I wanted to be rich so bad for my entire life. In high school, I watched Wall Street with Michael Douglas and Charlie Sheen. It was supposed to be a cautionary tale but I saw it as inspiration. I wanted to be Gordon Gecko, the crazy high risk Wall Street trader. When I was 17, I got a job at a call center during the summer. I was on the phone every day, working double shifts. I was selling mobile phone subscriptions to people, mostly elderly. It was a shameful job but I was making money. So I felt good. This is how badly I wanted to get rich. But I was a teenage idiot. Now, 20 years later, I finally understand that being rich and having a lot of money is not the same as being wealthy. You can also be rich and not wealthy. At some point, we all realize that life is just a collection of our memories. Pre-order The Stoic Path to Wealth My new book is coming out July 16th. Summary In this episode, Andy talks with Scott Walker who spent 16 years as a Scotland Yard detective. Scott and Andy delve into lessons on emotional intelligence and negotiation skills gleaned from Scott's new book Order out of Chaos: Win Every Negotiation, Thrive in Adversity, and Become a World-Class Communicator. Key takeaways include seeking to understand before being understood, managing emotional states, and using empathy to build trust. Walker also discusses the importance of buying time and, interestingly, feeding egos in negotiations. It's an engaging discussion with one of the world's most experienced kidnap-for-ransom negotiators. Sound Bites "Negotiation is simply a conversation with a purpose." "Kidnappers are businessmen looking to get the right deal for them." "Feeding their ego doesn't mean flattering them. It's about acknowledging their needs and concerns, making them feel heard." "Success leaves clues." "We need to get out of our own way, suspend our own ego, seek to understand before being understood." "If you can visualize a negative outcome closely enough, you train your body and mind to get through it, reducing the power that fear can have over you." "More Sherlock Holmes than Gordon Gecko." To all the members of the Scouting movement who have shared with us this weekend, I trust that you have enjoyed the experience and leave the JOTA/JOTI weekend having learned some new things. I trust your time has been well spent and that we can join up again in 2024. In the meantime, if you would like to learn more about what we do please call your operator, or your local radio club or contact wia.org.au. via the website. We would love to keep our friendship going. We have been reminded by the media and politicians of how much the cost of living has increased in recent times. Basic items like a packet of potato chips have jumped almost a dollar in shelf price at one discount grocery chain. That is just one example of a close to 30% jump in prices which I have observed. The weekly shopping basket is getting more and more filled with store brands and weekly special buys and lots of people will be looking as much to the news from the Reserve Bank, on Tuesday, as they will be barracking for a winner of the Melbourne Cup. There are the favoured sites that people go to seeking a good buy and radio amateurs maintain a reputation for being very prudent with their money. Now, I wonder how many radio amateurs have been paying attention to the selling prices of second-hand gear. The online sites that I look over tell a sorry tale to me. The prices that people are asking for consumer electronics, and brown goods, let alone recreational gear such as CB and ham radios seem to go up as they age. Of course, we all know that items over 25 years old are vintage and must of course be valuable and collectable just on the basis of their age. I have little doubt that some of the advertisers of these items also worry about the number of people joining the hobby. I have little doubt that many are amongst those who raised their hackles at the high cost of entry by way of exam fees and the price of new equipment. I also wonder how these sellers can reconcile the two attitudes and offer a more economic entry path to aspiring operators. There are clubs that support new amateurs with loans of equipment while a new person gets the feel of amateur radio. The Wireless Institute gives free membership for newly qualified hams if they apply but sadly the person using initiative and researching their own purchases, in the second-hand market, too often are shocked by the Gordon Gecko maxim of “greed is good.” Over many years I have heard stories of various money-making ruses used by so-called “reputable” amateurs. Buying books at a discount and charging full retail on delivery; picking up bargains at a Hamfest and adding a couple of hundred percent markup when they list the items online. I feel these practices are counterproductive to growing this great activity. It would be wonderful to see sellers adopt a reasonable price regime for older gear and demonstrate a welcome to new members. Why Did Peter Sink?

There are seven stages of empire. America has leveled-up, careening around stage four, past stage five, and we don't really fully realize it yet but we are already leaning over the cliff of stage six. While everyone gets worried or excited about the coming decline and collapse, let me be the one yelling, “All is well!” A century ago, the Austro-Hungarians were the winners, and now their capitals are lovely little tourist stops on a river cruise. We are going the route of the City of Man, which is to collapse, just like what happened at Babel. In fact, in our arrogance in denying God, we have worshipped and enabled the demonic powers to guide us, and thus the nation must be reset and humbled. This is basic Spiritual Physics. The seven stages of empire are: * The Age of Pioneers* The Age of Conquests* The Age of Commerce* The Age of Affluence* The Age of Intellect* The Age of Decadence* The Age of Decline & CollapseWe will go this path because the decline must play out. It must. The last season must come. This cycle is not anything new or surprising, or it shouldn't be, as Plato wrote about this process long before Edward Gibbon wrote The Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire. Collapse of empire's gone wild is as old as human writing. We are in the last days of Babel, and it's worth noting how we got here, and why it's happening. But this fall of empire is not something to worry about because it is inevitable. The loss of your soul, however, is not. For that you have a choice to make. Free will is the great gift, from a God who will not coerce his followers. And joy is the gigantic secret that Christ shares with his followers. The real question for our time is: how will you endure the coming change? How will you persevere? How will you stay sane? How can you stand strong when the world starts to burn around you? How?The answer is: “By your endurance you will gain your soul.” Never take your eyes off of the truth. Never look away from Jesus when the wind comes up on the water. Never forget your own sin. Never forget your need for redemption. Never forget why the Cross had to be the way. Never look away from his love for you. By his life, by his death, by his resurrection, by his ascension - tunnel your gaze to that truth. Forget “my truth,” surrender to the the way, the truth, and the life, who all happen to be the same person. That is how you endure. When Jesus said that a follower of Him must follow him and even hate his own father and mother, his own family, he meant it. Because if anything can sway you to look away, to make you turn back to something of this world, then you have not endured, and you will not gain your soul. There is only one way to be free, to have certainty, and that is to never look away from the truth of Him. Today's president is tomorrow's dust. Today's billionaire is poor if he lacks faith. Today's popular opinion is tomorrow's joke. There is only one who rules the real kingdom, who wields real power, and who deserves all glory. The Tower of Babel is a warning about a bad way of thinking for a nation or a people. The rejection of God at a social level, where sin is selected as policy, is the problem in Babylon. Empire alone is not the problem. The word “empire” is not bad, just as the word and action of “sex” isn't bad. God made all things and saw that it was good. However, it all depends on what the thing is used for and how it is used. The story of Babel tells of everyone speaking the same language, but language in this case does not necessarily mean grammar and vocabulary (as I've beaten to a pulp in this series). You can read it literally, but it's boring. There is another way to think of language, and language here means worldview. And the worldview that is a problem is the one where money, honor, power, and pleasure become virtues, replacing actual virtues. The language of Babylon is that of most of our modern thinkers, Thomas Jefferson, Karl Marx, David Hume, Jean-Paul Sartre, Michel Foucault, right up to Ibram X. Kendi. The language is the denial of sin and the rejection of God in favor of man's Tower. There is a fundamental difference that everyone misses between Catholic theology and all other “solutions” like liberalism, Marxism, Protestant theology, liberation theology, Prosperity Gospel, modernism, and all the other -isms. The problem isn't people or government. The problem is spiritual and we are in a spiritual war. We have been in the spiritual way since the first two humans. Genesis does not disagree with science as much as people like to think. Even on an evolutionary path, somewhere along the two people's genes and souls were altered into something radically different from all other creatures. Just as the Big Bang matches with “Let there be light,” and as archaeologists keep confirming Biblical geography locations, and as the last ice age coincides with the ubiquitous worldwide stories of the Great Flood around 9000 B.C., we know through reason that something changed with humans that separated their way of life and worldview from neanderthals. The desires of humans have no bottom. They cannot be filled. There is a darkness in humans that does not exist in apes or any other creature. Thoughts and ideas come to human brains that make no sense and serve no purpose, aside from evil. That is what the spiritual war is about; keeping evil at bay, casting it back into the pit. If we fail to fight the spiritual war, we lose track of the problem. When we take our eyes off of Jesus, the devil embodies whatever we are looking at. If we see government as the solution, then the devil moves there. If we see sexual identity as the solution, the devil goes there. Even if we become too fixated on the Church as the solution instead of as a means to holiness, then the devil will occupy that space. The enemy is cunning and shifts shape, always waiting for you to forget about him. The number one enemy in the spiritual war is pride. This is why it's so telling that “Pride” is a celebrated virtue today, when in every possible case of hubris, pride leads to destruction. Always. Invariably. Every fairy tale, Bible story, fable, and even in stories like the Titanic or the Theranos fraud, pride always leads to destruction. There is no other outcome for the balloon of pride than to be deflated. It is a fact that even pure rationalists understand: what goes up, must come down. The interesting thing is this: if we wonder why God allows this evil, you have to realize this key secondary effect: to be reborn in the spirit, you have to go all the way down. God allows us pride in order to find our way to the truth and be reborn. Pride is the language we costume our ideas in, using intellectual arguments about how to organize an economy or how your identity is oppressed. Getting what you want, when you want it, and how you want it is what is considered “good” today. The unofficial virtues of America are those advocated by Gordon Gecko and the Marquis de Sade. The Marquis says, “Let us give ourselves indiscriminately to everything our passions suggest, and we will always be happy. Conscience is not the voice of Nature but only the voice of prejudice.”As for helping yourself to all thing, “Greed is good,” says Gecko. This language is all over our culture. “If winning isn't