The Colorado Avalanche lose to the Nashville Predators in a COVID-filled game. The beginning of the game started off weird as both Cale Makar and Darcy Kuemper were ruled out because they both tested positive for COVID. The game itself was full of bad play from the Avalanche. All that and much more as AJ, Rudo, and Blais talk about what led to the loss.

We're back! After a long delay due to COVID-19, nationwide protests for racial justice, and the attempted overthrow of one of our branches of government, we start off strong with Dave Clark, broadcast voice for the Tacoma Defiance and Sounder at Heart contributor, recapping the challenges faced by both the Defiance and the Sounders in 2020 during their respective seasons. Dave also writes about Dungeons & Dragons on his blog, Full Moon Storytelling, including a very interesting write-up on how to incorporate sports play into your D&D game. The MLS is Back Tournament (or the COVID Cup as we so lovingly dubbed it) was conducted in Orlando from July 8 – August 11 at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. While overall the tournament can be viewed as a successful employment of the “bubble” format we saw throughout professional sports including the NWSL (first successful league to “bubble” in Herriman, UT) and the NBA (also in Orlando at the WWofS). MLS would also return to play post MLS is Back tournament in a regional format that was intended to minimize travel for teams due to the soaring COVID-19 infection rates nationwide. We discuss the challenges of the return to play, the things we missed the most, and how young player development was affected due to the difference in safety protocols between MLS and the USL Championship. What are the teams' needs as we head into 2021? The Sounders did not activate options on a lot of players that have been key components for the team over the past few seasons leaving some obvious, and maybe not so obvious, holes in the roster. We also discuss the success of the Sounders as an org in the following of COVID-19 procedures in comparison to other leagues and other teams in Washington. Also, Schmetz is staying put in Seattle and it appears Gonzo Pineda is as well after being on the short list to take over for DC United. We discuss the merits of Brian Schmetzer and his importance to the Sounders organization and their success since he took over as head coach. We close it out with our best/worst case scenarios in regard to the upcoming 2021 season.Regular featured cast:@muffintopmodel Tim Hamilton@podfish Steve Ketelsen@jm_murf John Murphy@nate_bowling Nathan Bowling (emeritus & occasional)@cm_peterson Cat Peterson (hiatus)Please tell your friends and SUBSCRIBE! on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify, or touch the RSS feed link below to add us to your favorite podcast app. This production of the Flounders B-Team is released under the Creative Commons 3.0 International Share-Alike Attribution License. Finally… LAFC has come BACK… to the Champions League! Crashing through the door like Stone Cold entering the ring, the boys in Black and Gold looked to make a statement against another Liga MX opponent, and, as we said on the pod several times… “Oh! What a night!” LAFC looked to exercise several sets of demons as they took on Cruz Azul in Orlando. The 2020 MLS season. The Covid Cup experience in Orlando. Heck, even the moniker of not being able to win games that matter. Those demons got way more exercise than Scarf has these past 9 months. LAFC is now the torchbearer for MLS in the 2020 edition of CONCACAF Champions League. It didn’t look good for the boys just 14 minutes in, as an early PK put La Máquina up 1-0. But from there on out, Cruz Azul put on a pair of cement boots. LAFC held their opponents to just one shot on target for the entire match, Carlos Vela struck first for LAFC after drawing a PK. With the score level in the winner-take-all match, LAFC began to re-assert themselves in the second half. It would be Mahala Opoku in the 58’, not third DP Brian Rodriguez, who would be the first off the bench for LAFC, taking the place of Danny Musovski. It would take just a dozen minutes for Mahala to play the role of game-changer for LAFC, slotting a beautiful one-timer past Cruz Azul’s backup keeper and putting LAFC up for good, 2-1. The stars of the show, however, had to be the stellar backline. A combination of Chiqui, Segura, Murillo, Blackmon, and El-Munir shut down any semblance of an attack from the Liga MX side, and just like that, LAFC moves on to the semi-final as the lone MLS side remaining in the tournament. On this episode, you’ll hear everything you expect from the Defenders of the Banc. Our “Wait, What?!” moment comes rather early in the episode, as Cruz Azul seems to have omitted their best attacker! We miss Lee Nguyen a little on This Day In LAFC History while we help Marco Farfan change from forest green to black and gold. You’ll hear how right Filly got certain predictions while also getting a rant from… the Scarf?! Yup, Scarf sounds off on this one, with the little voice that remains towards the end of the episode. It’s a date with Club America in the semis on Saturday, but, until then, enjoy Episode 132 recapping one of the biggest wins in club history!

