039 - When the Psychology Professor Met the Minister: The Journey of Dave Roberts

Our Dead Dads

In this episode, I had the honor of speaking with Dave Roberts, a man whose journey through profound loss has reshaped his entire perspective on life, grief, and spirituality. Dave lost his daughter, Jeannine, at just 18 years old to cancer, and his path toward healing has been filled with deep reflection, transformative experiences, and a unique understanding of continued bonds with those who have passed. His story is one of resilience and reconnection, as he shares how he found a way to maintain his relationship with his daughter beyond the physical world.Dave's journey led him to explore the intersection of psychology and spirituality, which became a cornerstone of his healing. He co-authored a book, When the Psychology Professor Met the Minister, delving into the power of belief, critical thinking, and how we can integrate different perspectives without abandoning our core values. He speaks about the powerful role of synchronicities, dream visits, and numerology in his ongoing relationship with Janine. His experiences remind us that love and connection don't have to end with physical death.Throughout our conversation, Dave shared wisdom gained from his own grief journey, his work as a psychology professor, and the many students and people he has guided through loss. We also talked about the importance of honoring our emotions, embracing continued bonds, and challenging rigid thinking around death. Dave's insights offer a new way to look at loss—not as an end, but as a transformation of the relationship itself. And if you stick with it, like everything else, they come to look forward to it as their quality time.” – Keely NgAbout Keely Ng: Keely Ng has been in marketing and sales for over 20 years. She begins by asking how Larry got into RC cars.He began in his hometown of Schenectady NY with a friend of his. He began with Nitro cars; this was in 2011; he explained that a Nitro car runs off Nitrous. He then went to gas then electric. He went from a Mad Max RC car to a Tesla RC car is how Patrick explains it.Janet asks about the batteries and Larry explains that per battery the cost can be $489 for a pro that competes. Larry shows his battery and car hook up; it is the Arrma 6s Felony. This is a 1/7th scale RC car. It goes 80miles an hour out of the box. He has clocked it at 73mph. He shows them the car without the body on it and makes Janet dizzy as he turns his camera back and forth. The batteries are a twin battery pack. Larry refers to them as “LiPo’s”, they are 5000 milli-amp, G2, 11.1 volt, 50C 3S. Larry explains that is just to run it, the speed comes from the motor, a Spektrum Firma 2050K-v motor, he has knobby tires that came with it, they can be upgraded; the front tires are different from the rear tires. This set up is on road but could be used off road, probably causing damage to the car. He talks about running without the body and the damage it would cause. It comes with a launch control like dirt bikes, the talk turns to RC helicopters and planes briefly. He wants to go to events because he can draw a crowd when he drifts the car and smokes the tires. It is AWD, very quick, like a miniature Tesla, with the look of an old muscle car.Full Podcast Show Notes Available Here:  Episode #014Don't Forget to Vote in our giveaway Here:  GiveawayTo Support the Show go Here: Support

This was the audio from my first video podcast with a great, talented group of guys from the ELECTRIC CITY CHOROUS in Schenectady, NY.   Of course this was recorded during the ongoing pandemic, so there is no way to get them to harmonize in sync during a Zoom call, which was disconcerting, but we had a great conversation nonetheless.    How do you keep a chorous going when they're all disconnected like this?  We also get into the history of the group, their techniques, and at the end they tell you how you can get involved if by chance you would like to join.   Their website is http://www.electriccitychorous.net and they are @electriccitychorous on Facebook  My website, btw is http://www.hirerichie.com   I am @richiephillips on Facebook  This podcast is done on my own time and on my own dime.  If you would like to sponsor it, I would definitely welcome any help.  Please feel free to email me at Richie1077@gmail.com for details.

How might tried and true theories of learning help us navigate the uncertainties of remote and hybrid learning models? How can backwards design help teachers spend more time providing support and feedback to students in remote environments? How might we strike the appropriate balance between synchronous and asynchronous learning when planning interpersonal, interpretive and presentational communication activities? We discuss these questions and much more in our second conversation with Dr. Karen Gregory and Dr. Gretchen Oliver from Clarkson University in New York. We released our first interview in March 2020 as schools began closing as a result of the global pandemic. We are grateful to bring Karen and Gretchen back to find out what they have learned since then and what they are planning as they prepare new and experienced teachers to work with English learners. Gretchen Oliver is the Assistant Director of TESOL programs and an Assistant Professor in the Education Department at Clarkson University, Capital Region Campus, in Schenectady NY. She has prior experience as a K- 12 French teacher and taught English as Foreign Language in Grenoble, France. Dr. Oliver's research focuses on teaching STEM to English learners, teacher education and professional development, and ESOL-focused leadership practices. Karen Gregory is the Director of TESOL programs and an Assistant Professor in the Education Department at Clarkson University, Capital Region Campus, in Schenectady NY. She has prior experience as a K- 12 Spanish and ENL teacher. Hello listeners, Today's guest is Becky Daniels the Executive Director of Discover Schenectady. Major industrial cities, like Schenectady, saw explosive growth in jobs, and economic activity in the 1950s through the late 1960s. When those jobs went to lower-cost labor markets or got automated in some form - these regions went through a tough patch, but now, thanks to the efforts of individuals like Becky, many of these regions are back and growing. We discuss some of the entrepreneurial efforts Becky has employed to help Schenectady grow and prosper again. You can find more information about Becky's efforts here: Discover Schenectady We love to hear from our listeners, send us your questions, comments, and suggestions at bela.and.mike@gmail.com - we will answer your questions in a future episode.