everything, then why do we keep score?” says the sports god, Vince Lombardi. “Winning isn't everything; it's the only thing,” says UCLA coach “Red” Sanders. So say we all! Competition and money and self-justification are the vocabulary and grammar, the pillars of the American language. That is how we speak, it's what we respect, what we aspire toward, what we aim our children at, how we measure success, how we measure someone's worth. For us, competition is the way, the truth, and the life. And it is the utter opposite of the message of Jesus Christ. “You justify yourselves in the sight of others, but God knows your hearts; for what is of human esteem is an abomination in the sight of God.” (Lk 16:15)In other words, the Lombardi trophy is an abomination, as is Gordon Gecko's wealth. Mark Zuckerberg's billions of dollars and users will be used against him in the court of God. Trump will have to answer for his gold toilet seat and various wives. Michael Jordan's championship rings will be gravel to be tossed aside. Elon Musk and Jeff Bezos may be first in line today, but the first will be last in the world to come. Those who cling to identity lies will be easy cases in the Last Judgment, because their language of self-assertion is the rejection of their real identities as sinners. Whatever we have think we have won or gotten power over in this world is perfectly useless and powerless in the next. If you are playing this game of fame and fortune and pleasure and striving to outdo your neighbor by elevating your desires, you are shoveling dirt out of your own grave. You cannot serve God and mammon. Mammon is a strange term. Mammon is the ego and all it's baubles: money, sex, drugs, power, diplomas. We are all about the mammon. It is fitting that Ben Franklin is on the $100 bill and he is now the symbol of the Benja-mammon. He is the idol of those seeking the “Benjamins,” the graven image that everyone is serving. When we are serving ourselves, we are serving our sins. This alone tells the tale. If any political issue concerns you more than the person of Christ, you have completely missed the message of Christ. He is the message. If you want to see some of kind of sin erased through political action, you don't understand what sin is or that you are a sinner. The language of Babel is the language of competition and the elevation of the self over God. Conservative Christians want to thump the commandments and liberal Christians forget that sin exists. And what are they all arguing about? “Stand for the flag and kneel for the Cross” vs. “Love is love.” Could someone help me find those in the Bible? God is over all things, and God is love. These equally empty platitudes of the political world have no meaningful grasp of Christianity, as they ignore Christ and ignore the spiritual battle entirely. What I have learned is that you can wear a cross and have no idea who Christ is. I've learned that you can call others scriptural cherry-pickers while holding a basket of picked cherries. Because in my reading, Christ does not endorse America, nor does he endorse greed, nor does he endorse racism, nor does he endorse same-sex marriage, nor does he endorse carving up your body, nor does he endorse Pontius Pilate's language that states: “What is truth?” He endorses chastity, marriage, humility, compassion, obedience, patience, and charity. He utterly rejects sin and all self-serving motives. As the Incarnation of the Living God, He is the Truth. If you cannot see this, then you may not know him as well as you think. Ask for help to get there. Go to God's information booth, otherwise known as prayer, because unless you come to know Jesus, you will not know the truth, and without him you cannot fight the spiritual combat. You can get win all you want, get all the laws passed through Congress that you think will save the world, but if you are not rooted in Christ, you will lose your soul. And once you do come to know him, the experiences and toys you desire here in this world will seem like trifles. They become like trinkets from gum-ball machines once you compare them to the value of faith granted from God. Worthless trifles will be set aside, just as Peter set aside the largest catch of fish he ever had and “dropped the nets” to follow him. Whatever exotic sexual fix you are seeking, or your desire to own the latest Tesla, those ideas will seem like distant memories of a childish phase of life. What once made you proud will suddenly be embarrassing. You will laugh at how you idealized the wants of the caterpillar after you are flying as a butterfly. You thought the creeping, crawling phase was the end, and whatever you got while still a struggling inchworm was all there was. Then you learn that you were far too easily pleased, as C.S. Lewis pointed out:If we consider the unblushing promises of reward and the staggering nature of the rewards promised in the Gospels, it would seem that Our Lord finds our desires not too strong, but too weak. We are half-hearted creatures, fooling about with drink and sex and ambition when infinite joy is offered us, like an ignorant child who wants to go on making mud pies in a slum because he cannot imagine what is meant by the offer of a holiday at the sea. We are far too easily pleased. (“The Weight of Glory” p.26)So before you start defending that sin you love the most, like getting high or having one-night-stands, read the Gospels again. You want the wrong things. Remind yourself what Jesus endorsed: humility before God, serving the poor, healing the sick, partaking in the sacraments, and obeying God's law - including, and especially, one marriage in this life being between man and a woman. To take up our cross and follow him means to endure the struggles and burdens and problems of our lives, not to affirm our problems as our identities. Our crosses are made to be carried, not re-interpreted as virtues and carried as trophies. Your cross can become a gift, but only if it is carried with Him. This ancient language of Babel is what we still speak today. It is the language of twists and turns, like Odysseus, who lies and cheats and pillages his way through the Greek epic to get what he wants in all cases. It is the language of “me first,” of taking what I please, of justifying my desires, of shaping God to fit my sins. When speaking that language, I am the potter on the wheel, not God, and I will shape the world to fit my desires. The reason that Pentecost marked a new day in the world is because from Babel onward, God confused the language and scattered the cultures of the world. Literally or metaphorically, this is important. The various cultures could not coalesce into a sin-rejecting juggernaut, but they were still competing and scrapping for pieces of this world. The language was still competition, but the death match was happening in the ponds, not the ocean. So when Peter stepped out on Pentecost and spoke, everyone understood him. The apostles all started speaking and the people of “all languages” understood. Why? How did they understand? Again, literally or metaphorically, it works either way. Their message was getting through. The message was heard. And what was the message? “Jesus the Nazorean was a man commended to you by God with mighty deeds, wonders, and signs, which God worked through him in your midst, as you yourselves know. This man, delivered up by the set plan and foreknowledge of God, you killed, using lawless men to crucify him…God raised this Jesus; of this we are all witnesses…Exalted at the right hand of God, he received the promise of the holy Spirit from the Father and poured it forth, as you (both) see and hear. God has made him both Lord and Messiah, this Jesus whom you crucified.” (Acts 2:14-41)Was it the words? Or was it the change in Peter and the Apostles that was seen? Was it the message seen, as they lived it out in their lives? Or was it heard by language, as God briefly “unscattered” the tongues of people. Somehow I think it was something bigger than Google Translate. I don't think it was only hearing the words. The language of Babel was that of competition and ego. The language of Peter was the opposite. His message was the un-Babel. He gave the world a non-compete clause, that you could follow through Christ. There was a way out of the fighting pit, the one-up-manship could finally end. There was a way to live that didn't require all the fake nonsense and puffery that we are used to living among. The reason Peter's message was fluent to all observers, is because the non-compete clause was given to us all. To stop fighting is what we all want. To stop competing with one another. We want peace. We want rest. We want healing. We're tired of being offended and wanting revenge. When Jesus appeared to the apostles, his first words were, “Peace be with you.” He gave it right then and there. Peace. All goodness and rest comes from a life in Christ, not through our own efforts to win or achieve. Peace does not come through our instinct, or through our competitive culture, and not via coercive policies. There is only one way to heaven and Jesus showed the way. He plowed the way to daylight through this blizzard called life. Still, for the science minded, how could they really understand what Peter was saying? How to get past this miracle? It's too miraculous to conceive as possible. I would just say, “Ask for belief,” but do you even need to ask in this case? We can understand it without a miracle. Did they even need to hear the words? When someone is free, can you not tell? When a child starts playing or singing or dancing, does it matter if you are the same nationality or speak the same language as the child? No. Any English speaking person can interact with a Chinese, Spanish, or Kenyan child and see the innocence and joy in the child. The listeners who heard and saw Peter could see it on his face, could tell by how he was preaching. How? Because he was open. He was no longer hiding. The fig leaves were dropped. The fear was gone. The pretenses were gone. The fake promises of a salesmen were nowhere to be found. He had returned to the faith of a child. This is why Babel is the opposite of Pentecost. God withdrew from selfish people at Babel, but he enkindled the fire of his love at Pentecost. Babel turned the world gray and the color came back at Pentecost. It's like the horrible movie Pleasantville, except in Acts of the Apostle, it's not the embrace of sin that adds color the world, it's the conquering of sin. The only way to heaven is through the cross. You can't avoid it, you must carry it and voluntarily let your ego die upon it. Then you will be like a child, like Peter, closer to Jesus. If you follow him, all the way, you will be a brother of Christ and son of God. When you observe the angry banter online today, if you can stand it, take notice that the person of Jesus is rarely mentioned unless it's to score political points. We have turned Jesus into a basketball, or a weapon. We've taken Jesus' non-compete clause and used him as a club to compete. It's the opposite of what he told us to do. Surrender to him. Surrender the need to win. Do you need to comment? Do you need to reply? When they come for you, and accuse you, and slander you, do you need to win? Jesus, using his non-compete, shows us that you do not need to reply. You do not need to get angry. Though harshly treated, he submitted and did not open his mouth; Like a lamb led to slaughter or a sheep silent before shearers, he did not open his mouth. (Is 53:7) This is the forever the permanent danger of shifting our focus from Christ as the fully divine and fully human second person of the holy Trinity. The minute you look away, you sink. You return to the pit, gladly leaping in and entering the fray. We just can't resist the language of Babel, and take up jockeying for position because we fear for our ego, our reputation, our loss of self. We think somehow this time it will be different, but when the fear strikes us, we begin…to sink. Must we do ask this same question again? Yes. We must. It's why this website is named what it is. Why Did Peter Sink? Because he looked away from Jesus. How was he saved? He asked for help. He said, “Lord, save me!”Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand and caught him, and said to him, “O you of little faith, why did you doubt?” (Mt 14:22-33)Why did we doubt? Why did we jump into the fight again? Why do we do what we do? Because you think you got this. You assume superiority. You want power and honor. But let it be known: you ain't got nothin'. Jesus is seated in heaven, waiting. He is not cheering for our ego. He is not waving the flag of America. Or did we all fool ourselves into thinking that it was Jesus that helped Jefferson craft the Declaration? I think we did. This “City on a Hill” tale is an invention. America does not have divine guidance. Let go of that fairy tale. Thomas Jefferson was a Deist that completely denied the divinity of Christ. Or do we imagine that Jesus got us walking on water like a toddler in 1776, and then we learned to do miracles alone without him, while we still kept slaves and were westward-ho steamrolling natives? Does any of this sound like the work of Jesus Christ that he performed in this world? The greatest fib of America is that this is a Christian nation, as it wasn't in the beginning, is not now, and never will be. There has always been many, many Christians in America, and that is why the nation has had such success. But as for the Founders and their ideals, it is a foundation built on sand from the Enlightenment. The fact that Lincoln and many presidents were believers does not mean that Christianity ruled in Washington. Without millions of Christians as bedrock, the Deist ideas collapse, as we are now seeing with liberalism and modernism. It was families - black, white, or in-between - rooted in Christian values that provided the glue the entire time. It was not politicians or businessmen. If anything, the wealthy used Christians as instruments to get what they wanted, because, after all, “God helps those who help themselves.” Following God's will is a goal of Christians, and nefarious forces are always at work to use and abuse that. Those who “help themselves” throughout history have looked at other people, especially Christians, like a shovel to be used for their own projects, not as tools to carry out God's will. Not everything America has done is evil, and not everything it has done is good, but America is not the marker or sign of the last days any more than was Imperial Japan or the Spanish Empire. We are in the final age, the messianic age, and it was not called or named the “American age.” Unhitch your nationalism from the message of Christ, otherwise you are taking up Jesus' non-compete clause and using it as a club. Jesus is not cheering for America any more than he is the Dallas Cowboys. He is cheering for us to carry out his Great Commission, to spread the word, to believe, to keep his commandments, to be joyful sinners, and move toward holiness by keeping practice of the Sacraments. Jesus rules over all of the nations, all of the powers and principalities of this world, which includes the United States. This current moment is just the latest empire in a long list of empires. We are just another Babylon, another Rome. They all crumble, but God's kingdom is here and being slowly worked out. The slowness is the hard part, since we are accustomed to getting what we want immediately. We think the world is under our control, but it's not, and we tire of waiting to we help ourselves and forget about God. That's how we fall into the water. That's how a nation sinks. We get cocky and forget of our frailty. We get rich and comfortable. What happens to nations, happens to the Church, too, just as it does for individuals, just as it did for Peter on the water. There is no way to be saved but through him, with him, in him, in the person of Christ. The focus must remain on him. He is the question, the answer, the truth, the way, the light, the life. Neither our selves nor the Constitution of this country can save you. Science can't save you. Money can't save you. Only He can. We are the people of a lost empire that thinks it is has been found. Individuals within this empire have been found, but the empire itself is foundering. The whole structure has been long held up by believers, but their arms are fewer now and fatigue is setting in. Shortly after World War II, somewhere in the 1960s, the soul of nation turned away from God. Then the fall began, as we began to value sex, drugs, and “the college experience” more than the gifts of the Holy Spirit. All authority began to tumble. As Satan said in Paradise Lost, “Better to reign in hell than serve in heaven.” That became the national motto and adolescence began to creep past its sell-by date. Duty was replaced with honor for the derelict. Now we move into a last phase, where the drunk sailors are in the command center, guiding us to destruction, assuring us that desires alone make for a meaningful identity, and they are assuring us of this, even as we run aground. Thank God we can get lost. Part of his plan is to find the lost sheep. If we follow Jesus' own ministry on earth, he plays the shepherd the entire time, right to the last moments on the Cross when we converts the Penitent Thief. Getting lost is the only way to get found. There is much hope yet. God's plan exceeds our understanding, but he has allowed billions to stray. Could his plan for the smart phone be to reach every last soul on earth? Many end-times writers like to focus on Matthew 24:14:“And this gospel of the kingdom will be preached throughout the world as a witness to all nations, and then the end will come.”Since God is outside of space and time, he moves salvation history along on his schedule, not ours. Just as Abraham did not begin forming a nation until languages and cities were established, and Jesus did not come until writing had advanced considerably, who is to say that God's allowance of our scrolling on our phones is not the next phase of his plan. Surely most people today has heard of Christ, but not everyone has yet. What better way to reach all people than through a common language, or better yet, a common protocol like http. It's entirely possible that DARPA and Tim Berners-Lee and Steve Jobs were unlikely instruments of God, and by serving themselves (a.k.a. mammon) they will end up serving God. In the meantime, confusion spins our people around as we seem to directing our lives, and our children's lives, with a misaimed compass. To realize that the needle has been sitting next to magnet and steering you off course is terrifying, but it's a relief to even discover that you were going the wrong direction, because then you can take action to change course. Once you finally turn, you can find true north. A person who strays can still be saved. A nation that gets lost can be born again. The word “blessing” means to be “kneeled,” so we should keep saying, over and over, “God bless America, and God please bless me,” because a kneeling is exactly what we need to find peace. How is that to be done? The same way it was done to the Roman empire and every other empire. The nation will be exorcised when people turn to God. When Jesus said, “Repent, for the Kingdom of God is at hand,” he meant it for you, not an abstract thing like America or China. God's salvation plan continues, in ways that we cannot understand, but we know what to do. We need to believe. We need to surrender our lives to God, and be joyful, and keep his commandments, and give to the poor. Forget about the evil that others are selling and focus on the words of Jesus - all focus on all of his words, not just the ones you like. Love God. Love others. Be joyful. Volunteer. Read the Gospel. Tell others about it. Read the Catechism. Go to Confession. Go to Mass. Kneel. Receive the Eucharist. Repeat. This is a public episode. It's an unhappy 200th birthday for us, we do a postmortem of the little rail strike couldn't. Is the blame on the squad, Brandon, the unions, or the workers themselves? And what comes next for rail workers and class struggle in general? The common language of Babel is a more subtle message than the idea of language as we think of it. The mention of the Table of Nations right before the Tower of Babel is a key connection to make. If we want to know why did Russia invade Ukraine, or Caesar cross the Rubicon, we can step back and ask ourselves, what common language do all nations speak? Or closer to home, what common language do we all as individuals speak? The common language is not only seen in war, but that is the grossest and most full expression of it. The bombs being lobbed into apartment buildings in Kiev are shouting the language right now. But really our common language can be heard in the nicest of phrases, and spoken from the kindest of faces. A few good examples of the common language are as follows: Benjamin Franklin, in the 18th century, said, “God helps those who helps themselves.” That is one version of the common language. A more blunt version of the common language is from the 21st century rapper, Fifty Cent, who said, “Get rich or die trying.” Ben Franklin and Fifty Cent speak the same language. Yes, they both speak English, but more importantly, they speak the original common language, the ancient one, the same as those who were building the Tower of Babel. Franklin and Fifty are expressing the same idea in different words, separated by a few hundred years. Ben and Fifty are fluent in the the pre-Babel language of “making a name for themselves.” Both orient their lives toward the goal of gaining money and taking power. Gordon Gecko's famous line spoke the language, fully dropping the facade of Franklin, when he said, “Greed is good.” Franklin invented a proverb that almost sounds Biblical, but rest assured, it is not. God does not help those that help themselves. He would much rather that they imitate Jesus and give their lives to prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. For all the contributions Franklin made to the founding of America, he did not in any way imitate Jesus. Moral perfection was an interest of Franklin, so long as it was achieved without the Christian God. He tackled the subject in a truly modern way, even using a paper version of a spreadsheet to track his progress, working on one virtue at a time. Father Scupoli was a few hundred years ahead of Franklin, when in 1589 he said, “Virtues are to be required one at a time and by degrees,” except Scupoli's project included God and required no spreadsheet. In many ways, Franklin's paper project was attempting exactly the same thing that was happening at the construction site in Babel, just without masonry or mortar. Let's talk more about Benjamin Franklin, the gentle old bespectacled grandfatherly figure of American history who graces the front side of every one hundred dollar bill in print. He is a fascinating character who embodies much of the American character and the best intentions of the Enlightenment. First, Franklin was a Deist, not a Christian. The same goes for George Washington. Franklin was also a practicing Freemason. Even if Washington and Franklin publicly claimed to be Christian, as practicing Freemasons, they likely just found references to God useful for advancing their own public lives among the peasants. This is important to understand, as this is the same root motive that drives an ancient people to build a Ziggurat. The ancient people went to great lengths to justify their power, requiring a lot of stone and labor. Nations needed an awesome structure to control the people, while the Deists of the Enlightenment just declared man and his mind to be the tallest. The modern temple is intellectual, existing in the mind, but still requires assent of the masses. There is just no need to build a tower to reach the sky now, because no lower-case gods need ritual sacrifices or transactions. (We actually do have plenty of rituals and sacrifices still with us, but they are not as obvious now, and I'll need a whole separate series to discuss that topic.)Instead of building towers, the Deists kept the upper-case God in our mouths, but tried to move him off-stage, kind of like giving a lifetime achievement award to a good actor that never won an Oscar. Jefferson threw God a medal in the Declaration of Independence and then asked him to kindly step aside and retire. To this day, a nod toward God goes a long way for politicians, even as they completely