Peter Diamandis has built more of the future than almost anyone alive. He founded XPRIZE. He co-founded Singularity University with Ray Kurzweil. He started Human Longevity with Craig Venter. And in his new book with Steven Kotler, We Are as Gods, he argues that artificial intelligence isn't just changing what we can do. It's changing what it means to be human. I'm not so sure. This is Peter's fifth time on Into the Impossible, and the conversation I've been waiting years to have. His thesis: AI will deliver not just intelligence at scale, but wisdom — and humanity is already crossing the threshold into godlike capability, whether we're ready or not. My pushback: an experiment one of my students and I ran shows large language models trained only on pre-1911 physics cannot reproduce what Einstein did with the same data. If wisdom were just scale, that shouldn't be true. We go after it for an hour. No hedging, no softening. What you'll hear: — Whether AGI can manufacture genuine wisdom or just better simulations of it — The pre-1911 Einstein test and what it reveals about the ceiling of current AI — The "five forks of humanity": longevity, BCI, off-planet speciation, creators vs. consumers, and uploading — What happens to human purpose when scarcity disappears — Why Peter thinks India dominates the next twenty years of science and technology — Peter's Fermi paradox theory and why he thinks we may be someone else's biosphere experiment — The Future Vision XPRIZE and how dystopian training data may be making AI more dangerous — David Sinclair's epigenetic age-reversal trials, now underway in human eyes Peter says what you did between breakfast and dinner would be godlike to your grandparents. We just stopped noticing. Subscribe if you want science with evidence, not speculation. CHAPTERS 00:00 Diamandis: AGI will generate wisdom by simulating billions of outcomes 04:07 Brian's counterargument: wisdom requires embodiment, not just simulation 07:07 The GPU + LLM architecture may already be a local maximum 09:48 AI is outpacing most math PhDs but the ceiling is still unknown 15:30 Diamandis fires back at the doomers 17:59 AI will eventually untangle the legal systems blocking the future 23:18 The Singularity has religious qualities and both hosts take that seriously 29:37 Post-scarcity splits humanity into creators and consumers 36:08 Peter's Fermi paradox theory: we may be someone else's biosphere experiment 43:07 Dystopian AI training data may be causing misalignment 51:46 Human trials are underway for epigenetic eye age reversal ——— Get the transcript, fascinating bonus content, and my Monday M.A.G.I.C. We've been talking a lot about healthspan and longevity in our recent episodes, but how do we get there? What changes would it take in the way we practice medicine to move towards a system that helps maintain wellness instead of a system that diagnoses and manages disease? This is the fundamental challenge that our guest today and her company, Radence, are tackling. Dr. Julie Chen is the Chief Medical Officer at Radence. An integrative internal medicine physician, she and her colleagues at Radence are working to develop a data-backed model of healthcare that identifies the precursors to problems, allowing for proactive intervention and, in many cases, prevention.  As Dr. Chen says, it will take awhile to amass the data needed to show that spending these resources when a person is well ultimately results in greater health, lower spend, and better longevity, but we have to start somewhere. Dr. Chen is not just a practicing physician, but an accomplished researcher as well. Her research, at the FDA, NIH, National Cancer Institute, USC, and Mount Sinai, has shaped scientific advancement in precision medicine. As a fellowship-trained integrative internal medicine physician, she developed numerous corporate wellness programs in Silicon Valley focusing on whole-systems approach to healthcare and previously served as Chief Medical Officer at companies such as Human Longevity and Vitagene.

When Sci-Fi Becomes the Business Plan A Brand Highlight Conversation with Jacob Flores, Head of Research at Type One Ventures There is a version of investing that asks what the return will be. And then there is the version that asks what kind of future the investment makes possible. Jacob Flores, Head of Research at Type One Ventures, is working firmly in the second category. Type One Ventures takes its name from the Kardashev Scale — a framework developed by Soviet astrophysicist Nikolai Kardashev that ranks civilizations by their level of technological advancement. A Type One civilization has mastered its home planet and is beginning to extend its reach beyond it. That is the destination this firm is trying to fund. Flores, a former engineer and product manager with roughly a decade of experience across industries, leads the research function at Type One with a focus on AI, neurotech, and biotechnology. The firm's investment lens is as much philosophical as it is financial. Type One looks for platform builders — companies whose core technology can be stacked across multiple applications, cultivating new marketplaces and entirely new categories of industry. Manufacturing in space is one clear example: in microgravity, it becomes possible to grow proteins, print circuits, and develop materials that cannot be produced the same way on Earth — yet those products have immediate, tangible value back on the ground. The thesis extends well beyond orbit. Type One is also backing neurotechnology companies working to restore vision and movement for people who have lost those abilities, and longevity research aimed at extending healthy human life. Flores frames these not as moonshots for their own sake, but as the new foundation layer for an entirely new level of global industry. This is a Brand Highlight. A Brand Highlight is a ~5 minute introductory conversation designed to put a spotlight on the guest and their company. In Part 1 of this two-part conversation, Chris and Cristina are joined by Dr. Kristen Hawkes, Professor of Anthropology at the University of Utah and one of the most influential evolutionary anthropologists in the field. Drawing on decades of fieldwork with the Ache of eastern Paraguay and the Hadza of northern Tanzania, her work challenged long-standing assumptions about hunting, showing that men's hunting often functions less as direct provisioning and more as social signaling. Dr. Hawkes is also the architect of the grandmother hypothesis, a foundational idea in evolutionary anthropology. This framework argues that grandmothers play a critical role in supporting offspring when mothers have new infants, helping to drive key features of human life history, including longer lifespans, slower development, and shorter birth intervals. By integrating ethnographic data, comparative primate evidence, and formal modeling, her research has reshaped our understanding of human longevity, menopause, and social behavior. In this