He was born in Kolkata, made his name in Mumbai and now lives in Ahmedabad. Despite being hooked to cricket, the game was converted into a passion only after he moved to Bombay. Shishit Hattangadi earned multiple accolades during his decade-long career in First Class cricket and a long stint off it. Having been Ravi Shastri's close friend, Sunil Gavaskar's opening partner and Sachin Tendulkar, Hattangadi is a 'cricket tragid' in its truest sense. Sunil Gavaskar dropped a bombshell when he wrote a column for Sportstar, hitting out at those who credited Gautam Gambhir for India's Kanpur Test win against Bangladesh. Gavaskar said the sole credit for India's aggressive approach should have gone to Rohit Sharma, the captain of the Test team. He said he felt people indulging in ‘foot-licking' by crediting the newly-appointed coach. It seems the legendary Gavaskar missed the mark on this occasion. While he stated the obvious by praising Rohit Sharma for India's fearless approach, his swipe at the head coach's supporters left a bad taste. Meanwhile, India women's cricket has been facing criticism for its slow start to the women's T20 World Cup. Some critics have accused the women's cricket team of not asking the right questions. Can India wriggle out of trouble and make it to the semi-final? It looks less likely after a timid batting performance against Pakistan. In the latest episode of the Sledging Room Podcast, Akshay Ramesh, Saurabh Kumar, and Kingshuk Kusari join the bandwagon and try to make issues out of non-issues. Tune in! "He eats Mumbai cricket, he sleeps Mumbai cricket and he breathes Mumbai cricket." The description fits Milind Rege, a stalwart! A prolific allrounder and a multiple Ranji Trophy champion. Rege recovered from a heart ailment to return to lead Mumbai. After retiring early in quest of a prospering corporate career, Rege thrived as a selector. He spotted a talent as progious as his childhood friend Sunil Gavaskar in Sachin Tendulkar and convinced his selection committee seniors to pick Tendulkar in the Ranji Trophy squad. Then on, till picking the likes of Prithvi Shaw and Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rege has played a a crucial role in Mumbai cricket's success story. In a freewheeling chat on Kattyawarchya Gappa with Amol Karhadkar, The Hindu's sports journalist, Rege narrates his terrific tale

In 2004, the Indian men's cricket team toured Pakistan after 15 years. It was a momentous tour, and Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee is said to have told Sourav Ganguly not just to win games but also win hearts. The Indian team did both. They won the test and ODI series. On their return home, some of them had to be ushered out of the airport secretly because of the teeming crowds outside. Sport and politics are closely related in the subcontinent. That tour was conducted to create a feel-good factor of sorts before the general elections. A few months before, the BJP had won state elections in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Chhattisgarh and was on a high. Prime Minister Vajpayee was the only one skeptical of the 'feel-good factor'. "Jaswant Singh looked at me and said 'there goes your campaign'." Prathap Suthan, then the National Creative Director of Grey advertising, led the campaign. He says the 'India Shining' campaign was designed for urban India and people with money to spend. It wasn't a campaign for the masses. He narrates an interesting cricket match-related incident: India was playing Australia in an ODI series, and Sehwag was going hammer and tongs. The camera turned to a person in the crowd. And what was he holding? An India Shining ad written by him. In the commentary box, Sunil Gavaskar said (paraphrasing) India is shining, alluding to the campaign slogan. It felt as if everyone in the country was caught up in the fervor. With wins in three states in the assembly elections, the party made an error. Then Deputy Prime Minister LK Advani wanted the India Shining campaign to become the election campaign. This was the beginning of the end. Jaswant Singh, then the external affairs minister, looked at Prathap and said 'there goes your campaign' because he knew it wasn't created for the masses. "It became a Frankenstein no one could control." It's hard to control a juggernaut, even if it is heading in the wrong direction. When the Deputy Prime Minister issues an order, it's hard to say no, and the India Shining campaign became the election campaign - something it wasn't intended for. Then came the Aam Aadmi campaign created by Jayshree's team at Leo Burnett which sucked the wind out of the India Shining campaign. "People were blaming me for the loss." The BJP made tactical blunders ahead of the polls, beginning with preponing them by six months. The decision to go with a campaign not created for the masses was another blunder. But it's easy to blame the person who created the campaign instead of those in power, and Prathap was at the receiving end of this. "We believed in the campaigns when working on them. Both Jayshree and Prathap said they believed in the campaigns fully when working on them. Both of them have been at the receiving end of trolls, and Prathap said he also received threats when working on the campaign. When I asked them if it is important to believe in a political party's ideology before working for them, both said it's important to see it professionally and not get emotionally caught up. Jayshree says even if the BJP had called her, she would have worked on the campaign with a full heart. Today, Prathap no longer works on political campaigns as he finds it too murky. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/pawan85/message

