Episode in a Tweet: Be your own Chief Troublemaker; don't be afraid to break some rules, create boundaries, push boundaries, and create more inclusive and equitable companies. Quick Background: I met Shelly through her son, Jake Fleshner, the executive producer for all of David Meltzer's programming. He prepped me for going on Meltzer's show “Office Hours” and introduced me to Shelley. Shelley and I hit it off instantly, and I was intrigued by her work at The Female Quotient (FQ). During the interview, Shelley shares the story of how the Female Quotient came to be, and we discuss why we need to break certain rules and shake things up—describing why she calls herself the Chief Troublemaker. I love that she unapologetically herself and pushes boundaries to create a life she loves and a company helping other women do the same. I appreciate Shelley's insight on the need to use new language to shape the way we think about the workplace, and others agree. FQ is becoming the expert on what women want in the workplace, being sought out by Fortune 500 companies looking to attract and retain talent, especially female talent. Shelley has so much fun sharing her insight into what women want and what leaders need to do to rethink how we work. Today’s show might be exactly what you need. You’re in for the inspiring story of a woman who defied the odds and never gave up on her dream. She’s got gold nuggets of wisdom about believing in yourself and becoming your biggest advocate. Join us! Kate Garnes is a motivational speaker, choreographer, actor, and podcaster.  She travels the country to speak, especially to teenagers. Kate uses her story of being told she was never good enough to go on to become a performer at Walt Disney World. She’s gone on to become a gladiator, not because anyone saved her, but because she learned how to save herself. Kate is the author of Mixtape: How to Stop Listening to the Recordings of Your Past.  Big dreams  Have you dared to dream “big dreams”? From the time she was very young, Kate’s dreams and plans were to be a singer. She planned every step in her life around that dream but overhearing a chance conversation between her parents one day sent her the clear message that she wasn’t good enough. Through high school and college, Kate dabbled in various endeavors because she wasn’t sure what to do with her life. She soon auditioned at Walt Disney World and became a character performer for ten years. At age 28, her dream shifted to becoming a motivational speaker, which is what she does today. It’s a career that she loves and one that fulfills her in ways she could have never imagined. Today, Kate instructs teens on how to be their own biggest advocate and not their biggest critic in dreaming big and fighting to make those dreams come true.  TWEET: Be your own biggest advocate in dreaming big to make your dreams come true. @kategarneslive #chasingdreams Believing the lie Do you worry about what other people think about you? Most of us spend way too much time caring about what others think of us and our dreams. Part of the problem in believing in ourselves and chasing our dreams is that we believe the lie that everyone else knows more than we do. It’s the reason we let their words have such a strong influence over us. The truth is that other people don’t notice or think about us nearly as much as we think they do. Why do we give other people such power over us? Kate says we let their words determine our value and squelch our dreams. Why? TWEET: Stop giving other people power over you. @kategarneslive #chasingdreams Detox your life Does your life need a detox? Think about the podcasts, TV shows, movies, and friends that you have in your life. It’s an important principle that we will live out what we are consuming. An important step in chasing your dreams and realizing your worth is to detox your life from things you need to leave behind. There are movies and TV shows that you need to leave behind. There are friends who are full of negativity and criticism that we need to leave behind. Detoxing your life of negativity will leave more room for positive energy. Kate explains why we all need friends who are willing to “get in the mud” with us.  TWEET: Detox your life from things you need to leave behind. @kategarneslive #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”Start asking questions. No one has a perfect life. We each have negative experiences from our past that have helped shape the person we are today. There is a difference, however, in how we respond to those tough challenges. Some people allow those circumstances to define them, and they can never seem to move past them. Others are able to change their perspective and use difficulties to strengthen them and propel them into the future. I’ll let you guess which category best describes today’s guest.  As a teenager, Michael Arterberry was fortunate to receive guidance from positive adult role models who helped him overcome adversities and set high expectations for his future. Grateful for the role these mentors played in his own development, Michael decided to dedicate his professional life to helping people navigate the difficulties of life and launch their future into motion. For more than 25 years, he has been helping teens and adults use what they have gone through as a catalyst for success rather than an obstacle for failure. Michael is the author of Be Encouraged: 250 Days of Motivation and Encouragement, a daily motivational book. Additional information about his struggles as a child and a debilitating spinal cord injury as an adult can be found in his wife's book, God Was Holding My Hand. **Please be advised that a brief sexual assault/molestation reference occurs in this episode. If you are triggered by this, please check for details about skipping over it as you listen.  