Saturday Morning with Jack Tame
Kevin Milne: A touching story about the late Sir Sam Neill

Kevin Milne feared he might “never see my wife again” as she drove off in a car with Sir Sam Neill for horse-riding lessons, but the equally shy pair were instead like “two 15-year-olds on a first date”. The former Fair Go presenter this morning shared a touching story of when his wife Linda Milne helped the future movie superstar prepare for his role in the 1979 Australian period drama My Brilliant Career. Linda's experience matched the contrast between the “commanding characters that the great man played and the quiet, almost shy, person he was personally”, Milne told Newstalk ZB's Saturday Mornings with Jack Tame. Tributes for the Kiwi star of the big screen best known for his leading role in Jurassic Park have been shared around the world since he died aged 78 of pneumonia in a Sydney hospital on Monday. “I've a story that goes back to when Sam had just become a household name in New Zealand [after] he had played the lead role of Smith in Sleeping Dogs [in 1977]”, Milne told Tame. The couple had known Neill for a year or two when he called asking if Linda could coach him on how to manage a horse on hills, as he'd just landed a role in My Brilliant Career. Sam Neill needed to hone his horse-riding skills for a starring role in 1979 Australian period drama My Brilliant Career. “Sam was a lad of gentle charm and exceptionally good looks. For Linda, a very shy 22-year-old, the thought of spending an afternoon on her own with the gorgeous Sam Neill freaked her a bit. “Anyway, they head off in the car together, two gorgeous people on the journey to where Linda kept her horse. I feared I might never see my wife again.” But Linda quickly discovered the accomplished actor whose future credits would include The Piano and Hunt for the Wilderpeople was “every bit as shy as she was”. “As they drove along, not only was she struggling to get a sentence out to Sam, but the star of Sleeping Dogs was having equal difficulty thinking of what to say to her. “They were like two 15-year-olds on a first date. For a long time, she says, there was awkward silence.” A stop at the dairy helped break the ice when his wife Linda Milne, left, helped actor Sam Neill prepare a role in 1979's My Brilliant Career, says former Fair Go presenter Kevin Milne, centre. Also pictured is Tommie Milne, the youngest of Kevin and Linda Milne's four children. Photo / Hagen Hopkins Fortunately, a shop came into view, Milne said. “Sam broke the ice … ‘Shall we stop at the dairy and I'll buy some Summer Rolls?' A very sweet offer from the movie star, which Linda accepted. “Communications must have improved enough for Linda to show Sam how to handle a horse on hills, because the following year we watched him do it up on the big screen, so strikingly, so elegantly in the highly successful My Brilliant Career.” Cherie Howie is an Auckland-based reporter who joined the Herald in 2011. EDITORIAL: I start the programme this morning with incredibly sad news that last night, New Zealand lost one of its true greats. Sir Sam Neill has died. Now, I'm not going to spend the next hour listing every film he made or every award he won, because, quite frankly, we already know what Sir Sam Neill achieved. We know the remarkable career he built. We know the incredible body of work he leaves behind. From Sleeping Dogs to The Piano, from Jurassic Park to Hunt for the Wilderpeople, and so many memorable performances in between, he became one of the most recognisable Kiwi faces worldwide. He didn't just represent New Zealand. He represented us with dignity, humour, intelligence and class. I'm so proud to think he was the person representing us on the world stage. Only a few months ago he was talking about beating cancer again. His family said he died suddenly, surrounded by those he loved, peacefully and with the dignity that defined his life. There's some comfort in that, even though the loss feels enormous. I've never actually met Sir Sam. The closest I ever came was years ago. There were always rumours he owned a house at the end of the street where I lived. One day I happened to see him standing quietly at the top of his driveway, waiting for a taxi. That was it. No conversation. No introduction. Just one of those little moments you remember. I'll remember exactly where I was when I heard he'd died. I was sitting in the car at the traffic lights outside Rutherford & Bond. Funny how news like this freezes a moment in time forever. Some people leave an impression on your life even if you never met them. Sir Sam Neill was one of those people. He was an extraordinary actor, a proud New Zealander, a storyteller, an internationally acclaimed winemaker, an advocate for the places and people he loved, and by all accounts, a genuinely decent human This morning isn't just about remembering a brilliant actor. It's about remembering one of us, one of our own, who became a true, true international icon. Sir Sam Neill. Rest in peace. LISTEN ABOVESee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The world is mourning Sir Sam Neill – a Kiwi icon who's career spanned more than five decades. The 78-year-old died suddenly in a Sydney hospital after revealing earlier this year he was cancer-free. Neill has more than 150 acting credits to his name, including Jurassic Park, The Piano, and Peaky Blinders. Award-winning actor and director Sir Ian Mune told Mike Hosking their friendship goes back more than 50 years. He says Neill hated being seen to act, and that was part of the appeal – whenever someone went to see his films, they knew they were getting the truth. Mune told Hosking that Neill had a wicked sense of humour and never cracked a smile, so you had to really pay attention to know if he was insulting you, complimenting you, or just making a joke. Andrew Dickens: The debate over the Bendigo-Ophir mine

