18WT #088 - Aerodynamics In Big Rigs And Trailers!

Episode #088:Well folks it is Halloween and here they go again! The only holiday probably more suited for these two than this one must be April Fool's Day. For the two of them to just have one of those “normal conversations” that you hear people talk about, is highly unlikely to ever happen. So please do not hold your breath waiting for it to happen.Today once they get down to brass tactics, they are loopdy-dooping about how the look of semi-trucks have changed. They do not seem to be able to just have a conversation without going off into left field. There is talk about “The best of the best of the best, Sir”, (Men in Black) Taco Bell, Taco Tuesday, “Swing Batter Batter” (Ferris Buehler's' Day Off) and just their normal everyday goofiness. But it by no means defines their knowledge or abilities. Especially in the Trucking Industry! They go through the evolution of the aerodynamics of both the truck and the trailer. When it comes to the looks of the Rig, it is not necessarily the best looking, in their opinions. However, the direction that Rigs are going is definitely better for fuel economy and aerodynamics. For looks, they both seem to like those classic long flat nose Big Rigs looked. Like the Classic Freightliners, Peterbilt's, Western Star's and all the other Beautiful Rigs of the past. By past they both seem to feel that means pre-Y2K.From there they start talking about the attachments on the rear of trailers. Some of the rese arch that Janet did sounds very amusing in an accident-causing sort of way! Like large, long balloon-cones that inflate with movement and deflate when the trailer stops moving. And there lies the problem as they say. Something about dragging a Volkswagen for a few hundred miles that got caught in the balloon. Or being caught going through the tollbooths on major highways. And the discussion and comparison goes on with talk about apples and watermelons being the same as some of the Rigs out there. No matter how you stack it up, these two have their moments where they talk facts “just the facts Ma'am” (Dragnet, basically). But it is rare that they just talk numbers, usually they keep things lively, upbeat, and entertaining. And let's not get them going about the weight of electric trucks, weight, ruts in the road, and more! So, if you like this episode and have your own story to tell, then don't forget to go to Formerly known as twitter to continue the conversation!Full podcast show notes available here:  https://www.18wheeltalk.com/e88Southwest Truck Driver TrainingSHIFT YOUR CAREER INTO HIGH GEARTRUCK DRIVER & CDL TRAININGLifetime job placement assistance.Individualized truck driver training.Financial aid for CDL training programs. You choose training in manual or automatic shifting trucks!! Episode #087:While there was obviously research done for this episode it really does seem to be Story time end to end. The funniest part seems to be that Patrick wanted to do a giveaway. Because in about the first ten minutes Janet dropped the F-bomb. And that is just not her under normal circumstances. So, if you want to hear what made her drop that F-bomb, go take a listen. In the beginning the start with Bona-fide story time. Each telling about that one load they know about that should never have ended up the way that it did. And that my friends is why Janet dropped the F-bomb. Laugh out loud funny, but true, she did it so fast she caught herself by surprise! And Patricks' reaction was well, priceless to say the least. Because he is the one who usually swears and here she goes right off the bat swearing. He had a field day teasing her and the look he gave her! So, after their story time, they get on with the episode.Well, what actually brought this episode into fruition was a simple online story about a load that got stuck down in Louisiana. It sounds simple enough, at least when you put it that way. But then when you actually dig deeper into what it is and how it happened. And more importantly, all of the steps that got missed to make the load get stuck. That is why it is so darn interesting! So, if you'd like to know the details about what was missed in the hauling of this $30 million dollar load, then you have come to the right place. Because our hero's (makes them sound really good, doesn't it?), go from start to end on what went wrong and why. They give you all the little details, what happened, why it happened, the entire kit and caboodle worth of it! So, if you like this episode and have your own story to tell, then don't forget to go to Formerly known as twitter to continue the conversation!Full podcast show notes available here:  https://www.18wheeltalk.com/e87Southwest Truck Driver TrainingSHIFT YOUR CAREER INTO HIGH GEARTRUCK DRIVER & CDL TRAININGLifetime job placement assistance.Individualized truck driver training.Financial aid for CDL training programs. You choose training in manual or automatic shifting trucks!! Episode #086:Where do you put your foot down with clutches, Chicken Pants? Manual or Automatic? Preferences drivers? So, with their normal elegance and grace, our rabble rousers began today's show with something that only they understood. So, they had to explain what the term "Chicken-Pants" means and where it came from. Why, you might be asking yourself? Well, because that is how these two roll. So, once they got that out of their systems, which took a little bit of time. They got on with the show, which was about transmissions and preferences, not Chicken Pants.  So, the two of them definitely have their preferences and have driven both manual and automatic semis'.They give an honest talk about the advantages and disadvantages of both types for companies as well as owner-operators.  