For the final time in 2021, the boys are at World Famous Filimonster Studios to record an episode of “The Most LAFC Podcast on Earth”, Defenders of the Banc! There is SO much news to discuss since our pasting at the hands of the Commerce City Rapids, and Filly and Scarf try to get to ALL of it! This offseason saw, without a doubt, the most significant player movement of any of our first four seasons. El Profe, Eduard Atuesta, is gone, and not to a club that many could have predicted. Eduard gets to try to make it a Copa Libertadores three-peat for Brazil's Palmeiras. Also gone is the only coach we have ever known, Bob Bradley, as he heads north of the border to drink Labatt's and coach his son, Michael, at Toronto. He's been given the keys to the kingdom, eh, as he was named both head gaffer and Sporting Director at TFC. Also gone is an unsung hero who truly has been there from the beginning, Defender of the Banc Tristan Blackmon. Picked with our second ever SuperDraft pick in 2018, Tristan leaves behind a legacy of grit, toughness, and a fun social media follow. Who will play keeper? With Jamal Blackman being given his walking papers and Pablo Sisniega traded to the new Al Raitt FC, Charlotte, Tomas Romero is the only keeper under contract as of the recording of Episode 178. Also gone, as of now, are Raheem Edwards, Jordan Harvey, Daniel Crisostomo, Alvaro Quezada, and Michee Ngalina. LAFC has also begun to re-tool, or “tweak”, as JT put it, by bringing in two players with bona fide MLS Cup experience. The newest Defender of the Banc, Franco Escobar, comes to us by way of Atlanta United, where he scored the second goal in their 2-0 MLS Cup win over Portland in 2018. The Argentinian looks to help the Black and Gold on the wings. Fresh off winning MLS Cup with NYCFC in 2021, then being drafted by Charlotte in the Expansion Draft, Ismael Tajouri-Shradi lands with LAFC by way of a trade with MLS's newest club. In the mold of a Danny Musovski-type, or, dare we say, Adama Diomande, Israel knows how to put the ball in the back of the net and provides much-needed depth when Chicho, Rayito, or Vela are off the pitch.      And don't forget, Defenders… we also get a full season of Chicho Arango, a healthy Eddie Segura, and (at least) a full half-season of a healthy Carlos Vela. (We explain, don't worry.) All we need now is a head coach. And a starting center midfielder. And a starting keeper. And a little more depth. Also on this episode, we celebrate Chicho Arango taking home the Newcomer of the Year Award for 2021, the U19's as they advance in Open Cup Qualifying, and Lee Nguyen's NWSL trophy! We get a new toy in Filimonster Studios, we circle some key dates on the calendar that we are looking forward to, and Scarf doesn't have Covid (according to two tests) even though he feels and sounds like death. Which inaugural team player signed to coach with Sister Jean over at Loyola-Chicago? How is Diego Rossi doing in Turkey or Christian Ramirez in Scotland? And why does Filly now have a vested interest in our eMLS player? You'll have to listen to find out! Finally, stick around for the end, please. We know it's long, but Filly and Scarf both chat about their New Year's Resolutions, or as Filly says, goals for 2022. This may be it for 2021, but we can't wait to experience what's in store for 2022! Defenders Nation, thank you, and we love you! Here's to all the best in 2022 to the millions… and millions!

