What drives individuals to leave the Orthodox path, and how have modern influences like digital culture shaped this phenomenon? Rabbi David Aaron addresses these pressing questions and more, offering profound insights into the challenges and opportunities facing Orthodox Judaism today. This episode delves into the emotional and relational struggles families experience when a loved one chooses a different path, providing practical guidance for navigating these complex dynamics. Rabbi Aaron also explores how Orthodox communities can foster a more supportive and inclusive environment for those questioning their faith or lifestyle. We discuss the role of education in addressing doubts and encouraging open dialogue about God and Torah observance and examine how individuals and organizations can best support those transitioning away from or back into the Orthodox community. Finally, we reflect on the broader lessons to be learned from the "Off the Derekh" phenomenon, highlighting its implications for the evolving relationship between faith, community, and personal identity in the modern world. In a time when nearly every family is touched by these challenges, this conversation offers essential perspectives and practical solutions. --- • Bio: Rabbi Aaron received his rabbinic ordination for Yeshivat ITRI. His poetry grapples with ideas of Chassidus and their application in real "messy life," including some very personal reflections. Three collections of his poetry have been published, and his work has found appeal with audiences far outside of Lubavitch but also within Lubavitch itself. In this episode, we discuss the space that writing poetry fills in the life of a chossid, how even whilst surrounded by the great books there is a space within that deserves honest reflection and even sharing with others. Give Me That D: A Disney Channel Original Movie Breakdown Podcast
Hello Give Me That D fam! Get out your tissues, because this one is emotionalllll. We're breaking down “A Ring of Endless Light” with one of our dearest, Adrienne Teeley! Now, this is an interesting film because it's not so much a “DCOM” as it is a HEART WRENCHING drama that left all of us weeping. This film finds three siblings arriving on an island to spend the summer with their beloved Grandfather (greatest man alive). Our main gal Vicky (Mischa Barton) is a head-in-the-clouds artist who finds herself in a love triangle with fun boy, Zachery, and dolphin scientist nerd, Adam. It's a pretty run of the mill summer coming of age story EXCEPT Vicky finds out she can communicate telepathically with dolphins. So jealous. This movie hits on, growing up, love, death, passions, drift nets, and most importantly how dolphins have PAWS (the FUQ?!). And if that wasn't enough, they also had to make Vicky a dolphin doula… because why not?! TBH, we actually love this movie??!!! Hope you love it too! Enjoyyyyyyy
Ryan Merriman, the reigning king of DCOMS, stars in this film about a girl who can talk to dolphins. We talk James Whitmire, Mischa Barton, Dean from Gilmore Girls, and more in this episode.
Molly, Alan, and Max follow the adventures of Marissa Coop... uh... Vicky as she navigates a love triangle on an isolated island with the help of her grandfather and telepathic dolphins. Wow, that was an odd sentence to write.
CW: Blood, Suicide, Cancer, Death ...Yeah this is a heavy movie for a DCOM, but more in a soapy way than ACTUALLY heavy. Seriously, who read the FOURTH book in a lesser known book series from the 1960s-1980s and said to themselves "Yes. This. This is Disney Channel material." But hey- there's dolphins! Keep up with the rankings at bit.ly/2U55zQy and follow our socials @DCOM_Mission!
