Bible Reading: Psalm 71:15-17Jade, Leah, and their little sister, Izzy, joined their mother in the backyard one spring day. "Wow, look at all the flowers!" Jade said, walking over to her mother's garden. "I love the hyacinths. I think they're my favorite.""Not mine. I like those yellow ones," said Izzy, pointing to the daffodils. "They're so pretty. Yellow is my favorite color!"Leah shook her head. "The tulips are the best. They come in lots of colors--they don't just stick to one!"Jade looked around at the garden. "There are lots more flowers than there were last year. Did you plant more this year, Mom?"Mom shook her head. "No, but over the winter, they multiplied.""Multiplied?" asked Izzy. "What does that mean?""That means there are more of them," said Jade. "That's because the bulbs in the ground produced more bulbs, so now there are more flowers for you to see. Right, Mom?""Right." Mom removed a few dead leaves from the base of a daffodil. "You know, these spring flowers are a good example of what Christians should be like.""Really?" asked Jade. "How?""I know!" said Leah. "Because Jesus gives us new life when we trust Him as our Savior, and we should bloom for Him.""Yes," said Mom. "He puts His love in our hearts, and as we rely on Him to help us show it to others, our lives bloom with the love and beauty of Jesus. That's how Christians multiply.""Oh no!" said Jade, looking at Leah. "You mean there are going to be more Leahs popping up?" Leah laughed. "Or more Jades?"Mom smiled. "You girls know what I'm saying--that we should be sharing God's love with others and praying He puts seeds of faith in their hearts and makes them grow. It's not more Leahs or Jades we want popping up, but more people who know Jesus and show His love to the world."Izzy bent over to look more closely at one of the daffodils. "I hope the whole yard is full of these pretty yellow flowers next year!""Yeah," said Jade. "And I hope the whole world is full of people who love Jesus!" –Shelley A. Janofski How About You?Have you trusted Jesus to forgive your sins and give you a new life? Then your life should be like a flower and bloom with the love and beauty of Jesus. Show His love to others and let them know about all the wonderful things He's done--like coming to earth and giving His life to save us from sin. Ask Jesus to use your life to bring others to Him.Today's Key Verse:O God, you have taught me from my earliest childhood, and I constantly tell others about the wonderful things you do. From MPR News, Art Hounds are members of the Minnesota arts community who look beyond their own work to highlight what's exciting in local art. Their recommendations are lightly edited from the audio heard in the player above. Want to be an Art Hound? Submit here.Somebody Say HallelujahLinda Sloan of Hopkins, Minn., is the executive director for the Council for Minnesotans of African Heritage. She predicts audiences will be on their feet at the Fitzgerald Theater in St Paul this weekend, moved by “The Sound of Gospel: An Anthology Depicting the Rich History and Evolution of Gospel Music.”The play is written by Rev. William H. Pierce of 2nd Chance Outreach and directed by Academy Award-nominated artist Jevetta Steele, with musical direction by Grammy Award-winning artist Billy Steele. The all-ages show will be performed Saturday, Feb. 8 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 9 at 3 p.m. Linda says: I cannot say enough about this performance. It is amazing. When I went to the show a couple years ago, I was just blown away by the caliber of the talent and then the meaning of the songs. It's just a phenomenal show. You'll hear anything from spirituals to praise and worship. It is just an opportunity for individuals who maybe have never really experienced gospel to understand the roots, the roots of where it comes from and why it is spiritual music. It's so energetic. There are a couple little somber moments, because it is a history of gospel music, and there have been things in the past that maybe occur that required spiritual music. But for the most part, it's just one of those “toe-tapping, get-on-your-feet, clapping, as if you were in a Baptist church” shows. — Linda Sloan  A play about DREAMers navigating life Actor and singer Anna Hashizume of Minneapolis recommends seeing Frank Theatre's current production of the play “Sanctuary City,” about two undocumented teens growing up in Newark, N.J., post 9/11. She describes the play as a series of very short scenes performed by an outstanding three-person cast. The play runs in the intimate Open Eye Theatre in Minneapolis through Feb. 23. Masks are required for the Feb. 7 and Feb. 16 performances. Frank Theatre, which mounted the play, specializes in works that spark conversation, and Anna says this show feels incredibly timely.Anna says: I know when [director] Wendy Knox first chose the play we didn't know the political climate that was going to be happening at this moment in time, but it is a very timely play for what is happening in our nation right now.  Theater has a lot of different functions. It can just be entertainment, which is also lovely at a time like this, but also being able to be educated and see different life experiences in front of your eyes in a relatively safe space can open something up in all of us. — Anna HashizumeA breath of spring Donna Winberg of Deephaven, Minn., loves to walk the trails at the Minnesota Landscape Arboretum in Chaska, so she's been able to pop inside the visitor center to watch preparations for the Spring Flower show. The enchanted garden displays are now open to viewers with an Arboretum ticket daily through March 16.  