ignore him in their policies and personal lives. Of course, everyone is a sinner, so it's not surprising or even noteworthy that people fall down and appear hypocritical, so I'm not pointing out the failure of politicians to be “good” Christians. What I am suggesting that very few of the Founders were Christian at all, because a practicing Freemason like Franklin or Washington cannot be a Christian any more than a practicing Jew could be a Hindu. They do not go together. Attempting to claim co-existence of Christianity and Freemasonry requires a lot of spinning plates and hula hoops and tambourines and fireworks. Freemasonry is an open rejection of the living God of Israel, and certainly the Trinitarian God of Christianity. Franklin believed in a Clockmaker God, a being who set the stars in motion and left the lights on before retiring into the beyond. He's like a gamer who started a video game on auto-mode and went to bed. The Deist idea of God is a Creator that requires no worship and demands nothing. In other words, it's an absentee father who left long ago and left us free to do whatever we like. The Clockmaker version of God has no relation whatsoever with the living God of Christian faith, because that Bible ends at chapter two of Genesis. Nothing more is needed beyond creation. Why am I picking on Ben Franklin here? He is the poster child of the common language spoken by the architects of Babel. Franklin spoke the language of Babel, because the language of Babylon is declaring a deity that either serves us, or doesn't matter, or both. A Ziggurat is an expensive, fancy way of trying to communicate with and manipulate a god. This required a lot of ritual and song and dance and smoke to sell the idea. But what happens with a Ziggurat is the same thing that happens with Deism. The human, the self, bubbles up as the new deity. Pride rises like hot air and overtakes humility, and the virtues get swapped. Pride rises, humility sinks; it very much matches the behavior of hot and cold air masses. Humility kneels, while pride tries to grasp God.Franklin did not try to deny that God exists, but rather to deny that God matters. This trick makes for a dead deity instead of a living God still present with us. The Clockmaker God opens the door to this. The result of the long onslaught of Enlightenment thinking is a polite depositing of God in the dustbin of history. If you punch your vote for the Clockmaker God, like Franklin did in his weekly Masonic meetings, then there is little or no difference from denying the existence of God entirely, or making bogus sacrifices in a Ziggurat to justify your power. The false gods of Babel were made in the image and likeness of the ruling class, and the Clockmaker God's image and likeness doesn't matter at all because he's on permanent vacation. More importantly, the Clockmaker God is not needed to forgive anything, because just like the rulers of Babel, the rules are decided by those in power, or in other words, “those who help themselves.” The pagan god who demanded sacrifice was not alive, but at least the illusion was more lively than that of the Clockmaker God. When the authority of the living Creator God who sustains all things is gone, then there is nothing holding back “those who help themselves.” The proverb of Franklin is essentially a nice way of arguing for will-to-power, as in, win at all costs. In Franklin's cosmology, there is no cosmic justice, no everlasting judgment, and the conscience is just a nag that you need to stifle. The cookie jar is just as open and unattended with the Clockmaker God of a deist as it is for the atheist who says there is no God at all. In fact, the atheist is really the only honest one. This is why I think our age of atheism has a lot of people coming around, the long way, back to belief in the true God, the living Creator God. All of the other trick gods are so obviously false (Zeus) or pointless (deism), that the only God that makes sense, the only one that can even satisfy the intellect and give purpose to our lives, is the transcendent living Creator God. All the other gods don't matter or are total frauds. In any other cosmos than that of the God of Abraham, we can do whatever we like, and like Franklin, we can help ourselves to whatever we like. A dead or silent God leads directly from Jean-Jacques Rousseau to Michel Foucault. A pagan god can at least command fear, but without that new methods are needed. The thunder god who throws lightning and causes storms only has power through fear. The storm god keeps the lightning nearby to strike if he is disrespected, as he is the one who unleashes havoc on the world. He must be appeased with worship, otherwise he will show us who is boss. The storm god that oddly matches worldly power, in that he is in competition with creation and craves adoration as payment. If he gets what he wants, you will receive a reward. There are many modern Christians who understand God in this way and need to break free from this model, because they are playing the same game of Babel as well. On the other hand, a Clockmaker God commands nothing. He is the god of indifference. A God that created matter and exited the stage, doesn't matter at all. It's like a teacher who leaves the classroom and tells the students to behave. He's a powerless joke. The hall monitor is gone, so what's the difference between an absent God that created the universe against a pre-existing universe with no God at all? There is none. The latter is just much easier to live with, except you need something called “the rule of law” to assert control by pretending at objective truth. The funny thing is, however, that the ground for objective truth starts to shake when it's just a set of rules etched in stone outside a courthouse. Eventually people see through this game as well. What we call “the rule of law” is our new storm god, in the form of courts, police, and in its most full form, SWAT teams and the National Guard. As the masses come around more to match Franklin's idea of God, or worse, Marx's idea of God, the jig is up. The pretense of objective truth gets jettisoned for “my truth.” In either case, there are no rules except what we decide. Ziggurat or no Ziggurat: the god of Babel and the God of Franklin is the one that “helps those who help themselves.” The only thing that comes to matter in this worldview is power. That is the common language of Babel. That is what we want. However, a living God that knows the number of hairs on your head matters a great deal. That God is the only one that can change our behavior out of love. There is a reason that the God of the Bible has lasted so long. This God satisfies our souls. He fits our lives. He explains everything. He is also the only real one. The God of Israel, who we have come to understand better in the revelation of the Trinity, is the only one that can make all of our difficulties in life suddenly fall into place, just like he did in creating the universe. Once this concept of God is understood, both suffering and love begin to make sense. The main reason this happens, and keeps happening in every generation, is because, this God is real, and this God is alive. The language that is being spoke in the Tower of Babel story is not really referring to Sumerian or Akkadian or Greek or Latin. No, it means a worldview that celebrates a culture of competition, power-seeking, comfort-seeking, possession-seeking, and pleasure-seeking. What we really want is God to approve our desires, but our conscience is God's messenger that lets us know in subtle ways that he will never approve of those things. The worldview or common language is the little voice that tells us otherwise, that suggests that we elevate our pursuits over the glory of God. What we want, instinctually, is salvation independent of God. A Ziggurat is built to pull the gods down, to shape god to match our human pursuits, to justify ourselves. The correct approach to God is to stop trying to manipulate him, because he cannot be manipulated, and rather we need to conform our human pursuits to the will of the one true God. 30 Days of Thankfulness3. Thankful for what we have Dan Bidwell, Senior Pastor Deuteronomy 6:4-12; Hebrews 13:5 Sunday 20 November, 2022 I was looking for something in my desk drawer this week when I found this a wad of cash from different countries Ive travelled to. Theres money from Fiji, and the United Arab Emirates, and Tanzania. But this stack means the most to me. Its from Rwanda. Right before I moved here to become your pastor, I had the privilege of traveling back and forth to Rwanda for 2 weeks each year, teaching a theology certificate course to pastors and church workers, most of whom had no formal theological education. It was a super rewarding experience. But one of the things Im reminded of when I hold this stack of 1000 RWF notes, is how cheap everything feels when youre in a country like that. You can buy a coffee for 1,500RWF ($1.50), or a burger and fries for $4. A meal at this amazing rooftop bar in the city is $8. And at the best restaurant in Kigali, dinner and drinks still comes out less than $35pp. Like I said, it feels cheap compared to here. Until you realize what the average Rwandan earns. Some earn as little as 1000RWF, or USD$1 a day. So my spare change is worth a days work for someone else. If you tipped $1 on your coffee order, it would be like giving a $100 tip to the person receiving it. To put it in perspective, at the end of my last visit to Rwanda, we were having a celebration dinner, and one of my students leaned over the table to ask me a question privately. She said: Is it true in your country, that you have a machine that washes the clothes. Yes, I said. And do you have one? Can you imagine a world without a washing machine? How much longer it would take to do everyday tasks? That was the world that many of my students were living in. Still are living in, I would think. To somebody in Rwanda, if you own a washing machine, that makes you an incredibly wealthy person. 1 Do you own a washing machine? A dishwasher? By some standards, that makes you an incredibly wealthy person... But thats not how we measure wealth, is it?In the Western mindset, wealth is abundance. Excess. Luxury. Opulence. With that definition, not many of us would class ourselves as wealthy. But as we enter into Thanksgiving week, I want to challenge that definition of wealth. I want us to understand how much we truly have, so that we can be thankful for it. And more to the point, to be thankful to the one who gave it to us. So why dont we pray that the Giver of all things would speak to us now as we open his word. Our heavenly Father, you are the giver of all things. Will you teach us now as we open the Bible. Teach us how to view our wealth, and how to be truly thankful. Challenge us and change us, we ask. In Jesus name. Amen Well, we are in the middle of our 30 Days of Thankfulness. This series is all about deepening our gratitude in daily ways. To help, we have our 30 Days of Thankfulness prayer guide (which you can download or pick up a paper copy on the welcome desk). Im on Day 18 which is Thank God for the Bible. It says: We are so blessed to have access to [Gods] word, to be able to own it, house it in our homes and in our hearts, to read it and experience its life-giving power. It is the guide by which we are to live [...] Thank God that you have access to God-breathed, supernatural knowledge through his Holy Word. Here at Yountville Community Church, we are thankful for the Bible! And every Sunday at church, we read the Bible carefully to hear what God says to us in it. And so today as we think about being thankful, I want to base what I say on what God says. This is his wisdom, shared with us, because he loves us. So Ive entitled this sermon: Thankful for what we have. Premise: Redefining Wealth Lets start by coming back to our definition of wealth. Like I said a moment ago, in the Western mindset, we think of wealth as abundance, excess, luxury and opulence. And not many of us live that lifestyle, at least not all the time, and so we dont think of ourselves as wealthy. 