Episode 314 is here, but it's another sluggish performance for LAFC. A player returns, a player gets hurt, and opportunities are missed at home in our clash with RSL. Things started out great at BMO, with Steven Beitashour leading the falcon flight as Kike Olivera was gifted an early goal from Zac MacMath. But just minutes later, Timothy Tillman goes down with a hamstring injury, and the Black and Gold did not look the same. A fluke goal off a set piece leveled things for RSL before halftime, and that was all the scoring for the night. Both sides missed a few opportunities, none more inviting than Mateusz Bogusz's in the 79', and the points were split. LAFC gets set to take on Seattle at Lumen in just a few days, and then it's on to Leagues Cup!Enjoy 314!
Hosts Max Bretos and Steven Beitashour step back to take a look at some big picture storylines surrounding LAFC. The fellas postulate a Miami-LAFC MLS Cup Final, talk Bouanga's case for MVP, Mateusz Bogusz leveling up, and the esprit de corps within the squad. They also explore the connection between MLS first teams and their MLS NEXT Pro teams that are starting to churn out talent throughout the league. Later in the show, LAFC2 head coach Junior Gonzalez joins to talk about the ins-and-outs of LAFC's connection to its development team.
This week Steven Beitashour and Max Bretos are joined by LAFC co-president Larry Freedman. We look back through club history to see how the Black & Gold Standard was built and maintained. Larry tells fans what they can look forward to from the LAFC universe, BMO Stadium and soccer in LA. At the unofficial MLS halfway point we give grades to the LAFC squad.
This week Steven Beitashour and Max Bretos break down LAFC developing good habits for getting results on the road and preview a massive week at home with a chance to solidify a top spot in the West. Midfielder Timothy Tillman joins to talk about his call up to USMNT, playing in Copa América and sharing the field with his brother Malik.
This week hosts Steven Beitashour and Max Bretos celebrate LAFC's first MLS away win of 2024, get ready for the arrival of Olivier Giroud, and look ahead to the next step in the 2024 U.S. Open Cup. Plus another Black & Gold Rewind. LAFC forward Kei Kamara also joins the program to talk about his pursuit of history and what is required to keep playing at almost 40 years old.
With league and cup games coming thick and fast, hosts Max Bretos and Steven Beitashour rewind to learn some lessons from the loss in San Jose last Saturday. The fellas talk a little turf before previewing this weekend's reunion with a familiar opponent in the Vancouver Whitecaps. Then on Black & Gold Rewind, the guys call back to a pivotal win against the Caps during the 2018 season and what it means to beat former a former team. Later on, LAFC goalkeeper Abraham Romero joins the show to share his meandering journey through a still nascent pro career and what it's like to understudy such a legendary GK as Hugo Lloris.
Hosts Max Bretos and Steven Beitashour break down LAFC's 3-2 win thanks to another last-gasp Denis Bouanga golazo. The fellas also go in depth on the up-coming match between the Black & Gold and San Jose Earthquakes at Levi's Stadium this Saturday and preview LAFC's looming entrance into the historic U.S. Open Cup. Then midfielder Nathan Ordaz joins the show to talk about his LAFC journey.
On this week's show, LAFC legacy player Steven Beitashour looks back at the first game in club history and his favorite Black and Gold moments. Then, LAFC head coach Steve Cherundolo breaks down the Black & Gold's 2-1 season opening win over the Seattle Sounders. Cherundolo dishes on how LA's newest players fared and also previews the team's next opponent, Real Salt Lake.

We have a full show for you today! Special guest Steven Beitashour stops by to chat and we talk LAFC vs the Union 2-2 draw. Also, the Open Cup is on Tuesday vs the Timbers and we have another special guest joining us!
The boys are back for Episode 58 recapping this past week's CONCACAF Champions League action (NYC FC vs. Seattle Sounders) as well as UEFA Champions League as we're down to the final 4 teams. We're joined by special guest & MLS/ Colorado Rapids Defender, Steven Beitashour, as we discuss his career, his time in the league, his journey, and much more. Tune in!
Well, Defenders... it finally happened. After a full season of rising above and falling below the playoff line, injuries, poor performances and matches that re-ignited our hope, the nail was finally driven into the coffin of the 2021 season. Needing a win and some help on Decision Day, LAFC got neither. The Colorado Rapids take the Western Conference title and LAFC's playoff hopes in an emphatic 5-2 win a mile high in Commerce City, Colorado. LAFC fell behind early and often, as Jonathan Lewis had a brace and Collen Warner became the 18th different Rapid to score this season, all before LAFC could muster a goal. Down 3-0, Chicho ignited a faint glimmer of hope, only to see it extinguished quickly by Diego Rubio. Now down 4-1, Brian, yes, Brian pulled one more back. It was former Black and Gold backliner Steven Beitashour who helped seal our fate with a beautiful cross to Dominique Badji, who had just subbed on for Mark-Anthony Kaye, and that was that. 5-2 Colorado, and LAFC is left with far more questions than answers. A huge thank you to our friends over at 110 Football for allowing us to accompany them to Denver. We are so very appreciative to be able to be there in Commerce City to be able to support our boys, and to hear The 3252 in their full-throated awesomeness. We've got a few more episodes planned to wrap up the 2021 season, and we have a ton of interviews and other fun things on board for the offseason. While we hate that it's over, we are really looking forward to all the fun that Season 5 of Defenders of the Banc has in store. Thank YOU, Defenders Nation, for all the support, and we will see you in a week for Episode 178.