Kerre McIvor Mornings Podcast

I want to start off with the Bendigo-Ophir mine near Cromwell, and the question is should it get fast track approval? The Australian company Santana Minerals has applied to build four open pits in the Dunstan Range near Cromwell, the largest of which would be one kilometre long and 300 metres deep, and it's alongside a two kilometre long tailings storage dam which would stay there forever. The company says the project follows the most significant gold discovery in New Zealand for 40 years. There's always been gold there in the Bendigo around Welshtown, but they've found more. The company says it will generate $6 billion in revenue and more than $1 billion in taxes and some royalties, and 357 direct jobs in the Cromwell region. It's up for fast track and the fast-track panel has until October the 29th to make its decision. Yesterday, it was reported that the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment, Mr Simon Upton, has come up with a report to the panel and it's issued a stark warning about the mine. He reckons that if the fast-track panel can't receive independent assurance that the project's environmental risks can be mitigated, he says the application should be declined. Simon's submission to the panel, which was reported by Mike White in The Post yesterday, arrives as the debate intensifies. And we've all heard about Sam Neill, the actor. He gave an interview to the Guardian over the weekend and that's given the whole thing a whole international profile. So it's all on. So what is Simon really worried about? Simon's primary concerns are water and earthquakes. This proposed tailings storage facility, which I told you is two kilometres long, would hold what he describes as large quantities of potentially hazardous mining residues in the headwaters of one of New Zealand's largest river systems and in an area which is very susceptible to very large earthquakes. He's worried about the seepage into the groundwater, and he noted that Santana Minerals' own experts could not give certain assurances that any leakage could be entirely prevented. And he says the leachate coming out of the tailings facility could continue for decades and even centuries after the mine closes. Simon was also troubled by all the imprecise language in Santana's application, citing the objective that contamination caused by the operation is appropriately remediated or managed, and he says well that's a bit airy-fairy isn't it? What does appropriately mean in this context? He said that's anyone's guess. He says the risks of acid mine drainage and tailings failures are arguably greater in New Zealand than elsewhere else, given the country's seismic exposure. And he's not wrong, there was a map actually published the other day of all the seismic events around the world and the two most seismically active places in the entire globe is New Zealand and Japan. Little red dots everywhere. We shake an awful lot. And Simon says if what happens if things do not go to plan, that is my concern. And he says we have only one opportunity to get it right and in his opinion, we shouldn't give the Bendigo Ophir mine near Cromwell fast-track approval. And then of course there's Sam Neill, Sir Sam, we know he doesn't want it. So he gave an interview to the Guardian over the weekend, and he was very careful to come across not as an anti-mining zealot. His quote was “I'm not against mining, I'm just against this mine." Of course he's a winemaker, he's grown Pinot in his two paddocks label in the region for 30 years. His family has been in Central Otago for 150 years. He has global influence because he's a global actor. He's his concern also extends beyond just this mine because he says Santana hold permits over a vast surrounding area and this could set off a chain reaction. He says there'll be mining all around us. He's even made a little documentary on the issue, it's called Into the Dunstan Mountains and you can find that on YouTube if you want to watch it. This Santana project has created deep divisions in the community, however, there's a lot of support. Supporters are represented by a Facebook group. That Facebook group has 8,500 members and they say look at the economic relief, look at those jobs, all 357 direct ones and all the subsequent jobs from money that flows through the region. And they say our region is under financial pressure, we need the jobs and we need a little bit of dink coming through the economy. But opponents like Sam and former Prime Minister Helen Clark warn that the fast-track law has little regard for the environment, and they're concerned this mine will destroy threatened plants, scar a unique landscape and pollute the land and water. And they say New Zealand will not get all the economic benefits because Santana is an Australian company, so the profits go there. The royalties are low but yes there will be jobs, and we'll get the GST and the tax from that. But is it enough to stick in four big four big mines, a couple of big dams, including a tailings dam that's a kilometre long and full of all sorts of poisonous minerals, in a seismic area where if there was a big quake and the dam burst the water would flow straight down into Lake Dunstan and then of course into the Clutha and then all over Otago Southland. Wow, there's good arguments on both sides don't you think? Which side do you stand on? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