2 But what if we defined wealth in a different way. What if wealth was about having enough...? David Kotter in his book For the Least of These: A Biblical Answer to Poverty defines wealth like this: Wealth ... will be defined as a suitable accumulation of resources and possessions of value. Under this simple definition, one is wealthy to the extent that one has sufficient food of good quality, clothing appropriate to keeping cool or warm, and shelter for protection from the elements. In a modern economy, this definition is often extended to include access to safe and reliable transportation and communication that enables one to work. Wealth includes adequate physical possessions to live and flourish as a human being created in the image of God, and it also requires a specific heart attitude toward the purpose of possessions. (David Kotter, For the Least of These: A Biblical Answer to Poverty) If we start with a different definition of wealth, that wealth is about having enough, then by that definition, all of us here are wealthy. Is your home secure and dry? Do you have food in the pantry? Were you able to get here today? Then you are wealthy. I am wealthy. And the first step to being thankful for what we have is acknowledging that we are wealthy. We might not have everything we want, but we have a lot to be thankful for... So thats the premise I want to begin with: we need to redefine wealth. We need to see what we have with fresh eyes, and understand that we have great wealth. 1. Remember where our wealth comes from In an old episode of the Simpsons, Bart is asked to say grace. He says:Dear God, we paid for all this stuff ourselves, so thanks for nothing. Amen. The watching adults gasp. Mr Burns chuckles and says, Only an innocent child could get away with such blasphemy. God bless them all. But Barts caustic honesty is funny because, as comedy so often does, it pierces through the veneer of polite sentiment and says aloud what many of the watching adults are actually thinking anyway. We did go to work. We did earn the money. We did pay for this stuff ourselves. So why all the thanksgiving to a God we cant see?1 1 The Generosity Project, p21 3 The Bibles answer is that the God we cant see created everything we can see. And touch and hear and feel, including us. He created it all. In Psalm 50:12, God says:the world is mine, and all that is in it. (Psalm 50:12) Everything that is in the world belongs to God. And the Bible goes on to say that he is the one who feeds, and sustains us. He is the one who gives us everything we have. In James 1:17, it says: 7 Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father... (James 1:17) In the OT, Gods people had to learn that lesson in a very tangible way. When they were too afraid to enter the Promised Land, God caused his people to wander in the desert for 40 years. But every day he fed them, causing mana to fall down like dew from the sky a good and perfect gift from above. And do you remember that he gave them just enough for one day a time, so that they would remember who it was that fed them... Do you know who feeds you, day to day? Who gives you your daily bread? Who gives you every breath you take? Who sustains you and keeps you and watches over you while you sleep? When we think about what we have, we need to remember where it came from. It comes from our Father in heaven. And our Father says its especially important to remember that truth, when we have more than just our daily bread. And thats where our Deuteronomy reading comes into play. One of the big storylines of the OT is Gods promise to bring his people into a land they could call their own. The Promised Land, the land that God originally promised to Abraham. And hundreds of years later, Gods people would finally enter that Promised Land a land flowing with milk and honey, this place that symbolized Gods blessing and Gods provision and Gods generosity towards his people. He was going to make them rich. But listen to the warning he gives them in Deuteronomy 6 (reading from v10): 10 When the Lord your God brings you into the land he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, to give youa land with large, flourishing cities you did not 4 11 houses filled with all kinds of good things you did not provide, wells you did not build, dig, and vineyards and olive groves you did not plantthen when you eat and are 12 be careful that you do not forget the Lord, who brought you out of Egypt, satisfied, out of the land of slavery. (Deuteronomy 6:10-12) Can you imagine that Gods people get to move into this country where they get to enjoy the fruits of somebody elses work. They move into houses they did not build, they get to drink from wells they didnt dig, eat from orchards they didnt plant. They receive this inheritance that comes from the hard work of someone else. Actually it comes from God. And God warns them not to forget him when they receive their inheritance! When he blesses them with all kinds of wealth, they must be careful not to forget him. PAUSE What if the wealth we have is just like the wealth they had? What if we have what we have because God has chosen to bring us into the place where we find ourselves? What if our success is not just the product of our own hard work. Its also because God chose to bless you in the ways that he has. We are living on the tail-end of the greatest wealth-generating period in history. Since WWII, Baby Now I know youve worked hard for what you earned, but every other generation in history also worked hard. You just happened to live through a period of unprecedented economic growth. Have you stopped to remember where that extraordinary growth comes from? Have you thanked God for including you in the greatest wealth-generating period in history? And have you thought about how you might give back some of the wealth that he has given you? 2. The art of contentment John D. Rockefeller, arguably the worlds richest person in the early 1900s, was asked by a reporter how much money is enough. He replied, Just a little bit more! Just a little bit more... 2 https://www.forbes.com/sites/markhall/2019/11/11/the-greatest-wealth-transfer-in-history-whats-happening-and- what-are-the-implications/ 2 Boomers (those born between 1944 and 1964) this is your generation, isnt it? the US (and Australia too) have seen decades of prosperity and economic growth. 5 At our house, we love renovation TV. Theres this couple out of Utah who just design amazing homes (Studio McGee). And then theres Chip and Jo from Waco, Texas who bring this farmhouse chic to everything they do. And theyre Christians too, so we like them even more for that. We love watching those shows. But Ive realized they arent necessarily good for us. Because renovation TV is built on the premise of just a little bit more... Just a little bit more decoration, and youll be a happier person. Just little bit more kitchen, and youll have a better family life. Just a little bit more, and your life will be fulfilled... Just a little bit more... But how much more will be enough? A survey of regular churchgoers in the USA found that almost 90% say greed is a sin; only 20% say they were ever taught that wanting a lot of money is wrong; and almost 80% wish they had 3 Now theres nothing wrong with having money. We are embodied creatures, we have physical needs for food and shelter, and the way we meet those needs in this world is usually through the exchange of work for money so that we can buy what we need. Anthropology Economy 101. The danger is when our desire for money becomes greed.Perhaps the richest man who ever lived, King Solomon, wrote this in his book Ecclesiastes: Whoever loves money never has enough;whoever loves wealth is never satisfied with their income. (Ecclesiastes 5:10) Solomon was just like Rockefeller. The danger is that no matter how much we have, its never enough... And the Bible warns us that this never enough attitude can have destructive consequences in our lives. The Apostle Paul writes:9 Those who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and 10 more money than they do.Seems 80% of us share the spirit of John D. Rockefeller. Just a little bit more... harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction.a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. (1 Timothy 6:6-10) 3 Brian Rosner, Beyond Greed, p18 For the love of money is 6 This is strong language, isnt it? - Temptation - A trap - Foolish and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin - Destruction - A root of evil - Wandering away from the faith - Causing all kinds of grief If this was an ad for medication on the television, there is no way you would ask your doctor to prescribe you the love of money. The love of money wont bring happiness. It will kill you! We only need to look at crippling debt, and crippling work hours that plunge individuals into ruin. Then there are the industries that prey on the financially vulnerable, modern slavery and human trafficking, which are financially motivated and nothing short of evil. And then there are Christians who get so focused on work and financial success that they let their faith go along the way... One compromise after another until one day they wake up and God isnt even in the picture anymore. Thats if they even notice that God was missing. Jesus said we can only worship one thing well either choose God, or money. Gordon Gecko was wrong. Greed is not good. Greed is a killer. And so whats the antidote? The answer is: Contentment. Have a look at Hebrews 13:5 with me: Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said,Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you. (Hebrews 13:5)Did you see that right in the middle? Be content with what you have... Theologian Dr Brian Rosner in his book Beyond Greed says: be content with what you have: these six words form one of the most difficult commands in the Bible, especially in our day of ingrained consumerism and unquestioned materialism. The worlds approach to contentment is by way of addition. 4 Brian Rosner, Beyond Greed, p90 4 7 The worlds approach to contentment is by way of addition. Getting more things. But God says be content with what you have. Look at what you have and be happy. I was thinking about how to do this practically for myself. I dont know about you, but I look around my home and Im often thinking what I would change. Or fix. What if instead we looked around our home and picked up one of our possessions and just enjoyed it. Or thanked God for it? What if you got in your car and played I Spy with all the things that bring you joy? People often ask me what I miss about Australia. I miss living near the ocean. Somebody who was over at our house recently said, when you drive through the vineyards, thats your ocean. Do you see how just a little mental adjustment can shift your attitude? You could buy a gratitude journal and spend a few minutes each day writing down all the things youre thankful for. You could make a habit of sharing something youre grateful for before dinner each day make your grace a real thanksgiving. And then when it comes to contentment, I really think we have to break the stranglehold of consumerism. The idea that more will make me happier: it never does. It just leaves us wanting more. And so perhaps we choose to live with less. We simplify. If you dont spend enough time on your boat to justify the expense, perhaps you could live without it. If you dont get to the gym or the country club often enough, is it worth keeping the membership? Do you really need a new car, or new golf clubs, or new shoes? Or could you find contentment with what you have already? And this brings me to the last idea. 3. Enjoy the One who gives you wealth Weve been thinking about how to be thankful for what we have. So we started with the premise that we all enjoy considerable wealth, just by virtue of having enough to live comfortably. Then we were reminded that all we have is the gift of God. He has given us everything we have, and so we ought not forget him, especially when we find ourselves very well off. Because greed is destructive. And so instead we need to cultivate contentment. But heres the catch. God wants us to enjoy the things that he gives us. And to find contentment in them. But he doesnt just want to watch on from a distance. God wants to be part of our lives. We shouldnt just enjoy the gifts God gives us we should enjoy the Giver as well! Years ago, a friend at church gave me his guitar. We played in a band together, and I had a guitar that wasnt that great. And when Tom bought a beautiful new guitar, he gave me his old 8 one. I love that guitar. Its a great instrument. And when I play it, I often remember who it came from. And the generosity of Tom to pass it on to me. The guitar is kind of a symbol of our friendship. The gift and the giver are tied together. And thats the conclusion that Solomon came to. If were to be content with what we have, if were to enjoy what we have, we have to enjoy it with the Giver. 24 A person can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in their own 25 toil. This too, I see, is from the hand of God, enjoyment? (Ecclesiastes 2:24-25) for without him, who can eat or find This Thanksgiving, where will you find your enjoyment? Shall we pray? 9