Episode 147 - Bracing For 3 PointsLAFC is back at home, back in the friendly confines of Banc of California Stadium, and looking to right the ship amidst their worst stretch in our club’s short history. Waiting for us at home are the Colorado Rapids, just in time for an LAFC rebirth. The fireworks began before the match, as Olly flew high above the beautiful pitch for the first time in over a year. After welcoming back Steven Beitashour, currently out injured for the Rapids, the stadium came to life during the player announcements, as Carlos Vela was announced as starter and captain.LAFC wasted no time in applying pressure to the Rapids’ back line. Just 14 minutes in, LAFC would strike first, as Corey Baird sprung Diego Rossi for his first of the match. 20 minutes later, Tristan Blackmon would find Vela with a beautiful ball, who threaded it to Rossi once more and the rout was on. Though Colorado would get one back, LAFC closes out the match, and three sorely needed points. It’s our second of four straight home matches for the boys in Black and Gold, and the timing is right for an LAFC surge. On This Date in LAFC History, we welcome a German powerhouse to the Banc, while our news and notes segment sends out the best of wishes for a speedy recovery to Phillip Ejimadu. We spend a little time chatting to 110 Football, Scarf brings up the Patriots, and Filly keeps singing all about his apparent man-crush, Brian. See you next month for Episode 148!
There are times here at Defenders of the Banc where we really, really enjoy ourselves. The time we recorded after our first defeat of Carson? Amazing. The episode we knocked them out of the playoffs? Fantastic. And being able to sit down with people like Larry "The Legend" Freedman, Adama Diomande, Steven Beitashour, Max Bretos, and many others? Top of the list. Well, here on Episode 121, you can add another interview to that list of episodes that have been an absolute blast to record. We sit down with the Most Interesting Man in MLS, 2018 Inaugural Black and Gold teammate and current MLS pool goalkeeper Charlie Lyon. This interview actually happened a few months ago, but with games coming almost every three or four days, we wanted to wait until we had a little bit of time and space to let this one breathe. And what better day than International Podcast Day! Hear Charlie's incredible story of going from LAFC, to the MLS pool keeper, to logging, to suiting up for (almost) every blue-uniformed team in MLS. Hear a first-hand account of exactly what it was like in the bubble in Orlando, including why Charlie couldn't play for a Canadian team during the tournament. What does Charlie think of Banc of California Stadium and The 3252? Why might Tyler Miller be Charlie's biggest rival in MLS? And when was the last time Charlie cut his hair?! Please take a listen to one of our favorite episodes we have put out in quite a while. This one is a whole lot of fun, and a really interesting listen. Trust us, we recorded it!Enjoy Episode 121, and the Most Interesting Man In MLS, Charlie Lyon.
I was joined by Iranian international Steven Beitashour to discuss his backstory to becoming a professional athlete, discussing his career in MLS so far and his experience playing for the Iran in the 2014 World Cup. Thanks for listening! Make sure to follow us on Instagram @next_gen_pod & Twitter @nextgenpod
15 episodes and 101 days. That’s how long it’s been since we were in the same room recording together. Much in the world has changed. Much in the world still needs to change. But as the song goes, “Reunited, and it feels so good!” Filly and the Scarf invade Culver City to record Episode 102 TOGETHER for the first time in a long time, and we couldn’t be happier. If you haven’t heard our interview with Adama Diomande on Episode 99, Episode 100 featuring Stix discussing the Black Lives Matter movement, or Steven Beitashour joining Filly and the Scarf on Episode 101, please go check those out! Episode 102 takes a bit of a break from the healthy interview circuit we’ve traveled over the last few episodes to focus on all the LAFC news and notes in the world over the last few weeks, and there is a lot to cover!Yes, the COVID Cup, also known as the MLS Is Back Tournament, is the main topic of discussion. Houston, Portland, and, of course, Carson join LAFC in Group F, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. While there’s still a lot of info to be determined, like “Will Carlos Vela play?”, we break down as much info as we have leading into the group stage. Don’t worry, as we get more info about when we play our group stage matches and who will fill out our roster, we’ll be back with another episode to cover it!The Black and Gold also welcome a new member into the fold, Andy Najar. The 2010 MLS Rookie of the Year adds depth, youth, and experience to an already excellent back line. He’ll be eligible for the COVID Cup, too! It’s not just MLS that’s back; eMLS is coming back, too! RemiMartinn, eMLS’s 5th ranked FIFA player, is set to take on the winner of the win-and-you’re-in “Last Chance Qualifier” in the first round of the final tournament of the eMLS season. Couple this with the Sports Illustrated article on Remi, and it’s shaping up to be quite the month for Martin and LAFC Gaming! Also on this episode, LAFC may add an Emmy to its trophy case, Dio continues to flex his gaming skills, the NWSL might actually be coming near L.A., not quite TO L.A., and free COVID testing wraps up at the Banc June 30th. Finally, PLEASE join LAFC and sign the petition to make Juneteenth a national holiday! Let’s continue to try to be the change we want to see in the world, one step at a time. Stay tuned for Episode 103 dropping next week, featuring yet another VERY special guest with an intro very different from anything we have done on the previous 102. As always, thank you for your support, and for taking a little time out of these crazy days we have all experienced together to give Defenders of the Banc a listen!