You would think it is a no-brainer, but it is not an easy answer. While they inform you about the changes over the years and the perks of each.  All the while really getting into the discussion about shifting gears, they still manage to keep the humor, the stories, and the chemistry very high. And as always, they hope you enjoy the show! Episode #085:In this 18 Wheel Talk rewind we take a look back at episode 28 about families and the ever changing roles "post pandemic" from July of 2021. We sure did have fun making this episode and we sure hope you enjoy the laughter too.Amidst the usual shenanigans, our hosts talk about families and how they really got together and multi-generational households becoming a thing again. They laugh a bit about how it would be if all of Patrick, his siblings, all of their kids, and pets' all moved into one household together. Their parents would need visiting hours to keep the sanity.Patrick is all tangled up in his microphone and has it all over the place and swearing about it. A few jokes about business up top and party down below as they get going on Episode 28 as Patrick swears for the second time already. He considers moving his mic to be hanging from above like a disc jockey does. Somehow this brings on singing. And then they get down to a little business as they discuss the definition of the function of families in America. Janet continues with the definition which is, the physical maintenance and care of family members; addition of new members through adoption or procreation (let's have sex people, not just hallways sex); the socialization of children (that's a rant for later on); social control of its family members; production, consumption and distribution of goods and services; and affective nurturance (love). You gotta love your family Janet says. Patrick asks who? He says he is not the only one who asks that question. Janet replies with she is....Full podcast show notes available here:  https://www.18wheeltalk.com/e85Southwest Truck Driver TrainingSHIFT YOUR CAREER INTO HIGH GEARTRUCK DRIVER & CDL TRAININGLifetime job placement assistance.Individualized truck driver training.Financial aid for CDL training programs. You choose training in manual or automatic shifting trucks!! They go through the fact that you got to be in it to win it and how Janet wants to call it the big Smackdown! They get into the subject with a bit of a deep dive with the usual jokes and puns between them. However, they do bring up some great places in their discussion about truck stops and what they looked for in a place to park at night. As the laughs and memories go back and forth between them, you can tell the differences between regional and long-haul restrictions. As well as the restrictions that different companies put on drivers with the type of fuel cards they give them, reimbursement restrictions and all.You can tell that this walk down memory lane was a good one and still should be helpful. Episode #076:So, at the beginning of today's show, Janet was all excited to be talking about gadgets and how people always seem to go back to calling her the gadget lady. She does seem to love them. Add that to the obvious love of cooking she has, and today's episode has her like a kid in a candy shop.Patrick manages to bring her back around to the subject of today's show. They start out talking about “back in the day” Of course they do! They do seem to manage to come back to that conversation every now and then. Because Lord knows these two love story time and never manage to bring that bell, they keep promising the audience. In their reminiscing they do bring up some great pointers. Things like when you first start out over the road you are going to be broke for a while. And ways to overcome the hurdles that you are going to see. When they finally do get down to the business of today's episode, there is still some reminiscing. But mostly to compare what worked for each of them and what didn't.It is very plain that they are both coffee lovers, and that is where the, shall we say separation of church and state begins. Patrick when driving was more of a leftover meal from home the first few days then move on over to cold cuts a few days. Before he had to get creative. Whereas Janet was more of a bring precut, prepped items to cook while on the road. Pretty much from the day she got on the road. They go over all of their recommendations for products and how to safely hook them up and strap them down. They each obviously have their own favorites. But they did seem to agree on the one item that is a little combo of a mini oven, coffee pot and griddle. Or as Janet referred to it, an easy bake oven. And before you even know it they are talking about show notes and links and saying goodbye. Episode #075:We revisit a pervious episode from August 2021. Enjoy!Patrick interrupts to tell her that she looks fuzzy, so we time out for laughter and camera cleaning. So anyway, she says…she likes to cook and do Sunday dinners. You know when the kitchen door closes, and the pugs are in the kitchen with her and everyone else is outside. She is happy and cooking or baking. As Patrick says, Janet loves to cook, when the door closes, Janet is in her happy place. When Janet is in her happy place Patrick is nowhere to be found. Sometimes even the pugs cannot be there. He kicks them out. If he cannot be there they cannot! She insists that the pugs know their spots.Sometimes they have company and Janet enjoys it. Sometimes she cooks brunch, sometimes it is dinner. The other day she did what Patrick and the family called “Mini-Thanksgiving.” She had a shoulder pork roast, a really nice one and as she says, you cannot just open a box of potatoes with meat that nice and call it a meal. You have to actually cook.  