Send us a textIn this episode, Mark Waldoch stops by the show to discuss his new group, The Hallelujah Ward's, and new album Everybody Swoons. We also talk about how sometimes having a brat moment got him recognized and more.*****Everybody in Milwaukee knows Mark Waldoch. Either they met him working at the legendary Atomic Records, behind a bar at one of Milwaukee's leading cocktail locales, or most likely singing from the bottom of his heart to the top of his lungs for over the past 25 years. A songwriter and multi-instrumentalist punk crooner with a raw, uniquely powerful voice, he has opened, guitar tech-ed, or performed with everyone from Arcade Fire, Justin Vernon's Volcano Choir, Interpol, Sylvan Esso, Daniel Johnston, Bright Eyes. The list goes on and on and on. Born to Indo-Trinidadian and Puerto Rican/Syrian immigrants in NYC, Waldoch and his brother were pulled by their mother from the big city to the deep Midwest as kids to escape an abusive father. His mother passed shortly after, and Waldoch was adopted by a Racine, Wisconsin family—out of the frying pan and into a John Hughes movie. It's no wonder that he gravitated toward something outside the mainstream, which he found, ironically, at a store called Mainstream Records. Love and infatuation came young, aimed at the likes of the Cure, Siouxsie, the Smiths, R.E.M., the Velvet Underground, and Love and Rockets. The list goes on and on. Inspired by those things and led by a heart that's always open, Waldoch has been creating songs to match his passion and perfectionism with his pen and his pedalboard. He's played solo and in various bands over the years, but nothing quite scratched his lifelong itch until now—The Hallelujah Ward's Everybody Swoons. With drummer Dan Didier (The Promise Ring, Maritime) and bassist Paul Hancock (Testa Rosa), Waldoch finally put the pieces into place. Some of the melodies and seeds of its songs have been simmering for 10 years; some came to life just as this trio did. Waldoch's powerful lyrics range from deeply personal to complete fiction, and the music they exist inside is similarly familiar yet new, with elements of indie-pop, shoegaze, even art-rock, and Brit pop. Everybody Swoons will be out digitally and on limited-edition vinyl, out now via Foreign Leisure Records.******If you would like to contact the show about being a guest, please email us at Dauna@bettertopodcast.comUpcoming guests can be found: https://dmneedom.com/upcoming-guest Follow us on Social MediaInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/author_d.m.needom/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/bettertopodcastwithdmneedomIntro and Outro music compliments of Fast Suzi©2025 Better To...Podcast with D. Send us a Text Message. For this episode, we are talking about the project between Bon Iver's Justin Vernon and the members of Collections of Colonies of Bees, Volcano Choir. The first record was developed asynchronously, and the next record is where they agreed they became a real band.
In bands like Volcano Choir, Pele, Vermont and Collections of Colonies of Bees, guitarist Chris Rosenau has actively sought out a unique ambiguity. Whether through off-kilter tunings, a myriad of loop pedals or long-form improvisations in 130-degree heat, he says he finds his most interesting work comes from trusting others. And that trust has built fruitful creative relationships with enigmatic drummer Jon Mueller, Bon Iver's Justin Vernon and Sylvan Esso's Nick Sanborn, among others. But in a career of disarming listeners through unexpected approaches, Chris admits his most quizzical move might be in the form of a recently-released debut solo album, where he's stripped everything back to one acoustic guitar, for a tender salute to his late mother. The album, titled 'a light that cracks through,' is now available at chrisrosenau.bandcamp.com. Follow @rosno on Instagram.