A positive mindset Is it possible to overcome extreme difficulties and develop a positive mindset? The answer is YES! Despite a horrific childhood, Michael was determined to create a positive mindset. A big part of that was his relationship with God, and in addition, athletic endeavors became his respite. He didn’t think of playing sports as “therapy” at the time, but that’s what took place as he reflects on his years in school. He played basketball, baseball, football, and soccer, and he was able to channel all of his energy from his family challenges to “play like a wild man.” Having a healthy outlet for his frustrations helped fuel his positive mindset, along with his determination and resilience. TWEET: Having a healthy outlet for frustration helps fuel a positive mindset. #chasingdreams Getting results How does Michael’s youth program produce the desired results? As he goes into schools around the country, his two-day program helps young people recognize the land mines in their stories and the damage they didn’t even know they had sustained. He teaches them to revisit those painful places but know that they can’t stay there if they want to move forward. Michael shares examples of kids who were wounded deeply; some go on to have miraculous healing journeys, and some choose to go in other tragic directions. Besides his youth program, Michael created his book of motivation and encouragement to help even more people. TWEET: You can’t stay in the painful places if you want to move forward. #chasingdreams Feeling lost Where do you turn when you feel lost? Michael likens feeling “lost” in life to going through a shipwreck and finding the broken pieces that are left---and holding onto them. He says to take those broken pieces and change your perspective. He warns us to be careful to not “drown in the shallow water,” but to stand up and walk on. The only constant in life is change, so look at 2020’s challenges as a time in which we’ve all felt lost in some way. Again, change your perspective and move forward.  TWEET: Be careful not to drown in the shallow water. #chasingdreams Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take--”Narrow down your dream to what will make you happy, not what will give you the biggest paycheck.” OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [2:01] What young Michael wanted to be [11:31] How Michael developed a positive mindset [14:40] How Michael started his non-profit [18:40] The results of Michael’s program  [24:36] Why Michael wrote his book [29:41] The importance of self-reflection [33:07] When you’re feeling lost [39:08] The value of listening [41:28] Why we need to live conscious lives [46:41] How you can “check-in” on others [47:44] ONE action for a dream chaser RESOURCES MENTIONED: Michael’s Facebook Michael’s LinkedIn Michael’s Website Shake the Dirt Experience Youth Voices Center Inc. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays! I’m excited about 2020, and I have confidence and good feelings that it will be the Year of Awesome for me---and I hope for you, too! In today’s solo episode by me, I’m sharing Ten Lessons I’ve learned from my past. I hope you’ll listen and take action as we count them down from ten.  10. You can’t do it alone. You need a coach or mentor or someone to help you. I share personal experiences I’ve had with taking online courses, of which some are great, and some, not so much. The ones that include a coaching component are the most helpful. Find someone who will coach and guide you on your journey. TWEET: Find someone to guide you on your journey. #chasingdreams 9. It’s the journey, not the goal. Work toward your dreams, even if you don’t achieve them. The journey to the goal should be joyful and invigorating. Enjoy the journey with all the highs, the lows, and each experience of your adventure. TWEET: Enjoy the journey! #chasingdreams 8. Allow yourself the grace to make mistakes and keep moving. We are our worst critics and worst enemies. We hold ourselves back because we don’t allow our mistakes to happen, and we don’t offer ourselves forgiveness. We feel like we have to punish ourselves for our mistakes. Don’t let your mistake last longer than it needs to. TWEET: Allow yourself the grace to make mistakes. #chasingdreams 7. Find opportunities for yourself along the way. Humble yourself and find the power and value of volunteering or being an intern. Take a chance. You never know what will happen in your story. Don’t stay in the box. Get a shovel and make your own path. Listen to the inspiring story of my podcast producer, Ruth, in Kenya. TWEET: Be humble. #chasingdreams 6. Embrace your fears. This is my new motto for 2020. Fear is what holds most people back from chasing their dreams. What are you afraid of? Make a list. Do your research and figure out how to overcome those fears. If you don’t know how, please message me and let me help. TWEET: Embrace your fears and overcome them.  #chasingdreams 5. Be happy. Life is too short for anything else! You can’t be happy 24/7, but there can be more ups than downs. Spend time with your loved ones. Go on adventures. Do what makes YOU happy, not what makes other people happy. TWEET: Do what makes YOU happy. #chasingdreams 4. What are you waiting for? Don’t follow society’s rules for what everyone else thinks you should do. Don’t let anyone tell you what the deadline is for marriage, having kids, a certain job, or a vacation. Don’t wait! You never know what life will throw at you. TWEET: Don’t wait. #chasingdreams 3. Take care of your mental health. I found myself anxious, stressed, and depressed after a car accident earlier this year. I saw a therapist who helped me talk through what I was feeling and why. It is vitally important to advocate for your mental health. TWEET: Be your own mental health advocate. #chasingdreams 2. Make your own choices. This has been a struggle for me, and it’s a lesson that took a while for me to learn. This is YOUR life, so don’t let other people pressure you to make certain choices. I was 28 years old when I made the first decision for myself about my education and my career. TWEET: This is YOUR life. #chasingdreams 1. Do random acts of kindness. Look for ways to do things that make other people happy without looking for recognition. There is great power in living this way. TWEET: Do random acts of kindness. #chasingdreams 0. My theme for 2020: I am enough. There are things I want to do to improve myself, but I am enough right now.  