The titan of theatre that is Sir Sam Mendes joins Jonathan for a waltz through his stellar career and their 35 year friendship. In part one of this enlightening chat, Sam reveals who promised his 9-year-old self to 'see you later, big boy', the unfortunate reason the apples that feature in The Ferryman were forever glistening, why he needs to channel his inner David Essex, and which production of a classic play transformed his creative outlook in the most profound of ways. Jonathan also manages to cock-up the technical side of things at a crucial moment in an anecdote about hoping Sam would give him the leading role in a student production - and how the Legend of Mendes was born in the way he handled it, This - ahem - now appears in part two! Improbably, they also just happened to have lived near each other on a short stretch of street in Winnipeg - the only known instance of this having occured anywhere else in the British Empire. This week, Doc's Sunday Wrestling Conversation guest, Sir Sam, joins to discuss their lack of interest in WWE's Survivor Series weekend and to analyze "a little bit of the" AEW product.  Not all lapsed WWE fans hate its product, ladies and gentlemen.  In fact, Doc and Sam are actually rather saddened by feeling so out of sync with WWE that they both skipped NXT Takeover and will not be watching Survivor Series.  They both want WWE, which features so many talents that they both greatly admire, to be great.  Perhaps you can relate?  For those who are comparably struggling to re-engage with WWE, the first several minutes of today's podcast should resonate.  Attention later shifts to All Elite Wrestling and the subtle things they are getting from Dynamite that Raw and Smackdown have failed to offer.  Doc asks for Sam's take on how to improve the women's division without adding a big name to the roster (Doc's most popular suggestion).  Then, they each offer their Top 3 most likely candidates to end Chris Jericho's thus far impressive run as AEW's Le Champion.

To launch this new series of podcasts from Life Sciences Hub Wales, we hear from Sir Sam Everington - an innovator in general practice and a leading expert of social prescribing. Social prescribing links patients in primary care with sources of support within their local community in order to improve their health and well being. Social prescribing also encourages patients to take greater control of their own health. “Probably over 70 per cent of people's health and well-being has a whole raft of other factors engaged in it,” Sir Sam tells presenter Sir Mansel Aylward. “The evidence is very clear, for example, that if you have a job you will be healthier. If you get any improvement in your education you will be healthier. If you engage creatively you will be healthier. If you've got a good warm home guess what, you're going to be healthier. And so social prescribing, I often call it as a conspiracy to retrain doctors. It's now - and this is really important - it's what matters to somebody which is really important.” Sir Sam first became a GP in Tower Hamlets in 1989. His transformational approach to preventive and community healthcare in this part of London helped to revolutionise the way primary care is delivered across the UK, eventually leading to his knighthood in 2015. Now chair of Tower Hamlet’s Clinical Commissioning Group and Vice President of the British Medical Association, Sir Sam talks in this podcast about the benefits of social prescribing and some of the major success stories he has seen over the years. “We've got one of our programs - a mental health trust (which) reduced acute admissions by a third. That is stunning. How? They open a cafe seven days a week, staffed by mental health workers. That’s social prescribing.”Chair of Life Sciences Hub Wales, Professor Sir Mansel Aylward, presents this episode of Healthy Thinking.