Do you like dolphins? Do you like extremely predictable romantic drama? Do you like heavy handed religious metaphors? If any of these things sound like your idea of a good time then you're either Luke Westaway, or someone else who is going to enjoy the film we're talking about this week, A Ring of Endless Light. The movie tells the story of Vicky Austin, an aspiring poet who spends the summer on Seven Bay Island, an island on the Atlantic coast of the US that is just lousy with dolphins, evil fishermen, and hot boys to become entangled in love triangles with. Will Vicky be able to choose between earnest but kind dolphin researcher Adam Eddington and torrid bad boy Zachary Gray? Can she truly communicate with dolphins telepathically? And just why did dolphins make the conscious decision to give up their hands? The answers to some of these questions await! If you've watched A Ring of Endless Light and have your own thoughts, email them to us at momcantcookpod@gmail.com for a chance to have them read out on the show. Meet Rabbi David Aaron Rabbi David Aaron is a spiritual teacher who has invested over 4 decades delving into life's BIGGEST question marks and sharing his life-changing wisdom and insights with adults and young adults. He has emerged as the ‘God expert' simply because he has dared to ask and answer the most difficult questions that he/ALL people have and/or struggle with about God's existence and their own. And while the name ‘God' appears on the cover of almost all his books, he doesn't believe in ‘God' – not in the popular sense of that word, which leaves the Divine entirely misunderstood. Rabbi Aaron has authored several books, including Endless Light, Seeing G-d, Love is My Religion, The Secret Life of G-d, Inviting G-d In, Living a Joyous Life, and The God Powered Life. His books have attracted national media attention, including Larry King Live and E! Entertainment. He lives in Jerusalem with his wife, Chana, and seven children. The Meaning of Kabbalah Just like the Law of Attraction, Kabbalah is about the Law of Reception and the teachings that all good is here now and always. The problem is that we don't know how to get reception. Rabbi Aaron shares that we're like radios, and we have to engineer our life to be receptive to hearing God and Good. The most important things in life are not things. Experiencing love, peace, good, and God are always here and available to everyone. And remember, if you don't vibe with the word God, just substitute the word Good. Endless Light Rabbi Aaron shared more deeply about the title of his book, Endless Light, and how we don't see light — light allows us to see. God is like the light that allows us to see what's there. God is a light, even though you can't see God. It's not about ‘seeing is believing', rather, it's about ‘believing is seeing'. Not seeing is actually believing. What's most important is to learn to live from the light of God and see opportunities to be of greater service. We're here to love and be of service to others. The 4 Steps to Love Love, by definition, means you don't have to be worthy to receive it, although many of us get this backward. If you deserve love, it's not a gift – it's a payment. Love is a gift and is not a business model. What's happening is that we don't have clarity on what we're here to receive. The greatest gift is our presence and being able to truly and fully be there for and with others, be it our partner, family member, or friend. In truth, we're all made of love – that's why we're here. Love is about giving AND also receiving. Rabbi Aaron shared what he calls the 4 ingredients of love: Create space for someone else and move yourself out of the center. Respect and honor that the other person is not you and is different from you. Don't try to make them be like you. To give of yourself to another person is giving your presence so they can be seen and heard. Allow your partner to do the same with you and allow space to receive love. Remember that intimacy is ‘into-me-I-see'...it's about learning to be comfortable with receiving love. A beautiful quote: ‘We're all pieces of love.' Accessing Your Personal Power All the personal power within you is not from you. You couldn't turn your heart off for 30 seconds because the power of your beating heart doesn't come from you. Tap into and connect with the power that is beating your heart. Get to know this power that is loving and guiding you. Meditating on your pulse is a great way to access your personal power and feel a deep connection to the miracle that is you. Feel your pulse with your finger. Notice how your pulse is happening without you giving it directions. Meditate on the marvel and mystery that every heartbeat is a gift because all of you is a gift. How To Really Be Happy The way to true happiness is through loving yourself. When you love yourself, you're happier and are able to spread happiness to others. As Rabbi Aaron said, it's not the things that will bring you happiness. It's about being yourself, living your service, and expressing the happiness that comes from living a life that is about being of service to others. Holy Selfishness Holy Selfishness is about knowing that we intrinsically need each other and that the aim is to be loving to others. Love is actually a good selfishness. The goal is to act from a place of wholeness and to focus on being holy, or ‘wholly,' as you are part of a greater whole. This is holy wholeness. Love is a good selfishness because it means together we honor and acknowledge the shared one greater self. Kabbalah teaches that we're all emanating from one root self. Even though we are individual sparks of the Divine, we are also of one field of consciousness, one soul, and one self of the Universe. As always, my friend, take what you like and leave the rest. I hope this conversation reminds you of your infinite goodness, your connection to an all-loving force, and that you're inherently worthy of real love, peace, and joy. Born in 1918, L'Engle grew up in New York City, Switzerland, South Carolina and Massachusetts. Her father was a reporter and her mother had studied to be a pianist, and their house was always full of musicians and theater people. L'Engle graduated cum laude from Smith College, then returned to New York to work in the theater. While touring with a play, she wrote her first book, The Small Rain, originally published in 1945. She met her future husband, Hugh Franklin, when they both appeared in The Cherry Orchard. Upon becoming Mrs. Franklin, L'Engle gave up the stage in favor of the typewriter. In the years her three children were growing up, she wrote four more novels. Hugh Franklin temporarily retired from the theater, and the family moved to western Connecticut and for ten years ran a general store. Her book Meet the Austins, an American Library Association Notable Children's Book of 1960, was based on this experience. Her science fantasy classic A Wrinkle in Time was awarded the 1963 Newbery Medal. Two companion novels, A Wind in the Door and A Swiftly Tilting Planet (a Newbery Honor book), complete what has come to be known as The Time Trilogy, a series that continues to grow in popularity with a new generation of readers. This movie is all about breaking records: more awkward kisses, more people drowning, and more live dolphin births than any other DCOM. It's also got Mischa Barton and Jared Padalecki starring alongside each other just a few years before they both hit their TV stride. WIth all these positives, what could possibly go wrong??? Well, lots of things. We suggest you pour yourself a Dolphin Hugger and make it a double, because we can only talk about telepathic Christian dolphins for so long before the conversation turns to dolphin genitalia and that time NASA paid a woman to give acid to a dolphin and teach it to speak English.