TWEET: I am enough. #chasingdreams OUTLINE OF THE EPISODE: [2:25] Ten Lessons [4:03] You can’t do it alone [10:07] It’s the journey, not the goal [14:26] Allow your mistakes and keep moving [16:28] Find opportunities along the way [22:15] Embrace your fears [26:08] Be happy [27:40] What are you waiting for? When you interact with your prospects, your goal should be to provide such great value that you leave people better off whether they buy from you or not. We've been talking about value all month, and today hypnotist Jason Linett talks about how people can change their thinking to grow their business. Growth isn't just about your platform but it's largely about how you tell the story to your audience. We often miss the power of a story and its impact on our potential customers. Help prospects win In almost every category, there are others out there who do the same work you do. Storytelling is the one thing that truly sets you apart from the competition so that you're no longer just a commodity. Your customers can go find another business coach or web designer, and even another hypnotist. Jason points out that he didn't get married by approaching a pretty girl at school and announcing that they were going to have children together. Instead, they built a relationship through the natural progression that occurs when people get to know each other. Look at the relationship building aspect of it. You know that you want to help people, so look for something that will help the customer. Find things you can set in motion that will help your prospects win. Suddenly, there's a collection of people out there who didn't need your entire service but they are in the raving fan category. Some of those that you helped will move forward in the funnel in order to see how you can help them even more. Ditching fear Most people don't seize this concept because they fear giving away too much. They believe that if they give away too much, people won't buy from them. Jason said that he has given away more than most people in his industry. He has also earned more than most of the people in his industry. He believes the two naturally go together. Think of it as a difference of show versus tell. I can tell you what methods may be helpful and you can research them and dig into them in order to determine whether they might truly work, or I can get together with you and actually help you do it. [Tweet "Be willing to give away your best content to your customers sometimes. Give away an abridged version that helps them along on the journey and prompts them to consider what more you might have to offer. #BuildValue"] Many people want to try an at-home version before they commit to the live "being in the room" version. Convince people to care How do we get people to care before we ever really ask them to listen? We need to think differently. It's about listening to the audience and responding to their requests. Jason calls hit pitch "The Hollywood Effect." It's based on the tendency of movies to launch you directly into some piece of the action, get you swept up into it, and then rewind to tell you the back-story. He launches into a story about murder, and about a new mother who moved into a hotel after seeing a bug in her home. By the end of her first meeting with him, she killed a housefly with her bare hand. Draw in the entire room. Get them to put down their food and listen to what you have to say. Value-first mindset Do the opposite of what everyone else is doing. If everyone else is doing things one way, let that be your cue to do it differently. As you decide how to move forward, pick the option you are most comfortable with. That's your first entry point and you should flesh that out completely and make it exactly what you want it to be. Once that piece has become a machine that's running itself, you can branch off to some other thing. Finding the time Jason suggests that there's no such thing as "finding the time." It's a game we invented to trick ourselves into not doing things we're absolutely capable of. Instead, we should use the mechanism of making time. Consider putting everything on a scheduling platform. Make use of color-coding. Choose one color for the events that cannot be changed. The number one tip is to listen. So often we catch ourselves trying to mind-read our audience instead of starting with the ask and discovering the customer's greatest need. Sometimes what they want is different than what they need. You're selling what they want, so you'll deliver what they want, but along the way, you can overdeliver by providing what they need. TSE 1076: Holding Prescriptive Conversations With Buyers

The Sales Evangelist

Play Episode Listen Later Apr 19, 2019 32:53

Sellers can guide prospective customers through the purchasing journey by holding prescriptive conversations with buyers.  Tom Pisello launched into the topic of prescriptives because he was a product manager who was launching products in the marketplace, with a sales force that had never engaged these particular customers. In an attempt to help buyers make decisions, he created prescriptive tools that would help customers analyze their existing situation and compare it to the new product. Buyer frustration The B2B purchase decision is more challenging than ever for buyers because there are six to 10 decision makers in every decision. Buyers spend incredible amounts of time on their own gathering, processing, and deconflicting information. And 94 percent of buyers have participated in a buying cycle that just evaporated. Buyers are frustrated. About 84 percent report that the buyers' journey is taking longer than they expected. There's a big opportunity for sellers as well as a challenge for them to overcome: to help buyers through a journey that has become much tougher and longer than ever before. The problem is that most sellers show up to meetings talking about themselves: about the company, the product, the services, themselves, and the customers they are working with. Then when the competition shows up for their meeting, they do the same thing. They all sound exactly the same, so the buying process becomes a shootout. Flip it around Instead of talking about the typical things, talk about the challenges the prospect might be having. Then, use that to do some teaching about the challenges