So, they continue and explain that if it is brunch, she usually does like pancakes, eggs, bacon (Patrick throws in, like a nine-course meal), sometimes hashbrowns or waffles. He says if he cannot get everything on one plate it is a mini-Thanksgiving (she interrupts and says he is happy) he says no Janet made too much food.Full podcast show notes available here:  https://www.18wheeltalk.com/e75Do forget to get your CoVid Shots here:  https://www.18wheeltalk.com/shotsHelp us DRIVE out Breast Cancer:  https://www.18wheeltalk.com/bcsupportOmalight Flashlight Military-grade aluminum alloy as the body material. Episode #074:In this episode our duo gets down to business right off the bat! What is happening to our jokesters? They have once again shown that in addition to handing out laughter and information they can really do a great interview. They are talking with Steve Strong, the V.P. of Admissions at the Southwest Truck Driver Training School. Of course, they did begin with a bit of laughter, we have come to expect that of them. Steve hits right back with the puns in his answers and it is such an easy interview that you will be drawn right in!Our hosts came prepared for the interview with questions that will help those that may be interested in becoming a truck driver. The conversation goes from challenges in career schools and how twenty or so years ago this type of school was getting a bad reputation. This was despite how two- and four-year colleges did not teach things like truck driving, electrical, heating and air conditioning, and such. Steve goes on to explain how these schools have changed over the years and have a much-needed place in our world. These types of schools fill a gap in training for those that do not want a career that was being offered in a two- or four-year college. And a career that can be taught quickly has advantages when the economy goes up and down. From there they go on to discuss the distinct types of trucking schools. Yes, there are several types, some are company owned, hiring for their company. Others are independent like Southwest; they train independently of any trucking company. So, drivers can choose the company they want to apply with. They go on to discuss what S.W.T.D.T. has to offer. The types of packages, the costs, hours, their incredible staff, and programs too. So, the bottom line is, this is such an informative, yet lively conversation. Everyone, whether you are looking to go to school to be a driver or not, will find it fun and informative. Because it will help guide you no matter what type of future you are looking for, Steve gives you general guidance to look for in your future. A good, friendly, honest company.Oh, and if you have the chance, you should see that lobby in the Phoenix campus along with the friendly atmosphere. Episode #073:  Our two troublemakers begin the show by playing freeze-face and laughing. What a shock. Patrick never seems to tell Janet when the show is starting. Today they are talking about 18 wheels of perfection and what is your choice driver? They know all of the nicknames and of course Patrick picks Janet's' favorite Rig. They go on to discuss the powertrain matching the hood ornament, slug bugs, and Rolls Royce hood ornaments. Janet continues to give Patrick grief about riding low and slow. His seat is riding on the bolts as she says, “on the rails”, hers is a true air-ride.So in between the laughter and teasing they occasionally do get in some talk about Big Rigs, but then again. They do a lot of teasing and laughing. They talk about the different types of Big Rigs they both know, what each has driven and of course, Janet talks about her Dad, and his preferences in semi-trucks. Janet has to explain to Patrick about the “what for” and what it is. When she gets to talking really fast, that drawl comes out big time. As does Patricks' teasing and laughing. What is your brand, your make, your hood ornament choice, for that new-to-you driver? That is what they are asking in-between stories about hot butter and lickety-split.And the stories continue! My Lord these two can go on and on like a long-haul freight train being pulled in Australia. However, they get their point across in a fun, entertaining way, giving out some information while they ask you some questions and make you laugh. So, enjoy the show Drivers and let the show know what you like to see on the other end of that big hood, what is your choice of hood ornament, your brand, your type, your go-to Big Rig Driver? Their reasoning was simple, they had an incredible guest on the show. Her name is Hope Zvara, she is the CEO and Guru of Mother Trucker Yoga. Her personality and ability to communicate with truckers in a positive manner shined brightly on the show. We've all heard that truckers can be a tough crowd to blend in with for a non-truck driver. However, you could not tell that by Hope's reaction to all of the questions our dynamic duo had for her. They began with her twenty years of learning about everything it took to bring her to where she is today. She never flinched, but she did laugh and explain that the twenty years was in learning, not “college or schooling proper”.Whether the questions were about working with large groups from big businesses. Or one on one with drivers from those companies who needed help with “getting healthier” in little steps. Hope never faltered. She really knows her stuff and that point came through, loud and clear, right along with her great sense of humor, smile, and small-town attitude of “can do”.Our duo did their research well about Hope and Mother Trucker Yoga and it showed. They seemed to ask all the right questions and find the right ways to highlight this fantastic guest and her company. Our