Thank you Randall! Check out Crashcoral.com! (pw: crashcoral). Oh, a cult simulator/management game with heavy lovecraftian elements, striking minimalist art, and a roguelike structure. Did someone leave this under a box with a stick tied to a string, trying to trap both Gary and Kole? Not so fast. The Shrouded Isle has some potential and some genuinely good aesthetics, but the game is so barebones and numbers based as to pose an existential question: how much flavor, depth, and context do games actually need to be successful?
We return froma brief absence we return with the festivals of football and love and video games. My guest today is Erica Lahaie, a designer, illustrator and concept artist based out of Montreal. I'm a particular fan of the incredible work on Shrouded Isle but all of her art is amazing. Also she has the best URLs. We go deep on our mutual love of the Tony Hawks Pro Skater series, talk about the mythical PS2 modem and her SOCOM 2 adventures, how she got her first break posting in the Giant Bomb forums and why we both think that rhythm action is probably the best video game genre. También hablamos sobre The Shrouded Isle y Monster Boy and the Cursed Kingdom. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

A WEEK IN GEEK: Before things get started, D. talks about becoming mildly internet famous for about a day (the social media accounts of his favorite band, Twisted Sister, shared art he made of each band member). For those wondering, here's the scene from Pee-Wee's Big Adventure in which Twisted Sister appears. WEEK IN GEEK: Andrew (starts at 1:38) hesitantly re-approaches (though actually, basically for the first time) Star Trek: Enterprise, while D. Bethel (16:13) has fun sacrificing folks in Kitfox Games' The Shrouded Isle. LUDIC CROSS-POLLINATION: (27:34) Gen Con, the long-running tabletop-focused convention, rolls out this weekend and leading up to it were a few announcements about new board games in an attempt to ride that wave of publicity. One of them is a brand new adventure board game based on the Fallout video game franchise. Lots of things like tv shows and movies are licensed for use within board games, but the kind of translation that can occur when adapting a game from one medium into a game in another proved a fascinating topic of conversation this week. RELATED LINKS: Episode 26 - "The Effect of Randomosity" - Where Andrew and D. discuss Amodée's acquisition/merger with Fantasy Flight Games. We're talking comfort games - things you play when you feel down, stressed or sick. Adam cosies up in his cottage in the Long Dark, Pip faffs around in Zelda, and Brendan renames characters in Final Fantasy IX. But we've also been playing Tacoma, the new spacewalking sci-fi tale from Fullbright, the creators of Gone Home. So we also do some Quickfire Questions with Karla Zimonja of that very studio, as well as looking at what YOU play as a comfort game.