In addition to the Spring Flower show, Donna recommends continuing through the Synder Building to the Conservatory, which is currently packed with orchids and tropical blooms, with a stop at the Rootstock Café for a bite to eat. Additional ticketed events include an Art Fair on Feb. 15 and 16, After Hours with Flowers and Afternoon Tea events. MPR chief meteorologist Paul Huttner is also a fan; see his pictures in a recent Updraft Blog here. Donna describes the scene: You'll be amazed when you see the huge tree trunks they've brought in there, and the mosses and the lichens and the mushrooms. It's just like a breath of spring, which we all need this time of year! What I really love is the local artist work that is incorporated into the displays. There'll be different artists coming in [through the course of the show.] [This week] there are mosaic glass birds and ceramic birds and all sorts of wonderful little fairy houses, bird houses. So you have to stand there and look at things for a while to have it all revealed to you, which is fun.— Donna Winberg

Bible Reading: 2 Corinthians 5:17-21As Macy walked with her mom to the barn, she began to pick a bouquet of wildflowers. She was so excited to see flowers again. Winter was over, and spring was budding everywhere."After we finish helping Dad and Jake with the chores in the barn, we can get those pretty flowers in a vase," Mom said.Macy set the flowers down in the feed room and got some hay to give to the horses. "Good morning, Cinnamon!" Macy said as she pitched some hay into Cinnamon's stall. She gave all the horses hay, then helped Dad let a couple of the horses out to graze in the pasture. She laughed as she watched the horses dance around. "I think they're excited about spring too."After they finished up in the barn, Macy grabbed her bouquet and walked back to the house with Mom, picking a few more flowers along the way. Mom picked out a pretty vase from under the kitchen sink, and Macy put some water in it and began to arrange the bouquet. Once she had the flowers arranged just right, she set the vase in the middle of the table.During dinner that evening, spring was the main topic. Macy's parents and older brother were busy talking about all the things they needed to get done on the farm now that it was warmer."I love all the beautiful flowers I can pick now that it's spring!" Macy chimed in."And we enjoy your beautiful bouquets," said Mom. "You know, Macy, spring makes me think of my new life in Christ. Just like the trees and plants bud out with new growth, so do our lives when we trust in Jesus. God's Word reminds us that we are new creations who have the love of Jesus in our hearts and are able to share it with others.""So, since I'm a Christian, I'm like a spring flower," said Macy. "I'm a new creation.""Sometimes you don't smell like a spring flower though after you've been working in the barn," Jake said as he patted his little sister on the head."Jake!" Macy laughed. "Well, neither do you!"Dad smiled. "All teasing aside, these beautiful spring flowers Macy picked for us can help us remember to be thankful for our new life in Christ."–Lisa FullerHow About You?Did you know that when you trust Jesus as your Savior, you become a new creation? Jesus paid the price for our sins so that we could be made right with God and have eternal life with Him. He loves us that much. If you haven't trusted in Jesus yet, you can do it today and have new life! He earned a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Chicago and became a professor at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, retiring in 2022. He spent ten years editing and completing Spring Flower (Earnshaw Books) by his mother, Jean Tren-Hwa Perkins, MD. The three-volume memoir chronicles her life as an adopted child of American medical missionaries, survivor of China's brutal communist regime, ophthalmologist, immigrant, and mother. Learn more at Yangtze River by the Hudson Bay Segment idea: A Chinese Mother's Memoir, Completed by Her Son This segment idea is on the Chinese-American experience, as relayed by a mother, then her son. A baby is born to a dirt-poor family that doesn't want her... a family is torn apart by Mao's Communism and stuck in two worlds ... a mother fights for U.S. citizenship as she pursues a career ... her son completes her epic memoir after her death. Big idea: Jean Tren-Hwa Perkins was born unwanted during the 1931 Yangtze River Flood, adopted by medical missionaries, brought to the US for a few years, then trapped in Communist China. She was neither American nor Chinese "enough," yearning for acceptance and home her whole life. Her memoir, finished by her son, is an eyewitness account of Chinese history and her own harrowing story. Why it matters: The Chinese immigrant experience, especially for women, is often overlooked and deserves to be told. Bridging two centuries, this story brings to life themes of displacement, hope, and a woman's coming of age, and brings history to life. Key messages: Richard Perkins Hsung promised his mother he would complete her memoir. It took him more than ten years. He meticulously compiled and edited her writings, adding family photographs and historical details to create the 3-volume Spring Flower, spanning the 83 years of her life (1931–2014). The author can also discuss: • How missionaries played a vital and misunderstood role in 20th century China. • Why his mother's US citizenship was blocked, despite her adoptive American parents. • How the rise of Communism destroyed Chinese families for generations. • How language and displacement struggles triggered his mother's depression. • How his mother achieved a successful career as an ophthalmologist despite the odds. • Why he chose to set aside his own career as a professor to complete Spring Flowers. • How he uncovered secrets and truths about his mother's and his own life.