Finally… LAFC has come BACK… to the Champions League! Crashing through the door like Stone Cold entering the ring, the boys in Black and Gold looked to make a statement against another Liga MX opponent, and, as we said on the pod several times… “Oh! What a night!” LAFC looked to exercise several sets of demons as they took on Cruz Azul in Orlando. The 2020 MLS season. The Covid Cup experience in Orlando. Heck, even the moniker of not being able to win games that matter. Those demons got way more exercise than Scarf has these past 9 months. LAFC is now the torchbearer for MLS in the 2020 edition of CONCACAF Champions League. It didn’t look good for the boys just 14 minutes in, as an early PK put La Máquina up 1-0. But from there on out, Cruz Azul put on a pair of cement boots. LAFC held their opponents to just one shot on target for the entire match, Carlos Vela struck first for LAFC after drawing a PK. With the score level in the winner-take-all match, LAFC began to re-assert themselves in the second half. It would be Mahala Opoku in the 58’, not third DP Brian Rodriguez, who would be the first off the bench for LAFC, taking the place of Danny Musovski. It would take just a dozen minutes for Mahala to play the role of game-changer for LAFC, slotting a beautiful one-timer past Cruz Azul’s backup keeper and putting LAFC up for good, 2-1. The stars of the show, however, had to be the stellar backline. A combination of Chiqui, Segura, Murillo, Blackmon, and El-Munir shut down any semblance of an attack from the Liga MX side, and just like that, LAFC moves on to the semi-final as the lone MLS side remaining in the tournament. On this episode, you’ll hear everything you expect from the Defenders of the Banc. Our “Wait, What?!” moment comes rather early in the episode, as Cruz Azul seems to have omitted their best attacker! We miss Lee Nguyen a little on This Day In LAFC History while we help Marco Farfan change from forest green to black and gold. You’ll hear how right Filly got certain predictions while also getting a rant from… the Scarf?! Yup, Scarf sounds off on this one, with the little voice that remains towards the end of the episode. It’s a date with Club America in the semis on Saturday, but, until then, enjoy Episode 132 recapping one of the biggest wins in club history!

After Tuesday's 3-0 victory over Club Leon at the Banc, Los Angeles Football Club advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2020 CONCACAF Champions League. Read that again, because it still feels surreal to type. The CONCACAF comeback, fueled by late goals from Carlos Vela and Diego Rossi, was one of the most important results in club history. Not even a loss to Inter Miami in the Major League Soccer season opener would have dampened the vibe around the team coming off such a momentous match on the international stage. Unfortunately for Rodolfo Pizarro, Lee Nguyen, David Beckham and the rest of Inter Miami, Carlos Vela (happy belated birthday from the Season Pass family to the captain!) had enough magic in his left foot to guide LAFC to a second win in four days and one of the best weeks ever for the black and gold universe. Next for LAFC will be the second league match of the season against the Philadelphia Union. The club will host Cruz Azul to begin the CONCACAF Champions League quarterfinal just four days later, so Bob Bradley & co. have to begin thinking about how to navigate a busy beginning to the 2020 season. Ryan Wallerson of the Los Angeles Daily News and Writer at Large (he said small, but we all know Dweezy is anything but) Alex Dwyer are once again joined by Tigers Supporter Group member and youth soccer coach Pierce Maher to talk about the second leg against Leon, the season opener against Inter Miami and discuss the biggest concerns for the club moving forward towards Philly and Cruz Azul.

