Andrew has been closely following the efforts of organizations like MAPS (Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies) and Lykos Therapeutics as they pioneer the use of MDMA-assisted therapy for treating PTSD. Recently, the FDA delivered a surprising and disappointing decision, declining to approve MDMA-assisted therapy despite promising clinical data and asking the company to conduct an additional Phase 3 Study. This ruling has sent shockwaves through the field of psychedelic medicine, especially for those who had high hopes that MDMA would become the first federally regulated psychedelic treatment. In our conversation today, Andrew will share his insights on the FDA's decision, the implications for Lykos Therapeutics, and what this means for the future of psychedelic therapies. We'll delve into the challenges faced by Lykos, including the FDA's request for an additional clinical trial, which could add years and significant costs to the approval process. We'll also explore the broader context of this decision—how it affects the momentum of the psychedelic medicine movement, the reaction from supporters and critics alike, and the potential shifts in strategy as the industry continues to navigate regulatory hurdles. For those interested in the intersection of health, science, and business, this discussion promises to be both timely and insightful. Welcome to the Green Rush, a KCSA Strategic Communications Production, a weekly conversation at the intersection of cannabis, psychedelics, the capital markets, and culture. This week's episode is a crossover roundtable event with our friends at the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) covering the DEA's proposed rescheduling of cannabis from Schedule I to a Schedule III drug. Hosted by our very own Anne Donohoe, the Q&A discussion also features Betty Aldworth, Director of Communications & Post-Prohibition Strategy at MAPS, Karen O'Keefe, Director of State Policies at Marijuana Policy Project (MPP) and Paul Armentano, Deputy Director at NORML. With the unprecedented federal drug policy change on the near horizon, MAPS assembled leaders with more than 50 years of combined experience in the cannabis policy reform movement to talk about what these changes are, why they matter, what myths need debunking, and what still needs to be done. Some of the topics covered in this conversation include the impact rescheduling will have on research and development of cannabis-based medicines, criminal law and systems-impacted people, cannabis banking and interstate commerce and veteran affairs. If you are interested in learning more about how MAPS, MPP or NORML have played pivotal roles in implementing drug policy reform over the decades, be sure to follow them all on their socials linked in our show notes and visit their websites to follow their advocacy work. This week Lewis Goldberg and Kris Krane sit down with long-time friend of the podcast Adam Smith, Founder and President of the Alliance for Sensible Markets, to talk about the DEA's historic decision to reclassify cannabis from a Schedule I to Schedule III drug. Adam and our hosts also discuss the potential impacts this development will have on the industry and markets, the elimination of the 280E tax, and the potential global rescheduling of cannabis under the UN Single Convention on Narcotics. As the industry awaits what comes next, the team identifies M&A opportunities and clarity on interstate commerce as key areas of interest to watch over the coming months.