Kolkata became the first team to qualify for the IPL 2024 playoffs. After being a mid-table struggler in the last few seasons, KKR has been the team to beat this season. And it's no coincidence that Gautam Gambhir returned to the side as their mentor. Under Gambhir, KKR played like champions and won two titles -- in 2012 and 2014.However, a few pundits, including the legendary Sunil Gavaskar, have questioned if giving all the credit to Gautam Gambhir is fair. Ian Bishop, former West Indies pacer, made it a point to mention Shreyas Iyer's brilliant captaincy in IPL 2024. Then, there is Chandrakant Pandit, who is a domestic doyen when it comes to coaching. It is a combined effort, but there's no doubt that Gambhir's return has made it tick for the Knight Riders. Are they capable of going all the way? Do they have any chinks in their armour? If they go all the way and win their 3rd title, will they retain Shreyas Iyer for the next season? Who will be their retentions, considering they have had a strong core over the years? Will they keep faith in the likes of Andre Russell and Sunil Narine?Meanwhile, MI is out of the playoffs race. They look disoriented, and their former captain, Rohit Sharma, looks disinterested. Is it time for Rohit to leave the franchise? Will KKR be his new home in 2025?Before all that, India would want Rohit Sharma to regain form and lead well at the T20 World Cup.Join Akshay Ramesh, Alan Jose John and Kingshuk Kusari as they discuss KKR's rise and Rohit Sharma's concerning form in the latest episode of the Sledging Room Podcast.Produced & Mixed By: Kapil Dev Singh
Sunil Gavaskar shredded Virat Kohli's arguments into pieces. In one of the most straightforward pieces of television commentary, the legendary India batter lashed out at Virat Kohli, who had questioned his critics and the credibility of people who spoke about his strike rate. Kohli has often stressed the importance of not listening to outside noise, but it seems the superstar batter lets criticism affect him. In a strongly worded post-match interview midway through the IPL 2024 season, he attacked his critics and questioned people 'sitting in a box' and talking about his strike rate. Gavaskar's takedown of Kohli's comments has also exposed the toxic nature of a section of fans on social media. How can you go and question Sunil Gavaskar's credentials as a cricketer? Well, here's a simple question to all toxic fans: When did you start following the game? At the same time, another question arises: Is Gavaskar targeting only a few? Why go on a rant against Hardik Pandya and Virat Kohli? Why not talk about Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav? Meanwhile, is there any point in questioning MS Dhoni's batting position for CSK? Why is so much noise about what the former wicketkeeper, who is in the twilight of his career, is doing for the Super Kings in what probably is his last IPL season as a player? Join Akshay Ramesh, Saurabh Kumar and Kingshuk Kusari in a spicy episode of the Sledging Room Podcast. Tune in! Produced & Mixed by Kapil Dev Singh

On TSB, Neeil and Pranav look back at this week's top cricket story, with India announcing its test squad for the tour of West Indies. The selection has left many confused, including the legend Sunil Gavaskar who said: "Stop playing Ranji Trophy. Say, it's of no use, you just play IPL and think you are good enough for the red-ball game as well."On the back of Sarfaraz Khan not being picked, Gavaskar questioned the logic behind having the Ranji Trophy if performance in the country's premier domestic tournament is not looked into while picking the Indian red-ball teams instead of taking the players IPL.Khan amassed 556 runs in six games at an average of 92.66 in the 2022–23 Ranji Trophy.Further, with Pujara being dropped but Kohli and Rohit Sharma being picked, Gavaskar asked the question: “What is Indian cricket going to learn by picking the same seniors for the two Test matches who have now failed to deliver in two World Test Championship finals?" Should India have selected Sarfaraz Khan for the Test series against Australia? Despite lots of runs in the Ranji Trophy, Sarfaraz Khan continues to be out in the cold. Several former India cricketers have questioned the move and questioned the obsession with cricketers who look a particular way instead of focusing on the real hard runs scored in the middle. Sarfaraz Khan has been one of India's top batters in the country's most elite domestic tournament but he found no spots in either the series in Bangladesh or the high-profile Test series to be played at home against Australia. Sunil Gavaskar said the selectors should go to a fashion show if they want to rope in models while Venkatesh Prasad said there were other players in the side who had more kgs than Sarfaraz Khan. Meanwhile, Shubman Gill has been on fire for India scoring a record 360 runs in the ODI series against New Zealand. Rarely has an India batter started that well as such an early age. Only 23, Gill has scored hundreds including a double century from just 21 one-day internationals. Is Shubman Gill the next Virat Kohli? Saurabh Kumar and Kingshuk Kusari join Rajarshi Gupta in yet another heated, controversial debate on the Sledging Room. Tune in for the latest episode!