you're seeing at other companies. Then, pivot to a Socratic approach. Ask probing, diagnosing questions to identify whether your prospects see themselves in the other customers you described. Do a little bit of cooperative discovery. If you sell office furniture, start by sharing current research about what makes a good office setup. Is open office the way to go? What about standup desks? Instead of pitching yourself or your product, share information about productive office environments. Talk about the challenges of collaboration and flexible work environments. Mention health and engagement. Talk provocatively about these challenges and how they affect your prospect. The book The Challenger Sale by Matthew Dixon and Brent Adamson tackles this approach well. Share examples This leads naturally into you sharing stories and examples about how you've helped other customers with their office furniture needs and about how successful they've been as a result. From there you'll use the Socratic method to dig deep. Be careful how much of a challenge you present early on because it's possible that you haven't earned the right to do that. Start with something provocative, but then pivot away from the research to your questions. The goal is to move into a collaboration with the customer. Guide the customer Buyers prefer this process because you're solving a problem and uncovering problems they didn't even realize they had. But even for issues they knew they had, you're putting some numbers to them. You're clarifying how their employees will be impacted by the purchase of office furniture. That's why pivoting from research to personal is important. You're putting it into a perspective your customer can understand and telling the customer exactly what the problem is costing and how you can help solve it. You're helping them to prioritize all of these challenges and becoming a prescriptive consultant to them. As a seller, it's your moral obligation to act as a guide to the customer. Because the buyer's journey has gotten complicated, you need to provide a map of sorts so the customer knows what to expect. Then be prepared to proactively provide information to the buyer along the way. If you know the company will ask for a business case, proactively provide it. Don't wait for the customer to ask. [Tweet "Be an evolved seller who is ready for requests that occur during the buyer's journey. Inspire the customer to buy and then provide the right content at the right time. #EvolvedSeller"] Proactive sellers The buyer's journey is hard. As you're proactively providing content, you can also use smart sales enablement systems to track whether the content is being consumed. If they aren't consuming the information, they may not be as far along in the process as you think they are. You've got to anticipate every step so that you'll have the visibility to know whether you're progressing or not. Bring up your buyer's objections before they become objections. Realize that your prospects spend two-thirds of their time gathering, processing, and deep conflicting. Streamline that for them when you can. Inspiring content Marketing plays a vital role in putting together inspirational content. We must identify the content that will inspire our customers. We're not talking about content that is only about the products or services. It must be shorter, based on the challenges they are facing. Then we need to enable sales to use the Socratic questioning. Look back to your last presentation to determine whether you led with information about the product or service or whether you addressed challenges. What were your New Year’s resolutions? Have you kept them? It’s easy to make resolutions, but without a plan, you won’t make it out of January. Perhaps you’ve already failed your resolution, and that’s OK! It’s OK if you’ve given up; just try again with a different mindset in place. Let’s talk about three practices to take with you into 2019. Change your perspective/change your life Are you a negative person by nature? If you are, then try being a “glass half-full” person. Don’t let your gut reaction be negative. Think about the positives and be grateful---even for the smallest and simplest things. Be grateful for the mistakes and failures you encounter, because those are the things that teach us to do better! TWEET: Be grateful for the mistakes and failures you encounter, because those are the things that teach us to do better! #chasingdreams Embrace your fears What are your biggest fears, and how do they hold you back? I’m setting some personal goals to face and embrace two of my biggest fears this year. For me, a big fear is being in front of a video camera, so I’m doing a 31-day video challenge in which I’m sharing 31 lessons that I’ve learned and want to give back. Check out my one minute videos at #31vidchallenge! I’m finding that being the face in front of the camera is very different than being the voice behind the mic! I’m also embracing my fear of heights this year, in very specific and terrifying ways. Imagine what’s possible if you don’t let fear stop your progress! TWEET:  Imagine what’s possible if you don’t let fear stop your progress! #chasingdreams Don’t chase the money Do you know WHY you’re doing what you’re doing? You don’t if you’re chasing the money. Your WHY is the most important thing---not the money. Some people live their best life on a $12K salary, and some live their worst life on a six-figure salary. Chase your WHY and figure out your happy place. You have to be happy for YOU---not for others. You are enough! Who are your friends that you hang out with the most? What are they like? Do they help you in your dream chase? Today’s solo episode is designed to make you think about these questions and more. Are YOU the kind of friend who is supportive to others who are chasing their dreams? Jim Rohn famously said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” It’s true! Think about your circle of friends and how they affect you--and let’s talk about it.   