This journey led to coaching parents and physicians, emphasizing the importance of personal and professional growth through diverse experiences. Redefine Your Role: In my transition from active duty to civilian practice, I focused on building a specialty clinic around long-term relationships and open emotional discussions with families. By recognizing my limitations and outsourcing certain tasks, I've started creating a fulfilling practice that aligns with my passions. Prioritize Self-Care: Managing exhaustion and burnout taught me the necessity of addressing my own needs, such as adequate sleep and downtime. I advocate for balancing clinical practice with personal well-being to sustain a rewarding career in medicine. We also discuss the dilemma physicians face in trying to move away from a weight-centered approach when so many families come to the doctor's office wanting to discuss their child's weight. We don't claim to have all of the answers, but Dr. Schofer is clear that our current focus on weight is not helpful for our children. September is National Childhood Obesity month, and a perfect time to have this week's guest, Dr. Wendy Sofer. She's a pediatrician and a certified health and wellbeing coach. And she's the founder of Family and Focus, a program she created for parents who are worried about weight at home, their weight, and their kid's weight as well. She helps them shift the focus of the scale to create healthier relationships with the food body, and with the whole family. Again, this work could not be more important now as childhood obesity rates have dramatically risen in the last several years. I discussed in a prior podcast about the change in weight in our kids during the pandemic, the statistics show that 19% of our children ages two through 19 were considered to have excess weight in August of 2019. And that went up toy 22.4% one year later. And of course, this is associated with metabolic consequences like type two diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol in our children, as well as psychosocial complications like depression. So tune into my conversation now with Dr. Wendy for a shift in the narrative around her children's weight, and a focus on lifelong health and well-being that will serve you and your family. What you will learn from this episode:Tips to help your kids develop a healthy relationship with foodWhy it is important for your kid to have a healthy relationship with food that doesn't feel restrictive? What does parental influence have to do with your kid's eating behaviorHow the emergence of parent-child conflicts about food over time and the influence of parents' communication strategies and feeding practices “Kids push back [healthy eating habits] and sneak things, into their rooms because they're afraid of losing it. "It's time to flip the script on evaluations. How can we shine a light upon the strengths of the wonderful peers we are blessed to work with? How can we amplify their greatness, help them work in their own zone of genius? How can we recognize that we all have different, complementary strengths that overlap so that there are no weaknesses; there are just different approaches or different strengths to mobilize? When we are all working in our own zones of genius, that's where we create a culture of well-being." Wendy Schofer is a pediatrician. "I propose that we look at what each choice in food does for us: How does it make my body feel? How am I able to sleep and move and focus when I eat this food? How am I giving my body what it needs right now and what will keep it strong over time? And, how is this food the perfect one that my body needs right now? Eating the food that fuels aspirations and performance is much better to produce positive change than fueling shame, guilt, and misery. As we practice doing better, we will find ways to help ourselves and our communities create the habit of positive change. Because you are not defined by what you eat." TL;DR: Exercise is not always helpful, in fact, it can be harmful to your health, and not in some crazy I-can't-believe-I-ran-that-far or lifted-that-car-over-my-head kind of way. And when you're ready to start applying this in your own home, check out www.wendyschofermd.com for more information about my coaching programs, as well as the blog at www.wendyschofermd.com/blog. ------ Welcome to Family in Focus with Wendy Schofer, MD. I'm the pediatrician-coach who specializes in helping you parent without all the food and body drama so raising a healthy family is actually easy & fun. Did you know that it's possible for exercise to NOT be healthy for you. This does not mean I'm never going to move again. Let's check it out: What makes something healthy for you? My answer: When they are supporting you. When doing them becomes an investment in you. It's building you up, and helping you. We can apply this to education, new experiences, food, and yes, movement. First, I like to call it movement, not exercise. Exercise has a connotation that there is an end-goal – sweat, health outcomes, or winning. Movement is using our bodies - and ultimately our bodies don't care if we are in competition (with ourselves or others). Our bodies need movement - to use it or lose it (think about flexibility, conditioning, aerobic capacity – if you've ever been out of commission for a week with the flu, pneumonia, or an injury, you know the difference when you get moving again - your body needs time to recondition to where it was before). So how is exercise NOT healthy or helpful for you? #1: When you're using it to punish yourself "I have to work out because I ate…cookies/pasta/the whole thing." Meh. No you don't. Punishment does not work. #2: When it's mandatory “My mom said I have to exercise for an hour each day.” “I have to ride my bike for an hour each day.” Seriously? Who said? Do you enjoy things when they are mandatory? Having come from a career in the Navy, I will let you in on a little secret: the twice-annual feats of strength (aka, the physical readiness test) is miserable. It's an exercise in proving yourself to someone else. And it's mandatory. Ick. It's the reason why I no longer like running - because I had to run for my PRT and it was the only reason I was doing it. I didn't like it. When I was able to move for me… for enjoyment, for strength, for my mental health, that's when movement became healthy & helpful for me. #3: When there's shame or guilt. “I HAVE to exercise because otherwise I'm gonna take heat from my mom, my dad, my coach.” “I HAVE to