We consider some of the challenges involved in adapting this distinctively Chinese literary work for a non-Chinese audience, and what might have been lost in doing so. As few mortals can consume media at Tod's pace this week the Regular Joes take a SPOILER FREE pass at two recent film that two of the three have seen. First is Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire the newest entry in the recently resuscitated 1980's franchise. Next is Dune Part II, the somewhat more honestly titled, follow up to Dune (2021). But first, they address the alien in the room. Three Body Problem, the novel by Chinese author, Liu Cixin, was considered by many to be unadaptable for film or TV. Despite this, there are actually two adaptations, a Chinese made version, Three Body (2023), spanning 30 episodes that you can stream on Peacock, and the far more approachable 8 episode version that is at the top of the Netflix charts this week. Created in part by David Benioff and D. B. Weiss, the duo behind Game of Thrones (for better or worse) this epic story may prove every bit as challenging to scale down to the small screen … but, three episodes in, it's pretty good. There's also the usual Random Topics and yet another round of What's in the Box. Thanks for listening!

pWotD Episode 2519: The Three-Body Problem (novel) Welcome to popular Wiki of the Day where we read the summary of a popular Wikipedia page every day. With 271,098 views on Monday, 25 March 2024 our article of the day is The Three-Body Problem (novel). The Three-Body Problem (Chinese: 三体; lit. 'Three-Body') is a story by Chinese science fiction author Liu Cixin, the first novel in the Remembrance of Earth's Past trilogy. The series portrays a fictional past, present and future wherein Earth encounters an alien civilization from a nearby system of three sun-like stars orbiting one another, a representative example of the three-body problem in orbital mechanics. The story was originally serialized in Science Fiction World in 2006 before it was published as a standalone book in 2008. In 2006, it received the Galaxy Award (Yínhé Jiǎng) for Chinese science fiction. In 2012, it was described as one of the genre's most successful novels of the previous two decades. The English translation by Ken Liu was published by Tor Books in 2014. That translation was the first novel by an Asian writer to win a Hugo Award for Best Novel; it was also nominated for the Nebula Award for Best Novel. The book has been adapted into other media. In 2015, a Chinese film adaptation of the same name was in production, but it was never released. A Chinese TV series, Three-Body, released in early 2023 to critical success locally. An English language Netflix series, 3 Body Problem, was released in March 2024.This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 03:00 UTC on Tuesday, 26 March 2024.For the full current version of the article, see The Three-Body Problem (novel) on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm Matthew Neural.

He begins by discussing the three primary body types: ectomorph, mesomorph, and endomorph. For ectomorphs, there's good news as they require more carbohydrates compared to the other body types. Transitioning into the importance of carb backloading and fasting, Nate highlights the benefits of incorporating these techniques into your fitness regimen. He also emphasizes the advantages of taking creatine for a couple of weeks. However, Nate acknowledges the struggles faced by endomorphs and mesomorphs when it comes to weight loss. He sheds light on the impact of higher cortisol levels typically observed in endomorphs and delves deeper into the role of nutrition, training, and cardio tailored to each body type. His Guru initiated him into a rare oral tradition of sacred sounds (Naada yoga) and breath (Svar yoga). In 1967, Sri Shyamji had an insight, in which he discovered the microchakras. According to him they are the pathways through which the light of the chakras reaches our nervous system. Five hours of automatic writing produced a treatise which described 147 stages of human awareness, starting with complete ignorance and ending with enlightenment. The discovery profoundly enriches the classical understanding of the chakras. In addition, he has a unique ability to sense along the spine the openings and blockages. This creates an extraordinarily useful opportunity for people who wish to understand precisely where they are at the present time on the path to enlightenment. As a master of Naada yoga, Sri Shyamji is able to create precise sounds which release blockages within the microchakras. Based upon his assessment of a person's pattern of openings and blockages, he provides them with mantras and InnerTuning© practices to help them progress on their path. 其实,the three-body problem早就存在,几百年前,物理学家就提出了,与其说the three-body problem是对“三体”的翻译,倒不如说“三体”是对the three-body problem的翻译。 3. 三体,到底指什么“三体”的说法comes from Newton's Three Laws of Motion(牛顿三大运动定律)。我们上学学的主要是两者之间的引力关系(mostly focused on the interaction between two bodies),主要就是gravity(地心引力)。 我们可以使用牛顿力学研究the interaction and movement between two plants,也就是the Two-Body Problem (二体问题),但天文动力学研究的体可不止两个。 加入了新的“体”,那么,需要思考研究的问题也相继而来:• What will this third body do with the other two? 第3个“体”会对另外2个产生什么影响?• How will it change their interaction? 它将如何改变它们的相互作用?• What relationship will they have? 这些问题,都是very difficult and hard to explain and understand(很难解释和理解)。The three-body problem is a very complex problem. The series is called “Remembrance of Earth's Past” (地球往事).Remember 是动词,回忆,后缀-ance表示状态,remembrance就是回忆这种行为。

