This episode of the Geektown Behind The Scenes podcast takes us into the world of Apple TV+'s Emmy-nominated comedy 'The Studio', with supervising sound editor and sound designer George Haddad.Created by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg, The Studio has quickly become one of Apple's biggest comedy hits, renewed for a second season and breaking records with 23 Emmy nominations, the most ever for a freshman comedy. The series stars Rogen as Matt Remick, the panicked new boss of Continental Studios, alongside Catherine O'Hara, Kathryn Hahn, Ike Barinholtz, and Chase Sui Wonders, with cameos from some of Hollywood's biggest names.George discusses how his love of sound began with Star Wars, what it takes to wrangle the wall-to-wall dialogue of The Studio, and how comedy demands a very different sound approach compared to drama. He also shares stories from sneaking around Warner Bros. with a microphone, the Golden Globes episode, and his past work on shows like Gotham and Taylor Sheridan's Landman.Time Stamps (approx.):00:00 – Intro & George's path into sound via Star Wars05:30 – Joining The Studio and the early conversations with Seth & Evan's team09:00 – The challenges of long one-shot episodes and heavy improvisation13:00 – Comedy sound design vs drama, and protecting the punchline17:00 – The Golden Globes episode and recreating award show ambience21:00 – Sneaking onto the Warner Bros. lot for authentic ambience24:00 – Comparing The Studio with Gotham and superhero soundscapes26:00 – Working on Taylor Sheridan's Landman28:00 – George's current watchlist and dream projectsIf you enjoyed this episode, make sure you subscribe to Geektown Radio on your podcast app of choice. The Late Show on CBS will come to an end next year after a 33-year run. The news came just days after the TV host referred to a $16m settlement between Trump and CBS parent company Paramount over an interview on their network as a “big fat bribe”. CBS has described the show's cancellation as “purely financial”. But, as the Guardian's Washington DC bureau chief David Smith tells Reged Ahmad, others are not so sure. Carol Leifer entered comedy when a woman stand-up was considered a novelty or a niche, but even then she knew "things would eventually change." And change has come, due in no small part to Carol's own stelar show biz contributions. Carol joins us this week to talk about her formative years, her early standup, giving voice to iconic characters like Elaine Benes and Deborah Vance, and her new book, How to Write a Funny Speech!Carol's relationship with her father, an optometrist with an ear for comedy and a quick wit that delighted both patients and family, laid the foundation for her career trajectory. Her supportive parents encouraged her to pursue stand-up when the opportunity struck, and very soon, she was right at home at The Improv and on The Tonight Show.Even within the male-dominated comedy space, Carol found herself buoyed by peers and colleagues, in the clubs and on the sets of seminal sitcoms such as Seinfeld, The Larry Sanders Show and Curb Your Enthusiasm.Carol's Seinfeld contributions tapped into women's lived experiences and brought us the skinny mirror, the marble rye and the nail salon, but she reveals which of Elaine's iconic storylines was not her brainchild - 'sponge-worthy' was actually coined by male writer, Peter Mehlman!Enjoy an exciting spin on your favorite podcast showbiz trivia game as we invite Carol to play IMDB Roulette: Writer's Edition, where she dives into the intricacies of writing for: Seinfeld, Curb, Hacks, SNL and Ellen, plus traveling the globe with Henry Winkler, George Foreman, Terry Bradshaw and William Shatner! (She now calls him Bill.)Carol also shares her SNL writing regrets. (If she could only have gotten in better with Lorne.) We talk about her latest runaway hit book How To Write a Funny Speech and close the show with Fritz's favorite new Carol Leifer joke!In recommendations -- Weezy: The HBO original, My Mom Jayne: A Film By Mariska HargitayFritz: Netflix documentary, Trainwreck: The Cult Of American ApparelCarol LeiferHow To Write A Funny Speech: for a Wedding, Bar Mitzvah, Graduation & Every Other Event You Didn't Want to Go to in the First Place by Carol Leifer and Rick MitchellCarol Leifer on WikiCarol Leifer on InstagramCarol Leifer on FacebookCarol Leifer Amazon Author PageMy Mom Jayne from Mariska HargitayTrainwreck: The Cult Of American ApparelMedia Path PodcastMedia Path on Buy Me a Coffee