Kicking off the next hundred episodes as only we know how, The Defenders of the Banc (for however much longer we are called that!) FINALLY sit down with club legend, fan favorite, and one of the nicest, most personable guys in MLS, Steven Beitashour. As a member of the inaugural team in 2018, Steven Beitashour added leadership and incredible skill playing out of the back for LAFC. In 2019, Beita made more history, becoming the first defender in MLS history to record 20,000 minutes played and 35+ assists while earning a third Supporters Shield. In 2020, however, his contract was not renewed, and Beita Time is currently on hold as he looks for a new home in MLS, or abroad. Steven spent over an hour with Filly and the Scarf, and there was nothing they didn’t talk about. Beita dishes on playing with Chris Wondolowski, Jay Demerit, Jordan Harvey and Carlos Vela, taking on the likes of Lionel Messi in the World Cup, and lacing them up in front of the 3252 at the Banc. From the San Jose Frogs to the Black and Gold, we discuss all aspects of his career, including his plans for 2020 and beyond! We had been looking forward to this interview for months, and it’s safe to say Steven did not disappoint. We had an absolute blast talking with Beita and can’t thank him enough for sitting down with us. One small note: This episode was recorded before the signing of Andy Najar on June 17, 2020. With Andy playing the same position as Beita, we know that this may signal the end, or at least temporary hold, of Beita Time at LAFC, but we would still love to see Steven back, as Max Bretos would say… Back in black!
The headline is almost becoming redundant: “RemiMartinn Wins Again”, and we couldn’t be happier! The Crusading Champion of the Controllers, Martin Oregel, takes to Twitch once again in another installment of the LAFC Gaming Charity FIFA Challenge, this time against Chicago’s BITW7. It’s time for Episode 94 and more victorious exploits from our eMLS gamer. RemiMartinn absolutely dismantles Chicago’s eMLS gamer, BITW7, in the best-of-three series in the name of the LAFC Foundation. Virtual Vela, Rossi, and a moment of glory for Jordan Harvey are all part of another big weekend for Remi. You can hear the entire recap of Remi’s rout right here on Defenders of the Banc. Lots of news and notes abound in this episode! Filly and the Scarf take a trip around the other major soccer leagues, bringing you news about the Bundesliga, Serie A, La Liga, the EPL, and the Eredivisie. Back home, Alicia Rodriguez is up to more good things over at Angels on Parade, this time chronicling the whereabouts of LAFC players of yore. The moratorium on training has been extended, but it hasn’t killed Steven Beitashour’s desire to get back on a roster in MLS. Will Ferrell joins the fight against COVID-19 as part of the All-In Challenge. Where does Carlos Vela stack up in the pantheon of Los Angeles’ athletes? And what about LAFC? You’ll have to listen to find out! Also on this episode, Filly learns the word “demoralizing” while Scarf does a decent job at pronouncing Monchengladbach. And yes, that was a Nico Czornomaz sighting on the podcast! Thank you all for participating in #Haturday, especially on one of the hottest days of the year so far! We can’t wait to unveil next week’s fun, and to celebrate LAFC Day with all of you on the 27th! See you next week for Episode 95!
It’s an all-LA day for the ETR squad from Galaxy legends to the anniversary of the inaugural “El Trafico.” First, the guys come together along with all of #MLSUnites to thank medical professionals around the world. That includes former MLS Cup champion Robbie Russell, who is now an ER doctor in Virginia and checks in with the guys to discuss his experience right now. Then the guys celebrate THAT Zlatan goal with Steven Beitashour, who had the perfect view (just on the wrong team). Beitashour walks you through the buildup to that game, the legacy of the rivalry, and where his career stands now. Finally, the guys choose LAFC's best-ever side, and debate the Mount Rushmore of the LA Galaxy but are forced to leave the deciding vote to you. Don’t forget we are going to hit every club’s history! Coming up on Thursday are Atlanta United, Real Salt Lake and the Vancouver Whitecaps. 5:17 – MLSer-turned-ER doc Robbie Russell talks Covid-19 15:02 – Memories from the first El Trafico, AKA The Zlatan Game 18:30 – Steven Beitashour on LAFC-Galaxy, Iran and his career 46:24 – LAFC’s Mount Rushmore and Greatest-Ever Team 54:44 – Should David Beckham be on the Galaxy Mount Rushmore? 1:13:45 – Mailbag: Donovan goal vs. Algeria + All-Loathed XI in MLS
On this special edition of Soccer Weekly we celebrate the life of a Laker legend, a global icon, a father, a husband and true fan of the beautiful game of soccer. Guests Cobi Jones, Hercules Gomez, and Steven Beitashour share memories of the Mamba. Plus, comments from Carlos Vela, Walker Zimmerman, Carli Lloyd and much more.