Filly and The Scarf are back at it again on Episode 72! A flurry of LAFC news dropped over the last few days, but the main topic of discussion on this episode? LAFC crashes the CONCACAF Champions League party! The draw for the 2020 CCL is set, and LAFC drew the toughest opponent possible, Liga MX foe Leon. The Black and Gold will travel to Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico for the first leg, then host "Los Verdiblancos" at the Banc. Both legs will take place in mid-to-late February. Will it be a time to shine for Pablo Sisniega? Will we still have Diego Rossi? Only time will tell. Filly does a wonderful job talking (and talking) about the history of the CCL while the pair run through a mini-breakdown of Leon. Poor Filly will have to miss both matches, as he will be in Italy for the first set of matches. Will LAFC prevail in his absence, or will the pod-favorite hashtag #blamefilly make its return? The trip down memory lane on This Day In LAFC History is a little longer than usual on this episode. This week in December is a big one in LAFC, as news pertaining to Walker, Eduard, Tyler, Latif, Rossi, and former mates Marco Urena and Laurent Ciman all played out over the course of the last few years. There's even an obscure birthday on the calendar! The Defenders family also takes time to wish a VERY big congratulations to @lafclarry, Larry Freedman, on taking home MLS Executive of the Year honors. As if we needed another reason to be huge fans of Larry? A new player, Danny Musovski, joins the Black and Gold, while we ponder the offseason fates of Dejan Jakovic, Steven Beitashour, and Jordan Harvey. The home opener is also a topic of discussion, as Inter Miami (Fort Lauderdale?) CF plays their maiden MLS voyage at the Banc on March 1. Welcome back home, Lee Nguyen! Finally, the boys reveal Defenders' 1-year anniversary party, which will take place at @FreePlayLA on Friday, December 20th! Please bring toys for the Krew's Toy Drive benefitting Think Watts, and enjoy a Julius Peppers with the Defenders of the Banc co-hosts!It'll be mid-February before you know it, but until then, take a listen to our 72nd try at getting this right. We have a very special guest in this longer-than-normal episode of Defenders. With us today in beautiful Filimonster Studios is the President of The 3252, Jimmy Lopez! We are thrilled to be able to sit down with Jimmy and talk all things LAFC. Filly, Scarf, and Jimmy explore all of the recent roster announcements leading up to the Expansion Draft on November 19th. We discuss the 12 members of the Protected List, as well as the great debate of protecting Pablo Sisniega over Tyler Miller. It’s definitely hard seeing names like Steven Beitashour, Jordan Harvey, Lee Nguyen, Mohamed El-Munir, and Tyler on the Unprotected List, but with our ability to only protect 12 players, some tough choices have to be made. Who does Filly, Scarf, and Jimmy think are the most likely candidates to be picked? All three have different answers, so you have to listen to find out! Jimmy also gives us a hint at the offseason work being done by The 3252, including some amazing charity work over the holidays. It's Episode 61 of Defenders of the Banc, and it's the episode we have been looking forward to all season! No, not the return of Christian Ramirez... (but that did happen!) LAFC entered the mid-week matchup against the human highlighters from Houston with a chance to lock up the coveted Supporters Shield, our club's first piece of hardware, and in front of 22,000 screaming fans, history was made! WE WON THE SUPPORTERS SHIELD!In what was the most significant step in an incredible 2-year journey, the Black and Gold are able to lift the shield in front of their home fans, and in convincing fashion. This wasn't backing our way in to the shield, or waiting for a result from another team. This was the LAFC we have grown accustomed to. Future MVP Carlos Vela slotted home a PK earned by Brian Rodriguez's wonderful effort to become the second player to ever net 30 goals in an MLS season, and keep his distance on the Golden Boot race at 2. Tyler Miller scored an own goal just 6 minutes later, and we enter the half tied at 1. Heroics from Lee Nguyen kept Houston off the scoreboard in the second half as Diego Rossi and Eduard Atuesta each put one in, and the celebration was on! 3-1 LAFC is your final, and the shield was ours. Stop us if we have said this already: WE WON THE SUPPORTERS SHIELD! Also on this episode is This Day in LAFC History, our "Wait, What?!" moment (it's shield-related!), and further info about Oktoberfest at The Fields on Saturday, September 28th. You'll hear Scarf's awful Jeff Goldblum impersonation and Filly sing a little Oasis! You'll find out how you can still contribute to Defenders' Kick Childhood Cancer Fundraiser! And you'll... OMG WE WON THE SUPPORTERS SHIELD!Enjoy the episode!

