Russia thought it would conquer Ukraine in 10 days, Ukrainian resolve is still preventing that. But after more than a million casualties on both sides, thousands of pieces of military hardware destroyed, will it simply come down to which side can outlast the other? Sitrep's Simon Newton and Hannah King join us from Kyiv to share how the people, and their resolve, are holding up, while Professor Michael Clarke analyses the battlefield picture. If it doesn't come down simply to attrition then what could prove to be a tipping point? Ukraine hopes permission to fire British Storm Shadow and American ATACMS missiles into Russia could be a game changer, while Russia's banking on ratcheting up nuclear rhetoric to discourage western support. Sitrep assesses the effect they could have.

The Desperation of Asylum Seekers on Poland's Border

From Our Own Correspondent Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 20, 2021 28:55

During the Cold War, the border between NATO countries and the Soviet bloc was heavily fortified, each side fearing the other might one day roll across it in their tanks. Since then, alliances have shifted, and Poland is now firmly within the western military ambit. But that means it is also on the front line in what some call a new Cold War, facing Belarus, a staunch ally of Russia. And these days, Poland is not worrying about tanks crossing any time soon, but people: the asylum seekers who were mustered on the Belarus side. As Nick Beak explains, most seemed desperate to cross over. There have been several thousand attempts by asylum seekers to cross into Poland from Belarus. Compare that figure to the situation in Turkey, which now plays host to four million people who fled there, most of them escaping the civil war in neighbouring Syria. Turkey and its President won international praise for accepting these new arrivals, and devoted considerable resources to providing them with food and housing. However, it seems the mood is changing. Ayla Jean Yackley says Turks are now ever less willing to see money spent on helping refugees, when their country's own economy is in poor shape. The United States plays host to a wide variety of wild animals, such as grizzly bears, alligators and rattle snakes. It was once also home to millions of wild turkeys, a bird seen almost as a symbol of the US, as it is eaten each year for the Thanksgiving Festival. The wild turkey population had declined in recent decades, but a concerted conservation effort has restored some of this lost population. However, Alice Hutton says the birds are now causing havoc in some American cities. Libya might soon be ruled over by President Gadhafi - not that the late Colonel Gadhafi has been restored to life, nor did it turn out that his death was faked. But Libya is holding presidential elections next month, and among the candidates are one Saif Al Islam Gadhafi, Muammar Gadhafi's son. He was one of his father's more strident supporters, and the fact that he is being taken seriously says much about Libya today, according to Orla Guerin. The coronavirus outbreak and its lockdowns have meant isolation for many people, but few have been affected like sailors in the Royal Navy. They are accustomed to being cut off, being away at sea for long periods. However, with many countries closed to visitors, sailors have no longer been able even to enjoy shore leave the way they did previously, as Hannah King found when she visited one of Britain's newest aircraft carriers.

While attending university, Hannah King was taught a crucial business principle that would impact her life: rather than creating a product or business and then looking for customers, you need to identify a problem or need first, and design your product or business to solve it.Being Guatemalan-American and visiting the small villages of Guatemala during her school breaks opened her eyes to an issue that the indigenous people faced. Their traditional artwork and handmade products were beautiful and unique, but when tourism slowed, they struggled to make sales.Hannah recognized the need for a platform for these artists, similar to what U.S. artisans have to promote their products online. Thus, after winning a business competition from her school which gave her start-up funds, her business Woven Futures was born. In this episode, Hannah shares the background of her incredible entrepreneurial journey and gives insight to other young entrepreneurs looking to get their start. How can you meet a need or fill a gap in your community through your business? About Hannah: Hannah King is the founder of Woven Futures, an ethical fashion company with a mission of preserving Latin American Textiles and Indigenous artisan techniques through modern and sustainable fashion. She began Woven while in college, after she spent the summer in her home country of Guatemala. There she met several indigenous artisans that made incredible textile pieces, but struggled to sell them. Imagine getting a knock on your door one night, when you go to open it to find a police officer standing in the rain with a Baby boy wrapped in a kitchen towel, who had been abandoned in the bushes by your house. From Our Own Correspondent Podcast

