Is Existential Therapy for You? (And What Exactly Is It?)

Inside Mental Health: A Psych Central Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 6, 2023 31:32

Existentialism is a philosophy that emphasizes the existence of the individual person as a free and responsible agent who determines their own development through acts of will. So, what is existential therapy and how can this philosophy be used to better our own lives through counseling?  Join us as today's guest, Dr. Christopher S. Taylor, tells us more about this therapeutic practice and what basis it has in science. It's a practice that seems new, but has actually been around for a very long time. To learn more -- or read the transcript -- please visit the official episode page. Our guest. Christopher S. Taylor, Ph.D. LPC-S, author of My Digital Practice and host of the For Self-Examination podcast, is an adjunct professor of counseling ethics at Dallas Theological Seminary and Amberton University. Dr. Taylor utilizes existential psychotherapy to provide treatment for individuals struggling with loss of identity. In 2015, he was appointed by Governor Greg Abbott to serve on the Texas State Board of Examiners of Professional Counselors as a professional member, and was reappointed to continue serving on the board in 2021. In 2018, he was unanimously voted as vice-chair of the board. Dr. Taylor founded Taylor Counseling Group in 2015 with a mission to provide affordable, accessible, and reliable mental health services. Taylor Counseling Group was founded on five core values: Affordable Care, Transformational Change, Collaborative Growth, Community Support and Human Capital. With 9 locations in Dallas, Galleria Dallas, Coppell, Southlake, Fort Worth, Waxahachie, Houston Memorial Park, The Woodlands, and San Antonio, the affordable counseling provider has plans for rapid growth throughout Texas.  Working with various state and private organizations such as Child Protective Services since 2008, Dr. Taylor has experienced the lack of community support for broken homes in both urban and rural communities. In an endeavor to alleviate this issue, Dr. Taylor served as the court coordinator and program developer for Legacy Family Court in Dallas County from 2013 to 2016. In 2015, Legacy Family Court was recognized as “An Agent of Change” by the Council on Drug and Alcohol Abuse and was awarded an official resolution by Dallas County. In 2016, the Agricultural Commissioner appointed Dr. Taylor to serve on the Rural Health Task Force to assist in developing solutions for the expansion of mental health programs in rural Texas communities.  Dr. Taylor completed his Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy with a concentration in existentialism at Texas A&M University. He continues to research and write on the subject of identity and existential development. Our host, Gabe Howard is an award-winning writer and speaker who lives with bipolar disorder. He is the author of the popular book, "Mental Illness is an Asshole and other Observations," available from Amazon; signed copies are also available directly from the author. You can't give awards to everyone or else they lose their meaning. Stickers, pizza, and lollipops. Oftentimes adults don't try things because they are uncomfortable with them, not the students. Small extrinsic incentives are not about the award, but instead about the intrinsic feeling of being valued and admiration from the teacher. Leaders need to give specific feedback to students after observing a class to make them feel more of a sense of belonging or encouragement. You need to go out of our way to include student and teacher voice and choice. Leaders need to increase engagement by setting the example and ensuring there is follow through on what they are asking for. Make sure you are leading by listening and delegating. In this episode, she also talks about listening to the customer's voice, implementing operational changes, and much more. 3 Takeaways:It's important to remember that every decision that gets made may not be the right decision for every customer and the job of the CXO is to decide what is best for the majority of their customers. The job of a CX leader is to fix a problem before the customer has told you how they want it fixed. In order to have a great customer experience, you need to make sure that everyone on your team has bought into your CX vision, and having open discussions with them about their client conversations is one way to get everyone on the same page.Key Quotes:“It can never be black and white with the customer because every customer is different, But in theory, the process of what we need to understand is the same. So we make sure that we address those different themes with all the customers to understand their translation.”“If a customer says something on a survey, we do a query for all of our calls to see if it's a theme, and if we see things in our calls, we then do a survey to the customer to get a better understanding of what that means to them.”"You not only need to understand the persona of your customer, you need to translate that into how you operate for those personas."Thank you to our friendsThis episode is brought to you by IBM. Darin chats with his friend and college roommate Dr. Steve Lawson, a pastor, speaker, entrepreneur, and athlete. Dr. Lawson is a Crossfit athlete and Level 1 coach as well as a gymnastics coach. He began coaching gymnastics while he was still in college, and eventually started his own manufacturing business, Progressive Sports and Fitness, building trampolines, tumbling floors, and other equipment for gymnastic competitions. His company's equipment is can be seen at every Power Tumbling World Championships as well as the USA National Championships.   After a decade in the manufacturing business, Dr. Lawson decided to plant a church in his hometown of Greenville, TX and spent the next 17 years as a pastor. During this time he earned a Master of Divinity (MDIV) from The King’s University, followed that with a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from Amberton University and finally a Doctor of Strategic Leadership (DSL) from Regent University. His education combined with his experience as a pastor took him deep into the concept of emotional intelligence, and how to cultivate it. He now gives lectures and leadership seminars on emotional intelligence around the world.   Dr. Lawson has authored three books: Giant Killers Marriage is Worth Fighting For The Prevailing Marriage   Those of us who have trained hard for a long time know that hard training refines us in more ways than just the physical. Doing hard things transforms our mind as well, including our ability to process emotions. But it works the other way too... we bring our behaviors and the way we carry ourselves into the gym, and those elements are reflected in our workouts. So it's important to actively grow our emotional intelligence, improve our self-esteem, and learn how to foster better relationships... just like we grow our strength.   Get in touch with Dr. Lawson here: Dr. Lawson's website Dr. Lawson's speaking engagements at Leadership Transformation

