While many understand the failures of the late Jimmy Carter's presidency, he is often referred to as our “best ex-president” because of his humanitarian and diplomatic efforts following his loss to President Reagan. However, the rose-colored glasses through which many Americans view his post-presidency ignore his disastrous meddling in foreign affairs and blatant antisemitism since leaving office. Despite his humanitarian efforts, Jimmy Carter was not the elder statesman his allies alleged him to be. Rather, Carter's true legacy is that of someone who wished to remain president without the constitutional fetters of the office, undermining his successors of both parties. Steven Hayward is the Edward L. Gaylord Visiting Professor of Public Policy at Pepperdine University and a senior fellow at the Pacific Research Institute. He was previously a resident scholar at UC Berkeley's Institute of Governmental Studies and the F.K. Weyerhaeuser Fellow in Law and Economics at the American Enterprise Institute. Dr. Hayward is the author of The Real Jimmy Carter: How Our Worst Ex-President Undermines American Foreign Policy, Coddles Dictators and Created the Party of Clinton and Kerry (Regnery 2004). A founding member of the Critical Karaoke Radio Project, he is also Editor-At-Large of Springs Magazine and is the Director of the Colorado College Journalism Institute. The creator of the Colorado Springs Gazette's Colorado Cold Case Podcast, he was the writer, host, and executive producer of the show's first two seasons. Stan Evans helped build the conservative movement by founding the American Conservative Union, the Conservative Political Action Conference, and establishing the National Journalism Center. He was, in addition, a tremendous journalist and thinker. His book, "The Theme Is Freedom," should be a conservative classic, Steven Hayward observes in his new book, "M. Stanton Evans: Conservative Wit, Apostle of Freedom."What also made Stan Evans so very unique was his tremendous humor which he used to undermine Progressive moralizing. Hayward notes that a standard liberal critique of America was to say that any country that can land a man on the moon, can enact x progressive policy. Evans's response was "any country that can land a man on the moon can abolish the income tax." Evans once said to the consternation of liberals at Princeton that "I didn't support Nixon until after Watergate. Look, after wage and price controls, Watergate was a breath of fresh air." In recent years, like termites boring into a building’s foundation (to borrow a Suzuki-type metaphor), anti-humanism has degraded environmentalist thinking and advocacy. Indeed, environmental activists today routinely denigrate humans as parasites, viruses, cancers, bacteria, and murderers of the Earth. Suzuki, now a world-famous celebrity and anti-global warming activist, certainly hasn’t changed his old anti-human views. When asked by a Canadian Broadcasting Corporation interviewer in 2009 about how his “not very optimistic” perception of humanity has changed since he called people maggots, Suzuki merely deflected the question, noting that racism had lessened but also lamented that “Humanity is humanity… I just wish they’d stop being so human!” The popular culture has certainly embraced Suzuki’s anti-humanist theme.