or else I'm going to gain weight.” It sounds like the truth, but in fact, it's a story you're telling yourself that is NOT helpful for you to enjoy movement. These are all things we tell ourselves to push ourselves into exercise, and ultimately we do not stick with things that we have to push ourselves into. The willpower runs out, and we wind up HATING the activity. So stop. Stop exercising for beating yourself up, for shame, or because you have to. Movement is helpful for your body - but not because I tell you so. How do you feel when you move your body? How can you move your body and enjoy it? How do you want your body to feel? Strong? Free? Lighter? Movement can actually help with all of those, not because you're changing weight, but because you're connecting with your body and ENJOYING it. ------ Disclaimer: While Wendy Schofer, MD discusses health and wellness, this is not medical advice and she is not your doctor. "I see lamenting the Great Resignation. I celebrate it. It's not so much about what people are leaving – but where are they going? What have they empowered themselves to become? The thought, 'There has to be something more,' has been pondered and fleshed out. We are stretching our wings, becoming educators, influencers, and entrepreneurs; creating movements and businesses; becoming the parents we always wanted to be. And I dare say that the writing is on the wall for organized medicine. We can lament that physicians are resigning and feverishly design retention programs. Or we can see that physicians do not want to be retained in this system. We are big thinkers, we are idealists, we are creative, and we are creating the future of medicine right now." Wendy Schofer is a pediatrician. She shares her story and discusses her KevinMD article, "Why we should celebrate the Great Resignation." Did you enjoy today's episode? Welcome to Family in Focus with Wendy Schofer, MD, Episode #33. I help you parent without all the food and body drama. So let's get drama-busting. One of the biggest dramas that I had was "knowing" what was healthy and then seeing my family make other choices. And then fearing the health outcomes of their "unhealthy" choices. No wonder I felt miserable. In today's episode, I unpack what we know about health and bodies, and challenge you to start considering what we don't really know. I dive into my definition of health - and how it's powering me and my family every single day (hint: check out the video game health bar - see, my kid did teach me something from video games!). EPISODE 115 - Dr. Wendy Schofer is a certified life & health coach and pediatrician who specializes in helping parents struggling with their kids' weight & obesity. Unlike medical weight loss programs, she doesn't focus on what's wrong with the child or try to fix their weight with diets, exercise, pills, and surgery. Instead, she empowers the parent to focus on what matters most to lead the whole family to lifelong healthy habits. In the episode, Wendy shares why it's important to place less emphasis on an individual child's weight and more emphasis on creating a healthy whole family, the role of a parent when it comes to preparing and serving food, how parents can model healthy eating behaviors for their children...and more! This week on the podcast I am joined by Dr. Wendy Schofer. Dr. Schofer is a certified life & health coach and pediatrician, who specializes in helping parents struggling with their kids' weight & obesity. Are you a parent who has ever worried about your child's weight? Do you worry that your own struggles with weight have an impact on your children? Or, are you a Physician looking for a more effective way to support your patients with all of the issues that surround their weight? Listen to the full episode to learn more about how you can empower yourself, your children or your patients to move forward.
Something the healthcare industry as a whole needs is growth. We need to evolve in the way we speak to our patients, how we approach diagnostics, and the way we label conditions. Wendy Schofer is a pediatrician who specializes in working with overweight children and she is at the forefront of that need. Our kids are not broken. But when we label them as overweight and obese, we are sending them the message that they are. So many children these days are hyper focused and aware of their weight and are considering dieting. They are surrounded with the message that weight is highly important and that those who weigh less are better than those who weigh more. Our children see and hear everything that we do and say. We all need to grow in the way that we approach health. Listen as we chat about raising children, better ways to approach important health conversations, and why we need to stop putting labels on everything. Our kids need to go back to being kids. This is one step in making that happen. “From the best of intentions that we as physicians are identifying in what's going on, we are actually labeling that child as being broken.” Dr. Wendy Schofer In this episode: [02:19] Welcome to the show, Dr. Wendy Schofer! [02:36] She shares her background and what she is doing now. [04:03] She talks about her children and her 18 year plan for each of them. [06:38] Listen as Dr. Schofer discusses why she picked the word growth. [08:33] She speaks about the unconscious bias parents are surrounded by from people around them about their child's weight. [11:27] What parents say at home about calories and weight affect the children who hear them. [14:40] Dr. Schofer says the whole you have to name it to tame it approach doesn't work. [17:54] “I have come to realize that larger bodies can be healthy too.” [21:14] Learn where to hang out with Dr. Wendy Schofer. [23:29] Thank you for being on the show! Welcome to Family in Focus with Wendy Schofer, MD, Episode #19. Did you realize you have a say in the questions that you ask yourself? We have trained our brains to keep looking for something else, the next notification, all the things that need to be on the to-do list, all the things that require our time and attention and energy. It's hard to see the forest through the trees. Especially when it's your family -- seeing them through all the things to do, all the things vying for your attention. Today I touch on starting to ask your brain - not what else needs to be done (and always adding to the list), but choosing - deciding - where you want to focus. I'd love to hear from you. wendy@wendyschofermd.com Join Family in Focus at www.wendyschofermd.com