Jonathan begins this episode with a review of a recent book on economic systems: Is Capitalism Obsolete?: a Journey Through Alternative Economic Systems by Giacomo Corneo. This episode kicks off the discussion of Chapter 4 of Part 1. The title of the chapter, The Immovable Movers, carries allusions to Ancient Greek philosophical traditions connected to the creation of the cosmos. Jonathan explains some of the connections to Aristotle, Parmenides, and Thomas Aquinas. Following that, Jonathan explores the question of achievement and symbiosis as they relate to human nature. The first paragraph of the chapter brings up questions about the definition of motivation. When we see Dagny's frustration with the New Jersey locomotive company, we have to wonder how much of the interpersonal problem is rooted in face-saving and how much of the problem is rooted in a lack of empathy. After discussing MacNamara's disappearance, Jonathan analyzes Dagny's moment of despair as it relates to the theme of motion. As Dagny walks along the city street, she sees a book advertisement that has a simplistic attack on "a businessman's greed." Jonathan presents some context for the word greed in American culture by referencing the movie Wall Street and the character Gordon Gecko. Dagny's last view on the street captures Rand's critique of a  leisure culture that thrives on personal sadness. My five themes to explore in this podcast's close read of Atlas Shrugged are:What is human nature?Straw-man arguments and their impact on the world Ayn Rand creates.Dagny Taggart as a true hero. How empathy can be de-legitimized.What is Capitalism and what is wrong with it? Questions or comments? The movie and TV industry have continually categorized the businessman as the villain. From Mr. Krabs to Gordon Gecko, the marketplace and money have become synonymous with power and greed. Why did this happen, and how does this impact the idea of our work being the fulfillment of the Great Commandment? There are plenty of examples of businesspeople genuinely being the bad guy, but these are the sin-broken counterfeit and not the real thing. On this week's podcast we discuss the real issue behind business and greed (hint: it's not the money). When we elevate anything above God, it hijacks God's original design for this life. Biblical business is about adding value, problem solving, and meeting needs of your fellow man – to love your neighbor as yourself. Keep God in the forefront and business won't be your idol, it will become your avenue to serve. For this week's missional moment, we talk to our friend Matthew Rohrs, Executive Director of Sinapis. Sinapis fosters entrepreneurial development in some of the poorest places around the globe. They believe entrepreneurship and poverty alleviation go together, and Matthew is leading the charge to equip and release thousands of global entrepreneurs to the glory of God. When I was 18 all I wanted to be was successful, which at that time to me just meant rich. I pictured myself with the fancy car, expensive apartment and crushing it as a business man like Gordon Gecko in Wolf on Wall Street. But something I’ve been reflecting on lately is how glad I am that plans I had for my life when I was younger didn’t work out. My life now is tremendously richer in many more ways than I ever could have imagined at 18. When things don’t go according to plan it’s usually for a reason we aren’t quite capable of understanding yet. It’s important to maintain a level of humbleness and grace (and a little bit of humor doesn’t hurt either). I’ve learned that getting upset won’t change what’s happening in the moment. And maybe sometimes things don’t go according to plan so that better things can fall into place. On this episode, I'm talking with Yaron Brook, Chair of the Ayn Rand Institute, in a wide-ranging conversation that launches into the case for why the profit motive is a good thing. Capitalism gets a bad rap in the media and pop culture, but should business be epitomized by Gordon Gecko or Steve Jobs? Was the 2008 financial crisis caused by greedy Wall Streeters or by wrongheaded government policies?  We agree that finance, properly understood, is about “win/win” strategies to move capital to more productive uses, but what about all the people left behind by capitalism's “creative destruction?  Are Americans any longer willing to do what's necessary to create their own future. We also talk about his view that our moral purpose should be our own happiness and that self-interest is not wrong.  We part company on trade with China and on Donald Trump, but wholeheartedly agree on the need for an optimistic freedom agenda that embraces America's founding ideas.

Braggadocio is a fabulous word with a great history to its orrigin - find out what it means to your business and its implications. Podcast Transcript Today. I saw something on Twitter, which caught my attention. I must admit I've become a real user of Twitter a lot over the years. I've stopped reading newspapers, which is bad for the newspaper industry, but I'm fond of Twitter, I don't participate in it much, but I like to read it. I also find it's a great aggregator of all the news that's going on. Just don't get too wrapped up in it. However, there was this tweet that came through this morning. It was a beauty, and it was regarding Trump's estranged niece in her new book, where she depicts a man trained in deception and braggadocio, by a distant and dysfunctional father. I just loved that word “braggadocio.” It sounds Italian. I mean, it's got an Italian ending, and if you actually look at what it means according to the dictionary, braggadocio means boastful or arrogant behaviour. That word always resonated with me. My mother used to use it. When I was a kid, I can always remember her saying to me. “Peter, pride comes before a fall.” To be honest with you. I think that held me back a little. When I was young, I was too scared to put my head up and get knocked down because this pride was always going to come right before a fall, but I understood, and I understood a little later that what she was saying. It was “be aware of being arrogant.” There's nothing wrong with being proud. There's nothing wrong with being proud of your achievements, but it was the arrogance that you had to watch out for. Of course, if you have been around long enough, you tend to see popular culture trends, come and go and come back go again, with a slightly different twist. It wasn't easy to accept my mother's advice when observing the great Cassius Clay as I was growing up. When he was young and was brash, arrogant, and confident, I think at the time I thought, “Yeah, he's got pride, but a fall is coming.” And obviously once he became Muhammad Ali, he really showed his conviction and wouldn't go to the war, he was prepared to go to jail and was prepared to lose his title and win it back. You realise that the man stood for something. Maybe all that false bravado of being the greatest was actually part of an act, whereas deep down, he was a really nice guy. So the greatest as he was called, and till his death, he was still known as the greatest. Flick forward to the 1980's, and that was the time of Gordon Gekko and “greed is good”. At that point, I suppose you could say that in popular culture, the tilt wasn't too far away. And in my mother's eyes, Gordon Gecko would have been someone that she would have said “there's a braggadocio.” And then this guys pride was definitely going to come before a fall and of course, as the movie would have it that's exactly what happened. Then came the period when super model Naomi Campbell started to exhibit the most arrogant behaviour, where she was convicted and almost went to jail for throwing a phone at her personal assistant. It was at about that point that the world got tired of “braggadocio.” The world had had enough of being too arrogant and to the point that one would be a celebrity if they started helping others. Mother Theresa and Princess Diana for example were celebrated during that whole period. Being nice to people became the accepted norm. If you think about it, perhaps particularly Princess Diana got as much exposure, and got as much opportunity as any previous braggadocio. But you could see there was goodness in their hearts. However, then came 2000, and all of a sudden arrogance came back into vogue The Kardashians and a number of others; greed was becoming good, arrogance was becoming good, being noticed was becoming good, being extreme was becoming good, being opinionated was becoming good again the list goes on and on. Trumpism, as we know, it started to appear and being extremist started being normalised. Also in today's Twitter feed, the same day the niece of the president was saying that he was a braggadocio, here was Anthony Scaramucci, who did once work for the braggadocio, who said “every once in a while, like your mother told you, or your grandmother told you, sometimes people get what they deserve. It is nice to see that the negative karma that he generated in our society is coming back upon him”, said, Anthony Scaramucci about Steve Bannon's arrest, who was the braggadocio in arms – co-pilot. Isn't that interesting, either Scaramucci had an Italian mother, or an Italian grandmother, but he obviously was told that pride comes before a fall just like I was. Today's Twitter feed also contained commentary by Peter van Onselen who writes for NEWS CORP, he goes, “I sometimes seriously wonder if our prime minister thinks before he opens his mouth and makes pronouncements he constantly has to walk back from. It happens too often to just be a mistake. It's pretty ridiculous, frankly”.  So he's questioning our prime minister who this week couldn't help himself, indicating that he'd signed a deal on a vaccine for all Australian people. But of course it wasn't soon after that holes started to appear with this story and the deal. So just maybe this brash arrogance in politics is starting to catch up with people, and just maybe the pendulum is starting to swing the other way. What is even more evidence of the contempt the politicians have of the people, is on Fridays, which is known as “take out the garbage day.” The whole idea of take out the bad news, or take out when you've got to correct something, or take out when you've got to walk back on something like the treasurer Josh Frydenberg had to walk back on the job keeper allowance and his dodgy mathematics, and straighten up a $60 million over estimate., So you're bringing that out on a Friday because the media is apparently lazy, and won't ask hard questions, and society is lazy, our community is lazy, and by Monday, we will have forgotten all about it. But do we forget about it? Is braggadocio still alive and well on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday? I think the pendulum has swung. I think the pendulum's heading back towards at least the central line possibly even left of centre. I'm thinking all of a sudden that boastful and arrogant behaviour may not be acceptable any more. Even in marketing, we need to be cognisant of this trend. In marketing we have to know where people are, and we have to act accordingly. So where was the word braggadocio derived from? Well, it came from the fairy queen, which was written by a fellow called Spencer. It's a long poem, and it was about Knights in shining armour. One of the knights was called Braggadocio and he didn't end too well.