Send us a textEvery TV Sitcom yo've ever loved has been touched by this man's genius! What does it take to shepherding some of the most beloved British comedy shows from idea to cultural phenomenon? Jon Plowman OBE—the executive producer behind The Office, Absolutely Fabulous, Vicar of Dibley, Inside No. 9, and countless other comedy classics—offers a rare glimpse into the creative chaos that birthed these iconic programs. From surviving a motorcycle accident that landed him in the hospital (with a parade of celebrities visiting his bedside) to the surreal experience of being interviewed for Oxford University by candlelight during a power outage, Plowman's journey through British television is as unexpected as it is enlightening. His revelation about arriving at a meeting with French and Saunders three weeks before filming to find their "script" consisted of merely four Post-it notes on a wall surrounded by celebrity magazines speaks volumes about the creative genius he helped nurture throughout his career. The most valuable lesson from Plowman's storied career might be his philosophy of "never shouting cut"—allowing the moments between scripted lines and official filming to capture spontaneous comedy gold. This approach led to some of the most memorable moments in shows like Absolutely Fabulous, where improvisation flourished in the spaces between what was written and what naturally emerged on set.Beyond the humorous anecdotes—including the delightfully absurd story of settling a dispute between David Walliams and Matt Lucas about the appropriate size of a certain stain on a jacket lapel during a Little Britain sketch—lies Plowman's profound insight into recognizing and cultivating comedy genius. Whether championing Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant's revolutionary mockumentary format for The Office or supporting Reece Shearsmith and Steve Pemberton's anthology vision for Inside No. 9 against network pressures, Plowman's instinct for spotting innovation has shaped decades of entertainment.Ready to discover how the most iconic British comedy shows made it from concept to screen? Across the noughties, Dave took the British comedy scene by storm, and is known for taking the mundane, adding some sparkle and creating an Edinburgh festival fringe show, a UK tour and a book. "So we go into NBC, we tell them we've got an idea for a show about nothing." "Exactly" "They say what's your show about? I say nothing." "There you go" "I think you may have something here..." This is the conversation that takes place between Jerry and George in a Seinfeld episode from season 4 called "The Pitch." It was the fictionalized version of the real process that led Jerry Seinfeld and Larry David to create one of the biggest and most successful shows in television history. Today we travel back to 1988 to witness the origins, creation, and everything that went into the launch of the very first episode of Seinfeld, a pilot dubbed "The Seinfeld Chronicles" that first aired on July 5th, 1989. It was a pilot that seemed dead in the water as the network, test audiences, and even some of the cast didn't think it had a chance of success. But little did everyone know what this tiny show about nothing would eventually become... The Everything 80s Movie Review Podcast: Patreon.com/80s

A well-regarded producer of television specials and variety shows, George Schlatter, in 1967 pitched to NBC an idea that was a radical departure: a comedy special inspired by the hippie counter-culture, one which would take the idea of sit-ins, love-ins, and be-ins, and manifest that politicized, sexualized, consciousness-raising energy into comedic sketches. The special, Laugh-in, was so successful it became a regular television series, running from January 1968 to March 1973 and eventually becoming the #1 show on TV. George is the author of the new book Still Laughing: A Life in Comedy featuring never-before-told backstories from the creation of one of the most beloved shows in television history. It also recounts the coming-of-age of one of television's great producers, from his early nightclub days in Vegas, rubbing elbows with iconic mob figures like Mickey Cohen and John Stompanato, to his influential friendships with Judy Garland and Frank Sinatra, for whom George was asked to deliver a eulogy at his funeral.

Jonny Sweet won the 'Best Newcomer' Prize at the 2009 Edinburgh Festival Fringe, created a sketch group with 'The Inbetweeners' Simon Bird and Joe Thomas, and appeared in many TV Comedies, including 'Chickens' and 'Him and Her'. He wrote the movie 'Wicked Little Letters' starring Olivia Colman, which was released this year. He has also just published one of the most acclaimed novels of the year. 'The Kellerby Code' tells the story of Edward, living in a world he can't afford and to which he doesn't belong. Getting by doing odd jobs for friends, he falls in love with one of them, and after a little act of kindness in the group takes a sinister turn, it unleashes the unspeakable brutality at Edward's core.We talk about why he's been lying to people about the plot, and how the writing process changes depending on what he's working on. You can hear how much he thinks like a director when writing, and why he prefers not to hear himself think. This novel has been highly recommended by some of the best authors around, and we discuss how he deals with such praise. You can support the show at patreon.com/writersroutine@writerspodwritersroutine.com Hosted on Acast. Charles and Logan dive into Seth MacFarlane's grimy quasi-sitcom ‘Ted,' which acts as a prequel to the 2012 movie ‘Ted' and 2015 sequel ‘Ted 2.' Is comedy dead? Can ‘Ted' fix it? Is this show even watchable without the devil's lettuce? After discussing these pressing questions, they talk about the other trashy shows they've guiltily (or not) partaken in recently.
