Elijah Wood tells Tom Sutcliffe about his new film No Man of God. Elijah Wood plays criminal profiler Bill Hagmaier in a story based on interview transcripts. Hagmaier is sent by the FBI to visit the serial killer Ted Bundy on death row. A fascinating, troubling relationship develops which becomes all the more intense when the date of Bundy's execution is announced. It's just a week away; Bundy agrees to talk, and he has much to confess. As lockdown and the pandemic brought concerts to a standstill, many musicians and comedians turned to online live streaming to perform, entertain and connect with audiences. According to YouTube, 78% of British people watched a live stream over the last 12 months. But now as live events return, and with concerns still over safety, have live streams proven they can coexist alongside in-person concerts as a way to feel part of an experience? Musician Paul Smith from Maximo Park and director and filmmaker Oscar Sansom discuss It's often said that we're living in a podcast ‘boom,' with increased investment from technology giants and big name celebrity signings. But how diverse is the industry itself? The Equality in Audio Pact, launched in 2020, aims to tackle some of the systemic barriers to entry in radio and podcasting for people from under-represented backgrounds. Imriel Morgan is the Founder and CEO of podcast marketing agency Content is Queen- a signatory to the pact- and she's also an award-winning host of the Wanna Be Podcast. She joins us to give her assessment of diversity and inclusion in the audio industry today.

The Wanna Be Podcast is back for a Black History Month special, and I’m going to be sharing the stories of phenomenal black women who are almost certainly making history with their work. This week you’re in for a treat, ever since the Cartoonist series back in January I’ve wanted this week’s guest on the podcast and it was an absolute privilege to get this episode recorded in-person while she was here in London. My darlings you are about to hear from Illustrator, Author and filmmaker Vashti Harrison the brilliant Mind behind Little Leaders Bold Women in Black History which coincidentally is the Black History Month sponsor for this podcast. Vashti creates the cutest and most adorable drawing of little black girls that not only captures their innocence but their magic and strength too. My heart skips a little every time I open the Little Leaders book, and when you pick one up for yourself -or visit her social media you’ll understand why!Today you’ll learn how Vashti maintains her incredible skill, why we should stop telling kids about ‘starving artists’, and how to get your parents to support your creative endeavours.First I had to indulge my curiosity- I simply had to find out about the moment Vashti realised she was good at drawing and listen to what she had to say...Follow Vashti on Twitter and Instagram @VashtiHarrison. Today’s guest is the personification of a multi-potentialite (refer to episodes 11 and 12 with Emilie Wapnick to learn more about multipotentialites). Back to Mercedes- Mercedes is the Brand Partnerships manager at Complex, a host and personality on Heels Off, a DJ- she’s DJ’d for some of the biggest names in the industry including Jaden Smith and Tiwa Savage and she’s an influencer and the Founder of Social Fixt.Mercedes inspiration to start this business was built out of frustration. At the age of 24 she had the most amazing opportunity to work for the biggest tech company in the world. Once she arrived she realised very soon that she would be 1 of 1. Mercedes wanted to see other people like herself in boardrooms and in the ideation meetings. To solve this problem, Mercedes founded Social Fixt which uses social media to list jobs in the creative industry in the Facebook group and on the website. She also hosts events that encourage the BAME community to 'know their worth'.I caught up with Mercedes at Red Bull Amaphiko to get the tea on how she finds the team to do it all and then some. In this episode we talk about focus, time management, diversifying your income, growing a brand, embracing being watched by others and behind the scenes of being an influencer. Let’s dive in! When Mercedes said people can be watching you to big you up, I was immediately  in my feelings! Isn’t that the absolute best way to look at life. This week’s guest esteemed Director Mimi Leder, who’s behind the incredible movie On The Basis Of Sex- The Ruth Bader-Ginsburg biopic which is out in the cinemas as of February 22nd. It’s a fantastic watch that I highly recommend you go and see. RBG is a true feminist icon who infamously moved the needle on gender discrimination and women’s rights in the supreme court.Mimi Leder is a producer and Director. Her credits include On the Basis of sex, The Leftovers Deep Impact and Pay it forward. On the Basis of Sex is Mimi’s first feature film in 18 years following what she describes as ‘movie jail’. We don’t get into that but for some context Pay it Forward wasn’t as successful, and Mimi struggled to get hired as a Director afterwards, she believed this was in part due to her being a woman in a heavily male-dominated industry. In today’s episode, you will learn one of the best ways to deal with feedback and criticism, how you can progress in your career as a woman in male-dominated industries, and why it’s important that we are inclusive when hiring our crews. We jump straight in with why she said yes to ‘On the Basis of Sex’ after 18 years.Thank you so much for listening in. Hello and welcome to the Wanna Be Podcast. I’m your host Imrie! Wanna Be is the podcast that takes you from where you are right now to Where you Wanna Be in 30mins or less. Thank you for staying subscribed and listening in. Last season and the Black History Month special were an absolute dream to put together for you. Thank you for the new reviews as well! You can subscribe for free and catch a brand new 30 minute episode every Wednesday. This season will be a little different. The key changes are that there will be only 1 episode per week but it’ll still be short, sweet and double the amount of motivational goodness you’ve come to know and expect. This week’s guest should be very familiar to you it’s London’s Mayor Sadiq Khan! I had the pleasure of sitting