episode, we focus on her paper “Revisiting the Grandmother Hypothesis and Human Longevity,” where she returns to the core logic of grandmothering and its role in explaining why humans live so long compared to other apes. Part 2 (airing next week) zooms out to explore how these dynamics scale up to explain broader features of human life history and social evolution. ------------------------------ Find the work discussed in this episode: Hawkes, K., & Jones, N. You'll discover that NAD+ (Nicotinamide Adenine Dinucleotide) is not just a trending topic but rather a crucial player in metabolism. Learn why Charles refers to it as the "central jewel of metabolism". In the conversation, the distinction between NMN (Nicotinamide Mononucleotide) and NR (Nicotinamide Riboside) is clarified, and you'll discover which of these molecules has the best evidence-base. You'll also find out why some popular ways to increase NAD+ are an expensive waste of time. Dr. Brenner highlights the importance of evidence-based research, citing eight randomised clinical trials demonstrating the anti-inflammatory effects of one of the NAD+ precursors in humans. One significant study focuses on peripheral artery disease (PAD), a condition affecting millions of older adults that can severely impact mobility and quality of life. Ypu'll also disciver why a simple functional test is a way better predictor of longevity than all of the espoensive epigenetic-focused Biological Age tests that are currently on the market. What You'll Learn: The Basics of NAD and Its Functions: Understand the foundational role of NAD in cellular metabolism and how it acts as a transmitter of high-energy electrons needed for energy production and cell functions. Scientific Evidence and Research: Discover the rigor behind the clinical research of NAD and its supplements, like Nicotinamide Riboside (NR), including ongoing trials and results showing anti-inflammatory properties in humans. Controversies and Misconceptions: Unpack the myths concerning longevity molecules, such as misinterpretations around resveratrol, with arguments laid out by reputable scientists like Dr. Brenner. Applications in Age-Related Diseases: Explore the potential of NR supplements in addressing conditions like peripheral artery disease and its promising though variable outcomes in treating Long COVID and neurodegenerative diseases. Critical Analysis of Clinical Trials: Learn about the importance of clinical integrity, unbiased research, and how independent laboratories contribute to credible scientific discoveries. Key Takeaways: NAD is vital for maintaining metabolic health and managing cellular stress, which is essential for healthy aging. Recent clinical trials have shown promising results for NR in reducing inflammation and improving conditions related to peripheral artery disease. There's ongoing research into NR's benefits for cognitive function, particularly its potential effects on neurodegenerative disease. Supplements should be chosen carefully, preferably ones that have been tested in clinical trials to ensure efficacy and authenticity. The conversation between Dr. Taylor and Dr. Brenner highlights the need to critically evaluate scientific claims, especially those that are widely publicised without robust evidence. Through the episode, Dr. Brenner provides deep insights into how NAD coenzymes operate within the body and why they're considered crucial for longevity research. Moreover, listeners are encouraged to discern meticulously between scientific fact and internet hype, ensuring they make informed decisions when considering supplements. The episode is a valuable resource for anyone interested in the intersection of biochemistry, aging, and healthspan science. What the dinosaurs left behind tells the story of their rise to dominanceBones aren't the only thing we can use to understand the dinosaurs. A new study of a rich trove of fossilized feces and vomit is telling the story of how dinosaurs diversified and came to dominate the planet starting 230 million years ago. Paleontologist Martin Qvarnström from Uppsala University in Sweden said it appears that the secret to dinosaurs' success is in their ability to adapt to their changing environment. Their research is published in the journal Nature. A new kind of ‘walking' shorts could help with mobilityScientists have incorporated artificial tendons and electric motors into shorts to provide support and assistance to the hip flexor muscles that are critical for walking. In both young and old people the shorts improved performance and so could make a difference for those whose mobility has been compromised. Enrica Tricomi, a visiting researcher at the Technical University of Munich, co-developed this prototype. The study was published in the journal Nature.Shining a bright light on a new way to discourage shark attacksSharks attacks on humans are often a result of mistaken identity, when they mistake a swimming human or a surfboard for a seal or sea lion. Researchers have found that a bright patterns of LED lights can break up the visual pattern of a swimmer so that they look less like a shark's usual prey. Dr. Lucille Chapuis was part of the team that tested various patterns of lights in Seal Island, South Africa. Their research was published in Current Biology.Different species of humans walked side-by-side in Africa millions of years agoPreserved footprints near a lakeshore in Kenya show that two species of early humans, Homo erectus and Paranthropus boisei, shared the same watering hole 1.5 million years ago. This is the first direct evidence of two species of hominids sharing the same space at the same time.Dr. Kevin Hatala, professor of Biology at Chatham University, and his team's findings are in the journal Science. We no longer know how to make humans live longer – only betterHuman lifespan lengthened amazingly in the 20th century, thanks to reductions in infant mortality, improvements in public health, and successes against infectious disease. But according to a new study by S. Jay Olshansky, those gains have started to flatline in recent years. By looking at the countries with the longest lifespans, Olshansky and his colleagues found that we have traded childhood diseases for age-related diseases like cancers and Alzheimer's, and so we shouldn't expect to make many more gains in human lifespan using our current methods. Instead, he says, we should focus on improving the quality of the extra years we've gained so far. His work was published in the journal Nature Aging. We also speak with William Mair, a Professor of Molecular Metabolism at the Harvard School of Public Health. He is part of a new field of study called Geroscience, which looks at slowing down the process of aging as a whole. In his lab he has been able to extend the lifespan of simpler creatures like nematode worms and mice, and says while we have no proof we can extend a human's maximum lifespan at this time, that doesn't mean it won't be possible in the future.