Stephen Fry's Great Leap Years

Avarice, or Greed as we would call it today, now there’s a proper vice, one we can all surely identify with, claim and confess to. One of the defining quotations of the materialistic 1980s came from the fictional character Gordon Gecko, the junk bond pirate played by Michael Douglas in the Oliver Stone film, Wall Street. “Greed,” he tells a dinner of fellow financiers, “for lack of a better word, is good. Greed is right, greed works”. It’s easy to dismiss this. Your instinct might be to shake your head sadly, or scoff angrily. Yet... See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

As the Gordon Gecko character famously said in the 1987 film Wall Street, "greed is good". Somehow, we have a sneaking suspicion that you don't agree.    Now, consider this, research shows that 80% of restaurant jobs provide poverty level wages, while up to 20% of the jobs in the industry provide a livable wage. You know which skin tone occupies most of those 20% worth of jobs, right? Hey, we know you're not okay with that either. Why? Coz we know you're sitting (or shall we stay standing on your feet all night) on the wrong side of that great color and pay divide.   On this latest episode, Host Eric Levine, explores the racial and economic inequalities (and yes, the greed) that exist in the restaurant industry which, by the way as he points out, is the second largest and fastest growing sector in the U.S. economy. Yes, Americans are a hungry (and an overweight) people. And you'd think that with nearly 1 in 12 Americans working in the restaurant industry, politicians and the left, and left leaning politicians would take it on themselves to address the sad truth that 7 of the 10 lowest paying occupations reported by the Bureau of Labor Statistics are in the restaurant industry.   It's all masked as the "Gig Economy". But let's face it, your "gig" ain't all that fun. It's just code for avoiding paying minimum wages, benefits and vacation. It sounds so sexy if you're drinking lattes in Brooklyn, but if you're washing dishes in the Bronx, it's not so pretty.    Contact Eric Levine at: eric@tipnotincluded.com

Gordon Gecko might say "technology is good" but Dirty Harry Callahan would add (paraphrasing for effect) that humans have to understand its limitations! In the 1970's I was fascinated with Texas Instruments calculators.  They quickly went from very basic to very complicated.  Just look at a modern-day financial calculator!  Today many of us seem unable do simple math without a calculator.  In the 1980's I was fascinated with dial-up modems and being able to send and receive email.  Then I was introduced to Lotus 1-2-3 and Symphony.  Wow!  In the 1990's I got my first home computer.  It had a huge storage capacity of 8 megs (yes, I said megs!) and enabled me to set up a spreadsheet for a pool team I ran.  I could also word process a weekly newsletter for my team. In 1996 I became a Real Estate agent.  The industry was evolving from what the more experienced agents call "the books" for distributing information about property listings to Internet-connected computers running on 3.5" disks.  Until that change, property listings were collected and disseminated to offices and agents in books every couple of weeks and manually searching for listings and comparable sales was time consuming and inexact to say the least.  The data was beyond stale when received.  It was a major achievement to be able to access information about property listings online and then in our homes! The Real Estate world shifted monumentally in the new century as the public was allowed to peer behind the curtain and get property listings in their homes and businesses, allowing them to bypass over a million trained agents who had controlled the data since the first cave dweller decided to relocate.  Over time, while the data was limited to active, coming soon and under contract listings, third-party web sites began using valuation models to help buyers and sellers "understand" the financial landscape better.  At least that was what they were told.  There is so much more to say about that but I want to focus on technology and how it has inserted itself into Real Estate. Seth Godin recently blogged about the evolution of technology and he accurately describes the first three cycles, stating the we are now in the fourth.  However, at least as far as Real Estate is concerned, the fourth, while on the horizon, is far from settled.  Sure, we saw a computer beat a Grand Master in chess and win on Jeopardy BUT they have not come close to perfecting a self-driving car and the track record with predicting home values is pathetic. So, while many of us will continue to love and embrace technology, with many being "early adopters", I would respectfully encourage my fellow humans to engage with professionals when it comes to Real Estate.  Buying and selling is not so easily predictive as answering a question, creating a question when offered an answer or even moving chess pieces and predicting the outcome of a head-to-head chess match.  There is no doubt that computers can do a seemingly endless array of lengthy calculations faster than we can blink or access a history of information if entered and stored properly but, can computers act illogically or emotionally?  Buying and selling Real Estate are emotional decisions justified with logic.  It is one thing to provide quick access to property listings and then to try to display comparable sales history to evaluate but it is quite another to create and present a purchase offer and then negotiate what may be many steps to make sure that both parties remain committed to completing a sale.  This is not a retail transaction! Technology has its place and there is no going backwards.  The critical factor is knowing its value, its limitations and where it fits into the process.  Information and data are not the sameas knowledge and insight!

Introduction of Mark and Embodied Yoga 2:04: Definition of Embodiment – Subjective aspect of the body 3:20 Mark came to embodiment yoga when he realised his life as a teenager was screwed up. With yoga and aikido, he realised there was a lot of beauty and richness in the movement and something in it for him. The next step how do I teach this to others. 4:25 Embodiment principles = life skills that can’t be learned from a book, i.e., leadership, yoga, stress management. Practical life skills: breathe, peripheral vision, relax your tummy are skills to bring down your stress levels. The yoga teacher models relaxation and this flows out to the class and they also relax. 7:04  Yoga off the Mat - YouTube videos of Mark teaching embodiment principles. Asking students to take up space and being seen – spreading the arms and legs out and making yourself big and then bringing the limbs in and ducking the head to be small. People will feel comfortable in one of the opposing poses and not in the other. What is the emotion attached to being uncomfortable, is this a pattern of living are questions to ask to build a practice for yourself off the mat. Can learn micropostures to do outside of the yoga class. Breath, extension, small movements of limbs that bring the essence of the pose and its emotional impact to daily life 12:00 Why and How does Yoga Change You? Being with positive ethical people in a yoga class Mindfulness of body, breath, emotions, posture Chemical mechanisms Practice gives you tools like persistence, dedication, etc. Mark’s aim is to make that transfer of change off the mat more effective and efficient 14:02 What is the biggest change you have made because of yoga: he’s alive, sober, and in an intimate relationship. Need self-awareness, self-care, an self-regulation to be in a long-term, happy ,intimate relationship. 15:25 Embodiment is looking at how you are feeling in this pose, not the perfection of the form. Teaches that the postures are good enough – safe and can use as an enquiry. Doesn’t obsess about the form, but rather the emotions generated by the pose.  “Where do I need this pose in my life?” 17:29 What as yoga practitioners can we learn from other movement modalities? First acknowledge that yoga is very dense and could be a life-long study. Other disciplines an provide off the mat benefits Can look at cultural bias Why are students choosing this type of movement; is it a good or bad pattern for them? 19:38 Students come to Mark to explore themselves through movement. Each teacher has to decide what their aims are and fashion the practice to meet the aims. Using whatever movement modality is best. Mark has developed a system for confronting and exploring oneself and how to change the things the student wants to change.  As an example, Mark may do svasana in the middle of a workshop since the purpose of the pose is to explore what the student is dead to in their life or as a hard-core death meditation. It is inappropriate for the end of the class. 23:10 Modern yoga has evolved into the guru, hippy, Gordon Gecko model. Each has its positive sides: guru has tradition, Gordon Gecko is based on evidence-based, logic, exploration and the hippy questions hierarchy, lack of equality, acknowledging feeling in the somatic body. They each have a negative side. 27:13 Yoga in the 21st Century – yoga for everyone and flexibility of approach. 28:00 Resources: Free - E-books (e.g., Making Yoga Meaningful), Embodiment podcast, YouTube videos for those who have been in yoga for awhile and wanting something deeper. Certified B Corps represent a new type of company. B corps are not only concerned about generating a profit, but also about making our world a better place by focusing on the positive social and/or environmental impacts of their business. Sensiba San Filippo (SSF) clearly embodies the B Corp spirit in its mission to enhance the lives of its employees and make positive impacts in its community. In May of 2018, Sensiba San Filippo joined the movement of people using the power of business as a force for good by becoming the first accounting firm in California to achieve B Corp certification. With this major achievement, SSF has demonstrated that they are meeting the highest standards for social and environmental responsibility in business and are committed to increased transparency and accountability for their company’s impacts in the future. At Sensiba San Filippo, the company’s priorities are Family, Community and Firm – in that order. I recently spoke with SSF’s managing partner, John Sensiba, about what the B Corp movement means to his business and why its social initiatives are integral to the company’s success. A company of around 200 employees, SSF is a full-service accounting firm that operates throughout the California Bay Area with offices in San Francisco, Fresno, Morgan Hill, San Mateo, San Jose and the corporate headquarters in Pleasanton. When asked about what it means for SSF to achieve B Corp certification, John replied, “It is something we're pretty proud of. It really is not an end game for us to have achieved B Corp certification, but really a beginning for us to start paying attention at a higher level with some accountability to an outside organization - to try and be the best corporate citizen we can be. We're super excited about it.” Sensiba San Filippo exists to help people. “We use our professional and personal skills to improve the lives of our families, our communities, our clients and our colleagues,” said John. “Through our service to others, our commitment to integrity, stewardship of the environment, and kindness, we intend to better the lives of those we touch directly. Indirectly, we strive to be a positive force in the global community.” Community SSF does its work to have positive impacts in the community. According to John, “SSF is there to help people. By taking away the burdens of taxes and financials, the people we work with have more time to spend in the community and with their families. This is why SSF does what they do.” In addition to this indirect benefit to the community, SSF also has major direct impacts on the community by providing many hours of pro-bono work helping important community organizations with their taxes and financial management. These community organizations supported by SSF are mainly focused on assisting the community’s underserved populations.  