the radio single "Duck and Cover," but Phillips and the label would part ways due to creative differences.  A compilation of six outtakes from that album was published as an EP titled Unlucky 7, the first track ("The Hole") featured in the second episode of the AMC television series Breaking Bad. Phillips released his third proper solo album, Mr. Lemons, in the spring of 2006.  In January 2008, it was reported by Billboard that a new supergroup had formed. The ensemble gathered in Jim Scott's recording studio, and by September 2008, the collective settled upon the name Works Progress Administration (W.P.A.). In its octet configuration, WPA features Phillips, Sean Watkins (guitar), his sister Sara Watkins (fiddle), Benmont Tench (piano), Luke Bulla (fiddle), Greg Leisz (various), Pete Thomas (drums), and Davey Faragher (bass). The group also performs as a quintet featuring Phillips, Watkins, Bulla, and bassist Sebastian Steinberg. The results of the 2008 recording sessions were released as an album on September 15, 2009. Phillips has also completed an album with Neilson Hubbard and Garrison Starr under the band name, Plover, released on October 23, 2008. In 2009, Phillips was involved in the soundtrack of the film Imagine That. He covers The Beatles' song "I'll Follow the Sun." On April 5, 2018, Glen Phillips signed with Compass Records Group. His 2016 album, Swallowed by the New, was followed by There Is So Much Here in 2021. Keith & Geoff welcomed Toad the Wet Sprocket frontman Glen Phillips to Thunderlove Studio and had a delightful conversation about, but not limited to, disco, hippies, and mental health.  Go figure.   Toad the Wet Sprocket is hitting the road this summer. Jonelle Mosser has worked with some of the most amazing talent in the music business. Industry veterans such as B.B. King, Trisha Yearwood, Etta James, Wynonna Judd, Rodney Crowell, Vince Gill, Waylon Jennings, Patty Smyth, AJ Croce, Levon Helm and Bruce Cockburn, have shared the stage or the studio with her. Jonelle has also worked on numerous solo projects over the span of her career, beginning in 1996 with her compilation album of Texas singer-songwriter Townes Van Zandt, whom she first met in 1978. That debut album was a 1996 compilation of Townes covers called "Around Townes”.  That particular project brought her to the attention of Bonnie Raitt producer Don Was. Don was so supportive that he soon put a band together with Jonell as lead singer. He rounded up A-listers such as guitarist Mark Goldenberg from Jackson Browne's band, keyboardist Benmont Tench from Tom Petty's Heartbreakers, and Beatles drummer Ringo Starr. They recorded 7 songs and were named the New Maroons. They played Farm Aid in Ames IA, but the recordings were shelved because other projects took precedence. Jonelle did go on to record a rendition of the Supremes' "Stop in the Name of Love”, which later landed on the soundtrack to the 1998 film "Hope Floats”,  starring Sandra Bullock and Harry Connick Jr. She's currently working on new projects, hoping to release them in 2023. www.jonellemosser.com The Business Side of Music ™ © 2022 Lotta Dogs Productions LLC Showrunner and Executive Producer Emeritus: Tom Sabella Producer and Host (the guy who has a face for podcasting): Bob Bender Management Representation: Chuck Thompson for Thompson Entertainment Group, LLC Co-Producer - Audio/Video Editor (the man behind the curtain): Mark Sabella Director of Video and Continuity (the brains of the entire operation): Deborah Halle Marketing and Social Media (all knowing): Sarah Fleshner for 362 Entertainment All Around Problem Solver (and Mental Health Therapist for us): Connie Ribas Recorded inside what could be an old beat up Airstream Trailer located somewhere on what's left of Music Row in Nashville TN (Man we sure do miss Noshville, and the Longhorn Steakhouse) Mixed and Mastered at Music Dog Studios in Nashville, TN Editing and Post at Midnight Express Studio located in Olian, NY Production Sound Design: Keith Stark Voice Over and Promo: Lisa Fuson Special Thanks to the creator and founder of the podcast, Tom Sabella, along with Traci Snow for producing and hosting over 100 episodes of the original "Business Side of Music" podcast and trusting us to carry on their legacy. Singer, songwriter and saxophonist Curtis Stigers tells us true stories with a cast of characters including Van Morrison, Eric Clapton and Bob Dylan. A fan from way back (“Bob is the perfect creation. He's an art form in himself”), his jazzy cover versions include Things Have Changed (“people go nuts for that song. Their heads explode”). A committed conversationalist with a huge wealth of musical knowledge, Curtis has strong opinions about Shawn Colvin, Jim Croce, The Carter Family, Neil Diamond, Jimmie Rodgers, Frank Sinatra, Bertolt Brecht and Larry Klein (who produced both Joni Mitchell and Curtis). His cover of Don't Think Twice, It's All Right “always lights up the room”, he says. We feel the same about Mr. Stigers.Born in Los Angeles, Curtis Stigers grew up in Boise, Idaho. His interest in music began as a teen when he played in punk and blues bands. He moved to New York to pursue rock music but attracted label attention as the saxophonist/vocalist of a jazz trio, signing a deal with Arista and releasing his self-titled first album in 1991 (the multi-platinum album included the Billboard Top Ten single I Wonder Why). He contributed a cover of (What's So Funny 'Bout) Peace, Love and Understanding to the soundtrack of The Bodyguard, which spent 20 consecutive weeks at Number 1 on the Billboard album chart. Curtis's third album, Brighter Days, featured appearances by Jackson Browne and Benmont Tench. From 2001, he began to concentrate on jazz albums, including Real Emotional and Lost In Dreams. In 2012, he released the country-tinged album Let's Go Out Tonight, featuring covers of songs by artists like Steve Earle and Richard Thompson. One More For The Road, a live salute to the Sinatra At The Sands album was another big success. Scot and Jeff discuss Rilo Kiley/Jenny Lewis with Helaine Olen. Introducing the Band: Your hosts Scot Bertram (@ScotBertram) and Jeff Blehar (@EsotericCD) are with guest Helaine Olen. Helaine is an opinion writer at the Washington Post. Find her on Twitter at @HelaineOlen. Helaine's Music Pick: Rilo Kiley/Jenny Lewis So it turns out Hannah Nefler from Troop Beverly Hills and Ronnie Pinsky from “Salute Your Shorts” aren't played by just talented child actors after all.  Those actors, Jenny Lewis and Blake Sennett, went on to form one-half of Rilo Kiley and were responsible for writing the music and lyrics for the band. And it all started out because actor/comedian Dave Foley offered to pick up the tab for recording a group of demos. While Rilo Kiley never sold a ton of albums, they became a successful and artistically interesting group that made waves in the indie rock community.  Jenny Lewis began her solo career before her band officially ended its run, with the superb Rabbit Fur Coat, released in 2006. Rilo Kiley produced one more “grab for the brass ring” album, titled Under the Blacklight. By that point, though, it was clear Lewis' talent meant more solo albums were on the way. Rooted in a California/Laurel Canyon sound, Lewis rarey repeats herself on record. Her voice has matured over the years to become a true musical weapon. Many of her friends, like Beck, Elvis Costello, Jonathan Rice, Benmont Tench, and others pop up on songs here and there.  Whether you're new to this music or simply taking a deeper dive, be more adventurous with us and listen to the Political Beats take on Rilo Kiley & Jenny Lewis.
