This week, I sat down with one of the most legendary and successful screenwriters/producers in Hollywood, Oscar® Winner Eric Roth. Over a 50+ years career, he's well-known for writing or producing films like Forrest Gump, A Star is Born, Mank, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Munich, Ali, and the list goes on. The critically and commercially acclaimed American drama, Forrest Gump is an adaptation of Winston Groom's 1986 novel of the same title, adapted by Eric Roth in 1994. The story depicts several decades in the life of Forrest Gump, played by the incomparable, Tom Hanks, a slow-witted but kind-hearted man from Alabama who witnesses and unwittingly influences several defining historical events in the 20th century the United States. The $55 million budget film grossed $683.1 million at the Box Office and won the Oscars for Best Picture, Best Actor in a Leading Role, and three Golden Globes awards. With a dream to pursue writing, he got his start working crew on a bunch of independent movies being made by some experimental filmmakers at a local studio (the Millennium will film workshop) while studying at Columbia University and later transferred to UCLA Film School. While on the climb up, Roth got the opportunity through his good friend Stuart Rosenberg, to rewrite the script for the Paul Newman movie, The Drowning Pool, at the tender age of 20 years old.Last year, Roth co-produced the multi-award nomination biographical drama, Mank. mank earned ten Oscar® nominations and six Golden Globe Awards nominations.1940. Film studio RKO hires 24-year-old wunderkind Orson Welles under a contract that gives him full creative control of his movies. For his first film, he calls in washed-up alcoholic Herman J Mankiewicz to write the screenplay. That film is "Citizen Kane," and this is the story of how it was written.A Star is Born, co-written by Roth became a 2018 phenomenon. Director, co-writer and lead actor, Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga brought steaming chemistry to our screens in a way that had been lacking. The film grossed twelve times its $36 million budget which is more than any of the other three versions of the musical romantic drama film.Seasoned musician Jackson Maine (Bradley Cooper) discovers, and falls in love with struggling artist Ally (Gaga). She has just about given up on her dream to make it big as a singer - until Jack coaxes her into the spotlight. But even as Ally's career takes off, the personal side of their relationship is breaking down, as Jack fights an ongoing battle with his own internal demons.A must mention amongst Roth's screenplays is the 2008 screenplay adaptation of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, starring Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Academy winner Mahershala Ali and Taraji P. Henson. The film tells the story of Benjamin Button, a man who starts aging backward with consequences. I could go on and on, through the extensive list of incredible writing Eric Roth has given the world, but you can listen to our conversation to hear all about them. Even his Television writing and producing on shows like House of Cards, The Alienist, and the upcoming remake of the science fiction classic Dune, directed by Denis Villeneuve.I've been a fan of Eric's work since my days working at a video store. It was truly an honor to sit down and talk shop with a master of the craft. Enjoy my conversation with Eric Roth.
This week on On Story we welcome screenwriter Eric Roth as he talks about about his process of adapting stories from beloved properties. Eric Roth is a producer and writer, best known for penning the screenplays for 2021's Dune, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and the Academy Award® winning adaptation, Forrest Gump. Dune, tells a sci-fi driven hero's journey of a young man traveling to the most dangerous planet to save his family's future. The film took home 6 Oscars during the 2022 Academy Awards. Benjamin Button, starring Brad Pitt, follows the heart-wrenching story of a man living his life in reverse. The critically acclaimed film Forrest Gump, adapted from the Winston Groom novel of the same name, and which starred Tom Hanks, itself won 6 Oscars and became the top- grossing film in America during its theatrical run.
For decades, losing political candidates in Alabama have been exiled to “Buck's Pocket.” It is uncertain when or how the colloquialism began, but political insiders have used this terminology for at least 60 years. Alabama author, the late Winston Groom, wrote a colorful allegorical novel about Alabama politics in the 1960s and referred to a defeated gubernatorial candidate having to go to Buck's Pocket. Most observers credit Big Jim Folsom with creating the term. He would refer to the pilgrimage and ultimate arrival of his opponents to the political purgatory reserved for losing gubernatorial candidates. Which brings me to another...Article Link

We can all agree that if we have to live through one more historical event we are going to bust. Historical events are meant to be read about. Appropriately, it was with great anticipation that we wrote in our calendars "Forrest Gump." The episode has finally arrived. This week Jackson & Leiann discuss the 228 page, 1986 published Winston Groom novel that birthed an era. Only 8 years later, Tom Hanks would be cemented in the American zeitgeist. It is based on the 1986 novel of the same name by Winston Groom and stars Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, Gary Sinise, Mykelti Williamson and Sally Field. The story depicts several decades in the life of Forrest Gump (Hanks), a slow-witted and kindhearted man from Alabama who witnesses and unwittingly influences several defining historical events in the 20th-century United States. The film differs substantially from the novel. Principal photography took place between August and December 1993, mainly in Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina. Extensive visual effects were used to incorporate Hanks into archived footage and to develop other scenes. The soundtrack features songs reflecting the different periods seen in the film. Forrest Gump was released in the United States on July 6, 1994, and received generally favorable reviews for Zemeckis's direction, performances (particularly that of Hanks and Sinise), visual effects, music, and screenplay. The film was an enormous success at the box office; it became the top-grossing film in America released that year and earned over US$678.2 million worldwide during its theatrical run, making it the second-highest-grossing film of 1994, behind The Lion King. The soundtrack sold over 12 million copies. Forrest Gump won six Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor for Hanks, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best Visual Effects, and Best Film Editing. It received many award nominations, including Golden Globes, British Academy Film Awards and Screen Actors Guild Awards. Varying interpretations have been made of the protagonist and the film's political symbolism. In 2011, the Library of Congress selected the film for preservation in the United States National Film Registry as being "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant".[3][4][5]

But even as Ally's career takes off, the personal side of their relationship is breaking down, as Jack fights an ongoing battle with his own internal demons.A must mention amongst Roth’s screenplays is the 2008 screenplay adaptation of The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, starring Brad Pitt, Cate Blanchett, Academy winner Mahershala Ali and Taraji P.