Relationships will change over time Who are your “five friends”? Relationships will ebb and flow in the changing seasons of life. Dynamics change about the people you once held dear---and they might not be as close as they once were. One thing that doesn’t change, though, is the way our friends affect us. We need different types of personalities with different strengths and weaknesses in our circle, and we tend to group them according to specific similarities or where we met them. TWEET: Jim Rohn famously said, “You are the average of the five people you spend the most time with.” How does your circle measure up? #chasingdreams   The friends you need Do your friends support you? They may not always know what’s going on or what your difficulties are, but you want them to have your back and be the person you can call at 3 am. You don’t want people around you who are always YES people, but you don’t want those around you to always be negative either. If you’ve ever spent any amount of time with a complaining, negative person, then you know they will wear you down and depress you. Who wants to be around that person all day? TWEET: You don’t want people around you who are always YES people, but you don’t want those around you to always be negative either. Choose wisely. #chasingdreams   A two-way friendship Do you surround yourself with people whom you can support? Friendships and relationships go both ways. Be careful not to suck up someone’s support without giving it back to them. Watch out for those who take, take, take! Surround yourself with givers, and not just takers. Look for friends you can count on and those who have ambition to be good leaders and be their best selves.  TWEET: Be careful not to suck up someone’s support without giving it back to them. #chasingdreams   OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [1:48] Who are you hanging with? How have your dreams played into what you have accomplished in life? For some people, their dreams remain unchanged over the years, and others see their dreams take detours and U-turns as life progresses. In celebration of our 150th episode, I’ve invited some of my beloved family members to join us for a chat about their lives and how they’ve chased their dreams.   I want you to meet my sister Jamie Joshua, my sister Gina Wright, and my brother-in-law Josh Wright. I’ve assembled them from across the globe for this virtual chat in which there is no script and there are no prepared questions. Let’s have fun getting to know them and putting them on the spot as only a sister can do.   We start by getting their take on the world of podcasting and some of their favorites that they listen to regularly. I’m even sharing some of my newfound faves, so listen closely for one or two that you might want to catch also.   How their dreams have played out in life   A common thread among my siblings is the desire to help people and make an impact. You hear that passion as they share their occupations and if that career has truly been the one of their dreams. Jamie is Director of Diversity Inclusion at the Samuel Curtis Johnson Graduate School of Management at Cornell University. It’s not something she imagined herself doing in her former life as an attorney, but it allows her to help people and make a deeper impact. She says it’s fun to work with a variety of people who have the passion to be change agents in the world. Josh is a dentist at Cornerstone Dental, as is his wife, Gina. Josh started the practice with his brother, and their goal has always been to elevate dental care into a less fearful experience. He has wanted to be a dentist since 8th grade, and even though there have been detours along the way, he has kept his constant vision. He loves establishing relationships with his patients and not just running them in and out of the chair. Gina always wanted to be a doctor, but ended up a dentist. She likes the hands-on approach of dentistry and finds great pleasure in helping people with their smiles.   TWEET: “Write it down and tell someone. It’s the first step toward getting there.” #chasingdreams     How they see others following their dreams   Jamie works with people who are interested in using education to help them figure out their dreams. She loves being the person to remind them of those dreams. Josh sees patients ages 1-98, but he says part of his fun in dentistry is seeing kids grow, develop, and chase their dreams. Gina sees younger staff in their office who want to learn and make their dreams come true. Most of them are in the work because it’s a career they love, and not just a way to make a living.   TWEET: “Do research on what interests you and keep a log of what you find.” #chasingdreams   How they stay sane and their advice for those who think they CAN’T   With busy and demanding careers, it’s vitally important to have other interests that bring joy and peace. Jamie likes to see movies, collect comic books, and spend quality time with friends. Gina has a lifelong passion for calligraphy and is always seeking to do new things with lettering styles. She says it’s a great stress release and gives her a way to make things for people, who are always appreciative of her efforts. Josh gravitates toward woodworking projects like spice racks, wooden pens, and cutting boards. Sometimes he and Gina collaborate on a special project that includes his woodworking and her calligraphy. To the people who think they can’t take on a hobby or don’t have time for self-care interests, they give the following advice: Josh says it comes down to making time for dreams with small, manageable steps; Jamie says you should learn to multitask in small batches of time and always make time for self-care; Gina’s advice is to be a little selfish in taking care of yourself and don’t compare yourself to others. It’s about the progress and the journey you can take joy in that matters most.    Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take-- From Jamie: “Write it down and tell someone. It’s the first step toward getting there.” From Josh: “Take the first step and start small.” From Gina: “Do research on what interests you and keep a log of what you find.”   OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE:   [2:31] The podcasts that interest them most [9:12] What they do today as compared with what they THOUGHT they would do [16:59] Their interactions with people of all genders and ethnicities [21:28] What they do to stay sane [27:54] Their advice to those who think they CAN’T [34:46] ONE action for a dream chaser to take   RESOURCES MENTIONED IN THE EPISODE:   Podcasts mentioned: At Home With The Read Let’s Unpack That Daytime Confidential Embedded How I Built This S-Town The Impact Theory MTR Network Jesus and Jollof   TWEETS YOU CAN USE:   TWEET: “Be a little bit selfish in taking care of yourself.” #chasingdreams   TWEET: “I love helping people figure out their dreams and how to follow them.” #chasingdreams   TWEET: “Practice makes perfect and practice makes progress.” #chasingdreams   TWEET: “There is a lot of stuff happening in our country that we can’t pretend is NOT happening.” #chasingdreams

