The most current numbers of caregivers in the United States is staggering - over 53 million unpaid caregivers but the number that baffles me the most is the number of veteran caregivers - 5.5 million.  Among these military caregivers, approximately 20% were caring for veterans who served after 9/11, while the majority were caring for veterans from previous eras. These numbers are from 2019-2020 and may have increased since that time. The subject of caregiving came up most recently when I was taking care of my mother for approximately 2-3 months. It was in a word, overwhelming.  I wanted to speak with Ayana to discuss this epidemic among our veteran families and how we as caregivers can take care of ourselves in the process.Listen in as we discuss this and how her Caregivers Toolbox can help!! Ayana is a Navy veteran who later became a MilSpouse and Peer Support Specialist.  She launched her business REACH Peer Support Services, LLC in 2021.  Her collaborations include The Pink Berets, Camp Shield, Grace Tree Foundation and the Texas Veteran's Commission.Support the show

Description: A candid look at the life of a  military caregiver teen. This program is powered in part by Wounded Warrior Project® to honor and empower post-9/11 injured service members, veterans, and their families. https://www.woundedwarriorproject.org/   Show Notes: Hidden Heroes: https://hiddenheroes.org/resources/hiddenhelpers/ Bio: Kris Rotenberry is an 18-year-old from Baltimore, Maryland. While his father Chuck was active- duty U.S. Marine Corps, the family moved 11 times over the course of Chuck's 12-year career, followed by two more in the reserve at Quantico, Virginia. While deployed to Afghanistan, he was injured by an IED, causing a traumatic brain injury (TBI), which was not diagnosed until after his symptoms and behaviors began to impact his marriage to high school sweetheart, Liz, and their family's well-being. As the oldest son of four kids, Liz relies on Kris to help care for his younger siblings so she could leave the house to run errands. The responsibilities of caregiving cause Kris to become anxious and hypersensitive to his father's moods, and he has developed secondary post-traumatic stress disorder. Liz could see the changes in her son's mood as he would often become distant. She said he shared the same traumatic stare as her husband during bad memories of war. One day, Liz found Kris in his room, shortly after he attempted to take his own life by hanging. Kris has entered therapy, which has greatly helped his wellbeing. Kris shares that being a military caregiver kid is an entirely unique experience compared to children who do not live the sort of life caregiving entails. It requires mental and emotional strength to overcome daily challenges. He believes it has taught him lessons and skills he can use in his future and has shaped him into recognizing the needs of others. Kris recently graduated from high school and is interested in pursuing a career in trade. He has a real talent for working with his hands and loves mechanical design. He has made health a priority, and the gym is his safe space to release any emotional or mental weight. Kris has grown into an incredible young man, and he'd tell you that his past has made him into a stronger person. Bio: Elizabeth Rotenberry, Liz, is a military caregiver for her husband, a USMC Wounded Warrior of Operation Iraqi Freedom & Operation Enduring Freedom Veteran. As an Elizabeth Dole Fellow Alumna, Liz works to advocate not only for herself and her family, but for all Military and Veteran Caregivers. Liz joined the Elizabeth Dole Foundation as their Caregiver Community Program Coordinator and is now the Foundation's Fellows Program Manager.

The WHO wants more money for the pandemic response team they plan to establish, but we need to keep in mind that they helped further the crises by helping China hide the health outbreak in the first place!  Veteran Caregivers are being removed from the caregiver program at a rate of almost 90%. While there is the largest boost in military pay at 4.6%, inflation far outpaces the boost. We will also discuss the flat tax, the wealthy getting wealthier and how our representatives made it possible… all while lining their own pockets. Happy Throat Punch Thursday?! We are joined by Shawn Moore, founder of Caregivers on the Homefront to discuss the prevalence of suicidality in our veteran caregivers and what we can do to support our caregivers.Caregivers on the Homefront. serving the families who care for the warriors of all military eras and first responders. (caregivers-homefront.org) Phenotypes of caregiver distress in military and veteran caregivers: Suicidal ideation associations (plos.org)PER RESEARCH ARTICLE: This study's findings identify a public health concern and a call to action. Suicide is the tenth leading cause of death in the US and suicide among veterans is already a public health problem. This study also identifies significant suicide risk for military caregivers. Presently, there are no registries or efforts in monitoring suicide among military families. Military caregivers of the latest era of war are younger, in the prime of their adult life, not yet at the age of retirement, and not yet at the age when a caregiver role is assumed, which typically occurs at the age of retirement. As a result, the emotional, physical, and social toll of caregiving in this group of younger caregivers may last for decades. A healthy and productive life while being a caregiver may require significant support from programs and policies that can strengthen the health and well-being of caregivers, with an emphasis on career progression. To date few programs are addressing suicide in military and veteran caregivers. This study sheds light on some of the factors and caregiver characteristics associated with suicidal ideation, a contribution we hope can be incorporated in future prevention initiatives. This study suggests that education interruption, loss of self, and the stress of caregiving are important contributors that warrant further evaluation."Thank you to BetterHelp for sponsoring today's episode!Behind the Service listeners can get 10% off by visiting:https://betterhelp.com/behindtheserviceHome » Coming Home WellWe are a 501C3 nonprofit organization.Make sure you like, leave a review and share with a friend!Follow us on IG @behindtheservice and @cominghomwell_btsFacebook at Behind The Service or Coming Home WellLinkedIn at Coming Home WellBehind The Service made the list! We're #12 and proud to be listed with so many other great podcasts!Best 20 Military Wife Podcasts You Must Follow in 2021 (feedspot.com)

Borne the Battle

Everyone needs a break from time to time. Borne the Battle - and, more importantly, its host - decided to take a short break from production. It's been a month since our last episode was published, but I was still recording interviews in that span of time. A couple of the interviews I did were with caregivers. With November being National Caregivers Month, and with this week being Thanksgiving, I decided to bring the podcast back to full form with two episodes featuring caregivers. Not only to spotlight their efforts, but to show our gratitude for the role they play in Veterans' lives. First up is Liz Rotenberry. Liz joined me at VA Central Office after the Elizabeth Dole Foundation showed interest in collaborating on a podcast. I didn't know much about Liz before we started the interview, but by the end of it I felt I had just recorded one of the more valuable interviews in the podcast's two year history. Liz, is a military caregiver for her husband, a Marine Veteran of Operation Iraqi Freedom & Operation Enduring Freedom Veteran. As an Elizabeth Dole Fellow Alumna, Liz works to advocate not only for herself and her family, but for all Military and Veteran Caregivers. Liz joined the Elizabeth Dole Foundation as their Caregiver Community Program Coordinator and is now the Foundation’s Fellows Program Coordinator. Prior to becoming a military caregiver, Liz graduated from the University of Delaware with a BAS in Art and Art History. Liz worked in the architectural field as a designer for schools, medical, offices to government and military facilities, including the test sites on Proving Grounds in Arizona. The work Liz experienced with the Proving Grounds in Arizona provided an eye opening experience to what our Military train for in real life theater every day. Liz is honored to have been a part of the training and implementation of the Joint Experimentation Range Complex. It is important for Liz to represent not only the Veteran but especially the Caregiver. Liz and I talk about being a military spouse during her husband's service and how she experienced transition when her husband separated from the military. That, plus plenty of insight on her role as a caregiver.