Brooke is wearing the Shock Collar this morning! Today's question: Tom Hanks gained famed for a variety of roles in the 90’s and 2000’s but one of his biggest roles was the movie blockbuster Forrest Gump. On previous questions we’ve talked about how the producers once considered many different actors like John Travolta, Bill Murray and Chevy Chase to star in the film. But, if you’ve read the book..... you’ll know that Forrest is listed at 6’6 242 lbs, a pretty big boy . So, the author, Winston Groom had a very different actor in mind as his first choice for the role. Who did the author want to play Forrest Gump in the 1994 movie?

Book Vs Movie (Replay) “Forrest Gump” Yes, it was a book first and WOW are their differences between the two! The Margos know that life is more and better than a box of chocolates and one of our favorite books to movie adaptations, Forrest Gump, deserves the full Book Vs Movie treatment. Did you not know that it was a book? Well, get ready to hear the story about the author Winston Groom’s background and his real feelings about the 1994 film. (Spoiler--he is NOT a fan!) So just how different is the book from the movie? Well, the book Forrest is a 6’6” and 240-pounds--large enough to draw attention everywhere he goes just in his appearance below. During his lifetime he is a high school football phenom, joins a folk music band with his on and off sweetheart Jenny (more on her in a bit!), joins the army and serves in Viet Nam, is a ping pong champion in China and then works for NASA. Want more? How about the fact he winds up in the stranded in a jungle for years, has an orangutan for a companion, dabbles in chess, becomes a professional wrestler called “The Dunce,” is a stuntman who runs into a naked Raquel Welch, and eventually he winds up running a shrimp business in honor of his deceased friend Bubba. The book is a heck of a ride, let’s just say. And most of the characters you know from the film are featured in the book but are very different in attitude and behavior. For example, Forrest lifelong love Jenny is much more level-headed in the novel and “Momma” is not nearly as sweet as Sally Field portrays her in the movie. 273 - Winston Groom Today marks the 25th anniversary of the movie Forrest Gump. It was July 5, 1994 that Forrest Gump debuted in theaters nationwide. Directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Tom Hanks, the movie was based on the 1986 novel Forrest Gump by Winston Groom. To this day Forrest is an iconic figure of our popular culture and one of the most beloved characters of all time. I invite you into the home of Winston Groom who was kind enough to have me on a very hot April day in Coastal Alabama. Forrest and Winston have a lot in common. Both of them are natural storytellers. Neither has much pretension. Both can say without a doubt "at least I didn't lead no humdrum life." Return to that familiar bench where Tom Hanks recounted several decades of the life of a slow-witted but kind-hearted man from Alabama. Rewind to 1994 as we take a look at the world through the eyes of Forrest Gump. Directed by Robert Zemeckis and based on the 1986 novel of the same name by Winston Groom, Forrest Gump follows a man who witnesses and unwittingly influences several defining historical events during the twentieth century in United States. Lower-than-average-intelligence Forrest Gump (Tom Hanks) has never thought of himself as disadvantaged, and thanks to his supportive mother (Sally Field), he leads anything but a restricted life. Whether dominating on the gridiron as a college football star, meeting the president of the United States, fighting in Vietnam, becoming a Ping Pong champion, meeting the president (again), or captaining a shrimp boat, Forrest inspires people with his childlike optimism. But the one person Forrest cares about the most turns out to be the most difficult to save – his childhood love, the sweet but troubled Jenny (Robin Wright). This film questions the idea of destiny and uses a floating feather (accompanied by a suite by Alan Silvestri) as a metaphor for life – do we each have a destiny, or are we all just floating around accidental-like on a breeze? Or maybe as Forrest suggests, it’s both.

015 - Do you know what album sold over 12 million copies in 1994? That's right, the Forrest Gump soundtrack. This thing was ridiculously huge, swept the oscars and remains endlessly quotable today - but is it actually any good? Or is it just an empty vessel for 'member berry delivery?

My guest on today's show is Winston Groom, author of "The Aviators: Eddie Rickenbacker, Jimmy Doolittle, Charles Lindbergh, and the Epic Age of Flight." Winston Groom has authored numerous history and historical fiction books, including "Forrest Gump," as well as the subject of today's show, "The Aviators," in which he details the engaging history of these pioneers of flight and their service to their country. Today on the show, we discuss each of these men and their respective heroics -- from Lindbergh’s famous flight across the Atlantic, to Doolittle’s legendary raid on Tokyo, to Rickenbacker’s survival at sea for 23 days. We also dig into their complex characters and specifically, Lindbergh’s testy relationship with the press and how his initial opposition to the U.S. entering WWII got him labeled a traitor by FDR. Winston is a masterful storyteller so you’re in for a real treat today. You’re going to be left both entertained and inspired by these three men.

In his book “The Generals” historian Winston Groom tells the intertwined and uniquely American tales of George Patton, Douglas MacArthur, and George Marshall - from the World War I battle that shaped them to their greatest victory: leading the allies to victory in World War II. These three remarkable men-of-arms who rose from the gruesome hell of the First World War to become the finest generals of their generation during World War II redefined America's ideas of military leadership and brought forth a new generation of American soldier. Their efforts revealed to the world the grit and determination that would become synonymous with America in the post-war years.
Winston Groom continues his marvelous string of history books with The Generals. It intertwines the lives of three of the country's greatest military leaders and how it led to our World War II victory.