hosts have that attitude of “If it helps the truckers” then they are all for it. And after reviewing everything that they could find about M.T.Y., it is the real deal. Along with the pain relief cream that is all natural that Hope developed, she has a book out to help people along with their health goals. This is truly an informative, fun, episode for those that are looking to be a little bit healthier. Episode #070:In today's episode our duo begin with a little joke for a friend. It will probably make a few people scratch their heads and then laugh. There is some definite wordplay today. But what they venture off to is how the movies play a role in life. Even something as ordinary in the life of a truck driver like a cb radio. However, this is not what the episode is really about, this is just our troublesome twosome being themselves. They take a stroll down memory lane in movies about truck driving or those that truckers have a major role in. They were surprised at how many movies they remembered before giving in and went to google for them.  They then finally turned to Shakespeare or so it seemed with “to cb or not to cb, that is the question”. Really what they are talking about is cb radios! The purpose of the podcast is why or why not drivers use cb radios now. From traffic delays from accidents, construction, truck stops with scales, paid parking, and load information at your stops to name a few. Plus of course, when everything else, like cell towers go down from bad weather, those cb's still work. They have a little more fun with cb handles, go into story time and more laughter with almost dirty jokes. And then back to useful information about why cb's are important. They help you communicate without breaking the law. They finish up with emergency information for those that either use cb's or are thinking of getting one. And finally, a few quotes from actual drivers from a survey that came up in research.Full podcast show notes available here: https://www.18wheeltalk.com/e70Omalight Flashlight Military-grade aluminum alloy as the body material. No matter how serious it is and how expensive the actual subject is. And of course, they get into the actual subject of chrome.  People ask truckers a lot of questions about how much they spend on a semi and how much they spend on the chrome they add to them.  They both felt that decking your Rig out with extra fancy paint and tons of chrome really got a huge boost with the show Chrome Shop Mafia. That was back around 1999. Which somehow leads them down yet another rabbit hole about show horses and movies. After they came back around to fancy chrome and chicken lights, they settled down to chrome again. They pulled out some basic examples of prices from a tried-and-true friend of the show. They went through individual prices and gave an approximate total price for example. They managed to give out some useful information in spite of themselves. And explain how you can spend less or more and that you can buy things a little at a time. They finish things up by being so darn useful you will be surprised! It is like they forgot how to joke. Patrick hauled medical waste and Janet hauled both 6-oil and gas. So, their first hurdle is getting past Patricks' inability to read what Janet sent him for notes. The print was too small, and he wasn't going to wear glasses and adjust his chair, camera, etc.  As always, this episode is filled with a few fact-based stories, but not so much fun this time. They go into the various types of endorsements needed to haul HazMat. Because so many times there are multiple endorsements needed. Such as HazMat with tanker or doubles & tripes. From there they go on to talk a bit about the training aspect of getting and retaining that endorsement. Janet stumbles over the words FMCSA - Federal Motor Carriers' Safety Association. And both laugh at the requirement being listed to have your CDL to get the endorsements. There are of course a few chuckles along the way. Mostly Patrick laughs at Janet, but it does go both ways. From there they discuss routing requirements, requirements for staying with your load, packing, loading and unloading of small quantity HazMat loads. As well as training records that are required for employers to keep. And of course, the why's about it all. They discuss how handling different loads effect you as a driver and go into classes of HazMat materials and more responsibilities. They finish up with the various classes of HazMat, security plans and end with mentioning that this episode is filled with useful links. 18WT #063: Cracking The Code To The Truck Driver Shortage!

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 8, 2022 73:30 Transcription Available

18WT 063:  So many people see trucking as a great opportunity.  So they go and get trained either paying themselves for a trucking school, or going through a company and having them pay.  Then they get their money back through a 2 year contract typically. Then a few months after training and into their very first otr job, they find out just how difficult truck driving is. Mentally, physically, and emotionally especially if they have family at home.  Let's be honest, kids just don't understand the parent being gone for weeks on end.  And that is how you make the money. Then there is the point of view of the trucking company. These big companies are willing to train the new people to drive, but people wonder why they pay so low to being with.  The reason seems to be that so many new drivers' leave after 6 months of being on their own behind the wheel and being gone from home and learning more about driving and breakdowns, hours of service, split sleeper, and find out that driving is a hard job. They go find jobs driving locally for smaller companies and places like Amazon and UPS.  