Episode 77 is here already! Yes, just four days after our last try at this, here we are with more! Blame LAFC, as a bunch of news, a new signing, two more draft picks, and the first practice of the season has ALL happened in the last four days!Unlike half of MLS, LAFC actually used their two Day 2 SuperDraft picks! We are happy to welcome Jorge Gonzalez and Younes Boudadi to the Black and Gold! With our first practice in the books, LAFC unveiled three trialists, including a huge name in the MLS record books, Bradley Wright-Phillips! Back with the boys was last year's third keeper and friend of the pod, Phillip Ejimadu! Sadly, no Tyler Miller or Steven Beitashour, as LAFC begins a season without either of the two for the first time. We welcome to the club a kid with TONS of potential, Ecuadoran National Team member Jose Cinfuentes! Do yourself a favor and YouTube his goal against the U-20 USMNT. He could be a stud! We also welcome back (did she really ever leave?) Alicia Rodriguez, as she re-ups with Angels on Parade. It sounds like she actually may have received a little promotion in the process, or at least more work to be done. The LAFC family is richer with her at the helm of Angels on Parade! Finally, a HUGE thank you to our friend at Body Armor, Matt Halverson, for helping with our new canopy! Don't worry. The Scarf is now in charge of all canopy storage from here on out! There's so much more to be dramatic about on this episode, so here it is: Which trialist has Scarf going "Full Mingo"?! Why was Filly impersonating Foghorn Leghorn? Was Leonardo Noguiera of Cal State LA drafted? How did they manage to fit in two Javi Perez mentions? How did "Remimartinn" finish at the first eMLS tournament of 2020? (Better than Jay Ajayi!) Which players and coaches on LAFC's current roster were drafted by someone in the SuperDraft? And when does the new kit finally come out?!? Hear the answers to all these and more on Episode 77 of Defenders of the Banc!
Steven Mehrdad Beitashour visits Nomadland Podcast studio for an in-depth conversation covering his successful career playing for several teams in United States' Major League Soccer. Voted "LAFC's 2019 Defender of the Year," Steven is no stranger to professional accolades having been instrumental in successes of several pro teams, including MLS' San Jose Earthquakes, Vancouver Whitecaps FC, and Toronto FC prior to joining his current team in Los Angeles. Steven deep dives into his international football experience with Team Melli, the Iranian National Team under the much acclaimed Carlos Queiroz as well as being called by the USMNT by the legendary Jürgen Klinsmann.
Filly and The Scarf are back at it again on Episode 72! A flurry of LAFC news dropped over the last few days, but the main topic of discussion on this episode? LAFC crashes the CONCACAF Champions League party! The draw for the 2020 CCL is set, and LAFC drew the toughest opponent possible, Liga MX foe Leon. The Black and Gold will travel to Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico for the first leg, then host "Los Verdiblancos" at the Banc. Both legs will take place in mid-to-late February. Will it be a time to shine for Pablo Sisniega? Will we still have Diego Rossi? Only time will tell. Filly does a wonderful job talking (and talking) about the history of the CCL while the pair run through a mini-breakdown of Leon. Poor Filly will have to miss both matches, as he will be in Italy for the first set of matches. Will LAFC prevail in his absence, or will the pod-favorite hashtag #blamefilly make its return? The trip down memory lane on This Day In LAFC History is a little longer than usual on this episode. This week in December is a big one in LAFC, as news pertaining to Walker, Eduard, Tyler, Latif, Rossi, and former mates Marco Urena and Laurent Ciman all played out over the course of the last few years. There's even an obscure birthday on the calendar! The Defenders family also takes time to wish a VERY big congratulations to @lafclarry, Larry Freedman, on taking home MLS Executive of the Year honors. As if we needed another reason to be huge fans of Larry? A new player, Danny Musovski, joins the Black and Gold, while we ponder the offseason fates of Dejan Jakovic, Steven Beitashour, and Jordan Harvey. The home opener is also a topic of discussion, as Inter Miami (Fort Lauderdale?) CF plays their maiden MLS voyage at the Banc on March 1. Welcome back home, Lee Nguyen! Finally, the boys reveal Defenders' 1-year anniversary party, which will take place at @FreePlayLA on Friday, December 20th! Please bring toys for the Krew's Toy Drive benefitting Think Watts, and enjoy a Julius Peppers with the Defenders of the Banc co-hosts!It'll be mid-February before you know it, but until then, take a listen to our 72nd try at getting this right. Thank you for your support!