Employee volunteer hours in the community are all tracked. John Sensiba jokingly admits that, “It might be cliché for a CPA firm to track hours, but we have some lofty goals.” Indeed, they do. In fact, Sensiba San Filippo has a goal to contribute a half-million employee volunteer hours in the community over the next ten years. Tracking the volunteer hours is important to SSF because the actual impacts, or outputs, of the volunteer work is a bit harder to measure. “We believe that by being intentional about making the effort, supporting our people and contributing those kinds of hours in our communities, we're going to have a positive output.” Employees At SSF, 100% of the workforce is paid above a living wage. Performance feedback for employees at SSF is integral to the business and is conducted at least on an annual basis, includes peer and subordinate input, provides written guidance for career development, includes social and environmental goals and follows a 360-degree feedback process. The company also offers job flexibility to employees by allowing flex-time work schedules, meaning employees have freedom to vary their start and stop times, as well as telecommuting and job-sharing options.  Training and development are also an integral component used at SSF to help employees grow personally and professionally. “We spend a lot of money on learning and development. We have a full time learning and development director. We have class rooms, virtual classrooms and there's an opportunity to learn anything you want to learn. It doesn't all have to be directly related to our business.” SSF will pay for their employees to work towards master’s degrees and other special certifications as well. John mentions, “I think it's important for our folks to know that we'll do that and that we don't tie it to forever employment. We're not trying to handcuff them. If we don't earn their desire to be a part of the team, that's our fault. If somebody leaves us, it's because we didn't provide enough opportunity, the right training or the right mentoring or coaching.” Environment Though SSF leases all of their office space and doesn’t have 100% control of their facilities, they make an attempt wherever possible to operate in a way that has a minimal impact on the environment. They have implemented comprehensive recycling throughout their six office locations and purchase environmentally preferred products for the majority of their facilities including non-toxic janitorial products, unbleached paper products and recycled content office supplies. The Business Case At 100 employees about five years ago, SSF has seen nice growth this decade and is anticipating reaching 250 employees by the end of next year. In regard to growth and success as a company, John Sensiba mentions, “I think our impact on communities makes us attractive to potential employees, and I think it helps us retain people because our values as an organization are very similar to their values as individuals. So, it's a very positive from a business standpoint, but that's not why we do it. We do it because we feel like it's the right thing to do. Yes, making money is important, but that is not the most important thing.” Final Five Questions with John Sensiba What is one piece of advice you would give other mission driven or B Corp business leaders? “Stick with it. Don't give up if somebody makes fun of you for not being Gordon Gecko or for not being solely focused on your bottom line. Continue to do the right thing, have a long-term strategy and I think you'll be very rewarded.” What are you most excited about right now in the world of business? “The niceness. People are running businesses to help their communities to come up with really innovative ways to stop human suffering. We have a client that is so focused on addressing diseases that just aren't profitable, such as those orphan diseases that big pharma won't spend money on. I'm not blaming big pharma. I'm not trying to bash anybody here, but economically, if you've got to report to your shareholders, you don't develop a drug for a disease that doesn't have a big market. There's people doing that stuff now and finding ways to get it funded. I think, not only business, but people in general are more focused on doing good. I'm excited about that.“ How about a book recommendation, John? What is one book you would recommend business leaders or B Corp leaders read? “Well, one of my favorite books is written by Stephen M.R. Covey, that's Stephen Covey's son. It's called The Speed of Trust. Whether you're a B Corp or never will become a B Corp, I think you should read it once a year.” What are some of your favorite resources or tools that really help you in your work? “I like to read things by smart people, whether it's on the topic of the CPA profession, finance or any other topics. So I look at resources internationally. I look for people who are thinking outside themselves and beyond their own society. So, I just like to read things that expand my mind, and it's not hard to find people smarter than me and I just love reading their thoughts.” Where can people go to learn more about you and the work being done at Sensiba San Filippo? “They can find us at our website, which is ubiquitous. They can look at my personal twitter feed, which is @Sensiba. We are pretty well published on LinkedIn. We put a lot of thought pieces out there. We have other social media outlets, but if you google Sensiba you will find us.”

If you want to know how mergers and acquisitions work, you'd best ask a lawyer. Because there are legions of them involved in any M&A deal (as mergers and acquisitions are known). We hear from two lawyers with extensive experience in M&A, as well as other aspects of corporate law and equity financing, about exactly how mergers and acquisitions work.Alexandra Slack, senior legal counsel at the European Investment Fund, and her European Investment Bank colleague Tom Nguyen take us through the story of M&A from the 1980s, when the field was so wild, hostile and controversial that it prompted a best-selling book called “Barbarians at the Gate,” through to more recent moves toward a less confrontational style of merger. On the way, Tom namechecks Gordon Gecko. Of course.“From the legal perspective, a merger is when one company absorbs another and therefore becomes one entity,” says Alexandra. “In an acquisition, one company takes a majority stake in another and the two companies continue to exist.”For fans of financial definitions (and this is A Dictionary of Finance, after all), Tom and Alexandra explain various terms, including:Squeeze out, which allows an acquirer to buy the whole company, once a certain percentage of the shareholders accept its offer. This is a way of dealing with a dead register.A dead register refers to shareholders who have changed address, for example, but haven't informed the company, so they don't respond to an offer to buy their shares by another company. If there are terms or concepts you would like us to explore, give us a shout on Twitter (@EIBMatt or @AllarTankler). Or just send us a picture of you with your hair gelled like Gordon Gecko. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Move over Gordon Gecko. Your time is up! Well perhaps we aren't that close yet – but the power of AI machine learning is making its mark in the trading and investing world with artificial intelligence guided, machine market analysis. Humans are fallible. We need sleep. We need to eat. We can only process so much information at once. Every day investment professionals are examining the markets, hoping to strike when and where it is right. Now, enter, Kavout, a company using AI technology to solve a lot of these problems. Founder & CEO of Kavout, Alex Lu, believes there is huge potential for AI in finance. With their AI model, Kai, they are using deep learning and quantitative analysis to provide solutions in this arena. The computers take all fundamental data, present data and news, and analyze all the information in real time for traders. The robots recognize patterns and trends and simulate the human process. Human traders are essentially consuming and digesting information on a daily basis. They analyze and categorize it. Deep learning models can do the very same thing, minus emotion and biased opinions, not to mention, they can run in real-time 24/27. Commenting in an official corporate announcement, Kavout's CEO and co-founder Alex Lu said: “Today, Goldman Sachs has more engineers than Facebook. None of this is a coincidence. The big players know that there is much more to be gained in the markets by investing in artificial intelligence and machine learning. Our aim is to make those technologies available to all investors.” – Alex Lu (source: LinkedIn) For more information, visit: https://www.kavout.com/

A long time ago, the father of our modern America, Gordon Gecko, told us that greed was, in fact, good. Another film hero, Calogero Anello, told us a few years later that the worst thing in the world is wasted talent. This episode's pilot, Suits, takes those two formidable film fellows and ships them into each other's passionate and desperate embrace. Suits is the baby of both their loins. We produce this podcast with healthy doses of love for fans of Television, Podcasts, Actors, Acting, Netflix, Amazon Prime & Suits.

Welcome to Episode 2. In this episode, you’ll hear the story of how Lisa Steele escaped the concrete jungle surrounding Wall Street and built a lucrative brand around backyard chickens. Lisa Steele made Gordon Gecko proud, living the high-life on Wall Street during the go-go '80s. But when terrorists bombed the World Trade Center for the first time in 1993, Lisa reached her tipping point and began looking for a simpler life. It was many years later when boredom and necessity motivated her to start writing about her passion; chickens. Listen to the Podcast SUBSCRIBE TO PODCAST IN ITUNES What started as a simple Facebook page grew into a thriving blog, books and television series, all centered around Lisa's brand, Fresh Eggs Daily. A lot of people start blogs, but few turn their passion into a blogging business. Lisa Steele did just that, and now earns an income to rival what she walked away from when she left Wall Street. Lisa teaches us how giving readers what they want can earn you more than chicken feed. Episode 19 Anti-heroes week concludes! Movie day is always the best day...So many great anti-heroes in film that we couldn't possible cover them all. We want to hear from you. Agree or disagree on the examples we talk about or to let us know, 'Hey, dumbass, you forgot the best one!' Show Notes; 1- Josh is up to his old tricks again...Gordon Gecko is the character played by Michael Douglas in 'Wall Street'. And oddly enough, Gordon Gecko is also an anti-hero. 'Greed is good.' Yikes... Seth Gecko's brother in 'From Dusk Till Dawn' is Richie. How could I forget that scene where Juliette Lewis asks the Richie character to perform the holiest of tasks... 2 - Do yourself a favor and check out the Shaykcast podcast crew. Love these guys. Good call on Machete! Hear them here: https://soundcloud.com/shaykcast 3 - Thanks to Pods Unknown for the Jack Burton suggestion. How did we forget the 'ol Pork Chop Express. Thanks guys! Catch them on Twitter at PodsUnknown . Give them a shout. Tell 'em we sent you. 4 - Did you catch the reference to sending you some swag? You have to get the answer right. It's not as easy as you think.... Thanks for listening and your support. -Josh & JD

Gary Butterfield and Kole Ross capitalize on the nostalgic popularity of Duck Tales. Duck Tales is regarded as one of the best NES games, and for good reason. Scrooge’s journey from the Himalayas to Transylvania to the Moon and back to Transylvania a few more times is one of the most novel and fun platformers around. Plus, that Moon music.
