The new law took effect last month to make possessing a ProPad without a legitimate purpose punishable by five-years in prison, and ten-years if someone uses it to actually steal a vehicle.   And number three — Parts of Florida are expected to feel what's left of Tropical Storm Sara.  Remnants of Sara dissipated yesterday morning after bringing more than three-feet of rain to Honduras.  The National Hurricane Center says the storm could bring tropical moisture to the Sunshine State and the northern Gulf Coast on Wednesday.

This bill was introduced by Kentucky Rep. Thomas Massie on May 16 of this year (just two and a half months ago). It was referred to the Financial Services Committee in the US House. It has 26 co-sponsors so far, but none of them from Utah. * Urge your senators to co-sponsor and support Senate Bill 4463 - A bill to abolish the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System and the Federal reserve banks, to repeal the Federal Reserve Act, and for other purposes. This bill was introduced by Utah Senator Mike Lee on June 5 of this year (just two months ago). It was referred to the Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs Committee. How do the countries stack up against each other in terms of regulation readiness for open banking? Dodd Frank passed into law in 2010 but we're only talking about the regulations going into place at the end of 2024. Why? What are the metrics we should be looking at that will indicate we're moving toward connected finance in the right way and at the right speed? What must the consumer be reassured of when it comes to asking them to offer up their data? Why financial services is one of the first verticals being looked at for the application of data regulation. How data access will bring more competition which will bring more benefits to consumers. Is 2024 the year of trust-busting? This bipartisan issue of small versus big is a fight taking place on the streets and in the federal and state courts; led by grassroots movements and consumer protest. The Biden administration has stepped up anti-trust action, but the number of merger filings is also up. What should we make of this moment? To help answer that question, Laura is joined by two experts on anti-trust action: Stacy Mitchell, Co-Executive Director of the Institute for Local Self-Reliance and Matt Stoller, author of “Goliath: The Hundred Year War Between Monopoly Power and Democracy” and publisher of the newsletter “BIG” on Substack. Mitchell has played a leading role in today's growing anti-monopoly movement and her work informed the Federal Trade Commission's antitrust lawsuit against Amazon in 2023. Stoller is the former policy advisor to the Senate Budget Committee and also worked for a member of the Financial Services Committee in the U.S. House of Representatives during the financial crisis. In this episode, they unpack how decades of corporate consolidation did not lead to cheaper prices, better service or more jobs, but instead worsened our local economies, the quality of our lives and democracy. How have people power and government action together brought about a shift? Is it real? Hear why one guest calls this moment a delayed policy reaction to the 2008 financial crisis, plus a commentary from Laura for tax day.“What we are seeing in this administration is we actually have people in place who are making huge change and are using the tools to the full extent that they have . . . There is a lot of grassroots support for the idea of dealing with corporate power. Everybody is feeling this . . .” - Stacy Mitchell“It's very clear that not having competition in these markets kills . . . In areas like hospices and elder care, dialysis or other parts of healthcare people die. And also in things like Boeing, people die.” - Matt StollerGuests:•  Stacy Mitchell: Co-Executive Director, Institute for Local Self-Reliance•  Matt Stoller: Research Director, American Economic Liberties Project; Publisher, BIG & Author, Goliath: The Hundred Year War Between Monopoly Power and Democracy Full Episode Notes are located HERE.  They include related episodes, articles, and more.Music In the Middle:  “Culture Today” by Edy Forey. the title track from their new album.  And additional music included- "Steppin"  by Podington Bear. The Hollywood strike has now passed the 100 day mark with no end in sight. Just one week ago, on August 4, Writers Guild of America negotiators met for the very first time in three months with representatives of the major studios to discuss whether contract talks can resume.  According to Bloomberg reporter Lucas Shaw, they “made zero progress. The two sides are no closer than they were at the start of the strike. They can't even agree on how to resume negotiations.” With much of the strike centered on the power imbalance between the major studios and their writers and the consolidation and lack of transparency among the streaming giants, we reached out to an expert on the issues of monopoly and corporate power in America for his take. Matt Stoller is the Director of Research at the American Economic Liberties Project.  He is the author of “Goliath: The Hundred Year War Between Monopoly Power and Democracy”, which Business Insider called “one of the year's best books on how to rethink capitalism and improve the economy.” Stoller is a former policy advisor to the Senate Budget Committee and he also worked for a member of the Financial Services Committee in the U.S. House of Representatives during the financial crisis.  Matt's 2012 law review article on the foreclosure crisis, “The Housing Crash and the End of American Citizenship”, predicted the rise of autocratic political forces, and his 2016 Atlantic article, “How the Democrats Killed their Populist Soul”, helped inspire the new anti-monopoly movement. We are pleased to have Steve Stivers with us as we are honoring Ohio's veterans this November. Steve is currently the President and CEO of the Ohio Chamber of Commerce. But for 10 years, Ohio's knew his as Congressman Stivers, when he was representing Ohio's 15th District in the U.S. House of Representatives. Steve has devoted your life to public service. While serving in Congress from 2011 until earlier in 2021, he served on the Financial Services Committee, and was the Ranking Member of the Housing, Community Development and Insurance Subcommittee. Prior to Congress, he was also a member of the Ohio Senate. And for over 30 years he served in the Ohio Army National Guard, holding the rank of Major General, with deployment to various Middle East campaigns – and awarded the Bronze Star for Leadership. Veterans Day holds a special place in the heart of our country. Steve provides us with some thoughts on the importance of this holiday, and how we can continue to support our troops and our vets. Veterans, regardless of age, should be provided workforce opportunities and training. More effort is required for successful job placement, as our veterans have very specialized skill sets. We hear Steve's perspectives on the issues and why Ohio employers should tap into this phenomenal group of job candidates. One issue we often discuss with job seekers and employers is how to assist candidates to positively present their transferable skills and experiences in a job interview. Not every soldier wishes to pursue logistics! We talk about some suggestions for both veterans and employers in reaching “win-win” job placements. The Ohio Department of Vets Services and our county veterans' programs are strong assets in the community and bring great value to the lives of our vets. We need to encourage veterans to utilize all of the resources available to them. We talk about how to do this. We then talk with Steve about his new role with the Chamber and how is seeing the Chamber meeting the needs of our employer community. He shares the Chamber's plans for supporting the rebuild of Ohio's economic picture. Remember, we have nearly 900,000 veterans in Ohio, the 6th highest number of veterans in any state in the U.S. You may not be a veteran, but you may have a family member or friend in need of assistance. We want to ensure all of our veterans are able to take advantage of the incredible resources available to them. Check out our website for more resources. We would love to hear from you.