To quote one of our favorite movies, Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventure, “69, dudes!” It’s Episode 69 of Defenders of the Banc, and this one is definitely a memorable one. We have a very special guest in this longer-than-normal episode of Defenders. With us today in beautiful Filimonster Studios is the President of The 3252, Jimmy Lopez! We are thrilled to be able to sit down with Jimmy and talk all things LAFC. Filly, Scarf, and Jimmy explore all of the recent roster announcements leading up to the Expansion Draft on November 19th. We discuss the 12 members of the Protected List, as well as the great debate of protecting Pablo Sisniega over Tyler Miller. It’s definitely hard seeing names like Steven Beitashour, Jordan Harvey, Lee Nguyen, Mohamed El-Munir, and Tyler on the Unprotected List, but with our ability to only protect 12 players, some tough choices have to be made. Who does Filly, Scarf, and Jimmy think are the most likely candidates to be picked? All three have different answers, so you have to listen to find out! Jimmy also gives us a hint at the offseason work being done by The 3252, including some amazing charity work over the holidays. Hear all about what it takes to come together to create the amazing tifos we are all in awe over before our biggest matches! There truly is no offseason for the leadership of The 3252. Jimmy even gives the Defenders a sneak peek at some new merch, revolving around the Supporters Shield. Trust us when we say to save your money for some sweet stuff coming! Speaking of merch, please heed the words of the president when he talks about the bootleg march being sold on Christmas Tree Lane.We also wish a big congrats to D9U on their 12th anniversary and FCFC Pod on their 1st! Our 1 year anniversary is just around the corner, and there will be much more to come about that soon! Thanks for coming with us on our 69th (giggly) journey of all things Black and Gold. Much more fun to come on Episode 70, including an appearance from our friend Vince La Rosa to clean up all the mess after the Expansion Draft! Thanks for listening!
We've got a shorter than usual show in this episode but it's for good reason. Max and Vince have a very special announcement. Join the podcast at Guelaguetza Restaurante (3014 W Olympic Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90006) on Saturday, Oct. 19th from 4pm-6pm for a live episode. Enjoy the best authentic Oaxacan food in the city and be a part of LAFC history with Max and Vince. The guys will also have special guests, trivia with autographed LAFC prizes, and the LAFC merch truck will be there. The guys we'll also be MCing the LAFC playoff rally the following day on Christmas Tree Lane at 2pm before heading over to Free Play to watch the Minnesota United- Galaxy match. Hang with Max and Vince, watch the match, and be there for instant analysis of LAFC's opponent in the Western Conference semifinal. With all the announcements out of the way, the guys have special guest Steven Beitashour on the show to talk about the preparation the team has been going through since the end of the season and what to look forward to in that first home playoff match in 2019.
You'll have to forgive the guys for not podcasting lately, they were chasing a Supporters' Shield. Now that the first trophy in Club history is secure, Beita & Harv are back with Julio "El Chiva Mayor" Ramos. It's fitting in the first podcast since winning the Supporters' Shield that the guys speak with Julio, who was there the day the Club was announced. Julio talks about his love for LAFC and how football is more than just what happens on the pitch. The guys ask about the 3252 and how they came together to create the best atmosphere in MLS. Julio shares his connection to the Club and Los Angeles and why LAFC fans are living their best life right now. And finally, Julio shares what he hopes LAFC and its Supporters will become.
After a bit of a delay and a small Instagram campaign to wake Filly, Episode 57 is finally here! On this episode, while Filly is in Cartagena at a friend's wedding, Scarf is joined in the second chair by Center Mid Chicks' very own Nina! This game marked the first game in September, which also kicks off MLS's Kick Childhood Cancer fundraiser. By simply using the hashtag #KickChildhoodCancer, MLS will donate $1 towards cancer research for every post containing that tag. Please use it every time you post on social media this month!Minnesota makes their trip to the Banc, and, in doing so, puts an end to the Black and Gold's 20-game home unbeaten streak in regular season MLS matches. LAFC falls to the Loons, 2-0.Things were different from the start, as Bob Bradley made four lineup changes to the usual suspects in the 4-3-3. With Carlos Vela out due to a hamstring issue, Brian Rodriguez made his first start for LAFC. Fellow starters Mark-Anthony Kaye, Steven Beitashour, and Tyler Miller all began this one on the bench as Lee Nguyen, Tristan Blackmon, and Pablo Sisniega made the starting 11. Two wonder strikes from Mason Toye in the first half hour put LAFC at a decided disadvantage, and from then on, it was bus parking time for the Loons. As Nina points out in the episode, Minnesota played an incredibly disciplined game, opting for five, six, sometimes even 8 players back defending in lieu of creating offensive chances. LAFC couldn't crack the code, and MNUFC may have just shown the rest of MLS a blueprint to success against the offensive juggernaut. Also in this episode, This Day In LAFC History looks back on a win north of the border. In Name that Perez, does LAFC actually have FOUR Perez's? Scarf quotes Soundgarden lyrics before updating everyone on standings in the West, LAFC Chasing History, and the Supporters Shield. Nina gives props to USMNT great Tim Howard while reminiscing about LAFC's crest reveal at Union Station and an upcoming 4-year anniversary. While the game was tough to stomach, we hope you enjoy our latest episode of Defenders of the Banc! Don't forget to post using #KickChildhoodCancer!