This week's guest is Mark Waldoch, a Milwaukee mainstay who has been a prominent part of the city's music scene for more than 25 years. Over that quarter-century span, the multi-instrumentalist and owner of Brew City's most booming voice has released outstanding material with The Celebrated Workingman, under his own name and with his current Hallelujah Ward project. Along the way, he's contributed harmonies and horns to a wide variety of songs by other local musicians and he's been relied upon to be a go-to local opener for an incredible list of touring acts coming through town. Oh, and he's also a major part of Milwaukee's holiday music tradition with an array of Christmastime concerts most years. Earlier this week, Waldoch made a long-overdue stop (our bad!) at the My First Band studio, where he talked to host Tyler Maas about all of the above, as well as his upcoming yuletide show at The Cooperage, his amazing and arduous life story, and many memories from his lengthy tenure in the local scene. As Waldoch looked back on his artistic origin, he also treated listeners to anecdotes about touring the U.S. and Europe with Volcano Choir, working at the iconic Atomic Records store, and playing with the likes of Bright Eyes and Interpol before they became worldwide sensations. There's also an incredible and cathartic tale about the time he quit a particularly bad service industry job! My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. You can listen to My First Band on iTunes, Stitcher, Spotify and wherever else you get podcasts. You can also listen to rebroadcasts of previous My First Band episodes on WMSE every Wednesday from noon to 12:30 p.m. CST. This week's guest is Chris Rosenau, whose impressive and inventive guitar work you might recognize from accomplished projects like Pele, Collections of Colonies of Bees and Volcano Choir. Before he was playing to audiences all over the world, collaborating with Justin Vernon and members of The Promise Ring, and releasing influential albums that have stood the test of time, Rosenau was a kid teaching himself Metallica songs in his suburban Milwaukee home. Prior to next weekend's Seventh Stanine Festival at Cactus Club, Rosenau spoke with My First Band host Tyler Maas about new CoCoBees developments, his upcoming release with Nick Sanborn and other modern day happenings. Eventually, the conversation found Rosenau discussing early projects like Orion Black and 21 Guns, playing club concerts with Smashing Pumpkins, starting a band with Jon Mueller (and then another), and some of the most memorable experiences from his decades of playing music. CST. With a musical history rooted in experimental electronics, minimalism and techno, Jim has now found himself deep into Buchla. Drawn to the incredible sound and superior user interface, he started with a Music Easel and now is working with full 100 and 200 Series systems. In addition to his solo work, Jim had performed / recorded with: Sample and Fold,Collections of Colonies of Bees, Volcano Choir, Bon Iver, Dartanjal, Jon Mueller, Marcus Schmickler, Bhob Rainey and James Plotkin among others and had released music on: Zod, Toxic Recordings, Jagjaguwar, Nobody Owns Records, Table of the Elements, Addict Records, Topscore USA and Crouton Records. "After building up the 100 series system I started to apply some of theconventions that I've used working with my 200 Series system. I learned that, because of the 100 Series early designs and limitations, these conventions and ideas quickly turned into something really different... and wonderful." Since releasing their self-titled debut in 2014, Grammy-nominated electro-pop duo Sylvan Esso has hopscotched around the world, gracing countless festivals as well as late-night TV, fueled by vocalist Amelia Meath's enigmatic energy and Nick Sanborn's deliriously inventive production. Previous to his partnership with Meath, Sanborn was a mainstay of the Wisconsin music scene as a member of Decibully, Megafaun and Headlights. Over the last few years, he's also engineered or produced projects for Daughter of Swords, Why? and Meath's trio Mountain Man. Recorded backstage at Nashville's iconic Ryman Auditorium, Nick discusses his anticipation as a then-record store employee for the original release of Radiohead's Kid A, how the lyrics of Gillian Welch's "Everything Is Free" stay consistently relevant with every new update to how we get music, and the new LP Bluebird, his latest instrumental collaboration with Chris Rosenau of Volcano Choir, Pele and Collections of Colonies of Bees. Follow Nick on Twitter and Instagram @madeofoak, and for Sylvan Esso tour dates, music and more visit sylvanesso.com. You can purchase Bluebird on vinyl from www.rosenausanborn.com.