To kick off this week's podcast, we jumped in with a look at the offseason and what it will take for Ken Holland to have a successful summer fall. On the flip side, what would count as a disastrous offseason for the Oilers? We looked at both sides of the coin and took a few swings at what each scenario might look like. Sticking with goaltending, we looked at some of the rumours that are circling the Twitterverse these days and whether or not moving the first-round pick makes sense if it means finding the right fit at that position. What about drafting a goaltender like Askarov with the 14th overall pick? Changing to the forward group, we looked at the Andreas Athanasiou situation and what are the Oilers' options are when it comes to the recently acquired winger. Is there any scenario that makes sense for the Oilers to qualify him at $3 million, or is it more likely that the team and player part ways because of circumstance? Lastly, we wrapped up the podcast by offering our Stanley Cup predictions as the Dallas Stars and Tampa Bay Lightning are getting set to face off for the COVID Cup.  Hosted on Acast. Later, NBC NHL Insider Pierre McGuire joins the show live from the bubble in Edmonton. We talk college football, Syracuse basketball, our sad, sad Metropolitans, and so much more. But don't worry, we talk LAFC and other soccer (but no Patriots!). For Episode 110, we also bring on Connor Kalopsis and Jerry Reynoso, the lads over at 110 Football, a budding media conglomerate with a small crew and big dreams. Previously able to make it work with just a producer, director, director of photography, editing and sound crew, and maybe a show runner or two, they have now added a few mega-stars of LAFC lore, the incomparable Vince La Rosa and former LAFC captain Benny Feilhaber. This 17-year old duo Zooms with us about a wide range of topics: both of their first times meeting each other, what goes into a production of 110 Football, their thoughts on the Covid Cup, the Champions League, and their aspirations for the future. Please stick around until the end to hear about an amazing project Jerry is spearheading called L.A. The House of the Mouse became a house of horrors for LAFC, as the pre-tournament favorites were bounced by, of all teams, the cinderella story of the COVID Cup, Orlando City SC, led by, of all players, Joao Moutinho. LAFC loses on PK’s 5-4 after ending regulation locked at 1. This week should have been a celebration of epic proportions at Banc of California Stadium. The All Star Game was set to pit a team of Liga MX foes against a likely LAFC-laden MLS All Star squad at the Cathedral of the Black and Gold. Unfortunately, the hell that has been most of 2020 cancelled those plans, pushing them back at least a year. In light of these crazy times, at least we had the MLS Is Back tournament to look forward to. Well, the run is over, after a decidedly-tired looking but valiant effort from our boys. Another BWP goal was not enough, as a 90th minute equalizer from Joao sent the game to PK’s. Tied after one round, Jordan Harvey unfortunately bangs his shot off the crossbar, and the hopes of LAFC advancing were tenuous at best. Though LAFC was able to see out their subsequent rounds, so was Orlando, and, just like that, the dream of hoisting the COVID Cup was over. It’s out of the bubble and back to L.A. for the Black and Gold. The world has taken notice of Diego Rossi. Bradley Wright-Phillips has found the magic that he had for so many years in New Jersey. The tournament was finally the coming out party for Brian Rodriguez that we were waiting for, with 2 goals and 4 assists. And, in our humble opinion, we look to have our #1 keeper in Kenneth Vermeer. All that being said, it’s an unfortunate exit for the favorites. Licking our wounds is never easy, and this one certainly hurts, but we do our best to keep it nice and regular for you as well, with two “Wait, What?!” moments, This Day In LAFC History, and the usual banter back and forth. Why does Filly have some ‘splaining to do? When will Scarfstradamus get one right again? And will the Defenders ever be able to walk around Vietnam without being mobbed? (You’ll hear why, don’t worry.) Please make sure to stick around for the end of the episode for our heartfelt tribute to the godfather himself, Jerry Jimenez of Heart of LAFC. Thank you for listening as we head to Episode 110!