What does it take to attract people and get them to pay you for what you offer? How do you market yourself online? Let's find out in this episode with our guest Neil & Kristen Winking. They are a couple working on transitioning their experiences as wedding photography business owners to an online membership business model. Neil & Kristen owned a wedding photography business for about 5 years. Kristen ran their business full time, while Neil continued with his full time job and helped out as much as he could. Their business was born from their love of photography, but what they didn't expect were all of the back-end business responsibilities and the many, many hats that entrepreneurs wear to keep everything running smoothly. In fact, it was quite a struggle for them in the beginning as they were learning, sometimes the hard way, how to build and grow their wedding photography business. They became pretty successful, but relocated at the end of 2015, and with that the business closed. Once the family was settled in their new area, they just knew that they wanted to take their business online to allow them both the freedom and flexibility they need to spend more time with their 5 y/o son. They launched Hobby2Pro, where they provide coaching service to other wedding photographers in order for them to build and grow their own wedding photography business, just like they did. With their content and online infrastructure ready, they are faced with their biggest challenge: how do they market themselves? What does it take to really attract people and get them to pay you for what you offer? We're going to talk about how to overcome that mental hurdle of “tooting your own horn” and tactics that can supplement your mindset shift to get more people in your doors. Squeaky Moore is regarded as the “pitch guru” for content creators and she freelances as a development consultant and pitching coach. Moore recently directed and produced “64,” a project on father-absent homes. “Father’s Day?” was also produced by Squeaky, and addresses the effects of absentee fathers. It recently debuted on the launch of Magic Johnson’s Aspire TV Network. “The Positive Controversy” is a show she developed, and “Face of Darkness-Journey to Healing” is documentary film that explores depression and suicide in African-American communities. She authored the book, #100 Pitches: Mistakes I’ve Made So You Don’t Have To, which is a film and TV-pitching guide for independent content creators about the do’s, don’t’s, and strategy of pitching film and TV projects. Dreams that Remain: Have your dreams changed over the years or remained the same? Squeaky says that her dreams have remained for her, from the early age of 11, when she knew she wanted to act. The only difference for her is that she’s given it a shot in front of and behind the Squeaky, is to remain open-minded and optimistic! TWEET: We usually perceive it as #failure if the outcome is different than we envisioned. @squeakymoore What is FAILURE, anyway? What exactly constitutes failure? Squeaky says that it isn’t really what most people think it is! Often, we perceive our efforts as failure, simply because the outcome wasn’t what we wanted or expected. Dealing with disappointment and fear is part of life, and it doesn’t equal failure. Mistakes are just the steps we must take on our way to the success we will become! TWEET: #Mistakes are how we become the successes we become. @squeakymoore Facing FEAR: How do you usually face fear? Squeaky says that she learned to face her fear head-on, and “put it out there so I can’t chicken out.” Becoming a master at not letting NO affect her has changed her perspective and her mindset. Her desire is to help others by letting them know what she has learned through the process of facing fear. Healing comes when you deal with the fear! TWEET: If you ask WHY enough, then you’ll get to the core of the #fear. @squeakymoore   Guest Recommendation: ONE action for a dream chaser to take—“We have to set the goal and put it in writing. Sexual violence is definitely not a new thing, but dream chasers like Mike are on the move to create a safer environment. TWEET: “Every #survivor deserves to have a #voice.” @datesafeproject What are we learning from TV and movies? We need role modeling of the behavior we are seeking, and guess what? We don’t even realize how often these types of violations happen. TWEET: “We’ve only started to create a safer—not safe—environment.” Where does mindfulness come in? Am I really aware of how my words and actions are impacting culture? Probably not! In the workplace, at home, or with friends, we just don’t realize the power of our words and how many people can be affected by them. Why do we judge others? Why do we sexualize them? Why do we say inappropriate things to them or about them? These are the questions Mike wants you to consider! Sell Sheets: An Intro Guide For New Self-Publishers