After a bit of a delay and a small Instagram campaign to wake Filly, Episode 57 is finally here! On this episode, while Filly is in Cartagena at a friend's wedding, Scarf is joined in the second chair by Center Mid Chicks' very own Nina! This game marked the first game in September, which also kicks off MLS's Kick Childhood Cancer fundraiser. By simply using the hashtag #KickChildhoodCancer, MLS will donate $1 towards cancer research for every post containing that tag. Please use it every time you post on social media this month!Minnesota makes their trip to the Banc, and, in doing so, puts an end to the Black and Gold's 20-game home unbeaten streak in regular season MLS matches. LAFC falls to the Loons, 2-0.Things were different from the start, as Bob Bradley made four lineup changes to the usual suspects in the 4-3-3. With Carlos Vela out due to a hamstring issue, Brian Rodriguez made his first start for LAFC. Fellow starters Mark-Anthony Kaye, Steven Beitashour, and Tyler Miller all began this one on the bench as Lee Nguyen, Tristan Blackmon, and Pablo Sisniega made the starting 11. Two wonder strikes from Mason Toye in the first half hour put LAFC at a decided disadvantage, and from then on, it was bus parking time for the Loons. As Nina points out in the episode, Minnesota played an incredibly disciplined game, opting for five, six, sometimes even 8 players back defending in lieu of creating offensive chances. LAFC couldn't crack the code, and MNUFC may have just shown the rest of MLS a blueprint to success against the offensive juggernaut. Also in this episode, This Day In LAFC History looks back on a win north of the border. In Name that Perez, does LAFC actually have FOUR Perez's? Scarf quotes Soundgarden lyrics before updating everyone on standings in the West, LAFC Chasing History, and the Supporters Shield. Nina gives props to USMNT great Tim Howard while reminiscing about LAFC's crest reveal at Union Station and an upcoming 4-year anniversary. While the game was tough to stomach, we hope you enjoy our latest episode of Defenders of the Banc! Don't forget to post using #KickChildhoodCancer!

LAFC comes back home to Banc of California Stadium to take on the defending MLS champs, Atlanta United, and with that comes Episode 48 of Defenders of the Banc. Fresh off the heels of a stinging defeat at Carson, the Black and Gold were looking to bounce back to their winning ways and stay ahead of the pack for our first piece of hardware, the Supporters' Shield. The fans were barely into their seats when Atlanta struck first, and it seemed as if the loss to their rivals last week would certainly affect the outcome of this one, too. But that was not to be! LAFC reeled off four goals in about 11 minutes of play to close the half and held on for the ride to ultimately win, 4-3, behind the play of super-sub Lee Nguyen and another goal by the future MVP Carlos Vela!On this episode of Defenders of the Banc, re-live Carlos Vela's first All Star Game captaincy on This Day in LAFC History. On this one-hour episode, it's a pair of rants by the boys as Scarf calls out MLS's head man Don Garber for his lack of concern for player safety while Filly aims at those calling for Bob Bradley's job. We show some love for The 3252's mini tifo while looking ahead to our matchup at Gillette with the Revolution in about a week. Finally, we address the rumors surrounding the third DP spot and Uruguayan sensation Brian Rodriguez.. It's a jam-packed episode full of Filly and The Scarf! Or are Filly and The Scarf full of it? You decide! Thanks for listening to Defenders of the Banc!

Defenders of the Banc - An LAFC Podcast

Round 1 of the 2019 edition of the Battle for Los Angeles took place in Carson last night, and with that comes the newest episode of Defenders of the Banc, featuring your boys, Christian "Filly" Filimon and "The Scarf" J.R. Lebert. It was deja vu all over again as Carson defeated the Black and Gold (and camouflage?) of LAFC, 3-2. It was a tale of two all stars. Two goals by captain Carlos Vela were not enough to secure victory, as Zlatan Ibrahimovic earned Man of the Match honors with his hat trick. It was a game full of physicality, emotion, and, ultimately, frustration for the fans of LAFC, as our inability to beat our hated rivals now stretches to four games. Tyler Miller made several tough saves to keep us in the game, Mohamed El-Munir and Lee Nguyen provided a much-needed boost to a sagging offense, and The 3252 again showed why both our team and our fans are the "Best in the West and the Best in the MLS." It proved to be too little, too late, however, as the clock ran out on LAFC in Carson with the away squad down a goal.LAFC has no time to lick their wounds. The reigning MLS champions, Atlanta United, make their first trip to the Banc in one week. Will there be changes to the starting lineup? Will Carlos Vela be named captain of the All Star game for the second straight year? Will we ever see Alejandro Guido on the pitch? All these burning questions and more could be answered on a future episode of Defenders of the Banc! Thanks for listening, and thanks for the support! We are all... Defenders of the Banc!