On today's show, Pat and the boys get an intimate look at what life is like in the respective bubbles in Orlando and Edmonton. First, 8th Overall pick in the 2012 NBA Draft, 2013 NBA Slam Dunk Champion, and current guard for the Orlando Magic, Terrance Ross joins the program. Pat and Terrance discuss what the day to day is like in Orlando, if the food situation is as bad as people originally thought, if guys are still doing extra curricular activities, how he feels about the Magic's chances, and what he does to pass the time in between practices and games (1:11-16:01). Next is another installment of McAfee & Hawk Sports Talk where Pat and AJ discuss Pat's wedding and what his expectations should be going in, whether or not he should be nervous, what to look for, and what to remember to make it as memorable as possible. Pat, AJ, and the boys also cover everything else while going off the rails a little bit on this Feel Good Friday (17:43-1:28:20). Lastly, NBC NHL Analyst and friend of the program, Pierre McGuire joins the show live from Edmonton. Pat and Pierre discuss the quarantine situation upon arrival in Canada, what the players have thought of the experience thus far with air conditioning going out at one of the hotels recently, how the NHL managed to pull this off, and who he thinks has the most realistic shot at taking home the Covid Cup (1:29:23-1:42:37). It’s Episode 108, and what a way to spend a Monday! The Black and Gold continue to soldier on in the COVID Cup. This time, the road runs right through the Emerald City, by way of Orlando, of course. LAFC takes down Seattle, 4-1, in what might be their best performance of the young season. First, it’s a This Day in LAFC History that includes a “Wait, What?!” moment for possibly the very first time, as we harken back to the days of yore and the hiring of the best manager in MLS, Bob Bradley. It’s hard to believe that it was 3 years ago that Bob took the wheel of this beautiful, Black and Gold ship. After some LAFC injury news (Andy Najar, already?), it’s time to talk the COVID Cup. Yes, there have been breakout stars of this tournament (Akinola and Hasal). Yes, there have been surprise teams, both good (FC Cincinnati, Orlando City) and bad (Atlanta, Carson). But no team came in with higher expectations than LAFC, and they have yet to disappoint. LAFC dominated the first 15 minutes of the match, breaking through on a PK from Rossi in the 13th. Right before the half, Latif Blessing doubles the lead, 2-0, and the rout was on. Of course, LAFC couldn’t make things easy, conceding in the 75th. There would be no collapse on this night, however! Rossi would add a second in the 83rd minute, and the goal that many were hoping for came in the 89th, as Brian Rodriguez ended Seattle’s stay in Orlando to complete the win, 4-1. A great way to spend a Monday! How did Filly become “Filly-strodamus”? Why was Scarf completely mesmerized by the advertising ribbon around the pitch? Most importantly, what suggestion from the Defenders could make the LAFC Foundation HUGE amounts of money? You’ll have to listen to Episode 108 to find out. Enjoy!

Episode 105 – Diego Dazzles on Derby Day Oh, Diego Rossi! The man who scored the first goal against the Sounders etched his name once again into the MLS history books, and he picked Derby Day in the Covid Cup to do it! Episode 105 of Defenders of the Banc is upon us, and, for the first time in months, the boys are together in world famous Filimonster Studios, recording together! The episode kicks off with a soliloquy of epic proportions by Filly, fresh out of the hospital where he clearly had a ton of time on his hands. After a short history lesson from Scarf, it’s time to get right in to the Covid Cup, Group F, and LAFC’s first two games of the tournament. We quickly break down the 3-3 draw against the Houston Human Highlighters, including the lows of the first half, the highs of the second half, and the dynamic debut of Bradley Wright-Phillips. And, oh-by-the-way, BRIAN RODRIGUEZ FINALLY SCORED! Could the prophecy of Scarfstradamus come true? (Hint… not quite yet.) After one match day in Group F, LAFC sat tied for second behind Portland, who took down Carson, 2-1. However, the meat in the tasty sandwich that is Episode 105 is our breakdown of the Carson’s Derby Day Disaster. A disturbing trend for LAFC has been their tendency to fall behind early, and the same came true tonight. Just 5 minutes into the match, Latif bangs one home… for Carson. More defensive dishevelment on the back line, and LAFC is down 1-0. A pair of PK’s would follow, with both Diego Rossi and Christian Pavon slotting their chances through for a 2-1 Carson lead. A second Rossi tally just before the half would even things at 2. It certainly was the tale of two halves, as Diego Rossi netted another brace to put his total to FOUR goals in the match, the first LAFC player to net 4 in a match! BWP strikes again and the offensive defender, Mohamed El-Munir deposits another in his Black and Gold account. Just like that, what was a close, tight 2-2 match at the half is blown open, and LAFC takes this round of the Battle of Los Angeles, 6-2. In the process, Rossi became the first player in MLS history to be involved in 5 goals in a match... twice! As Filly so astutely asserted on this episode, “Diego Rossi is good.” Our boys look almost assured of reaching the knockout stage of Covid Cup, needing a result against Portland, who is already in to the next round, to advance. Will Diego Rossi score again in game three of Group F? Will Rayito continue to build on a positive showing and add to his goal total? Will BWP make it three in three games? We’ll have all those answers, and a new episode of Defenders of the Banc, in just 5 days! Until then, let’s enjoy the fact that we have Diego Rossi… and no one else does!