Chris Rosenau (Collections of Colonies Of Bees, Volcano Choir) and Nick Sanborn (Sylvan Esso, Made Of Oak) have traveled in the same creative circles for years now, but it was an off-the-cuff improv set at the inaugural Eaux Claires fest that has led to one of the most powerful releases of 2019, Bluebird. The open window and doors of the small North Carolina studio that Bluebird was recorded in gives the EP a sense of place in the world, but it is the magic weaved between Rosenau’s guitar and Sanborn’s electronic wizardry that pulls the listener wholly out of time and space into a moment of creation that is unlike anything you’re likely to experience this year.PLUS! Alexandra Sauser-Monnig (Mountain Man) makes her debut as Daughter Of Swords on her new LP Dawnbreaker. Taking it’s subject from the eventual end of Sauser-Monnig’s relationship with her partner, Dawnbreaker is brimming with heartbreak, warmth, and quiet moments of wisdom on how we all deal with the end of a relationship, and learn to love not just someone else, but ourselves again. We’re part of the Osiris podcast network. For two decades, Collections of Colonies of Bees have existed in various forms and incarnations, beginning with Chris Rosenau and Jon Mueller (who split time with post-rock band Pele). From there, the line-up grew and evolved. At one time, Nick Sanborn — currently in the spotlight as one-half of Sylvan Esso — counted himself as a member. At another, the group joined forces with Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon to release two albums under the moniker Volcano Choir. (In fact, it was Vernon who proclaimed of his collaborators: “If the world was perfect, they would be as big as U2.”) Never content to paint the soundscape twice, the previously instrumental Bees now come outfitted with vocalist Marielle Allschwang and a new full-length, HAWAII, that finds the Wisconsin-based ensemble harvesting the fertile intersection between experimental and pop to maximum effect. Tune into WMSE for Local/Live on Tuesday, July 17th for a live, on-air set from Milwaukee’s x Madison’s Collections of Colonies of Bees and hear a set full of songs from their brand-new Polyvinyl Records release, HAWAII. Welcome to the April edition of the Aquarium Drunkard podcast, coming in from West of the Rockies. On this program, we explore the late night radio theater of the late Art Bell. The Coast to Coast AM host passed away on Friday, April 13th, and we’ve spent the days since exploring his classic archives. Aquarium Drunkard founder Justin Gage and co-host Jason P. Woodbury sat down to reflect on Bell’s singular voice, dedication to chronicling the unknown, and status as a purveyor of genuine American weirdness. Also on the show, guitarist Nels Cline joins us to discuss his new quartet, the Nels Cline 4, and “Imperfect 10” from the combo’s new Blue Note Records LP, Currents, Constellations. Maybe you know his playing with Wilco, but here he focuses on the notion of “jazz fusion,” which he’s been exploring since the late ‘80s. And we begin the podcast with a discussion with Jaime Fennelly of Mind Over Mirrors. The synthesist and composer just released a masterpiece called Bellowing Sun. It’s cosmic in scope but rooted in the earthy reflections of naturalist writers like Henry Beston, whose 1928 book, The Outermost House: A Year of Life on the Great Beach of Cape Cod, served as a guidepost for the new album. Earlier this month, the album debuted alongside a multi-media installation at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago featuring a light sculpture modeled after an enormous drum. The suggestions — of biorhythms and universal patterns — are in keeping with Mind Over Mirrors’ space-folk. Though Mind Over Mirrors began as a solo project, it’s very much a group effort now, featuring Janet Bean of Freakwater and Eleventh Dream Day, Jon Mueller of Volcano Choir, and Jim Becker of Califone. The band’s latest, Bellowing Sun, arrives in conjunction with a multi-media installation at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago featuring an ambitious light sculpture. One of the marvelous things about