Synopsis A sell sheet is a one-sheet flyer that gives some detailed information about a book and its author. Here is a short discussion of what a sell sheet is and is not, how to use it, and what information it should include. What You Will Learn In This Post 1. Learn how a sell sheet is defined, and how it compares to a press release. 2. Learn what the basic items are that must be included in a proper sell sheet. 3. Learn how to market your book with a sell sheet. Introduction What Is A Sell Sheet? A sell sheet (sometimes called a “one-sheet” or a “tip-sheet”) is a one-sheet flyer that gives some detailed information about a book and its author. The major point of a sell sheet is to convey your book's benefits in a short and concise manner. It's used to help you market your book directly to book buyers. It's typically used to promote and sell your book to retailers, wholesalers, and even consumers. The sell sheet should always be included in your book's media kit so that news outlets, book reviewers, and bookstores can have quick access to specific details about your book and your marketing plans. Thank you to Joel Friedlander of TheBookDesigner.com for linking to this article from his blog Carnival Of The Indies #76How Does A Press Release Compare To A Sell Sheet? A press release and a sell sheet are two different marketing tools. A press release focuses on the news that you or your book is making. The press release is a way to share news-worthy information and is saying, “Hey, look at me, I have some news-worthy information to share with you.” Conversely, a sell sheet is more of an announcement that your book is out and available. The sell sheet is saying, “Hey, look at me, I have published a new book and I want you to buy it. Here is all the information that you need to know before buying my book.” Thank you to Elizabeth Spann Craig for sharing and linking to my post "Sell Sheets: A Guide For New Self-Publishers."What Must A Sell Sheet Include? • Picture/Image: A high-resolution picture or image of your book • Description: A short, but enticing, description about your book • Title: The full title, including the sub-title • Author Name: Your name here, as it appears on your cover, or website • Author Photograph: If you have enough room, include a photo • Co-Author Name: You guessed it, the co-author's name • Foreword Author: This person typically has a name bigger than your own, so if this is true, include it Sell Sheet Example• Category: List the shelving category (BISG category heading), or subject of your book • ISBN 13: The standard book number assigned to your book • Format: Trade paperback, hardcover, pdf, mobi • Publication Date: The date your book will be available for purchase • Pages: The number of pages of your book • Price: The cover price • Trim: The dimensions of your book (5.5”x8.5”, 8.5”x11”, 6”x9”) • Available from: Ingram, B&T, Amazon, for example • Marketing Plans: Targeted internet advertising; direct mail and email marketing; co-operative catalogs and trade show exhibits; social media marketing; video marketing • Quotes/Testimonials/Blurbs: This is important, especially if you have great ones to use • Call-To-Action: A statement such as “Visit MyBooksWebsiteDotCom for more info.” Thank you very much to book publishing expert and author Dr. Judith Briles, of TheBookShepherd.com, for sharing my blog post. Conclusion How Do You Market Your Book Using A Sell Sheet? When designed properly, the sell sheet will be like having a shortened version of your book's webpage. You must use your sell sheet to communicate as many useful and informative details as you can about your book – but without overdoing it. “Sell sheets should communicate as much useful and informative detail as possible – without overdoing it.” (Tweet) Be sure to put a call-to-action that asks the book buyer to call a phone number, or visit your website,

Joel Boggess is among those I credit for helping me to launch this podcast.  He’s the guy people call when they’re feeling stuck, under-challenged or overwhelmed. Joel teaches people how to find productivity, meaning, and success. Originally from San Antonio, Texas, Joel earned his undergraduate degree at Texas Tech University, an MBA from Amberton University, and a Master’s in Counseling. His latest book, Finding your Voice, hit the #1 spot on Amazon for success, happiness, and in the self-esteem categories. His podcast, ReLaunch has passed the 1.5 million listen mark. Joel and his wife Pei live in the Dallas/Fort-Worth area, and have two dogs; a Golden Retriever retired therapy dog, Bubba, and a Golden rescue, Happy. TWEET: Joel Boggess - Doing is the New #Planning, on this episode of #ChasingDreams When you want to get started in a new endeavor, here’s what you should do. When you’re chasing your dreams you will need help. Nobody can go it alone and nobody should go it alone. Today’s guest, Joel Boggess suggests that you look around in the network of people you already know to see if there is anyone successfully doing what you want to do. If so, reach out to them and ask them if you could get some advice on how they would get started if they were in your shoes. If you DON'T see anyone in your contacts who is successfully doing what you want to do, then you need to ask those you know if THEY know anyone who is doing what you want to do. You’ll be surprised at the number of introductions you could receive and the momentum you’ll gain from this simple approach. Find out more about how to get started chasing your dreams from Joel Boggess, on this episode of Chasing Dreams. Be careful when you share your dreams with others - not everyone is trustworthy. Everybody is excited about their dreams when they first come up with them - and the temptation is to go around telling everyone about the great things you’re going to do. But Joel Boggess says that you need to be careful about sharing your dreams indiscriminately. The reason is that not everyone is going to be as optimistic or excited about your dreams as you are. In fact, you will have some people - even those close to you - who are pessimistic and discouraging about your dreams. Be cautious. Don’t share your dreams with people who are going to drag you down. On this episode, Joel shares how he makes those judgments and when he does share his dreams with others, so be sure you listen. TWEET: Be careful when you share your #dreams with others - not everyone is #trustworthy When you launch anything of value it’s going to take significant work to get going. When Joel Boggess decided to make the switch from radio to podcasting he produced 8 episodes that didn’t go anywhere. In order to make a success of the podcast, he had to change his mindset about what he was doing and take full