It’s been several months, but it looks like the MLS Is Back tournament is FINALLY set to kick off in less than 24 hours. Unless you play for FC Dallas. Or maybe Nashville SC. Or one-fifth of the Vancouver Whitecaps. Or 2019 MLS Defender of the Year Ike Opara. Or, as we learned this week, reigning MLS MVP Carlos Vela of LAFC. But other than those players (and a handful of others…), MLS Is Back! Before the breakdown of the beginning of the tournament, it’s time to introduce the Defenders world to our brand-new member! Scarf likes to refer to him as Director of Arts and Crafts, but, really, the talent that Dexter Quinn brings to the table as our right-hand man on all things artistic is incredible. We are so happy to have Dexter on our team, and, as you can see from some of our most recent posts on social media, the guy is good! We also take a minute to try our best at appreciating the great talents of Vince La Rosa. We wish all the best to Vince on whatever he does next, can’t wait to see him absolutely crush it in his next endeavor, and look forward to our next glass raised together. #HireVince As we continue to celebrate Pablo Sisniega’s birthday, we delve into This Day In LAFC History, where we get BOTH a Rant With Filly and a prediction from Scarfstrodamus! What a segment! Here’s to many, many goals from Brian Rodriguez. LAFC also officially welcomes Andy Najar, courtesy of a brand new, 48-hour transfer window that ended July 7th! We explore roster options for LAFC during the COVID Cup, fresh off the revelation by Bob Bradley that Dio, BWP, and Andy Najar are all not ready to go a full 90. Will that mean more of LMU’s finest, Adrien Perez? Or will Latif Blessing reprise his role as striker? Does that mean more Cifu or Pancho? More importantly, is there any team in MLS deeper and more talented than the Black and Gold? We break down all three matches in LAFC’s Group Stage, including some predictions for our showdown with Carson on July 18. Does Houston pose more of a threat than we think, with a healthy Alberth Elis and others? What does two times the Chara mean for Portland? Will Chicharito record a shot-on-goal? In a rare feat, Filly and The Scarf find a way to work in “Three Umlauts” Niko Hämäläinen, our first-ever signing, Carlos Alvarez, and Inaugural Team member Nico Czornomaz all in the same episode! How excited is Filly for the COVID Cup? Why is Scarf fanboying over Johnny Hekker again? And who do the Defenders think will win each of the groups in the tournament? Tune in to Episode 104 to find out! Stay safe and healthy everyone!

Episode 102 takes a bit of a break from the healthy interview circuit we’ve traveled over the last few episodes to focus on all the LAFC news and notes in the world over the last few weeks, and there is a lot to cover!Yes, the COVID Cup, also known as the MLS Is Back Tournament, is the main topic of discussion. Houston, Portland, and, of course, Carson join LAFC in Group F, and we wouldn’t have it any other way. While there’s still a lot of info to be determined, like “Will Carlos Vela play?”, we break down as much info as we have leading into the group stage. Don’t worry, as we get more info about when we play our group stage matches and who will fill out our roster, we’ll be back with another episode to cover it!The Black and Gold also welcome a new member into the fold, Andy Najar. The 2010 MLS Rookie of the Year adds depth, youth, and experience to an already excellent back line. He’ll be eligible for the COVID Cup, too! It’s not just MLS that’s back; eMLS is coming back, too! RemiMartinn, eMLS’s 5th ranked FIFA player, is set to take on the winner of the win-and-you’re-in “Last Chance Qualifier” in the first round of the final tournament of the eMLS season. Couple this with the Sports Illustrated article on Remi, and it’s shaping up to be quite the month for Martin and LAFC Gaming! Also on this episode, LAFC may add an Emmy to its trophy case, Dio continues to flex his gaming skills, the NWSL might actually be coming near L.A., not quite TO L.A., and free COVID testing wraps up at the Banc June 30th. Finally, PLEASE join LAFC and sign the petition to make Juneteenth a national holiday! Let’s continue to try to be the change we want to see in the world, one step at a time. The boys talked about: - The Match with Tiger, Phil, Tom and Peyton & the Bundesliga - Gio’s heatstroke didn’t stop him from getting into a heated discussion about the NHL proposed playoff format. - Cack gives a very well articulated sermon on the risks involved with the return of the NHL. - Mikey Kassian sits back and strokes his beard as the other boys get into the thick of it: Should the NHL return to play and if so, how? - The potential matchups. What series catch our eye? Can Carey Price and the Montreal Canadiens upset Sidney Crosby and the Pittsburgh Penguins. Will Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl upset the modern era dynasty in the Chicago Blackhawks with Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews? Will the Maple Leafs avoid the Boston Bruins if they get through the Columbus Blue Jackets? - We finally get back to our list of favourite players in each NHL franchise. We ran down from the Ottawa Senators to the Winnipeg Jets. Listen to us on iTunes, Spotify, Google Podcasts, and other platforms!