For ten years, my father's furniture and books lurked in the study he abandoned. I don't remember a time when we thought he might come back, but his belongings were like a bookmark, holding a place in our lives... -- Virginia Zimmerman, The Rosemary Spell I don't know about you, but I'm still enthralled by a wonderful children's book -- especially when there's a mystery or puzzle at the heart of the adventure. The Rosemary Spell is a perfect book for middle-grade readers who want a little magic, a little mystery, and a lot of friendship. This is a book about the power of books, and Virginia Zimmerman is an expert on that. You can learn more about her on her website, including links to an article she wrote on the importance of letting -- or even encouraging -- children to re-read. Teachers, do not miss out on the fantastic teacher's guide that was created for The Rosemary Spell by Pamela Brunskill. In particular, if you teach poetry or want to introduce your cherubs to Shakespeare, The Rosemary Spell is the book to check out. We talked about some favorites for children: A Wrinkle in Time, A Ring of Endless Light (both by Madeleine L'Engle), the Harry Potter series, and one that is new to me, When You Reach Me, by Rebecca Stead. For adults, Virginia gave a shout-out to Middlemarch by George Eliot and Pride and Prejudice, my favorite Jane Austen novel (and I know I'm not alone!). Keep tabs on Virginia and her upcoming books via her website, on Twitter, on Instagram, and on Facebook. As always, if you'd rather read than listen, the transcript is below. Enjoy! -- Laura Transcript of Interview with Virginia Zimmerman Laura Brennan: Virginia Zimmerman writes novels for young readers and teaches English at Bucknell University for somewhat older readers. Her beautiful middle-grade novel, The Rosemary Spell, has at its heart a book, and with it all the magic and mystery that books bring into our lives. Plus, in this case, there’s a smidge more magic and mystery than usual. Virginia, thank you for joining me. Virginia Zimmerman: Thank you for having me, it's great to be here. LB: So, you're both an author and an English professor. Tell me a little bit about that career path. Was it always going to be books? VZ: It was definitely always going to be books, from kindergarten when I would read to the rest of my class, it was always going to be books. But exactly what that meant was less certain. I decided pretty early in college that I was going to major in English, but I didn't have the intention of going on to be an English professor until pretty late in college. And then even when I became an English professor, I did that because someone said to me, you should think about what you like to do and then you should choose the career that allows you to do that. Which of course is easier said than done. But in my case, what I liked to do was read and write and talk about books. So being an English professor was the obvious way to continue to do those things. I didn't even really think seriously at all about writing books until well into my career. I had been at Bucknell as a professor for several years before I started writing. So yes, it was always going to be books, but it wasn't always going to be the case that I was writing those books. That was a relatively late development. LB: The Rosemary Spell is a book about the power of books. VZ: Yes. LB: So, for someone who hasn't read that yet, what do they need to know to be able to follow our conversation? VZ: Well, The Rosemary Spell follows Rosemary and her best friend, Adam, as they find an ancient book locked in a cupboard in Rosemary's room. They're immediately intrigued by the book because they are both book lovers themselves. They quickly discover a poem in the book which has the power to make people disappear, not just physically but also from memory. They accidentally disappear somebody very important to them and have to work h...