down with the Mayor during the Behind Every Great City campaign.Sadiq Khan is a British politician serving as the Mayor of London since 2016. He served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tooting from 2005 to 2016. He got his law degree from the University of North London. Before entering politics he was a solicitor specialising in human rights. Before becoming Mayor he held a number of positions including Minister of State for Communities in 2008, Minister of State for Transport, Shadow Secretary of State for Justice, Shadow Lord Chancellor and Shadow Minister for London. He was elected Mayor of London at the 2016 mayoral election, winning by the largest number of votes in one election of any politician in British history. In today’s episode the Mayor will show you how to look at the glass as half full, he shares how he handles the responsibility and subsequent blame when tragedy strikes. He reveals whether women and other BAME individuals should run for London Mayor and finally is it ever worth poshing up your voice to get ahead in politics or for any job really. We jump in with the Mayor sharing where he thought he’d end up in life if he wasn’t the Mayor. It’s not an easy job at all to be the Mayor but I personally feel very inspired by how optimistic and positive Sadiq was about the job and his overall commitment to helping others fulfil their potential. I’m not sure I could put up with 1% of what he does and still remain positive about people so I find him to be quite refreshing. To follow the Mayor you can do so @SadiqKhan and be sure to tell him that @wannabepodcast sent you :)Thank you so much for listening in. It’s Episode 96! Sofie Hagen (Secret Dinosaur Cult and Made of Human) and Imriel Morgan (Wanna Be & Shout Out Network) return for Sofie’s choice 22 July. 22 July is a 2018 film from Paul Greengrass, it is a fictional dramatisation of the real life events from 2011 when Anders Behring Breivik committed horrific violence on the island of Utøya and Oslo. The film could be viewed as three parts. The first part shows the calculated destruction and massacre that Breivik inflicts upon defenceless teens as they try and escape. The second part is standard drama, giving a voice to the victims as they try to recover and Breivik in court. The final part is a rushed attempt at offering hope and some kind of reconciliation of guilt for those who survived. Scores [supsystic-tables id='99']The end result is over two and half hours of messy filmmaking, while its intentions are to tell the victims stories and maybe to show the strength of family but it is still unbearably bleak. Overall 22 July scores 2.53 - let down by recommendability and that it’s over two and half hours. What do you guys think? Have you seen 22 July? What did you think? It’s Episode 86! Imriel Morgan (Wanna Be Podcast and Shout Out Network) and Sofie Hagen (Made of Human and Secret Dinosaur Cult) join us for Imriel’s choice, the 2018 Netflix film To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before. Based on the novel of the same name by Jenny Han, directed by Susan Johnson and starring Lana Condor and Noah Centineo. While there is nothing particular new or surprising about the plot of To All The Boys, what is surprising and refreshing is the characters and loveliness flowing through the whole film. The lead, Lara, is played by Vietnamese born actress Lana Condor, which considering most female leads in rom coms are white Americans is a pretty big deal. What makes it even more of a bid deal is they don’t draw attention to it or make a plot point, boom! Zipping along at 99 minutes the film is a breeze and the chemistry between the two leads is always believable. Scores [supsystic-tables id='89']There was a lot of love for To All The Boys from everyone, a LOT of love, nearly so much love that it toppled newly crowned Flixwatcher champion When Harry Met Sally off the top. Nearly but not quite, but scoring a very respectable 4.78. They’ve just announced a sequel so watch this now! What do you guys think? Have you seen To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before? The Wanna Be Podcast is back for a Black History Month special and I’m going to be sharing the stories of phenomenal black women who are almost certainly making history with their work.Omg I’m screaming inside about this week’s guest! My darlings I got to sit down with Amandla Stenberg who played Rue in the Hunger Games, she made the incredible viral video on Cultural Appropriation, and is also the lead actress in When Hands Touch- Directed by former guest Amma Asante too name a few and she’s only 20! I got to enjoy her light, her honesty and all of her charming wisdom. As you may have seen already Amandla is the lead in the new The Hate U Give movie based on the Angie Thomas novel by the same name which is out now- I cannot recommend it enough.Amandla and I got chatting about lots of things that might interest you. We talked about activism, self-care, and how she protected herself from the backlash she faced for not being ‘black’ enough to play Starr in The Hate U Give. After reading a bunch of articles about how much Amandla’s teenage life mirrored Starr’s I was curious to know how she played a character like Starr when they had so many overlapping experiences.Make sure you head out to the cinema to see The Hate U Give it is honestly phenomenal and it left me in my feelings for days afterwards. Amandla does a great job and I couldn’t be more pleased to have had the opportunity to sit down with her and share that experience with you. Did you know Hasidic Jews fear the internet? If the answer is no and you’re curious why you might find this challenging documentary of interest. A sort of expose and sort of suspense thriller this film looks at the treatment of three different people who try to leave their communities. All three stories are sad, depressing and scary, there really isn’t much positivity to take from their experiences. Scores [supsystic-tables id='56'] While the stories of the individuals here are all important and should be be heard One of Us lacks in resolution or any kind of positivism the film lacks balance or perspective - scoring low on repeat viewing (as do most documentaries) overall we score it at 3.32 - worth an investigation.