Then that typically leaves the big company out in the cold with a driver they paid to train, that left the company.  And yes they no doubt send a bill for the schooling.  I bet that is difficult to collect. On the other side you have a few really great companies that pay extremely well and have great benefits.  However, you do not walk into those jobs straight out of school.  You have to do your “time” as they say and pay your dues until you have enough experience to get into those companies. So, after speaking to drivers we have found that not much has changed with truck driving in one aspect, but really if you think about it, so much really has changed. Since trucks started hauling goods.Full podcast show notes available here: https://www.18wheeltalk.com/e63 Instacart - Groceries delivered in as little as 1 hour. 18 WT 057: Robo Pug (Roborock E5 vacuum)  All right. I think, uh, I think it's working. Yeah. Look at that. The robot is about to start. Yes. Yeah. We gotta, we are reviewing The roborock E five, robotic vacuum cleaner. And right now it is starting its process here from its home dock. Yeah. We hit the start button. Yep. This was our choice. Uh, we looked at a lot of 'em.[00:00:29] This brand is what we decided to go with. And from there on, there was, I don't know, half a dozen or more choices. Okay. Um, this seemed to be the best with what we chose for our budget. And how smart we wanted it to be. Now we bought this during, uh, prime week, which was back in July, July, there's another prime week supposed to be happening in October.[00:00:52] Nice prime two. So we got, what did, what did we actually pay for this version on version with on prime week with a three year warranty? We paid one 20. Okay. So this is what you get for one 20. We have a video. Um, and it just shows it doing its thing. Yeah. This is our product review right now. It's it's, uh, we, we push the start button and, and it was doing part of one of the bedrooms.[00:01:20] Um, right now we're, we're, we're watching it. It's in the living room. We got, we got, uh, one of our pugs just totally ignoring it. Just Cailin, lying by her Teddy bear, watching it, do it's, thing, waiting for it to come run her over. She just kind of giving it, giving a lip service and it came all over towards her.[00:01:39] So she decided I better get up out of the way so he could do his job. They're not, they at the beginning, they were kind of undecided. You'll see, in this video, what I mean by undecided? Yeah. Um, the one thing I do like a lot, well, they barked at it the first day that we opened it and, and it started doing its pattern because it's gotta learn what it's gonna do.[00:01:59] Yep. It has to learn the household pattern and. The less obstacles you have in a house, the easier it is for this one to learn or any robotic vacuum. We have a complicated house though. because of furniture, pug toys. And for whoever designed this house back in the seventies decided they liked walls. Yeah.[00:02:24] A lot of rooms. Well, we got it's a, we live in a three bedroom, two bath home townhome. yes So therefore it's with a closed off kitchens, it's a single level. So therefore it's, it's, you know, the floor patterns on the first floor everything's on the first floor, that's it? There's no upstairs. Yeah. Which is, it's a closed off kitchen.[00:02:45] It's and it's got a nice entryway, but it's about 1500 square foot. We really like it. Um, but anyway, what I really like about this. It does a good job. Um, and it's really good about doing straight lines. I have a thing about vacuuming in straight lines. First time we ran it, I saw that it was putting the vacuum lines in the carpet and I had to grab Janet and say, look, look, oh my God, look, look, do you see it?[00:03:12] Do you see it? She's like, what? See what I said, it's putting vacuum lines on the rug. I knew right then I'd like it, I don't don't care how stupid it is. I like that. But. That's my robo pug and it has cut back drastically with two pugs. Pugs do shed. One is a, uh, double coat. One's a triple coat, um, pugs shed a lot, and it's cut back drastically on the amount of hair in the house.[00:03:38] Oh, yes, it has. I I've even noticed it's at first. I didn't think we were ever gonna be able to keep it. We'll say butt clean. well, we can explain that, but now that we've had it for a while, it's it doesn't pick up nearly as much hair because we run it at least...Full podcast show notes available here: www.18wheeltalk.com/e57Support the show

18WT 053:  HORSE RACING - Medina Spirit Stripped of 2021 Kentucky Derby Win.  Medina Spirit is no longer the winner of the 2021 Kentucky Derby. The colt, who died unexpectedly in December, was officially disqualified by Kentucky racing officials on Monday for failing a drug test after winning the race.  Medina Spirit is only the third horse in the race's 147-year history to receive such a penalty after finishing first. The decision means the colt's owner will not collect the $1.8 million first-place check, which was never paid out and will now go to Mandaloun's owner. Churchill Downs, the track in Louisville, Ky., that hosts the Derby, said in a statement that it now recognizes Mandaloun as the winner of the 2021 race. The ruling also erased the Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert's seventh Kentucky Derby victory, which had been a record. In addition, Baffert was suspended for 90 days beginning March 8 and fined $7,500. The drug found in Medina Spirit's system was betamethasone, a corticosteroid injected into joints to reduce pain and swelling. Baffert said the drug was applied topically to treat a skin rash on Medina Spirit's hind end.The disqualification