responsibility for the success of the show. It wasn’t up to his listeners to share his episodes. It wasn’t up to his fans to help him get the show in front of others. It was HIS responsibility and nobody else’s. Once Joel made that mindset shift everything changed. What is YOUR dream that YOU have got to take responsibility for? What are the small but important changes you need to make in the way you get it moving in the right direction? Listen to this episode of Chasing Dreams. You’ll be inspired by the way Joel got his podcast going and will likely have some creative ideas of your own bubble to the surface as a result. Doing is the new planning. Once you get this concept everything changes. When Aimee asked Joel Boggess what one piece of advice he would give to people (like you) who are chasing their dreams, Joel unloaded a gold nugget. Here’s what he said: Doing is the new planning. As he went on to explain, it became clear that what he means is that with every step you take, you open the doors of opportunity that enable you to see what the NEXT step needs to be. Then you have the responsibility to move forward toward THAT new goal. But if you never take the first step, if you never DO anything with it, your options beyond that will be limited. You can find out how to apply this “doing is the new planning” concept to your dream chasing, on this episode of the podcast. TWEET: #Doing is the new #planning. Once you get this concept everything changes OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [0:51] Aimee’s introduction to Joel Boggess, her guest today! [4:52] How Joel got started in radio and broadcasting in the beginning. [9:20] How to connect with someone who’s successful at what you desire to do. [12:10] What it’s like to be the person who helps someone else get their start. [13:59] Lessons learned from sharing a dream with others (not everyone is trustworthy). [17:46] Why Joel switched from radio to podcasting. [20:30] The work Joel has done to build a successful podcast (it took more than one attempt). Today’s guest is Tony Javier. He’s in San Diego crushing it with rehabs and rentals, turning over 60 properties a year. His unique profit making strategy involves a really great rent-to-own policy that’s paid off over the years, and his highly skilled team of employees is really what makes it all possible for him. He’s on today to talk about how important his team and his mentors have been to his success in real estate. Even though rehab is his number one focus, Tony talks a lot about the importance of people. He learned early on how hard it was trying to do everything himself, and it gets even harder if you don’t have a real hiring strategy in place. But even with the systems, you need to put good people in the positions they deserve. When you have the right people, you know you can trust their decisions, trust their deals, and really see your profits soar. How do you find these good people? Tony’s advice involves finding a mentor, someone who’s done it before and can give you advice on how to hire. In fact, Tony’s biggest piece of advice for everyone is to find a mentor ASAP! He’s been using coaches since the beginning – he even finds himself mentoring others half the time – and the lessons he’s learned from them have proven to be invaluable. The best investment you can make is in yourself, and a mentor or a coach will only help you on that path toward enlightenment. Without his mentors, Tony would never have built the team he has today or the unique rent-to-own profit strategy he’s perfected. What exactly is a Twirly Girl? Cynthia Jamin knows and she's here to tell us! Being a “twirly girl” is an appealing persona to a little girl, and Cynthia has made it a reality. With her Twirly Girl business she creates fun and exciting clothing for young girls. Her business began with her two beautiful daughters. She found her girls wanted to dress in a fun and fashionable way, and since she had some sewing experience, Cynthia was able to bring their wishes to life. From there Twirly Girl was born and has gone on to become a popular clothing brand. It's steady growth has shown Cynthia how to operate a successful business. On this episode of Launch Grow Joy we discuss how Cynthia made her business a reality, the journey she has experienced as a result, and the techniques that have helped her grow Twirly Girl into the wildly successful company it is today. In this episode, you'll also hear about: The importance of being genuine. Why a customer-producer relationship is necessary. How should you balance a retail-wholesale percentage? The importance of being in communication with your customers. How can you keep the momentum once you experience success? And so much more! Cynthia has discovered how much e-commerce has exploded over recent years. She remembers how confusing it was to spread the word about her dresses when she began Twirly Girl! She began with her own market (mothers), and searched for “mom bloggers” to help her get the word out about her new business. She also went to every school event she could. Cynthia began her business locally, and has made an effort to continue running Twirly Girl in Los Angeles. She says that all of her products are manufactured in the United States, even though her fabrics are produced outside of the US. She also likes the idea of keeping her batches small so she can keep an eye on how products turn out, which is one advantage of keeping her business local. Cynthia enjoys communicating with her customers directly, and tries to keep her business as personable as possible. Doing so allows her to connect with her customers and hear valuable feedback. As successful as Cynthia is she has encountered her share of setbacks while growing Twirly Girl. One of the best pieces of advice she has is to inspect your website or platform and make sure that they are big enough to take you and your business where you want to go. Cynthia offers so much valuable advice and guidance on today's show. We talk about how to create, sustain and truly love your business and what you do. She also speaks on how to remember the joy and happiness that your business grew out of, so be sure to tune in for the full scoop!