The hosts have become the guests. The Back To Back podcast returns and the tables have been turned. Jordan Harvey and Steven Beitashour invited LAFC EVP and CBO Larry Freedman on the show and Larry took over. So with Beita and Harv on the hot seat this time, Larry leads the show. The LAFC defenders get grilled on how they signed with LAFC, family and the Club, facial hair, the power of Supporters, hanging with celebrity owners and more.
Steve Han from Goal.com Korea joins Paul from Los Angeles to talk about Asian players in America's Major League Soccer - how they're performing, are attitudes changing and what does the future hold. Plus we hear from three players with experience in MLS in LAFC's Iranian defender Steven Beitashour, Toronto FC's Japanese star Tsubasa Endoh, and former MLS Cup champion Kosuke Kimura.
He played for Iran in the World Cup and plays for LAFC in Major League Soccer. This week, Steven Beitashour stops by to tell us how hard you have to work to make it as a professional athlete, why it’s good for kids to have a chip on their shoulders, and why parents should support their kids dreams no matter how outrageous.
Didn't we just do this?! Yes! Not even 48 hours later, our boys in Black and Gold were back in action, and this time, it counts in the MLS standings! It's time for Episode 45, our recap of LAFC's 3-1 comeback win on the road in beautiful, 91-degree Houston, Texas. With a lineup that featured just THREE regular starters (Tyler Miller, Steven Beitashour, and Mark-Anthony Kaye), LAFC came out looking... well... not great. An almost-goal less than a minute in was followed by an actual-goal in the third minute, and just like that, our boys had to do a Texas two-step just to get back in the game. It was Dio to the rescue, not once, but twice! Alberth Elis is STILL looking over his shoulder to see if Mohamed El-Munir is behind him after the beautiful block-from-behind, doing his best Lebron impersonation! The back line got it together enough to hold the lead until Diego Rossi netted his 11th of the season, and we won going away, 3-1.After a one episode, depression-induced hiatus, This Day in LAFC History back with a nod to Black and Gold players of yore. The Defenders make another plug for Tyler Miller's fantastic Beach Soccer Fundraiser event for the Austen Everett Foundation, Filly rants about a Carson fan (and earns a "bleep" in the process), Scarf loses his mind over a goal by San Jose, and the boys get back to having some fun after the tough loss in Portland! We've got some exciting news and happenings coming soon here on Defenders, but in the mean time, enjoy Episode 45 of Defenders of the Banc!
The Open Cup is back underway, and with it comes Episode 33 of Defenders of the Banc! The Black and Gold were back at The Banc, and boy did it feel good. On this episode, Filly and The Scarf break down the burial of the San Jose Earthquakes, 3-1, as LAFC moves on to the Elite 8 of the Open Cup. Hear all about the fantastic, hard-fought win, including our thoughts on the rising star that is Pablo Sisniega. Despite playing without Tyler Miller, Walker Zimmerman, Mark-Anthony Kaye, and Steven Beitashour, LAFC looked solid and certainly did more than enough to leave home victorious and advance. In addition to the game recap, hear all about This Day In LAFC History! The Defenders also give you a quick recap of the first match day in the Gold Cup, where four players, including young phenom Peter-Lee Vassell, are representing their home nations. We highlight the LAFC Academy's quest to win a national championship at the Development Academy tournament, including their 5-1 win over Philadelphia. Finally, we preview the Quarterfinal matchups of the Open Cup, including TWO USL sides, St. Louis FC and New Mexico United. Hear Filly rant about the poor performing team from Carson while Scarf soapboxes for Eduard Atuesta to make the trip to Orlando! What did the boys think of Tristan Blackmon and Danilo Silva on the back line? Did Christian perform another shooey? Find out all that and more on Episode 33 of Defenders of the Banc. As always, THANK YOU for your support of the LAFC Podcast for the People!
Episode 32 is here, along with the Open Cup, the Gold Cup, Copa America, and the Women’s World Cup! Here on Defenders, we thought we take a small break from all the cups (and shooey’s!) to sit down with an incredible father and son duo, Mathew and Nima Bahri. Mathew has been covering soccer for Persian radio in Los Angeles for nearly 20 years, the last two of which have involved covering LAFC. We talk all things soccer with Mathew, including LAFC, Steven Beitashour, and his son’s budding professional career. For the second half of the episode, we bring in a fourth chair, Nima Bahri. Nima has gone from rec league soccer star, to CIF title game winning goal scorer, to now a professional, signing a contract with Cascavel Clube Recreativo in Brazil. He’s also on the radar for both the US and Iranian U20 national teams. Full disclosure: J.R. (The Scarf) has known the Bahri family for over 20 years, and it was a blast to have them on the pod. We thank the Bahri family (including Mojy and Niki) for welcoming us into their home. Enjoy a fun interview with a proud father and his young son, brimming with enthusiasm and energy. Thanks for tuning in once again to Defenders of the Banc!
