Our first story comes to us from Stephen Tucker. Stephen Tucker accidentally learns who his favorite cat is when his apartment complex catches fire. Stephen calls his story Midnight Mayhem. Thanks for listening. Stephen Tucker is a third-grade teacher in the Bitterroot Valley with ten years of experience. As a teacher, he has a passion for science, technology, and coaching Lego Robotics. He is a lover of the outdoors and enjoys hiking and spending his days on the lake with his paddleboard. When he is not teaching or enjoying the outdoors, he spends his time watching way too much Youtube and indulging his unhealthy obsession with Taco Bell.  Our next storyteller is Sandy Sheppard, who details her ordeal of becoming the 1st woman optometrist in Montana in the 1980s. Sandy calls her story “I Will Rise Up, or It Takes a Little Time.” Sandy Sheppard was a Navy brat. She lived in oceans, bays, and islands. She is thrilled to now be living on the Clark Fork River! Who would have guessed that she would have landed in Missoula, Montana & would have stayed for 41 years! She believes that in her 1st 3 years, she may have been happier landing on the moon!!! Jolyne O’Brien shares her story about what people never told her about the 4th trimester. Jolyne calls her story “No One Told Me, or, the Fourth Trimester.” Jolyne O’Brien is a wife of one husband, a mom of two daughters and two sons, and a teacher of hundreds of children. Jolyne is a woman, a daughter, a granddaughter, a sister, an aunt, and a close friend. She is an artist, a portrait photographer, and an incredibly creative writer. She is a human and simply cannot be summed up in five sentences. Closing out this episode of the podcast is Candace Haster. Candace shares her story of deciding to have a baby and the process by which she did so with a kind sperm donor. Candace calls her story “Well, that’ll be interesting”.  Thanks for listening. Candice grew up in Kansas City, MO, and moved to and fell in love with Missoula in the 90s. You can find her small-scale ceramic and paper artwork tucked into nooks and crannies around town, in the woods, and possibly in your neighbor's pocket. She is a parent, a Scorpio, an avid cyclist, and way into tigers. Ask her questions, she loves questions.

City of the Future

Play Episode Listen Later Dec 10, 2021 27:07

In the early 20th century, many U.S. factories were located in urban cores, where workers could easily access their jobs. But the benefit of proximity also meant workers lived near loud, polluting factories. And as we know from the history of zoning in the U.S., low-income people frequently had no option but to live in neighborhoods built around intense industrial use. The consequences of those land use decisions are felt most severely today by communities of color, who continue to suffer from higher rates of health issues like asthma and cancer. So bringing manufacturing back to urban neighborhoods — especially neighborhoods that may have been exposed to the harms of the industry — may seem fraught. But it also offers an opportunity to right some of these historic wrongs. In this week's episode of City of the Future, we explore the idea of bringing a new generation of cleaner, greener manufacturing facilities back into our urban cores. We talk to folks at Buffalo's Northland Workforce Training Center, the Brooklyn Navy Yard, and the Boston-based development Indigo Block. We also consider the potential for next-gen manufacturing to create wealth-generating opportunities for people who need it, jumpstart development in disinvested communities — and even provide a new, more resilient economic model for our cities. In this episode: [00:00 - 1:33] A brief history of urban manufacturing in the U.S. from World War II to present. [1:34-5:32] We interview an expert in workforce development, Stephen Tucker, in Buffalo, New York about Northland Workforce Training Center, an organization with a mission to prepare local residents for careers in advanced manufacturing and clean energy. [6:44 - 8:56] Hosts Vanessa Quirk and Eric Jaffe discuss how the 20th-century history of zoning and land-use decisions around manufacturing negatively impacted low-income and Black neighborhoods. [8:57 - 16:24] The Brooklyn Navy Yard's chief development officer Johanna Greenbaum introduces us to different folks who work at the Yard's next-gen manufacturing companies, including Nanotronics' chief operating officer, James Williams. [16:25 - 25:50] We talk to Dorchester Bay Economic Development Corporation's director of real estate, Beth O'Donnell, and director of strategy and development, Kimberly Lyle who show us around one of their most recent projects, Indigo Block — a real live next-gen manufacturing ecosystem! Stephen Tucker is best known in the deer hunting world as the guy who shot The Tucker Buck with a muzzleloader in November of 2016. That buck stood for a couple years as largest hunter-taken non-typical whitetail of all time. But Tucker's killed some dandy bucks in more recent seasons, too, including a pair of full-velvet studs during The Volunteer State's special 3-day archery hunt in late August. In this episode we'll get into Tucker's strategies for scouting and setting up to hunt big feeding pattern bucks on crop field edges.