Mind Over Mirrors is the way the group’s music feels both spacey and earthy. On the new album, which is at turns ecstatic, spooky, and revelatory, Fennelly and company the band maximize that ability, putting the idea of our planet as a cosmic vehicle into context. “I think about [the cosmos] in relation to my own music as being otherworldly, but I also think of it as being grounded, in the way that the Earth is cosmic,” Fennelly says. “It’s not just about the area beyond us or outside of us, in kind of an exploratory sense as well.” On his new album with the Nels Cline 4, Currents, Constellations, guitarist and composer Nels Cline reigns in the conceptual mood music of his previous Blue Note Records release, Lovers, in favor of tight, spiky interplay with guitarist Julian Lage, bassist Scott Colley, and drummer Tom Rainey. It’s a record fueled by Cline’s energy, incorporating avant-garde, rock, and blues influences. It is, for lack of a better term, jazz fusion music, which explains why Cline’s initial title for “Imperfect 10” was “Jazz Fusion Composition.” “I definitely chose that term to bother people, particularly people who think they’re cooler than ‘jazz fusion,'” Cline says. “Basically, it’s a meaningless term. It’s a combination of basically whatever. It doesn’t have to mean a combination of jazz and rock and classical and funk…it doesn’t mean the same thing from one person to another, and that’s why it’s a fun word to use. It’s basically a meaningless word that bothers people, which I find linguistically fascinating, but it also, stylistically, does kind of define me.” If you’ve ever been the sort of person content to sit around the radio late at night or scan the airwaves on a long drive through the middle of nowhere, there’s a good chance you’ve experienced the strange radio theater of Art Bell’s Coast to Coast AM. Since Bell passed away earlier this month and since his passing, we’ve been tuned into his archives. Here, we reflect on the impact and legacy of Bell’s pioneering program. “Coast to Coast AM felt like this secret handshake between people,” AD’s Justin Gage says. “Not unlike when you find a record or something that means a lot to you, that might be a little esoteric or obscure. Coast to Coast AM definitely kind of felt like that in the late ’90s, early 2000s.” Thanks for listening to the Transmissions podcast. Through four distinctively different albums, The Promise Ring became a staple of post-punk independent rock in the late 90's and early 2000's, with each of their records going on to influence bands worldwide that proudly consider themselves part of today's emo revival. In the 15 years since their break-up (aside from some 2012 reunion dates), singer/guitarist Davey von Bohlen and drummer Dan Didier -- who already had another group together, Vermont, with fellow Milwaukeean and Volcano Choir guitarist Chris Rosenau -- carried on to form Maritime, whose upbeat power-pop never toured as vigorously as The Promise Ring yet has thankfully sustained a longer life-cycle (Maritime's fifth and latest LP is 2015's "Magnetic Bodies/Maps of Bones"). Currently, Dan has been focused on "Don't Break Down: A Film About Jawbreaker," the recently-released, feature-length documentary on the seminal Bay Area punk trio that he co-produced. This week, we cover the fandom around Jawbreaker, how a Monty Python sketch caused Dan to accidentally destroy his first Promise Ring test pressing, a debate about Men At Work records, and how he strikes a balance between avoiding his previous albums but appreciating the nostalgia and memories that they hold. Dan's latest musical project Dramatic Lovers can be found online at dramaticlovers.com, and though Maritime remains on hiatus, you can grab their music at maritime.bandcamp.com. For episode number three, Jack Chuter talks to Jon Mueller: drummer of Pele, Collections Of Colonies Of Bees and Volcano Choir, as well as a solo musician and central instigator of various multidisciplinary creative projects. We talk about the revival of Pele, the process of establishing identity in music and the difficulties in sparking opposition to the rock status quo.
