The Man from Toronto is a 2022 American action comedy film directed by Patrick Hughes. It stars Kevin Hart and Woody Harrelson, along with Kaley Cuoco, Jasmine Mathews, Lela Loren, Pierson Fodé, Jencarlos Canela, and Ellen Barkin in supporting roles. The Man from Toronto was released on June 24, 2022 by NetflixEddy (Hart) is a failed internet athletic instructor attempted to sell his idea of non-contact boxing to local gym owner Marty (Roach), but Marty rejects the idea on the basis that it's nonsensical and Teddy's failure to do something as simple as design a marketing brochure proves he's incompetent.Wanting to do something for his wife Lori's (Mathews) birthday, he takes her away to a day spa where he has arranged for a luxurious two hour pampering session. Meanwhile Teddy goes off to a secluded cabin to prepare for the rest of her surprise, however the printer he used to print directions had low toner and the number on the cabin's address was too faded for him to see clearly. Teddy unknowingly arrives at the wrong location where two men are inside with a third man awaiting the arrival of The Man From Toronto (Harrelson), a mysterious assassin with a talent for brutal interrogation. Having never met the Man From Toronto, the men mistake Teddy for him and proceed to encourage his interrogation of the man they have in captivity. Despite his fear and cluelessness, Teddy manages to extract the information they're looking for out of the man, shortly after which the FBI raid the cabin.Explaining the situation to Teddy, Agents Lawrence (Drummond) and Davis (Rowe) convince him to assume the identity of the Man from Toronto due to the time sensitive nature of an operation they have underway to catch exiled Venezuelan Colonel Marin (Hoyos) in Washington, DC before he follows through with a plan to assassinate the President of Venezuela at the new Venezuelan embassy. While Teddy's helping the FBI they assign Agent Santoro (Canela) to protect Lori and act as a butler to guide her on a day of shopping and fun with her friend Anne (Cuoco). Much to Teddy's jealousy.Teddy is sent to meet the Colonel's wife Daniela (Loren) as The Man from Toronto. She tells him that they've succeeded with “phase one” of their plan, so he must go to Puerto Rico for “phase two.” En route to Puerto Rico, Teddy and four of Marin's men are ambushed by The Man From Toronto, who's real name is Randy, on the plane, who kills everyone but Teddy and crash lands the plane and on a rural part of the island. The duo proceeds to San Juan where a technology conference is underway. After speaking with his Handler (Barkin), Randy decides to continue with the ruse that Teddy is him, and outfits him in a suit and collection of knives since that is Randy's chosen method of interrogation.Arriving at the location of the tech conference, Teddy meets with a man who informs him he has four men hostage and is trying to determine which one is “Green.” Randy guides Teddy through most of the process until Teddy inadvertently slices one of the hostages cheek and the blood induces Teddy to vomit all over him and another man, the second of whom admits he's Green. Randy arrives and kills everyone in the room except Teddy and Green, who explains that he and the man Teddy extracted information from in the cabin had designed a weapon that Colonel Marin wants, but it has a dual failsafe: the former man's voice, and Green's thumbprint. Randy cuts Green's thumb off and presumably kills him, only for him and Teddy to be confronted by another asset known as The Man From Miami (Fode). He tries to steal the thumb from them and a shootout ensues, though they manage to keep the thumb. They return to the United States where they meet Lori and Anne for dinner. Randy reveals that as a loner he's very uncomfortable around women and is nervous that Anne is joining them. Anne manages to break through his exterior and the two dance briefly before the Man From Miami arrives and chases Randy and Teddy to an upstairs storage room at the restaurant. The three fight, ending with Teddy accidentally shooting Randy in the leg and The Man From Miami making off with the thumb. This confirming Randy's suspicions that the Handler had sent The Man From Miami. The police and FBI arrive on the scene so Randy and Teddy steal a police car to escape and race to the embassy to try and prevent the assassination. Arriving in time, Teddy distracts Colonel Marin and the Handler long enough for the FBI to raid the building and thwart the assassination. However, Randy escapes with the money that was owed by the Colonel.Teddy arrives to an empty home, Lori having left out of disappointment to catch a train and stay with her mother. Teddy rushes to stop her from leaving, but is ambushed by The Man From Miami, who almost succeeds in killing him until Randy intervenes. However, several more assassins show up and Randy and Teddy are forced to fight them off. As they finish off the last of them the Handler herself arrives and attempts to kill them both to get her money back. She pursues them into a warehouse where Teddy accidentally activates a trap door that drops her into boiling oil, frying her alive, and the warehouse explodes from a gas leak ejecting Randy and Teddy into the parking lot.Thinking Randy had left, Teddy is confronted by one last assassin: the Man From Tokyo, however Randy dispatches him with his prized possession: a 1969 Dodge Charger he named Deborah. He hands the keys to Teddy so he can catch Lori at the station before she boards her train, but warns him not to scratch the car. En route to the station the car stalls on the train tracks so Teddy bails on foot and arrives in time to stop Lori. However, her train arrives and destroys Deborah, sending the $2 million in cash that Randy stashed in the trunk flying everywhere.A year later, Teddy, Lori, and Anne are dining at Randy's new restaurant, something Randy had confessed was a dream of his for a long time but he hadn't opened one because he was afraid nobody would come. The three quietly admit they don't like the food but decide to support Randy anyway until the overpriced bill comes, which Randy offers to cover. Teddy then takes Randy aside and lets him know he's made Randy a partner in his new line of gyms, and hands him a small downpayment to cover the cost of losing Deborah, though Randy demands full repayment and starts to choke Teddy for not fixing what he did.★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★