(Sure enough, Ron's boat did capsize his first time out.) Tune in for three odysseys on the rewards and challenges of rowing and learn more about this sport of a lifetime that instills many more thousands of rowers around the world with the goal of participating at the Head of the Charles – the sport's annual celebration of competition, teamwork, and community.  Original music by Ryan Adair Rooney SHOW NOTES Experts: Dr. Kristine Karlson, MD: Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center Section Chief, Family Medicine; Director, Sports Concussion Program; Associate Professor of Community and Family Medicine, Associate Professor of Orthopaedics, Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Geisel School of Medicine, Dartmouth Doctor Chases Her Olympic Dream: Crew: Kris Karlson finished medical school and still kept up with her training as a rower.  Kristine Karlson Olympic Results 1992  Publications: Rib Stress Fractures in Elite Rowers  Rowing: Sport-Specific Concerns for the Team Physician  Dr. Lisa Russell Lowe, DPT PowerHousePhysio  Dr. Russell Lowe's blog @powerhousephy Resources: Head of the Charles Regatta Adaptive Para Rowing U.S. Adaptive Programs - USRowing  Science of Rowing More at www.mybodyodyssey.com Subscribe to the show so you don't miss an episode! The first trailer of new Chinese sci-fi series Three-Body, adapted from Chinese writer Liu Cixin's renownedwork The Three-Body Problem, was released on Tuesday. The show includes some classic lines from the original book stunning special effects, and excellent performances.6月21日,改编自中国作家刘慈欣长篇科幻小说《三体》的同名电视剧发布新预告片。 The series tells the story of a nanomaterials expert who discovers a mysterious countdown clock and finds himself under military investigation. To unravel the mystery, he enters the VR game Three-Body, developed by the secret organization ETO, only to discover the truth behind the deaths of dozens of scientists. Fans of the book gave positive reviews praising the high production value produced by Chinese video platform, Tencent Video, and starring Chinese actors Zhang Luyi, Yu Hewei, Wang Ziwen and Li Xiaoran. The storyThree-Body resonates not only in China but also abroad. In 2020, Netflix had purchased the copyright to Three-Body. "Game of Thrones" creators David Benioff and D.B. Weiss will helm the production, as part of their overall deal with the streaming service. Author Cixin and Ken Liu, who adapted the first and the third novels into English, will be consulting producers on the series. TheThree-Body is regarded as a masterpiece by countless sci-fi fans, not only because of its imaginative and grand cosmology, but also because the book is full of profound reflections on major philosophical propositions such as human nature and science:《三体》被无数科幻迷奉为神作,不仅因为其突破天际的想象力和宏大的宇宙观,还因为书中充满了对人性、科学等重大哲学命题的深刻思考:Your lack of fear is based on your ignorance. Weakness and ignorance are not barriers to survival, but arrogance is. No, emptiness is not nothingness. The hunter has to be careful, because everywhere in the forest are stealthy hunters like him. The truth always picks up dust. Is it possible that the relationship between humanity and evil is similar to the relationship between the ocean and an iceberg floating on its surface? Both the ocean and the iceberg are made of the same material. That the iceberg seems separate is only because it is in a different form. In this episode we review Cixin Liu's Hugo award winning Three Body Problem (the book that made him the first person from Asia to win the award), as well as the sequels. If you haven't read the first book yet, you should - it absolutely deserves all its acclaim, with a huge number of big tech ideas, an incredibly compelling character in Ye Wenjie, and even includes a section set during the Cultural Revolution in China to boot. Unfortunately, the sequels aren't as good - although the second book The Dark Forest does contain the single most disturbing solution to the Fermi Paradox we've ever read! As always, we also recommend and discuss some similar books if you liked Three Body and are looking for more great sci fi to read. This week we recommend the Foundation series by Isaac Asimov, Legends of the Galactic Heroes by Yoshiki Tanaka, Children of Time by Adrian Tchaikovsky, and House of Suns by Alastair ReynoldsIf you'd prefer to watch the video version, you can watch it here.