Today I touch on starting to ask your brain - not what else needs to be done (and always adding to the list), but choosing - deciding - where you want to focus. I'd love to hear from you. wendy@wendyschofermd.com Join Family in Focus at www.wendyschofermd.com
Welcome to Family in Focus with Wendy Schofer, MD. Episode #18 A gymnastics-tricks session with my niece this weekend left her amazed: her mom and I jumped right in. She hadn't seen adults jump in to play like that at the gym and it begged the question: why? Why aren't parents playing? In today's episode, we dive into this further - and I ask of you: how can you let go and allow your brain and body to play? Please like, follow, and subscribe to Family in Focus on your favorite podcast service and share so that more parents can bring healthy habits to their family. Much love - Wendy

Welcome to Family in Focus with Dr Wendy Schofer. Episode #17: The final step in my Go S.L.O.W. process for creating healthy family habits: Water. So powerful, essential (as per my father-in-law... and biology!) and yet so easily overlooked. Today I talk about the things that get in the way of adopting water into our regular habits - and why it is deserving of more attention.

Welcome to Family in Focus with Wendy Schofer, MD. Today we continue on the Go S.L.O.W. framework: Observe your body. Get all busy asking it two really important questions: Am I hungry? Have I had enough? We go through a whole bunch o' stuff that gets in the way of asking the questions and listening to the answers. I'd love to hear what you're learning for yourself. What are the messages you are hearing from your body about hunger and enough-ness? And how are you modeling it for your kids? Drop me a line at wendy@wendyschofermd.com.

Several years ago, I had a student, “Jake” with ADHD and anger/aggression problems. We tried various things to help him and all did some good, but the thing I most wanted to change for him, I had zero control over. Jake would come to school every day with snacks that contained at or near zero nutrition. But plenty of sugar and calories. One day it was an entire sleeve of Thin Mint Girl Scout Cookies. Another day it was a massive bag of “Takis”. Other days he would actually only have money to buy a snack from the cafeteria, but he would spend $5 on $0.25 cookies. Yes, they actually let him buy 20 cookies! And he ate them all at snack time. In case you were wondering, he was not even slightly overweight. He played hard as soon as he was done with his snack and seemed to have a naturally thin body type. However, I always wondered if some of his behavioral challenges would be alleviated if he had a healthier diet. In this week's podcast episode, you'll hear from Dr. Wendy Schofer- a pediatrician who specializes in coaching families on improving the diets of their families. She'll share something that surprised me a bit, and yet is completely in line with this entire series. I would love to hear what diet changes you are considering or what is already working for your family! Read the Transcript and Get on the list to be in the know at www.YourParentHelp.com/podcast_0128

WISH Well Podcast: Women's Integrative Summit on Health & Wellness
This week's episode features pediatrician and life coach Dr. Wendy Schofer. We discuss her journey into becoming a life coach after seeing her patients in her practice struggle with obesity. "Should" is a word I've tried hard to eliminate from my vocabulary and so this episode really was close to home for me. I hope you all enjoy listening to this episode! Find out more about Dr. Schofer at www.wendyschofermd.com Dr Wendy Schofer is a pediatrician, lifestyle physician and family life and weight coach. Her 16+ years in clinical practice has taken her from military medical practice around the world, to primary care and then to nonprofit community work. She brings experience having difficulty conversations, supporting parents through emotional and behavioral challenges, transitioning (repeatedly!) in the military, using lifestyle as medicine, and a big dose of fun to coaching. Coaching has brought a new level of personal satisfaction and enjoyment to her clinical practice, and is the elusive missing link for helping families enjoy health at home. She helps parents "shed the shoulds" to address the fears around nutrition and overweight, and become the confident role model for family health.
