Brian Murphy is based in Raleigh and his title is Sports Investigative Reporter for WRAL TV. Of late there's been a lot to investigate at North Carolina's football program as Bill Belichick operates in a shroud of secrecy so thick that his players didn't have jersey numbers during the Tar Heels' recent spring game. In addition, Belichick's 24-year-old girlfriend has taken on a strange role within the football program as she regularly scrutinizes UNC's communications staff for not doing a better job protecting the image of Belichick and those below him (including Bill's son Steve, the Tar Heels' defensive coordinator). Here is an excerpt from Murphy's coverage of a spring game that was not remotely like most spring games: No numbers on the jerseys for any player throughout spring or in Saturday's final practice. No player interviews throughout spring or after Saturday's final practice. No assistant coach interviews throughout spring or after Saturday's final practice. Belichick spoke to the media near the beginning of spring practice ... and not again. Not even at the end of Saturday's event. Didn't even pick up the microphone to thank everyone for coming out or tell them how important their presence this fall would be. Murphy, a graduate of UNC, is a former newspaper sportswriter who covered Georgia Tech during the Chan Gailey era before moving to Boise and having a front-row seat to the Broncos' incredible rise to football prominence. He was there for Boise State's unforgettable 43-42 triumph over Oklahoma in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl. Before moving back to his roots in Raleigh he lived in Washington D.C., where he covered Congress for the News & Observer of Raleigh.

“The part I also really love is finding the edges: How do we pursue the elite edge of world-class performance? I think as I've gotten further, that part is exciting me more and more as we go on here. But it doesn't have to just be world- class – how do you get people to find out how good they can really be?”When Chris Miltenberg took the helm at North Carolina in 2019, the Tar Heels distance programs had not won an ACC cross country title since before most of his current athletes were born. Fast forward to today and under Miltenberg's leadership, UNC has not only climbed back to the top of the ACC podium in cross country, indoor, and outdoor track, but they've reestablished themselves as a legitimate national contender too.Miltenberg has led UNC to top ten finishes at the NCAA cross country, indoor, and outdoor championships, he's coached Parker Wolfe to UNC's first-ever 5000m outdoor national title, signed the program's highest ranked recruiting class, and has built a culture of buy-in, belief, and bold ambition. Most recently, he's coming off an indoor season where Ethan Strand broke the collegiate records in the 3000m and mile before taking the NCAA title. Makayla Paige won the women's 800m to become the Tar Heels' first women's NCAA champion since 2018.But this isn't just a North Carolina story; Miltenberg's impact has been felt at every stop. At Stanford, he led the Cardinals to a top five program of the year finish and coached national champions like Grant Fisher, Sean McGorty, and Elise Cranny. At Georgetown, he guided the Hoyas to the 2011 NCAA Women's Cross Country title with the team that was led by Emily Infeld. In today's conversation, we talk about how he's building something sustainable in Chapel Hill, his approach to culture, and what it takes to coach through transitions, setbacks, and expectations. We also dig into athlete development, milestone moments, and why being present is one of the most underrated skills a coach can have.Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Chris Miltenberg | @chris.miltenberg on Instagram SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Big name sodas are rolling out bold new flavors in 2025, but the real buzz is happening in the prebiotic pop aisle. SATURDAY No. 5 Army (9-1, 4-1 Patriot) at Navy (7-4, 3-2), 12:30 p.m., CBS Sports Network One of the best rivalries in the sport. Army has won the last two years, but Navy won 4-of-5 prior to that. While this is one of those rivalries where record truly doesn't matter, that is not the case. We haven't talked about Navy in a while, but they're right behind Army. No. 19 Johns Hopkins (6-5, 0-3 B1G) at No. 8 Penn State (7-3, 1-2), 1 p.m., Big Ten Plus What can you say? The Jays need this. Hopkins has controlled this series, winning last year and four of the last five meetings. However, this one is at Penn State, and the Nittany Lions have won four of the last five meetings in University Park. No. 6 Maryland (8-2, 1-2 B1G) at No. 2 Ohio State (11-1, 3-0), 2 p.m., Big Ten Network Big game in Columbus. Maryland has dominated this series, 14-3, and the Terps have won six in a row and eight of the last nine. No. 7 North Carolina (8-2, 1-0 ACC) at No. 12 Duke (9-3, 0-1), 4 p.m., ACC Network Fans may remember last year when a depleted UNC shocked No. 2-ranked Duke, 15-12. The 2025 Tar Heels aren't going to sneak up on anybody. No. 4 Syracuse (9-2) vs. No. 1 Cornell (9-1), Uniondale, N.Y., 4 p.m., Corrigan Sports Network Cornell has won four of the last five, including two consecutive. The game has gone into OT each of the last two meetings, with Cornell winning 18-17 in 2OT last year, and 16-15 in 2022. We can only hope for another one as good as those. SUNDAY No. 14 Michigan (6-5, 2-1 B1G) at No. 18 Rutgers (6-6, 2-1), noon, Big Ten Network Rutgers is 10-1 all-time against Michigan, dating back to 2012. In this week's Ovie-themed Give & Go, the guys talk about Ovechkin breaking Gretzky's record and Ovie's status in the pantheon of Washington, D.C. all-time great pros. In the winter of 1973, director William Friedkin released his iconic horror classic The Exorcist, a film that has shocked and terrified audiences for more than fifty years. Based on William Peter Blatty's novel of the same name, The Exorcist tells the story of a young girl who becomes possessed by a demonic entity, and the two Catholic priests who attempt to exorcise the demon. Even more terrifying than the content of the film, however, was the fact that The Exorcist was supposedly based on a true story. William Peter Blatty had always stated The Exorcist was based on a supposedly true story he'd heard while at Georgetown University. According to Blatty, a Maryland boy, known as “Roland Doe,” had become possessed by a demonic entity and, among other things, underwent a negative personality change and began exhibiting impossible abilities including an ability to speak Latin. It was only through the dedication of one Jesuit priest that the boy was eventually freed of his possession and went on to live a normal life.Since the release of both the novel and the film in the 1970s, a great deal more has been learned about “Roland Doe” and the supposedly true story that inspired The Exorcist, raising many questions about the veracity of the original claims. Who was “Roland Doe,” and was he truly possessed by a demon, or just the intense emotions of an adolescent boy?Thank you to the Incredible Dave White of Bring Me the Axe Podcast for research and Writing support!ReferencesAllen, Thomas. 1993. North Carolina added another veteran player to their backcourt today as Colorado State guard Kyan Evans pledged to Hubert Davis from the Transfer Portal. Evans was a steady presence on the perimeter for the Rams who brings an incredible shooting acumen to Chapel Hill. While there are still spots to fill for the Tar Heels, Evans fills an obvious position and skill gap on the roster. Sherrell McMillan and Sean Moran join Joey Powell to project how Evans will impact next season. Powell joins the Tar Heels after a season on a West Virginia team that saw all sorts of turmoil, and he'll look to add athleticism and scoring to the wing in Chapel Hill.