The floodgates have opened. MLS news is coming thick and fast as GMs, coaches and scouts work to build opening day rosters that will get them into the playoffs. The guys start with the LA Galaxy, who traded for Perry Kitchen and are quietly having a sneaky solid offseason. Plus, what's Ola Kamara worth on the MLS trade market? How about Lee Nguyen, who says he wants out of New England? Play your kids! That's a refrain you hear often on ETR. Andrew, Matt and Ben dig into all the South American prospects who've joined the league this winter -- no, not Barco, yet -- and wonder what it all means for Homegrowns and other young domestic players. Finally, more drama for the Canadian national team as Octavio Zambrano lasts just 10 months as the head coach of the men's national team. His replacement? Well, let's just say you'll want Daniel Squizzato's explanation for why John Herdman, previously the women's coach, is switching roles.

Six States One Podcast - A Show About The New England Revolution

There's no place like home. The Revs returned from the road to the comfortable confines of Fortress Foxborough and took on the weary Lions from Orlando City. Kei Kamara notched his first MLS hat trick with goals number 100, 101 and 102; Lee Nguyen was central to it all with four key assists; Cody Cropper racked his eighth clean sheet of 2017 and even new attacker Krisztan Nemeth got into the act with an assist to Teal Bunbury who found the back of the net for the the sixth time in eight matches. New England is now four points below the red line with eight games to go. We preview Montreal coming to town and fire up the Huot 8000 for a reality check on the Revs' playoff possibilities. After falling prey to the ravages of time yesterday, Filibuster has conquered its oppressors and is here for you. We talk about D.C. United 2-2 draw with the New England Revolution and how they were able to do it depleted from a slew of injuries that the team could not anticipate. We talk about the goals, especially Lee Nguyen's goal, as well has the team's troubling tendency to give up goals early in each half. We have to praise Ian Harkes and his play, before talking about the role of Jared Jeffrey and who we want to see start in defensive midfield against Atlanta United. Speaking of Atlanta United, we bring back Rob Usry in the second segment to talk about the interlopers United. We ask him about the status of the team, the injury to Josef Martinez, and the centrality of Miguel Almiron. We wonder whether or not we will see Andrew Carleton in MLS this year, and ask how annoyed Atlanta fans are that their soccer team won't be the ones opening the new Mercedes-Benz Stadium. We end by inquiring about their defense, the play of Julian Gressel and Carlos Carmona, and how to gameplan against them. Give it a listen!

We talk about their schedule so far, their hot and cold play, and the switch of positions of Lee Nguyen and Juan Agudelo. It is a USA gameday, and it is a Filibuster listen day! Jason, Adam, and Ben are back to talk about a couple of D.C. United games and the USMNT. We start with the two most recent games, the US Open Cup loss to the Fort Lauderdale Strikers on penalty kicks and the 0-0 draw to the Houston Dynamo in MLS regular season play. We talk about our feelings about these two results, as well as the lack of creativity shown across the field and what they can do better. We talk about D.C. United's formation, the debut of Jalen Robinson in MLS, and, of course, we have to talk about Chris Durkin. We then talk about tonight's USMNT matchup against Argentina, including the changes Jurgen Klinsmann is going to have to make to both his players and maybe to his formation. We take this opportunity to crack open the Twitterbox as well to talk about potential throwback jerseys for D.C. United. After the break we bring on Kyle McCarthy of the Boston Hearld to preview D.C. United's upcoming game against the New England Revolution. We talk about the Revs' up and down season so far, their midfield, and how Kei Kamara has fit in with their striker corps. We talk about the play of Andrew Farrell and Lee Nguyen, whether or not Juan Agudelo will still be with the Revs at season's end, and our old friend Charlie Davies before asking Kyle to gameplan the Revs for us. Give it a listen!