Uruguay's anti-drug laws were never as strict as expected - and its path to decriminalisation of cannabis has also been full of paradox. Simon Maybin explores why the country's taken a slow and steady path to regulate marijuana growers and sellers - and visits a greenhouse full of legal weed. Kate Adie introduces this and other stories from correspondents around the world. In Nepal, joining the ranks of the British Army's Gurkhas has long been one of the few options for a stable income. Regimental wages have kept some whole villages, not just families, solvent - so there's a lot riding on the selection process. Hannah King of BFBS witnessed the most recent intake and saw how these young men are prepared for a drastic change in their lives. Over recent weeks the streets of Haiti have simmered with discontent, with protesters confronting police and the army in the capital, Port au Prince, over systemic corruption, rising food prices and enduring inequality. Thomas Rees describes how the rising tensions made themselves felt on the streets. On the Karakorum Highway, Chris Haslam sat down to talk business with the driver of one of Pakistan's famous painted trucks - the elaborately-decorated palaces on wheels which haul goods and passengers along one of the highest-altitude roads in the world. But times are changing for them, with competition from "vast Chinese behemoths" now plying the same route as part of the Belt and Road expansion. And as the world worries over reports of deforestation and dwindling insect numbers around the world, Emilie Filou has a rare tale of revival from Madagascar - with the story of how one NGO has brought back the art of weaving a special kind of silk, made not by worms but by a unique local moth.

Part 2 of 2--Today we are continuing our coaching call with Hannah King! This has SO many great moments that I can't even begin to pull them out. If you haven't listened to Part 1 you will want to do that HERE first! Hannah approached us about coaching around her relationship with her partner and specifically around sex. This is a topic so many of us struggle with and we hear from our listeners that they are dealing with major issues with their partners. When you want a rich and juicy life you need to have relationships that are rich and juicy. So how do you get there? Thank you Hannah for your bravery and honesty! We are amazed by your willingness to share. A production note...we apologize for the strange sounds on this episode...some banging and weird sort of echo sound that occurs frequently. We try to edit out as much background weirdness as possible but unfortunately the sounds on today's episode could not be edited out without messing with the interview and losing a lot of the verbiage. I was close to punting the whole thing but in the end I felt like the coaching call and information provided was way too important for you all to miss. Thank you for your understanding! A little info about Hannah with her bio-- My name is Hannah, but family has always called me ‘B’, or ‘Hannah B’.  I am a brave mama, just like you, discovering my true north and paving my path to a life of my own design.  This transforming journey has been enlivened and enriched since becoming a mother. At 23, I met a man while traveling solo through Southeast Asia. We got pregnant a month and a half later. Two months after our daughter was born we had to move 3,000 miles from family and our community so he could provide for us. He was gone 6 long days of every week, while I was home with our daughter. Although it was challenging, I eventually found a good rhythm, but then… I became pregnant again. I had lost myself in motherhood and depression struck me like a slow but powerful wave. Living in pajamas, I was isolated, idle and indifferent. I ached for a tribe and longed for connection; I was suffering, and I knew that something had to shift. It dawned on me that if I was to raise strong, directed, passionate and confident children I had to BE that, not just preach about it to them. My life had to be different; I had to show up, stand up, speak up and choose the direction of my life. Settling for a life that wasn’t full of joy was over. I had to lose myself in my hunt towards discovering my true north.  I had to let go of the woman I was before motherhood.  She was gone.  She no longer existed. I was forced to redefine who I was and SURRENDER to all that motherhood placed before me so that I could uncover a broader heightened form of self. It opened me up to allow the woman I was called to become to move through to the surface. I rose above all the challenges and began my journey into living my life with directed purpose, bravery, and dedication to standing completely in my power. From this place of clarity, I uncovered my greater purpose beyond motherhood: My mission and calling is to guide women back home to their divine, true nature by empowering them to redefine what motherhood looks like and live their life with more joy, passion, and self-love. This week we invite you to join us on the Doing the Work Facebook page to talk about your relationships and sex life. We know this can be a difficult subject to tackle and are grateful to Hannah for opening up the doors for all of us to communicate with each other and find support. If you are currently struggling to achieve a goal, manifest your dreams, or just get over the hump in an area of transformation--we are here to help! Contact us through the contact form or via Facebook to sign up to have a coaching session on a future episode. We would love to help! And a free coaching session from Jay is pretty darn amazing too.
