The Patchwork of World History in Texas High Schools (Routledge, 2022) traces the historical development of the World History course as it has been taught in high school classrooms in Texas, a populous and nationally influential state, over the last hundred years. Arguing that the course is a result of a patchwork of competing groups and ideas that have intersected over the past century, with each new framework patched over but never completely erased or replaced, the author crucially examines themes of imperialism, Eurocentrism, and nationalism in both textbooks and the curriculum more broadly. The first part of the book presents an overview of the World History course supported by numerical analysis of textbook content and public documents, while the second focuses on the depiction of non-Western peoples, and persistent narratives of Eurocentrism and nationalism. It ultimately offers that a more global, accurate, and balanced curriculum is possible, despite the tension between the ideas of professional world historians, who often de-center the nation-state in their quest for a truly global approach to the subject, and the historical core rationale of state-sponsored education in the United States: to produce loyal citizens. Offering a new, conceptual understanding of how colonial themes in World History curriculum have been dealt with in the past and are now engaged with in contemporary times, it provides essential context for scholars and educators with interests in the history of education, curriculum studies, and the teaching of World History in the United States. Texas is the largest oil-producing state in the U.S. In 2020, it pumped 1.8 million barrels out of the ground every day. That makes sense considering its rich deposits and access to the Gulf Coast. The second-largest oil-producing state surprised me the most. North Dakota fills around 431,000 barrels daily — the Bakken Formation of the Williston Basin accounts for most of these. In today's episode of The Stock Power Podcast, I share a 93-rated Power Stock that drills for oil and gas in the Williston Basin. Texas produces the most oil because of its vast size and offshore drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. But North Dakota has access to the Bakken Formation. That's 200,000 square miles of land that covers the western part of North Dakota, eastern Montana and southern Saskatchewan. The U.S. Geological Survey estimates 4.3 billion barrels of oil and 4.9 trillion cubic feet of natural gas in the Bakken Formation. This week's Power Stock is a company that drills for those products in the Bakken: · It earns a "Strong Bullish" 93 out of 100 on our Stock Power Ratings system! · The company increased quarterly sales by 100.8% in the most recent quarter. · Its stock comes with a 4.12% dividend yield. See why this leader in the oil drilling industry will continue to rise in the years to come. How could a veteran Minnesota police officer have mistaken her pistol for a Taser and fatally shot 20-year-old Daunte Wright? That, at least, is the local police chief's theory for what happened in the incident. The answer to that question may have as much to do with what was going on in Brooklyn Center police Officer Kim Potter's mind as with which weapon she was holding in her hand, experts told NBC News on Tuesday. The Glock pistol that Potter was wielding when she fired the fatal shot at Wright on Sunday as he allegedly attempted to flee is black metal and almost a pound heavier than the neon-colored plastic Taser she may have believed she was brandishing as she was caught on a video yelling, “Taser! Taser! Taser!” “A Glock is a very lightweight handgun,” said Sgt. Betsy Brantner Smith, spokeswoman for the National Police Association and a retired 29-year veteran of the Naperville Police Department in Illinois. “But a Taser is heavier than you think.” While the exact models Officer Kim Potter was carrying are not clear, the images show the general differences of these weapons, including the grips and the trigger safety that is only on a pistol. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/thes3podcast/message

In Episode 31 of the Eminent Domain Podcast, we discuss the Texas High Speed Rail. Joining the podcast is Patrick McShan, Special Counsel to Texans Against High Speed Rail. As discussed in the podcast, there have been some court hearings regarding whether the High Speed Rail developer has the right to come on to private property to do survey work and whether the developer is even a railroad under Texas law. Patrick brings us up to speed on those cases. We also discuss the proposed project's financial feasibility, administrative history, and potential future moves in the Texas Legislature.
