Link to article: https://bit.ly/3Hgp4MFThe metaverse is supposed to be the future, so it's got the world buzzing with excitement. Hilariously, though, the prominence of the “futuristic” buzzword has caused old footage of digital worlds to explode on social media, largely driven by the fact that nobody really understands what the hell the metaverse actually is. And because the average person doesn't know what the metaverse is, footage of shabby, lifeless digital universes that look worse than Roblox can pass off as unreleased cutting-edge tech.In late January, for example, a reupload of a 2019 Facebook/Meta trailer went viral on Twitter, showcasing an awkward social virtual reality app called Horizon Worlds. Everyone thought it was a new announcement from Facebook, except it wasn't. Somehow, this metaverse fakeout has happened more than once within the last year! But going back to the viral ad: it tried to paint Horizon as this open and free place where folks could happily do anything and everything, while surrounded by friends all over the world. The happy-go-lucky vibe was out of The Good Place, the tweet noted, except of course, the TV show has a nefarious twist that makes the whole thing even weirder. The footage felt very artificial and ended up making a lot of people online kind of uncomfortable. Everyone depicted in the ad was a floating torso of endless smiles, sexless and toothless. But was the actual experience as off-putting and sterile as the ad made it out to be? I decided to jump in and see for myself. First launched in closed beta last year, Horizon Worlds is a free social app that was made available to everyone last month. I spent a few hours hanging out with other people in its oddly bleak worlds, playing bad games and talking about random things. It was a strange experience, but one that I figure many might share as they take their first steps into the nightmare that is the online digital metaverse.Support the show (https://bit.ly/2XdAlJC)

Welcome to another exciting episode of SFP-NOW here on SciFiPulseRadio. For this episode Ian goes into the realms of Virtual Reality Games and chats with Andreas Juliusson and James Hunt from developer Fast Travel Games. In the interview we talk about the exciting new Puzzle Game 'The Curious Tale of The Stolen Pets' as well as the many projects that the developer has been working on. Speaking about the new game Andreas and James discuss how fans have responded to the game at the various gaming conventions that they have shown the game at. We also touch on the animation style, which put me in mind of a more slick and modern take on the work that 1970's animators Rankin/Bass who were famous for their Christmas animated films as well as The Wind in The Willows. We also discuss the potential of the game to evolve and branch out into other genres while retaining it puzzle elements. When it comes to other games that Fast Travel Games have in the works. We will see Budget Cuts 2, which is a collaboration between Fast Travel and Neat Games, which will be hitting VR Headsets in December. VR fans will be able to play 'The Curious Tale of The Stolen Pets' on 14th of November and we highly recommend it as a game that all ages can enjoy. VR games are probably never going to replace lifting weights, but could they make cardio more fun…and more likely to get done? Dr. Jimmy Bagley is an Assistant Professor of Kinesiology, and Director of the Muscle Physiology Lab, Co-Director of the Exercise Physiology Lab, and Research Director of the Strength and Conditioning Lab at SF State. His department has conducted studies using VR games to test how humans respond to exercise performed in virtual reality and augmented reality environments. We got him on the line to run down exactly how those studies worked, but first we took our own stab at this question. Here’s what we came up with: It seems very likely to work, but will this really get people off the couch? How available is this technology? If this really works well, will globo-gyms someday have VR rooms in place of bike/cardio rooms? Do people workout longer when they’re competing against others in a game environment? How similar is it to the recent experience Mike had at local bike gym All City Riders, or being on a Peloton bike at home. Our ideas start about 4:00. Dr. Bagley joins us about 12:45. We kick off the episode talking about why we don’t talk about politics. You can find Dr. Bagley on Instagram at @drjimmybagley, and on Twitter at @drjimmybagley. Hosted by Mike Farr (@silentmikke) and Jim McDonald (@thejimmcd). Produced by Jim McDonald Production assistance by Connor O’Neal. Theme by Aaron Moore. Branding by Joseph Manzo.