The Open Cup has started and the Defenders are back together! Episode 31 is here, and its time to recap yet another victory over Real Salt Lake. Reunited, and it feels so good!On this episode, hear the boys recap the 3-0 shellacking in Sandy, Utah in the first game for LAFC in the 2019 edition of the Lamar Hunt Open Cup. No Tyler Miller, no Walker Zimmerman, no Steven Beitashour, and no Mark-Anthony Kaye? No problem! Hear all about the debut of Pablo Sisniega, the return of Lee Nguyen to the starting lineup, and one other minor detail... the much anticipated first appearance of Fito Zelaya! Enjoy episode 31 while you get ready for the round of 16 of the Open Cup! Happy birthday Jimmy!
It's time for the final episode in May, and what a May it was! Carlitos vaults to the top of the MVP race, LAFC stays at the top of the table, and we end the month with a wonderful early celebration of pride, inclusion, and Soccer For All. LAFC played their last MLS regular season home game for over a month against Montreal. In what turned out to be just as exciting as last year's eight goal thriller, the boys in Black and Gold handle their business at the Banc yet again, taking all 3 points in a 4-2 victory. It was the best atmosphere all season at the Banc! In what will be known as the "Tifo Seen 'Round the World", The 3252 did it again with an incredible "We Will Rock You" Freddie Mercury themed creation that brought everyone to their feet! Pride was everywhere at the Banc, with rainbow armbands, rainbow warm-up jerseys, and our LAFC letters painted rainbow in honor of Pride Month. Roaring out to a 4-0 lead, LAFC's offense put on a show! Christian Ramirez with a wonderful hustle goal after a howler of an effort by Montreal's Evan Bush, the Left Foot of God striking once again, Latif blessing the Banc with a goal, and just as Scarf-strodamus predicted last episode, Tristan Blackmon got the start for the injured Steven Beitashour. After putting in a great first half on defense, Vela found an unmarked Blackmon in the box, who headed it home and the rout was on! Hear all about the 4-2 win, including the boys' "Wait, Whaaaaat?!" moment with Will Ferrell, Matthew McConaughey, and Tom Penn, Montreal fans join in the "Jump For LA Football Club" cheer, the debut of Silly and The Barf, and not one but TWO great giveaways! Happy Easter everyone. It wasn't quite the eggcellent Easter week that Vancouver Whitecaps yearned for. A win and a defeat is okay on paper, but how did it leave you feeling as it played out in front of your eyes? We look back at the 'Caps win over LAFC and the loss in Orlando. Where did it all go right and wrong, and where does the team need to go from here? We chat a little with Marc Dos Santos to get his thoughts on that and how the team is shaping up eight games into his tenure. We have a couple of feature interviews for you this week, both with a defensive slant, and featuring a current and an ex Whitecap. We sit down with goalkeeper Max Crepeau about his early days playing football as a kid in Quebec and the recent 'Caps matches. Then we catch up with an old friend, LAFC right back Steven Beitashour to chat about not being valued as a defender in MLS, his career high, his new podcasting venture with Jordan Harvey, and more. Plus we continue our 1979 NASL Soccer Bowl celebrations, look at the weeken'ds action in the MLS West, hear some gold from LAFC head coach Bob Bradley on the BC Place turf, and go a little French for this week's Football Violence Awareness Month Wavelength. John speaks about his time at Manchester United and how Sir Alex Ferguson informs some of the decision-making processes he employs today at LAFC. They get into the early formation of the Club, putting a team on the pitch for the inaugural season, and what John's past experience in MLS taught him. Then the guys change gears a bit to talk about a trip they all took to Dodgers' batting practice. Could John hack it? Glenn and Max then preview Wednesday’s Open Cup semifinal match. Chris Saetz joins the show to finish the hour. The Dynamo goalkeeper previews Wednesday’s semifinal which he’ll start, and what it means to him to be able to play for a trophy. Glenn also asks Saetz to go over what went wrong against KC.

Toronto FC once again put forth a dominant home display, this time taking out the San Jose Earthquakes 4-0 courtesy of a Jozy Altidore brace. However, it was what is becoming a classic home performance where there were no weak links and everyone chipping in from Victor Vasquez to Steven Beitashour, with Jonathan Osorio adding in insurance at the end. It was a near-perfect performance with a passing and possession highlighting the afternoon. Looking ahead, TFC are into the homestretch for the playoffs and have some key fixture to watch as they are in a position for a season of greatness.
We did another interview with Steven Beitashour. He discussed about his time so far with Toronto FC, MLS Cup Final and Team Melli! Panelist: Pasha Hajian & Pezhman Pars

The lion sleeps tonight. Well Lions actually. Vancouver Whitecaps have headed home after two successful away games that saw them claim six points, two clean sheets and create late drama galore. We look back over the weekend win over Orlando City, and hear some thoughts on the match from 'Caps coach Carl Robinson, goalkeeper David Ousted, and defenders Steven Beitashour, Jordan Harvey and Pa Modou Kah. But that's all in the past now, for the first Cascadia derby of the season is coming up this weekend and we preview the Portland game. Who will play? Who will be suspended? Will the Timbers have a midfield left? We look ahead to the big battle and hear some views on the game and the stories surrounding it from both coaches - Carl Robinson and Caleb Porter And we have to say, the end of the Porter audio does make for some uncomfortable and cringingly awful listening!
