Last month, Charlotte celebrated what’s known as “Meck Dec Day," the annual holiday in honor of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence. On May 20, 1775 — more than a full year before the United States Declaration of Independence — it's said that influential men of Charlotte declared themselves "free and independent" of British rule. In honor of Meck Dec Day, this week FAQ City is revisiting a 2018 episode about Charlotte's Revolutionary war history.
The United States Declaration of Independence declares that our inalienable rights include life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. There's a school of thought that suggests the word “pursuit” wasn't intended to be defined as chasing. But, rather, as being. In the same way that stamp collecting is a pursuit, “the pursuit of happiness,” according to this interpretation, is our inalienable right not to chase after happiness, but to be happy. There's no need for all 300 million of us in the U.S. to agree on what individually makes each of us happy. But you can be pretty confident there are two things most of us would agree on: Love. And ice cream. Love Love generally requires two people. You and someone you love, and who loves you. Finding that special someone to share love with is definitely a pursuit. In both senses of the word. To achieve it, in the past 20 years or so we've developed any number of dating apps. The major criticism of these apps is, either they are too shallow for finding love – like Tinder – or they develop into endless online chats, and people seldom actually end up meeting in real life. Yes, I said the *right* to worship as we see fit, not *privilege*. Not What Our Founding Fathers Intended Let me read for you a portion of the United States Declaration of Independence: We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Declaration of Independence Now, listen to this: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States of America So just so there was no mistake, the first amendment to the Constitution of the United States makes very clear that the free exercise of religion *cannot* legally be stifled, *cannot* legally be stopped. What is happening to our churches is unconstitutional and unlawful. What To Do So now what? What are we to do? Well beloved, the complete answer to that question is far beyond the scope of this podcast. I have my ideas, but this podcast is about the reading of God's Word. It's not a civics podcast or a legal podcast or a political podcast. I'll say just one more thing, though. In the Declaration of Independence, just after the part I read to you a moment ago, about our rights being endowed by our Creator, our founding fathers wrote this: That, to secure these rights, governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed. That, whenever any form of government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the right of the people to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new government, laying its foundation on such principles, and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their safety and happiness.Declaration of Independence So the founders knew that even good governments can come off the rails. And they said that if that happens, the people have a right to make the necessary changes to fix it, and if that fails, to throw the bums out and start over. After nearly 250 years, maybe the time is approaching that we take a closer look at that paragraph. Maybe, and I only mean MAYBE, maybe God allowed the lockdowns of our churches so we would again yearn for and appreciate the right to worship as a body. In his dissertation, John Witherspoon’s Forgotten “Lectures on History and Chronology”: Recognizing the Important Role of History in the Development of His Thought and Theology for Navigating Eighteenth-Century Late Protestant Scholasticism, Revivalism, and Enlightenment, Null writes: Witherspoon had to contend with the legacy of late seventeenth century Protestant scholasticism, newer forms of revivalism, and more rationalistic developments in eighteenth century enlightenment thought. A detailed but fading emphasis on the decrees, preparation for grace, and the application of redemption merged with a more secular emphasis on free thought involving induction, empiricism, idealism, and common sense philosophy, as well as challenges from new theological movements in holiness, revivalism, and pietism. Revolutions in politics, science, logic, and theological priorities were frequent and significant. Changes in both the worlds of theology and philosophy would continue throughout the eighteenth century. The relationship of history to theology became foundational for Witherspoon not simply as an extension of late Protestant scholasticism, an expression of Christian piety, or an excessive reliance on, or aversion toward, a specific enlightenment philosophy. In his writings, theology itself was undergoing change, and specifically in Witherspoon’s case, toward integrating an important awareness of history. This awareness demonstrates the importance of history very early in the rise of Princeton theology.

Locke's theory of mind is often cited as the origin of modern conceptions of identity and the self, figuring prominently in the work of later philosophers such as David Hume, Rousseau, and Immanuel Kant. Locke was the first to define the self through a continuity of consciousness. He postulated that, at birth, the mind was a blank slate or tabula rasa. This is now known as empiricism. Life and work Locke's father, also called John, was a country lawyer and clerk to the Justices of the Peace in Chew Magna, who had served as a captain of cavalry for the Parliamentarian forces during the early part of the English Civil War. His mother was Agnes Keene. Both parents were Puritans. Locke was born on 29 August 1632, in a small thatched cottage by the church in Wrington, Somerset, about 12 miles from Bristol. He was baptised the same day. Soon after Locke's birth, the family moved to the market town of Pensford, about seven miles south of Bristol, where Locke grew up in a rural Tudor house in Belluton. So why am I bringing this up? I was doing some research for today's episode, and found that the first constitution wasn't actually written in 1776. It was ratified in 1781. Why is that year significant? Well, that's the same year that a man named Sir William Herschel discovered Uranus. He thought it was a comet, it was very difficult to see, especially with the technology at that time. But a couple years later, they were able to confirm for sure that it was a new planet. And they named it after the Greek deity, Oranous or Father Sky, the corollary to Mother Earth. So the planet became known as Uranus. 1781 is very significant year for revolution and change and transformation for an entire nation and really for the whole world. And that's the year we discover this planet Uranus. The pursuit of happiness is one of the three “unalienable rights” suggested by the the United States Declaration of Independence – but the very act of this pursuit is problematic, and the single most destructive element in your relationship to truth. Because real happiness isn’t some destination that you can get to by constructing a long enough bridge. This false happiness is built on illusion, and eventually, life will catch up to you and set you straight. Real fulfillment is already and always there – and through awareness, we can deconstruct our blocks to it and experience it, regardless of the content in our lives. So today, I suggest that we have to make the pursuit of truth, of realness, more important than everything and anything else, especially happiness, so you can discover how happy it will make you. The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor sunk multiple ships and killed over 2,000 people at the Naval Base on Oahu. As soon as it happened, it appeared that Japan had brought America into World War II. Yet America's formal declaration of war was so important and crucial that President Franklin Roosevelt went before a joint session of Congress to urge a declaration of war the next day. Roosevelt's speech, in which he famously said that the Japanese attack would make December 7, 1941 "a date which will live in infamy," built a case for America already being at war with Japan. After dealing with a significant isolationist movement in America and a disinterest in participating in a second World War, Roosevelt's urging was key. Immediately after his 7 minute speech, the Senate and the House took up the vote. The Senate unanimously voted for the Declaration of War by a margin of 82-0; the House voted for it by a margin of 388-1. Only the pacifist Jeannette Rankin refused to vote for the declaration. The entry of the United States of America would turn the tide of the war significantly, changing the shape of the conflict.
The sources and interpretation of the Declaration have been the subject of much scholarly inquiry. The Declaration justified the independence of the United States by listing colonial grievances against King George III, and by asserting certain natural and legal rights, including a right of revolution. Having served its original purpose in announcing independence, references to the text of the Declaration were few in the following years. Abraham Lincoln made it the centerpiece of his rhetoric (as in the Gettysburg Address of 1863), and his policies. Since then, it has become a well known statement on human rights, particularly its second sentence: We hold these truths to be selfevident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. This has been called "one of the bestknown sentences in the English language", containing "the most potent and consequential words in American history". The passage came to represent a moral standard to which the United States should strive. This view was notably promoted by Abraham Lincoln, who considered the Declaration to be the foundation of his political philosophy, and argued that the Declaration is a statement of principles through which the United States Constitution should be interpreted. The United States Declaration of Independence inspired many other similar documents in other countries, with its ideas gaining adherence in the Low Countries, as well as in the Caribbean, Spanish America, the Balkans, West Africa, and Central Europe in the decades up to 1848.