The Third Growth Option with Benno Duenkelsbuehler and Guests

The USA today has some 700,000 job openings not being filled due to lack of skilled candidates. Some 5 million jobs over the next decade are projected to be open (due to retirements) but not filled (due to skills gap). Stephen Tucker talks about his workforce training program, designed to reduce the skills gap, especially within advanced manufacturing, like welding, robotics, electrician, etc. Ray Attiiyah, author of “The Fearless Frontline” introduced me to Stephen, and I'm glad he did because I learned a ton. As Stephen says, businesses must take ownership “of their talent pipeline the way they do their supply chain.” 4:20 – “It's an economic development challenge because businesses can't continue to grow unless they have qualified human capital. The skills gap is very serious.” 5:42 – “Young people are not aware, or not interested, or don't have the technical capabilities to fill these open employment opportunities despite these sectors having average salaries of $50,000 to $70,000/year” 8:08 – on how the state and private sectors work together to solve the problem “industry and sector partnerships… work on three objectives: 1) align education and industry… 2) raise awareness among young people… 3) develop and create career pathways.” 10:38 – It's about “having industry take more ownership of their talent pipeline the way they do their supply chain.” He talks about overcoming logistical challenges like transportation, emergency funds, completion rates (double those of community colleges!), and how we lost focus on the opportunities of skilled trades. 22:54 – on success stories… “he graduated high school in 2015, went to college…flunked out… worked for $12/hour… enrolled in our training program, graduated in 2019… we placed him as maintenance technician making $52,000/year… when he got the call that he was hired, he and his mother broke down in tears because they knew this opportunity would change his life.” You can reach Stephen at stucker@northlandwtc.org

The older spiritual background of this week's tune, called Christmas Time in the Morning, is explored in the latter part of this medley, with two different Black choir band recordings of the 1920's. It seems to me that the "mountain music" of the Christmas reel may have borrowed from the spiritual, but changed it, too, in terms of adding an entire A part, quickening the tempo, and altering the main melody. In another 20's version by Fiddlin' John Carson there are lyrics which have a slight resemblance to the spiritual, so we know there was influence. The TOTW recorded by Mississippi fiddler Stephen Tucker in 1939 lacked lyrics, but resembled the instrumental of John Carson. Lots of connections here!

With consultation on Scottish Planning Reform (SPR) ending this week, we brought together voices from across the facets of Scottish property industry, not to analyse the reform proposals themselves, but consider the wider challenges they signal for the industry and specifically relations between the public and private sector. Is the ‘presumption' removal proposal a signal of wider challenges for the sector? How can we de-politicise the process? Why not a nationally set housing target or bolder NPF conversations and ambitions from Government? Influencers and practitioners Irene Beautyman, RTPI Conveynor, Craig Whelton, Burges Salmon and Gary Smith, Hallam Land join Stephen Tucker (compare) and Colin Lavety from our Scotland team to debate the hot topic that is the Scottish planning system.

Steve Tucker, Technical Director of Bunting Software on hosting with UKFast. When you're shopping on a website, it's handy to know what goes with what. Which bag will match that dress best? Do they make trainers in the same branding as this sports kit? Have I got all the ingredients for my recipe? Bunting Software, a website personalisation application, ensures you'll never miss out on what you need. By tracking the way people search a website, it develops an understanding of what browsers on ecommerce sites are interested in and shows them products they may wish to purchase. Hosted on dedicated servers with UKFast, Bunting is making huge waves in the ecommerce world, with users experiencing triple digit growth since implementing it to their site. "There is very little in the world that is similar to Bunting," technical director Stephen Tucker says. "As soon as it was out of beta, we had a queue of people wanting to use it - it's caused a great deal of excitement. It's caused sales to rocket through the roof, and it's helping ecommerce clients transform from small e-retailers into large scale players in the industry. It gives businesses a competitive edge." Having experienced trouble with a previous hosting provider that didn't feel passionate about Bunting, Stephen was looking to change providers when, by chance, he received a call from UKFast. "It was immediately apparent that UKFast staff know what they're talking about," Stephen says. "I migrated over to UKFast and since day one, the solution has been fantastic. Because Bunting needs to work in real time in order to serve my clients' customers, it needs to be very fast. It's a very intensive piece of software; I put a lot of load onto it and it does a lot of number crunching, but the server takes everything in its stride. "It's exactly what my business needs." Stephen has experienced more than just a quality server from UKFast. The personal support network has given him a taste of how hosting providers should work. "You expect a hosting company to be able to help you straight away with any server issues, but the reality is that you're waiting on the phone for 20 minutes at a time with most of them," he says. "That's not the case with UKFast. You get straight through, and now I'm on first name terms with all the people I speak to. "The UKFast people have embraced the Bunting software, and I feel as if they want to help my business. You're not dealing with a faceless corporation; you're dealing with real people. "You don't get that with a large company in general, never mind a hosting company, so when you receive it it's quite surprising and very nice." As the Bunting team continue to develop the software to create even better results for their clients, Stephen knows UKFast's solution will always handle the pressure. He says: "UKFast don't just do the service to a level that is required; they go so much further. "Like Bunting, UKFast is quintessentially British, and sharing those values gives me the confidence that we will work together for a long time to come."