puts a new stain on a sport that has been troubled by doping problems and places Baffert's reputation and future in the sport in jeopardy. Baffert, whose horses won the Triple Crown in 2015 and 2018, is thoroughbred horse racing's most recognizable personality. The decision by Kentucky racing officials comes at a time when the Triple Crown season is heating up and the quest for qualifying points to earn a spot in the Derby's starting gate is getting urgent. Churchill Downs had already suspended Baffert from the race for two years and refused to award qualifying points to horses he would train for the 2022 Derby.Baffert has three accomplished 3-year-old colts in his barn — two of them, Corniche and Newgrange, are undefeated. If their owners want to participate in the Derby, they must transfer their horses to another trainer and hope to earn qualifying points in future prep races.Last month, Baffert threatened to sue Churchill Downs if the track did not lift the two-year ban, saying that his right to due process was violated and that he had been unlawfully excluded from Churchill Downs and the Derby.Bill Carstanjen, the chief executive of Churchill Downs, said the complaint was “meritless.” He threatened to countersue if it was filed and emphasized that Baffert was a repeat offender. In all, Baffert's horses have failed 30 drug tests over four decades, including five in a recent 13-month period. The necropsy results for Medina Spirit, who died in December indicated that the colt most likely died of a heart attack.  The disqualification, along with recent guilty pleas and convictions of prominent trainers and veterinarians for.... Full Podcast Show Notes Available Here:  www.18wheeltalk.com/e53C4 Energy - Performance energy drinks. 18WT 051:  On this episode we talk about Spring, after all it was the first day of Spring.  We also talked about Slang in America. You know those words and phrases that are regarded as very informal, are more common in speech than writing, and are typically restricted to a particular context or group of people.SLANG IN AMERICA20% of Americans admit to using slang in every conversation.  50% of Americans use slang terms without knowing what they mean.  The most well-known slang words and phrases in America are “ghosted,” “salty,” and “on point.”  58% of Americans don't know what the ‘Rona' means.  66% of parents are annoyed by slang, compared to 46% of people without children.  46% of Americans think it's appropriate to use slang in a professional setting and 42% would use it in front of their boss. How do you refer to those people, things, and experiences that are amazing or awesome? Are they cool? Perhaps they're rad? In the 1980s, you might have called them bad. Today, for example, you might refer to your perfect curls as on fleek.  What do all these interesting words have in common? They're all slang words. If you're a kid, we'll bet you use plenty of slang words. But guess what? Adults use them, too. What are slang words? Some experts define them as “deliberate alternative vocabulary that sends social signals.” Merriam-Webster says slang is “very informal nonstandard vocabulary.” Slang words say something about the attitudes of the people, groups, and subcultures that use them.  The word “slang” began as a word in northern England that was used to refer to territory or turf. Over time, it came to refer to the people who would advertise and sell goods in certain locations. Eventually, slang became the term used to describe the colorful, informal speech these salespeople used. You may have noticed that new slang words tend to pop up quite often. They can appear as new meanings for existing words, brand new words, or abbreviations for words  If you've ever said yolo, fleek, bae, selfie, juju, woke, or dank meme, you've used slang!  So where do all these new slang words come from? Language grows and changes over time. New words and new meanings for old words come about all the time.  Over the past couple of decades, many slang words have come from three specific sources. These are popular music, politics, and the Internet. Popular music, especially rap and hip hop, has led to many slang words. Politics has also given rise to numerous slang words. In large part, this is due to how divided people seem to be over major issues. For better or worse, words such as snowflake, woke, and triggered have taken on new meanings. Often, this is thanks to constant bickering before, during, and after election cycles.Perhaps the biggest source of slang words, however, is the Internet....Full Podcast Show Notes Available Here:  www.18wheeltalk.com/e51C4 Energy - Performance energy drinks. 18WT 050:  On this episode we decided to revisit our food for thought topic from the week  before when we had a ghost in the machine. Janet asked what is your favorite food to eat both at home or at a restaurant. We also talked about some facts that Janet found online. These facts were taken from www.flavorproducers.com  A Better Us We all strive for self improvement, so let's start with what sustains us. From organic offerings to clean and clear labels, sustainable packaging and beyond, the food industry is adapting to consumer demand for more personalized and sustainable options.Borderless Taste  Taste has gotten bigger as the world has gotten smaller. Thanks to improvements in global communication along with consumers access to exotic ingredients, cooking techniques and recipes the flavors of the world are more available than ever. A Growing Palate   Basic taste has grown up. Flavor profiles that were once avoided or thought too niche for large brands have surprised the market and found commercial success. Taste profiles like bitter, sour and umami, that were once an afterthought, are