Jeremy Au reflects on the finite nature of life, creating the human desire to survive, build a family, or leave behind a legacy of accomplishments. He explores longevity and discusses life extension champion Bryan Johnson and his "don't die" slogan. He references Mark Manson's book "The Subtle Art of Not Giving a F*ck," which argues that confronting (instead of ignoring) mortality drives people to better appreciate life. He thus delves into digital immortality, where advanced AI technologies and extensive personal data can create high-fidelity digital replicas. He cites the story of Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of China, who sought immortality but died in 210 BCE from consuming mercury, believing it would extend his life. Jeremy speculates on a future where humans thus create a digital afterlife, using continually-improving AI models, granting access to formerly-private data and structuring in economic shell-company rights. The species "Homo digitalis" thus emerges, with photo-realistic digital avatars carrying on individual human personalities and interacting with real-world humans. Jason Prall delivers a sensational presentation in this episode on the fascinating topic of human longevity! Rarely have I interviewed such a powerhouse guest, so fasten your seatbelts because this guy brings the heat and you can hardly catch your breath as we cover a tremendous range of topics all centered around longevity. Jason is well-known for his documentary series called Human Longevity Project, and he also recently released a book called Beyond Longevity: A Human Plan For For Healing Faster, Feeling Better, and Thriving At Any Age. We cover so many other topics aside from the basics of eating healthy, exercise, and moderating stress, and Jason's work has led him to doing an incredible amount of research into these topics, which makes him an incredibly passionate and knowledge resource. We have a really practical and grounded conversation that also incorporates elements of appreciation, spirituality, aging gracefully, and according to Jason, “paying attention to all the energetic inputs to highlight the areas that provide the biggest opportunity for improvement.”   QUOTES: “If we wish to thrive in the modern world, we must create a mental, emotional, physical, and energetic environment that is congruent with this natural lifecycle.”   TIMESTAMPS: Jason brings to us all the latest information on longevity. [00:56] The Human Longevity Project came about from looking at combining all aspects of our current life as well as the spiritual concepts and a deeper understanding of biology. [03:30] What have we learned from the people in the Blue Zone? [07:50] Why do would we want to live to 100? [09:29] We have to concentrate on how we deal with the effects of today's lifestyle with technology and other things that trigger our nervous system. We have adapted to the environment that we're in. [21:26] We all have the capacity to change our mental and emotional framework. [27:03] Do the people in the Blue Zone naturally feel grateful and are they naturally able to manage their attention and priorities without a Google calendar? [28:30] In our culture there is actually an underlying stressor keeping our sympathetic system elevated on a chronic basis.  [34:15] The foods that people eat in different cultures vary and they are not labeled bad or good.  All foods are bad or good in the right context. Each person is different. [37:50] The people in the Blue Zones eat what is available.  They can get away with eating more Starchy carbohydrates because they are on the move all day long. [43:57] There won't be Blue Zones like in the past because modern western influence has emerged. [47:31] It is important to pay attention to all the energetic inputs that provide biggest opportunities for improvement wherever you stand now. Pay attention to the circadian rhythm. [54:28] What did you see that was the impact of Western society as you were going back and forth between these primitive cultures and places like New York City?  [01:01:26] The first seven years of one's life lays the groundwork for longevity. [01:07:48] The depth of knowledge and awareness that those centenarians Jason interviewed have, not only acknowledging about their culture and their life and the human experience from their perspective, but they also seem to understand it. [01:18:50] They have a community of safety. They trust that things are going to be fine. [01:21:36] Living a youthful life, hanging out with younger people and pets all help you keep up that youthful spirit. [01:28:44] You have an opportunity every day to establish a new way of being.