In this episode of The Astral Hustle, I’m joined by masterful drummer and percussionist Jon Mueller (Death Blues, Volcano Choir). We start off by talking about Jon’s work and some of the hard questions one encounters while traveling the creative path. We then move to talking about the act of living, what it could mean to be human, how and why humans resist and deal with death, and how to get out of the patterns of our daily lives in order to stay open. Check out Jon’s art and music at http://rhythmplex.comFollow him on twitter at @jonmueller The intro music is Consonance by Death BluesThe outro music is A Magnetic Center by Jon Mueller - - Thanks to Guayaki Yerba Mate for supporting this episode. cory-allen.com/theastralhustle@_coryallen
To list out Milwaukeean Chris Rosenau’s current and former groups is to go back to the dusty depths of the late 90s (Vermont) and page through to the ever-morphing and still active projects of Collections of Colonies of Bees and Volcano Choir. The current state of Rosenau sees him taking a solo flight, but not straying far from the source of his group musical roots, past or current; guitars create an undulating storyline that is lively and inspiring, joined together by loops and subtle auxiliary embellishments. The recent output of Rosenau’s solo effort is a pair of songs recorded for a 2011 performance at Milwaukee’s Cactus Club that on record, adds that auxiliary instrumentation from his family members. “Pearl” and “F/Lynn” was released on Bandcamp this past summer and was re-performed for the Eaux Claires fesitval in Eau Claire, Wisconsin and a return show at the Cactus Club.
Here's the latest in the Sunday Morning Music series. And as usual it follows a similar path to its predecessors - little bit of quiet vocals, little bit of jazz, little bit of classical, little bit of everything. The first track in the mix is from DeYarmond Edison, which is Justin Vernon's first band from 2005. Vernon is the man behind Bon Iver. He's a fellow Wisconsonite that hit the big time with his For Emma album back in 2007. I discovered the DeYarmond Edison album while doing some Bon Iver research and found that it is an excellent album. Vernon is also a member of Volcano Choir, which has a cut in this mix as well. I have a Justin Vernon mix in the works. It will feature his music along with music from the many artists he has connections with. As much as I like that first track, the highlight of this mix for me is the Kate Bush tune, Snowflake, from her wonderful album, 50 Words for Snow. She sings the song from the point of view of a snowflake, I only used about half of the song in the mix. A couple of others favorite tunes in this mix are Ladder in Place from rf, very bright and happy. I have always loved the Underworld cut, To Heal and used it as part of the title for this installment of the Sunday series. And finally, the Daryll Hall tune at the end from his offbeat collaboration with Robert Fripp is another fav. Other mixes on the horizon include a space rock mix, ambient dub, breathing, time dilation, Americana, sea music and the previously mentioned Justin Vernon Family Tree mix. Volcano Choir is known in no small part for its frontman Justin Vernon, an artist who built legions of fans recording as Bon Iver. But Volcano Choir isn't a Bon Iver side project. "Tiderays" "Island, IS" "Comrade" "The Valleyinaire" "Keel" "Dancepack" "Blue Ni Ni (The Volcano Schores)" "Alaskans" "Acetate" "Byegone"
Darren, Chris, and Jordan discuss Miyazaki's retirement from film, the newest DC Comics editors' "kerfluffle," the new Volcano Choir album Repave, and the series finale of Futurama.
First and foremost, let us apologize for the lack of episodes through August. On the 8th, there was a problem recording the show, on the 15th, only Kev-E-Fly showed up and he only did half of a show (long story), the whole cast took the 22nd off, and now finally that brings us to the 29th of August. Secondly, we are moving to a new podcasting site very soon. 1080AM KYMN Radio (the station we broadcast on) has very graciously offered to have our show on their station's podcast, rather than what we have been doing-- podcasting off of a different service. This will more than likely start with the episode on September 5th, and you can find the station's podcast here: http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=317913830 Thirdly, here's what happened "in this episode" of the show: Dan The Man, Kev-E-Fly and Antsy Adams talk about Bob Dylan lurking in front of homes in New Jersey, getting a free scorpion with your meal at McDonald's, iPhones exploding in France, and Adam and Dan learn to drop their vowels when speaking. We also play brand new music from The Twilight Sad and Volcano Choir, as well as tunes from the Smashing Pumpkins, Bat For Lashes and Friendly Fires.