Using the newly formed FAT or TAF (Freely Acquired Things or Things Acquired Freely) mechanism they made up on the spot, the guys dole out gifts to all 20 MLS clubs. Who could really use Kenwyne Jones? Who is the next Matt Miazga? And, of course, which team will snag Jose Mourinho and Freddy Adu? First, though, the guys take a closer look at all the news making tongues wag ahead of Christmas, including the Jermaine Jones saga and some Lee Nguyen rumblings. Plus, what’s the latest free agency news? In the mailbag, a fan asks about whether the United States could be a future host of the Club World Cup, and Canada’s big 2015 and potentially bigger 2016 is compared to the USMNT’s disappointing campaign.

The first-ever MLS #DecisionDay has come and gone, but with four midweek Audi MLS Cup Playoffs matchups looming, there’s no time to rest ahead of the Knockout Round. Andrew and David are joined by Ben ‘The Research’ Baer to put the New York Red Bulls’ Supporters Shield in historical context. Then the guys chat with New England star Lee Nguyen about the Revs hot and cold season and MLS Cup redemption. Plus, there’s a playoff battle up north between Toronto and Montreal, Columbus demolished D.C. United and the Union have a new sporting director.   In the Western Conference, there was chaos, stress and plenty of excitement up until the final minute of the regular season. Now that the standings are set, the guys look ahead. Can Portland continue their late resurgence? Is Peter Vermes playing mind games with Benny Feilhaber at the wrong time? Does Vancouver have the right recipe for a title run? If Seattle are going to win their first MLS Cup, it will have to start against their old playoff nemesis, the LA Galaxy. Goalkeeper Stefan Frei goes over the the mood in the Sounders camp, details all the Decision Day drama, names an X-factor and much more.  Former ETR host Jason Saghini jumps in for the mailbag, returning with some sage advice. What should Andrew and David wager on the World Series? Who might jump into the playoff field next season? Finally, MLS Cup predictions.

Plus, MLS clubs do the business in the CONCACAF Champions League.   In the second segment, the guys take a closer look at what’s turning into a back-and-forth MLS Cup playoff race. Who can clinch this weekend? Whose hopes are slowly dwindling? Can Drogba and Co. knock off the first-place Revs? Can Sporting Kansas City pull out of their recent nosedive? Is the Wiebe curse for real?   The mailbag starts with some CONCACAF Cup roster chatter (no Guardado? USMNT fans can hope), then rumors from around the Copa Centenario water cooler. Will it happen? Soccer fans in the US wait with baited breath. Plus, thoughts on LAFC’s name confirmation and Darlington Nagbe’s United States citizenship and what it could mean for the US national team.

It's down to four in the MLS Cup Playoffs, presented by AT&T. Well, almost. Three are locked in and, as of taping on Monday, Seattle and Dallas were set to battle it out for the final stop. Because of that, the guys start the show with a fake recap of the match, and wouldn't you know it Simon goes against the grain. After that little excercise, the guys turn their focus to the LA Galaxy's beatdown of Real Salt Lake. Tony Beltran says Landon Donovan "battered" him in recording just the third hat-trick in playoff history. New England battered Columbus on the scoresheet, too, although one of the ETR crew says they pretty much played perfectly. Meanwhile, in DC, Red Bulls fans didn't exist because nobody saw them on TV. They're still alive, though. Stick around for USMNT and more Lee Nguyen talk as well as Dispersal Draft chatter in the second segment. In the mailbag, donuts are debated and the guys assure everyone out there that it's nothing but love in the studio. Email us at ExtraTime@MLSsoccer.com or tweet us at @ExtraTimeRadio. There's one Knockout Round game left, but the two-legged postseason fun starts this weekend with the conference semifinals. The guys start off with some Los Angeles FC news and some disagreement about the penalty call that sent Dallas through on Wednesday before turning to the Western Conference's bracket. Can LA get a result at Rio Tinto? Will Mauro Diaz start against Seattle? It's just as tough out East, with Columbus and New England a battle of purveyors of the beautiful game. Lee Nguyen joins the guys to run the rule over his own incredible season, talks Jermaine Jones' fashion sense and admits he's not sure what the future holds when it comes to international soccer. Plus, who would D.C. United rather face between Sporting KC and New York? And is the ETR curse in effect?