There are times in our life when we may need to ReLaunch all or at least part of our job, business, relationships or even our entire life. Yes, that is easier said than done. And that's what makes this topic important enough for us to have this conversation. Well, Joel Boggess knows a thing our two about ReLaunching. He's going to share a few ideas with you here today. At age five, I nearly lost my life in a freak accident that involved a 30-foot bridge, a train, a head-first fall, multiple skull fractures, and so much blood loss, the rescue team was unable to start an IV on my five year-old arm, because all the blood vessels had collapsed. However, because of heroic Divine and medical intervention, my broken body was stabilized for the 45-minute drive to downtown San Antonio and I was admitted to Santa Rosa Children’s Hospital, where I would spend the next 3 weeks of my life, fighting for it, in a deep coma. Pulling out of the coma, then at age six, I spent an additional three weeks in the hospital beginning an extensive recovery, which took me years to pull through. I got a second chance at life. Many don’t. http://relaunchshow.com/joel-boggess/ (Continue Joel's story...) https://menofabundance.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/06/relaunch-starting-over-with-confidence1-300.jpg ()Joel Boggess is the speaker to call when your office, team, or organization is feeling stuck, under-challenged or overwhelmed. Joel Boggess is among those I credit for helping me to launch this podcast.  He’s the guy people call when they’re feeling stuck, under-challenged or overwhelmed. Joel teaches people how to find productivity, meaning, and success. Originally from San Antonio, Texas, Joel earned his undergraduate degree at Texas Tech University, an MBA from Amberton University, and a Master’s in Counseling. His latest book, Finding your Voice, hit the #1 spot on Amazon for success, happiness, and in the self-esteem categories. His podcast, ReLaunch has passed the 1.5 million listen mark. Joel and his wife Pei live in the Dallas/Fort-Worth area, and have two dogs; a Golden Retriever retired therapy dog, Bubba, and a Golden rescue, Happy. TWEET: Joel Boggess - Doing is the New #Planning, on this episode of #ChasingDreams When you want to get started in a new endeavor, here’s what you should do. When you’re chasing your dreams you will need help. Nobody can go it alone and nobody should go it alone. Today’s guest, Joel Boggess suggests that you look around in the network of people you already know to see if there is anyone successfully doing what you want to do. If so, reach out to them and ask them if you could get some advice on how they would get started if they were in your shoes. If you DON'T see anyone in your contacts who is successfully doing what you want to do, then you need to ask those you know if THEY know anyone who is doing what you want to do. You’ll be surprised at the number of introductions you could receive and the momentum you’ll gain from this simple approach. Find out more about how to get started chasing your dreams from Joel Boggess, on this episode of Chasing Dreams. Be careful when you share your dreams with others - not everyone is trustworthy. Everybody is excited about their dreams when they first come up with them - and the temptation is to go around telling everyone about the great things you’re going to do. But Joel Boggess says that you need to be careful about sharing your dreams indiscriminately. The reason is that not everyone is going to be as optimistic or excited about your dreams as you are. In fact, you will have some people - even those close to you - who are pessimistic and discouraging about your dreams. Be cautious. Don’t share your dreams with people who are going to drag you down. On this episode, Joel shares how he makes those judgments and when he does share his dreams with others, so be sure you listen. TWEET: Be careful when you share your #dreams with others - not everyone is #trustworthy When you launch anything of value it’s going to take significant work to get going. When Joel Boggess decided to make the switch from radio to podcasting he produced 8 episodes that didn’t go anywhere. In order to make a success of the podcast, he had to change his mindset about what he was doing and take full responsibility for the success of the show. It wasn’t up to his listeners to share his episodes. It wasn’t up to his fans to help him get the show in front of others. It was HIS responsibility and nobody else’s. Once Joel made that mindset shift everything changed. What is YOUR dream that YOU have got to take responsibility for? What are the small but important changes you need to make in the way you get it moving in the right direction? Listen to this episode of Chasing Dreams. You’ll be inspired by the way Joel got his podcast going and will likely have some creative ideas of your own bubble to the surface as a result. Doing is the new planning. Once you get this concept everything changes. When Aimee asked Joel Boggess what one piece of advice he would give to people (like you) who are chasing their dreams, Joel unloaded a gold nugget. Here’s what he said: Doing is the new planning. As he went on to explain, it became clear that what he means is that with every step you take, you open the doors of opportunity that enable you to see what the NEXT step needs to be. Then you have the responsibility to move forward toward THAT new goal. But if you never take the first step, if you never DO anything with it, your options beyond that will be limited. You can find out how to apply this “doing is the new planning” concept to your dream chasing, on this episode of the podcast. TWEET: #Doing is the new #planning. Once you get this concept everything changes OUTLINE OF THIS EPISODE: [0:51] Aimee’s introduction to Joel Boggess, her guest today!