It's that time again. Snow is on the ground, you can justify being covered in glitter to your wife without her suspecting you've been at the strippers, and fat people feel that they're festively plump. And that can only mean one thing - it's the start of AFTN's end of season roundtables. Episode 88 reunites your usual co-hosts Michael McColl and Steve Pandher, AFTN writer Jay Duke (briefly), and Curva Collective's Zachary Meisenheimer and Steven Lamothe, to discuss the first two months of 2014 from primarily a Vancouver Whitecaps perspective. Surprising no-one, we kick off in January and look back on the Camilo saga, Robbo's management team, the SuperDraft, the additions of players like Steven Beitashour and the USL PRO partnership with Charleston Battery. Away from the 'Caps we also look at the CSA's strategic plan and the possible bid for the 2026 World Cup. Training camp opened and the Caps made a couple of preseason trips in February, first to Arizona and then on to Cascadian rivals Portland Timbers. Playerwise, Nigel Reo-Coker, Omar Salgado, Andre Lewis and Matias Laba got tongues wagging for various reasons. And there's still time to look at the breaking news of the week, the excellent re-signing of Mauro Rosales and hear from the man himself. Have a listen!
Intense was the word of the day at Whitecaps training on Tuesday and it was also the mood in the air as the players battled hard for over two and a half hours. There were hard challenges, verbal exchanges and an overall desire to get the team over the final stretch and into the playoffs. Episode 75 of "There's Still Time" is a special Tales From The Training Ground as we hear from Caps' head coach Carl Robinson, goalkeeper David Ousted, right back Steven Beitashour, midfielder Russell Teibert and striker Omar Salgado about a number of key topics. We look at the Caps' three clean sheets in a row; the team's current fifth place in the standings and playoff push; the intensity of training and why it's important it doesn't go too far; the upcoming LA game; the Julian Jenner rumours and whether there will be more additions before the roster freeze; and what are the chances of some more homegrown talent being added soon? All that, and there's still time to look at the Salgado handshake incident that had everyone in a tizzy over the weekend, and we hear from the player and coach themselves in full about it, expanding on my article on MLSsoccer.com. Have a listen!
The waiting is over and the 2014 World Cup is underway. It may not have been an opening game classic, but there were enough talking points from the Brazil-Croatia game to keep most people happy. But we have so much more to talk about than that in Episode 68 of "There's Still Time", the AFTN Soccer Podcast. We're bringing you a World Cup podcast with a very Vancouver Whitecaps feel and theme to it, as we talk to some Caps about their countries, the World Cup and their memories. First up, we bring you part of Steven Beitashour's conference call from Brazil as he tells us about life with the Iranian team, looks forward to their opening game with Nigeria and shares some of his earliest and fondest World Cup memories. Iran get underway on Monday and that game is followed by the big clash between Ghana and the US. We bring you some thoughts from both sides as Gershon Koffie gives his thoughts on the Black Stars and Erik Hurtado on the Stars and Stripes, and both players tell us what it would mean to them to play at a World Cup Finals one day. Then it's time for some Latin flair as Pedro Morales talks Chile, nearly making the 2010 World Cup squad and his favourite World Cup memories. If that's not enough, Jay Duke and myself take a trip down World Cup memory lane ourselves. And there's still time to play you some snippets from something that makes every World Cup complete, "quality" official and unofficial World Cup songs.
Days have passed and the full impact of Vancouver Whitecaps emphatic 4-1 win over New York has had time to sink in. In Episode 46 of "There's Still Time" we talk to Caps head coach Carl Robinson about his first win as a manager, the team's performance and tempering expectations. We also look at the new post game training initiative he's introduced and Carl tells us who won the fashion stakes between himself and Mike Petke.Steven Beitashour then joins us for his first appearance on the podcast. The Caps new right back talks about Saturday's win, the role the veterans have in the squad and just how good this team could be this season. And despite being attacked by a bee, Steven discusses why he's not getting carried away by the thought of appearing at the World Cup, despite everyone asking him about it! There's a new, yet familiar face at training this week, with Residency alumni Brody Huitema back from Duke University on spring break. Brody talks to us about his first season in the NCAA, the differences he's found in the college game, how the Residency helped him prepare for his college career and returning to train with the Caps. And there's still time to round up a busy first week of MLS action. Have a listen!
They're back! Vancouver Whitecaps are back in preseason training and raring to go under a new regime. Episode 37 of the AFTN podcast "There's Still Time" comes straight from the training pitch and is the first of hopefully three podcasts that we'll bring you this week from the opening days of camp. We look at what went down in day one, who impressed and who looked like they still haven't shaken off the Christmas turkey, along with a look at the new additions to the squad, including new signing Steven Beitashour. We have an exclusive chat with Caps' coach Carl Robinson about his first training session as a manager and not an assistant and what's he's hoping for and expecting from his squad for the whole of the preseason. And there's still time to talk to some of the Vancouver media about what and who they want to see from the first week of training, and we ask them to sum up the offseason so far in one word! Have a listen!