now active discussions in new product development.Toying With Emotions  The integration of online culture and social media has changed the way consumers are interacting with food. Food and drinks that appeal beyond taste and onto an emotional, visual or creative level are flooding social media and in return expanding into foodservice and then landing in retail spaces. A Little Off-Base   As functionality continues to change the food and beverage landscape, it has carved an expanding path of consumer flavor interaction and acceptance. The rise of “alternative” products has evolved flavor masking into flavor mimicking finding flavor optimization to fill in the gaps of new products. Searching for the new normal as a second year of COVID-19 passes with new challenges such as variants, supply chain issues and social dissidence have consumers more focused into what is affecting their personal mental and physical wellbeing. The chant for greater transparency around all facets of life including; politics, financial markets, relationships, social media and food seems to be getting louder and louder by the hour. Indulgences that were once comforting are now being revaluated, as consumers are establishing healthier boundaries in vices while still finding a flavorful escape. Hampered by supply chain issues, restaurateurs are rethinking menus, to eliminate potential bottlenecks while streamlining innovation. • Increased Transparency • Healthy Relationships with Food • Mindful Alcohol & Alternatives • Personalized Wellness • Fresh, Organic & Limited Menus Key Drivers: Transparency, Fresh, Mindful & Well80%....Full Podcast Show Notes Available Here:  www.18wheeltalk.com/e50 C4 Energy - Performance energy drinks. 18WT 049:  On this episode we discussed Heart Health Month and over 20 different ways to a healthier heart. We feel that heart health month should be something everyone should think about all year long. Below are 20 plus different ways to get started to a healthier heart. Stop smoking - no ifs, ands, or butts   and stay away from secondhand smoke.  There are many steps you can take to help protect your health and blood vessels. Avoiding tobacco is one of the best. Control your cholesterol and blood pressure. Slim down - If you're carrying extra fat around your middle, it's time to slim down.  Then stay at a healthy weight Have sex - having sex can be good for your heart!  lower frequency of sexual activity is associated with higher rates of cardiovascular disease. Engage in hobbies - that are relaxing too! Put your hands to work to help your mind unwind. Read a book, make something ~ cooking, baking, woodworking, knitting, sewing, ect… Eat fiber -  a diet rich in soluble fiber can help lower your level of low-density lipoprotein, or “bad cholesterol.  salsa offers a delicious and antioxidant-rich snack. Consider mixing in a can of black beans for an added boost of heart-healthy fiber. Listen to music -  dancing makes for a great heart-healthy workout. Like other forms of aerobic exercise, it raises your heart rate and gets your lungs pumping. It also burns up to 200 calories or more per hour Eat fish -  Many fish, such as salmon, tuna, sardines, and herring, are rich sources of omega-3 fatty acids. Try to eat fish at least twice a week, suggests the AHA Trusted Source. If you're concerned about mercury or other contaminants in fish, you may be happy to learn that its heart-healthy benefits tend to outweigh the risks for most people. Laugh - laughing can lower stress hormones, decrease inflammation in your arteries, and raise your levels of high-density lipoprotein (HLD), also known as “good cholesterol.” Stretch - Yoga can help you improve your balance, flexibility, and strength. It can help you relax and relieve stress. As if that's not enough, yoga also has potential to improve heart health. Drink alcohol in moderation - Moderate consumption of alcohol can help raise your levels of HDL, or good cholesterol. It can also help prevent blood clot formation and artery damage. According to the Mayo Clinic, red wine in particular may offer benefits for your heart. That doesn't mean you should guzzle it at every meal. The key is to only drink alcohol in moderation. Avoid salt - Processed and restaurant-prepared foods tend to be especially high in salt. So think twice before filling up on your favorite fast-food fix. Consider using a salt....Full Podcast Show Notes Available Here:  www.18wheeltalk.com/e49C4 Energy - Performance energy drinks. NFL -  Antonio Brown vs the Tampa Bay Bucs … 2 months since the Jets game where Brown took his shirt off while leaving the field and the receiver still seems as mad as ever about being dumped.  Brown took to social media on Monday to lodge another complaint against his former team. This time around, not only did the receiver throw the organization under the bus, but he also pinned some blame on Tom Brady for not throwing him the ball in Tampa Bay's infamous game against the Jets. Here's what Brown posted to Instagram on Monday (via the Tampa Bay Times):   He blamed the Buccaneers for his injury: "They tried to hurt me intentionally. Sent me out there after knowing I was still hurt."  He says that Brady lied to him: "Tom said he would throw it if I came to play hurt, I came. He didn't throw it, imagine being hurt, having to play through this and being lied (to) too."  He continues to insist that Bruce Arians made him play hurt: "Coach said if I couldn't run on this, get the f--k out of there."  “Fuck all you M-F” “still caint (sic) stop me @nfl”  the Buccaneers coach has denied that version of events.   BTW…He walked off because he was told, come play and you will get the ball.  And he hadn't.  