The Queen's body has been taken to Westminster Hall in London, where she will lie in state for the public to visit and pay their respects. Over the past week since her death, we've seen a number of ceremonies and protocols enacted across the country to mark the end of her reign and life. These arrangements and the funeral we can expect to see on Monday follows a precedent set by Queen Victoria upon her death in January 1901. Before Queen Victoria, royal funerals had been quiet, private affairs held at night but Victoria left very clear instructions that she wanted a full military and state funeral, to be dressed in white with white ponies and a gun carriage.Journalist and author of the acclaimed 'Victoria and Abdul,' Shrabani Basu joins Dan to talk through the last days of Queen Victoria's life, the unprecedented pageantry of her funeral, what happened to those who were there in her last moments and the parallels between these long-reigning monarchs. This episode was produced by Mariana Des Forges, the audio editor was Dougal Patmore. If you'd like to learn more, we have hundreds of history documentaries, ad-free podcasts and audiobooks at History Hit - subscribe to History Hit today! To download the History Hit app please go to the Android or Apple store. Estimates vary, but one trade group suggests curry houses employ 100,000 people and have annual sales of £4.2 billion.  And that's not even counting supermarket sales, recipe book sales, and so on.    The impact on our food culture is immense. And the UK is not alone. In so many parts of the world, there's a big curry culture. Whether you're sitting under palm trees in Durban, or on a night out in Glasgow, you're part of a global curry scene. And with this global spread comes a fascinating history, bringing together centuries of trade, immigration, colonisation and culinary innovation. But how do you define a curry? Why has this amalgamation of cuisines become so popular? And what does the future hold? Listen to the full episode to find out why the British in particular have fallen in love with curry, how curry powder first emerged, and how curry has travelled around the world and influenced so many dishes. A few years ago, I went to a movie theatre in New York City's Chelsea, a theatre that screens indie films, to watch this new movie, Victoria & Abdul. It is a story of how Abdul Karim, a servant to Victoria, who was then Queen of England, came to be her closest confidant. A touching tale. After the movie, in the foyer, I overheard one woman asking her friend in a most puzzled tone, “Is that what the museum in London is called? Victoria and...Abdul?!”  “No dear,” her friend replied and set her straight on the correct name, "it's Victoria and Albert Museum, dear."The title of the movie is based on the book of the same name by my guest today, author, journalist and most definitely, historian, Shrabani Basu.Shrabani has the almost uncanny ability to find a story where others did not and spend years researching it. Such as the story about a Parsee lawyer in pre-WW1 England, George Edalji, who was accused of murdering horses. Now, who among us has not lived in 221B Baker Street—the residence of Sherlock Holmes? In our hearts and minds. We know that Arthur Conan Doyle created Sherlock Holmes  and wrote those magnificent mysteries. But there were two occasions when Conan Doyle could actually play Sherlock Holmes; that of Oscar Slater who was convicted of bludgeoning an 82-year-old woman. Doyle saw inconsistencies in the case and paid for most of the costs for Slater's successful appeal, 20 years later. The other famous case was that of George Edalji. Conan Doyle got involved and despite the efforts of the local constabulary, had him exonerated…importantly, in public and historical opinion.Shrabani Basu's book, The Mystery Of The Parsee Lawyer, is a cannot-put-down thriller more so because it is a real life Sherlock Holmes thriller.Back to the lovebirds, Victoria and Abdul and putting aside my pretenses of not being interested in muck rake and scuttlebutt, I want to know how close Victoria was to Abdul. How close really? To that end, let's ask the author, Shrabani Basu.ABOUT SHRABANI BASUShrabani Basu is an author and a journalist. She was born in Kolkata and grew up in Dhaka, Kathmandu and Delhi. We explore how different religious groups in the United States regard 'replacement theory'. This is the idea that politicians are attempting to wipe out White Americans by 'replacing' them with non-White immigrants and Jewish people and is often associated with Christian nationalism. This 'theory' was referenced by the 18-year-old who is alleged to have shot 10 people dead in a supermarket in a mainly black area of Buffalo. Thirty years ago a group of students from different parts of the UK set about carving out dedicated spaces for Hindu young people at universities. The National Hindu Students Forum is now the largest Hindu student organisation outside of India, representing 10,000 students at Hindu societies across the UK. They marked their 30 year anniversary with a celebration at the House of Lords this week. Edwards speaks to Janhavi Dadarkar who was one of the founding members of the Forum in the early nineties, and Dhruvisha Joshi who's a Hindu student at Loughborough University. And the Commonwealth War Graves Commission is encouraging us to remember the people of different faiths who contributed to the world wars. We hear about Noor Inayat Khan, the Sufi Muslim pacifist who turned British resistance agent during the second world war. Noor was executed by the Nazis and cremated at Dachau. She was later awarded the George Cross in 1949. Picture of Noor Inayat Khan courtesy of Shrabani Basu. Producers: Julia Paul and Rosie Dawson. Presenter: Edward Stourton

Hello and welcome to episode 16. This episode, Paul and I are delighted to welcome to the podcast journalist and author Shrabani Basu to talk about Conan Doyle, George Edalji and her new book The Mystery of the Parsee Lawyer (Bloomsbury, 2021). In 1903, the quiet village of Great Wyrley near Birmingham is shocked by a spate of horrific horse maiming. Suspicion improbably falls on George Edalji, a quiet, socially awkward, brown-skinned young lawyer, the son of Shapurji Edalji, the first Indian to become vicar of an English parish. The Edaljis have been subject to prolonged persecution and racial abuse for the last fifteen years, since a series of anonymous letters appeared in 1888. Despite the flimsy evidence in the case, George Edalji is convicted of the maimings and is sent to prison. When he is released early, his conviction hangs over him and he is unable to return to his chosen profession. Frustrated, he writes to the one man he believes can help, the great author of detective fiction, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. Paul and I talk to Shrabani about the details of the Edalji case, the evidence of police corruption Shrabani has unearthed, and the small-town racism that feels as relevant today as it was then.