Based upon his assessment of a person’s pattern of openings and blockages, he provides them with mantras and InnerTuning© practices to help them progress on their path. The topics include the yoga of sound, the yoga of breath, meditative practices, microtone chanting, Three-Body purification retreats, and much more. Sri Shyamji is the founder of the Chakra Institute, headquartered in the United States. He met his spiritual teacher at the age of twelve in the Himalayas. Based upon his assessment of a person’s pattern of openings and blockages, he provides them with mantras and InnerTuning© practices to help them progress on their path. Since 1965, he has presented his work internationally in major growth centers and universities, including Bombay, NYU, Sorbonne, Cambridge, the New School for Social Research, the Esalen Institute, the Asia Society, the New York Open Center, and many others. His book Microchakras: InnerTuning for Psychological Well-being*, coauthored with David Isaacs, PhD. was published in English and French in 2009 and 2013 respectively. Crossing Borders with Nathan Lustig

Most people in Silicon Valley would not intuitively think of building startups in Guadalajara, Mexico. But Mak Gutierrez is part of a team working through Hackers and Founders to support and fund startups in one of the most historic cities in Latin America. In this conversation, Mak and I talk about his background, how Science Fiction has influenced his thinking about the future and the role of tech in the world, and why Guadalajara is one of the best places in Latin America to start a company. The first time playing multiplayer games over dial-up was an eye-opening moment for Mak Gutierrez. It’s always fascinating to hear the turning points that start an entrepreneur or tech startup founder in the direction they go. Mak Gutierrez says that he was always interested in the possibilities that could come from computers and technology, but when he played his first game of “Doom” in a multi-player environment via dial-up, his eyes were opened to what technology might be able to do in the future. We’ve come a very long way from dial-up and Mak says it’s only the beginning. You can hear what he’s doing as part of the Hackers and Founders team to support and encourage the development of companies in Guadalajara, Mexico and how he’s come to believe that smaller tech companies in developing countries will one day be the backbone of their economies. I think Latin Americans have largely been followers rather than leaders. ~ Mak Gutierrez During our conversation about Science Fiction and the role it’s played in Mak’s vision of technology and the future, Mak said that he thinks there hasn’t been much Science Fiction to come out of Latin America because the culture has not been focused on producing leaders, people who see a bigger vision of the future than normal. He’s hoping to change that as he works with Hackers and Founders to not only inspire and encourage innovation and startups in Guadalajara but to cast a wider vision for what could come of Latin American innovation in the global marketplace. You’ll enjoy hearing Mak’s enthusiasm so I hope you will listen. Why value is not created by polishing, it’s created by producing. Mak Gutierrez says one of the most valuable lessons he’s learned in building his own companies and in supporting startups in Guadalajara Mexico is that value is not created for the end-user of any product or service by the business waiting to release until things are perfectly polished. Nobody will be helped until you actually produce something - and whatever it is, it doesn’t have to be perfect. You can hear how Mak suggests startup founders think about the development and release of their products and services, on this episode of Crossing Borders. Few Latin American startups fail because they lack capital. In any country, including those in Latin America, there is nothing more important for a startup than to find a need and meet it. And those needs typically come from the local environment and the needs it contains. In Latin America in particular, those needs tend to be fundamentally beneficial to the culture at large and therefore have a transformative impact. Mak Gutierrez says when he’s helped startups in Guadalajara understand that mindset, they are able to get the funding they need without a problem - because it’s obvious that the company is seeking to meet a need that is in great demand. That’s a winning situation for the startup and for its investors. Mak’s story and insights are so helpful… I hope you take time to listen. Outline of This Episode [1:18] Mak’s work in Guadalajara, building the Hackers and Founders team and program. [6:59] How Mak became interested in tech and began learning.