Question answered. The Senior Bowl is behind us, the Super Bowl is in the books and the combine is a week away. Free agency is also on the horizon and then, finally, the NFL draft will be here in just over two months. Which means that as we begin to settle into how the first 32 picks might shake out, there is still a ton of uncertainty.  The biggest talk right now is QB's or rather the lack of them.  None are picked to go in the first 10. NBA -  All- Star game, Stephen Curry hits 16 3s to win All-Star Game MVP; LeBron James nails game winner.  Noticeably missing from the starting lineup was any player from the league's best team the Phoenix Suns.  Curry, who set the NBA's all-time record for 3-pointers made earlier this season, hit an absurd 16 3-pointers -- which would be the most in any game in NBA history, and smashed the prior All-Star Game record of nine.  The first three quarters of the game are played individually for charities. The last quarter was played to a target score of 24 over the final of the first three, to honor the late Kobe Bryant Chris Paul of the Suns did play for a few minutes in the first quarter with a fractured thumb.  However he is now out for about six weeks for recovery.  Michael Jordan arrived late in the game but in time for the ceremony of the 75 greatest of all time (he is one of them).  He was in Daytona Beach where he had two cars in the Dayton 500.Full Podcast Show Notes Available Here:  www.18wheeltalk.com/e46C4 Energy - Performance energy drinks. 18WT 045:  Valentine's Day, also called Saint Valentine's Day or the Feast of Saint ValentineOriginated as a Christian feast day honoring one or two early Christian martyrs named Saint Valentine…The Feast of Saint Valentine was established by Pope Gelasius I in AD 496 to be celebrated on February 14 in honor of Saint Valentine of Rome, who died on that date in AD 269.The day became associated with romantic love in the 14th & 15th centuriesSaint Valentine of Rome was put in prison for ministering to Christians persecuted under the Roman Empire in the third century. According to an early legend, Saint Valentine restored sight to the blind daughter of his jailer.Additions to the legend have better related it to the theme of love: an 18th-century embellishment to the legend claims he wrote the jailer's daughter a letter signed "Your Valentine" as a farewell before his execution. Another addition supposes that Saint Valentine performed weddings for Christian soldiers who were forbidden to marry. In 18th-century England, it grew into an occasion in which couples expressed their love for each other by presenting flowers, offering confectionery, & sending greeting cards (known as "valentines").Valentine's Day symbols that are used today include the heart-shaped outline, doves, & the figure of the winged Cupid. Since the 19th century, handwritten valentines have given way to mass-produced greeting cards. In Italy, Saint Valentine's Keys are given to lovers "as a romantic symbol & an invitation to unlock the giver's heart", as well as to children to ward off epilepsy (called Saint Valentine's Malady)....Full Podcast Show Notes Available Here:  www.18wheeltalk.com/e45C4 Energy - Performance energy drinks. 18WT 040:  On this episode we talked about Identity Theft, ways to prevent it and what to do if you are subject to it. Oh yeah and we had Margaritas too. This was also our first time LIVE on 4 different social media platforms.IDENTITY THEFT AND HOW TO PROTECT YOURSELFKey takeawaysEnroll in additional security features like 2-factor authentication and secure your mobile phone and email accounts.Be wary of calls or emails threatening legal action or account closures. Don't trust calls from individuals claiming to represent technical support, the IRS, or your financial institutions.File your tax return as early as possible. Being contacted by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) can cause concern for any taxpayer, but imagine receiving a telephone call and hearing this:"This prerecorded message is to notify you that the IRS has found fraud and misconduct on your tax return. This needs to be resolved immediately, and it's very important that I hear from you as soon as possible or a legal action will be taken against you."Most people are quick to spot the call as a fake since the IRS doesn't threaten taxpayers by telephone, emails, or text messages—or issue arrest warrants. But any scam can work if you aren't paying close attention. Remember these guidelines:If something seems fishy, hit the brakes. Wait until your emotions have settled and research what's going on. Fraudsters use tight deadlines to try to force you into a rash decision.Never call back a number in a message asking for sensitive information, like in the example above. Don't follow a link in an unsolicited email or text message either. Go to the website of the company or organization, or call their main phone number, and get in touch with them through direct channels. When in doubt, do an internet search for the company or organization involved, followed by the word "scam."If you think you've been a victim of ID theft, put a freeze on your credit files if you don't plan to borrow money soon—or place a fraud alert on your credit reports. The freeze prevents any new credit from being approved, but you can freeze and unfreeze your credit file for free. The fraud alert notifies lenders and creditors that they should take extra steps to verify your identity before extending credit.Contact one of the 3 credit bureaus to request a fraud alert or credit freeze - Equifax at 800-525-6285 (equifax.com), Experian at 888-397-3742 (experian.com), or TransUnion at 800-680-7289 (transunion.com).Full Podcast Show Notes Available Here:  www.18wheeltalk.com/e40C4 Energy - Performance energy drinks.
